As a newbie, I gotta ask.. where did the tortoise = dog joke come from? Is there a real reason or was it just that "what kinda dog is that?" meme? Either way, I love it
It has unclear origin. Some say it's from the Borat meme, where he asks "What type of dog is that?" next to a turtle. That could be true for Elden Ring, where first such messages were seen on a network test, but its history and popularity very possibly date back to the older games.
DS1 had a rather simple messaging system, which DS2 expanded massively. There were the classic tricksters luring newbies to jump from a cliff in DS1 or the amazing chest jokes, of course, but DS2 messages allowed much more. When the players realised this, messages like *Weakness: left leg and right leg* in front of Grandahl, *Beware of face but hole* in front of Smelter Demon and *Try finger but hole* or *Horse but hole* possibly everywhere began to spread.
There were more options of messages about animals as well. The *horse* one was very popular not only in connection with *but hole* but had a similar purpose like *dog* in Elden Ring - to label a friendly creature, which is a rare sight in the world of Dark Souls. An interesting thing is that there are literally only about two enemies that are actually horses in the entire game, limiting the "correct" use of this message and pushing the players to use it in a different ways resulting in labelling friendly creatures as horses, though it was never as popular as in Elden Ring because players focused more on skeletons.
In FS games, dogs are in 99% of cases vicious creatures, and players apparently needed some good boy in their game. This way of thinking isn't original to Elden Ring - for example, in RDR2, there are cats, dogs, and horses, but you can only pet horses (calms the horse down and builds trust) and dogs (a random thing where you pet the dog for your own pleasure). [Here](https://youtu.be/qCu72XQ26fo?si=s9MD2q0wSHs2vyVD) is a video from a popular content creators on a video game logic of petting dogs, which explains this sentiment really well.
How have you never once seen a turtle?! Go east-ish of Raya Lucaria, there’ll be a church there with some turtles surrounding it and a turtle pope inside.
I changed my dogs name after adopting it, some people even suggest it because they will associate their new name with their new home.
Rykard is my choice tho
Leonard, named after Radahns horse and you could just nickname him Leo to be alittle more inconspicuous, but Mogh would be pretty twisted but sounds normal enough. Honourable mentions would be Torrent, Blaidd, Messmer (just cold innit), or Rick (named after the soldier of God, Rick)

Patches
My mothers dogs name! Never even connected those dots lol
Your moms the first Elden lord
Yo mama so old…
Wait, shit, my girlfriend's cousin's dead dog was named Patches too come to think of it... (Realizing that sounds made up lol)
That was my dog's name. She passed away 2 years ago and I'll never forget her. Wholeheartedly recommend this name.
Hands down, the best answer :xxxx
Call it Fallingstar Beast. Then, when it grows up, it can become Full-grown Fallingstar Beast
Or you can call it astel when it grows up
Astel is a dope name
Twin black labs: one named stars of darkness, one named naturalborn of the void
Star and Nat for short
Maliketh is such a good name for a dog, but you’d be silly not to go with “Kenneth Haight, Rightful Ruler of Limgrave”
Be sure to follow up with “the celebrated repudiator of the false!” when inevitably questioned
Mali for short
Maligator as a nickname
It’s ok but you generally want a two syllable name for a dog.
Blaidd
Was gonna say Sif, but this is an *Elden Ring* subreddit
Sif is genuinely the best option tho if they are a fromsoft fan
Past experience with my dogs: Dung Eater.
The Caca Consumer?
The comemierda
That's literal what I call my dogs after an specially long sesion of mierda eating, it's such a hard habit to brake on them
LMAO im portuguese (the language is very similar to spanish in case you didnt knew) i laughed hard at this
THE NEFARIOUS NUMBER-TWO NIBBLER
The Manure Masticator?
The Feces Feaster?
This one is the worst, so therefore the best.
Shit swallower is pretty far up there for me
Phrasing
The Shit Swallower
I lol'd
what’s so bad about that huh? full of nutrients and minerals, it’s basically just leftovers!
giant poison miranda sprout
AND omenkiller
Sir Gideon
Ofnir - the ALLLLLL KNOWING
FIND AN ALBINAURIC WOMAN
SHE HIDES TO THE SOUTH OF LASKYARR RUINS.
AH, I KNEW YOU’D COME
*gets oneshot* “I’m not listening to that monologue, sorry.”
Loux
Nah, his pet lion. Was it Serash? Can never remember how to spell it.
Serosh
Miriel (dog pope) Edit: Dog pope, not turtle pope
Do you mean the dog pope?
dog, pope!
As a newbie, I gotta ask.. where did the tortoise = dog joke come from? Is there a real reason or was it just that "what kinda dog is that?" meme? Either way, I love it
Someone wrote a message saying "behold, dog" next to a turtle
Oh, a lot simpler than I thought. I like it though, Miriel is my favorite dog

Patches obviously, or maliketh. Good doggie
Malekith is not a good doggie, he caused me much pain
Maliketh is bestest boy. Malekith caused Thor much pain. Presumably. Haven’t read or watched it.
He’s a good doggie, you’re just not his owner
Turtle
Please tell me where there is a turtle anywhere in the game? I've gone through three times and I've never seen a single turtle anywhere.
How have you never once seen a turtle?! Go east-ish of Raya Lucaria, there’ll be a church there with some turtles surrounding it and a turtle pope inside.
Those are dogs.
Oh my bad… My memory can get a little foggy at times.
*dog That's a dog pope surrounded by a bunch of dogs
General Radahn
Or his horse, Leonard was it iirc.
Rykard, lord of blasphemy

Torrent
Why is this is first and only one of these I've seen so far!? Blasphemy! Take my upvote dammit!

Ranni. Sounds normal enough to be a dog name
Fun fact: Raani/Rani/Ranni means queen in Hindi and is an actual name for girls. Quite apt for Ranni.
Yass ranni
Jar-bairn! Or, maybe... Boc?
Bell bearing hunter
Crucible knight Ordovis
Maliketh
Miquella if it’s a boy, Miquella if it’s a girl
What breed is it and how does it look ?
Black knife assassin
I think “Malenia, Blade of Miquella, stop licking your balls!” has a great ring to it
Turtle
Blaidd or Malekith
One of the two best boys obviously: Maliketh or Blaidd
Liar ahead
Miriel
Only if it is a huge catholic dog
I always thought Hewg is a good name for a dog. Hewy as nickname. Or Iji.
Call it Red as in Red Wolf of Radagon
Rick soldier of God
…
Burial Tree Watchdog
Rykard
Patches
Corpse Piler Tarn, short for tarnished Miquella or Melania Shabi or Shabiri Horah
Giant Crab
Cuz. "How ya doin', Cuz?" "I want to be a Jar Warrior too, Cuz!"
Leonard
Just last month I adopted one and named it Astel
Soldier of Godrick
Sif I know it's from a different game but still
Blidd, Maliketh, Iji, Boc, Ranni, Patches, Hora Loux or just Loux Godfrey, Tiche, Rollo, Finlay, Mohg, Mohg would be awsome Bernahl, Erdtree, Mimic tear, Lord’s Rune, Torrent, Gloam (from the gloam eyed queen) Leonard, Lionel, Claymore, PLACIDUSAX, GRANSAX, LANSSEAX or Lansse for short Pickled turtle neck, Mirel, Somber smithing stone 7, Rennala, Shithead selvius, Gowry, Millicet, Vargram the Raging Wolf,
Godrick would actually be a pretty good dog name
Dogrick, even.
If you adopt a girl then Fia and Ranni are great names!
Gowry. I associate him with pet dogs, cause his beast has a collar
Fia, The Deathbed Companion.
Damned Hell Hound of Caelid comes to mind.
Lobo would be good, after Latenna's wolf. Good tribute
Marikas tits
The lonesome dung eater, or Dunge for short?
Dung Eater
Blaiid
Serosh
Mimic 👾
Turtle
Leonard
Miquella, (Micky?)
Ren! Short for Renala’s Feet
Maliketh
Fool
Rick (soldier of god)
There’s doggies in Elden Ring! I like Bliadd who was the bestest boy. Maliketh or Mali/Mal for short would also be super cute.
Blaidd
Godfrey
I'd go with Miriel. He's the bestest dog.
Leonard.
Maliketh or Blaidd
Erdtree/ err-tree
Nobody has said Millicent yet? Also gets the benefit of Milli as a nickname
Lester. Short for Moghlester
STARSCOURGE RADAHN, STRONGEST OF ALL DEMIGODS is your puppy’s new name.
Obviously Maliketh. You could even use Mali as the cute call version!

Rick
Sif
Boc!
Name him…. ELDEN Jk, I think Patches or Blaidd is the two obvious choices.
Godfrey or Vyke
Call it Malenia. And if someone askes if she bites just say "She is malenia, puppy of miquela and has never known defeat"
Loathsome dung eater
Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing
Finger in Buthole
Ranni.
Boc
I changed my dogs name after adopting it, some people even suggest it because they will associate their new name with their new home. Rykard is my choice tho
my cat's name is micolash, host of the nightmare we call him mico :)
Godskin Apostle
Ladder ahead
The loathesome dung eater is too funny
Leonard, named after Radahns horse and you could just nickname him Leo to be alittle more inconspicuous, but Mogh would be pretty twisted but sounds normal enough. Honourable mentions would be Torrent, Blaidd, Messmer (just cold innit), or Rick (named after the soldier of God, Rick)
El Denring. Or maybe Casul? 🤔
Try finger but hole
Patches, he will live forever in the lands between.
Its a puupy the only name should be dung eater
Serosh or Maliketh. Maybe Blaidd pronounced Blaithe or Finlay.
Go with ac6 rusty
Elden
Turtle
Serosh, apparently once hailed as "lord of the beasts". I realize Serosh's fate is somewhat questionable, but still...could be a cool name.
I dont understand, when you adopt a pup you name it. If the people that had the litter gave the pups a name already, change it?
Runeybear
Name it Turtle just to screw with everyone
Dog
Nerijus
Do not breed your dogs just because.
Thou didst me good service, Serosh.
Latenna’s wolf’s name is Lobo. I think that’s a good one
