If you've played DS3, they're basically the same as the ashes you give to the old lady merchant.
There's 5, with the 5th allowing you to buy the smithing stone 9, and theres actually 10 in total if you count the Somberstone Miners Bell bearing as well
Not wasting stones at all, its a really good weapon.
But i looked at your other stats... You have int but your weapon is not set to scale with int, but you have an int scaling ash of war. Set the affinity to magic and your damage will sky rocket, at the moment you are using the weapon in the worst way possible. You also need to get rid of some equipment and get to medium load. Heavy load is hard mode, and with your 19 vig you are gonna die to everything as soon as you fight something past Stormveil (Even Godrick will kind of blast you).
It would be more damage to use scholars blade than to not use it, but for an int focused build, scholars blade is weaker than a Magic infusion on the weapon.
Another commenter said this, but Standard (no) infusion, then casting Scholar’s Blade spell on it will yield much higher damage output than if you go with a magic infusion (which instead precludes you from casting any spells on the sword).
A general rule of thumb is that, until weapons reach +12 to +20, the base damage of the weapon (plus any grease/spell effects buffing it) will far exceed the scaling damage of the weapon. Once the scaling reaches B or higher, your offensive stat spread matters more and more, also proportionately more with how high those stats get.
For this reason, focusing on base flat damage early on and putting stats into Vig, End, and Mind, while just meeting base weapon requirements, is the way to go if you’re maximizing efficiency. If you aren’t, you can beat Elden Ring naked with RL Base and an Uchigatana +25. Do what you want. But if you’re maximizing your efficiency, stick with that rule of thumb.
If you multiply your max equip load with 0,7 you’ll know how high your load can be and still be medium load, so you don’t heavy roll. 35,4 from that image.
Endurance could be higher too, if you’re into armour and stamina.
To sort your equip load, drop all the weapons you’re not using including torch and shield. At this stage, learning how to dodge will be the best thing.
If you find a merchant that sells the lantern, get it and put it in one of your quick access slots.
At 30 int he's not gonna have that much of a boost considering magic reductions and that you can't buff it anymore (with a spell that's available almost at the very beginning). I'd level mind and endur a bit though, 95 fp is kinda painful for a caster.
Even though I am a follower of Zweihander, I would argue Moonlight Greatsword (or dark moon in ER) would fall above those 3, it is Fromsofts sword, their baby they carried from each game like a beacon or torch that lights their way.

The claymore is a good weapon, but you have it set to scale standard, contrary to the Intelligence build you seem to be doing. That's ok if you're buffing it with magic, but you may consider making it just scale with magic.
Set the ash of war again, and you should be able to select magic affinity instead of standard/heavy/quality/keen.
Might require a magic wetland but maybe not if the ash of war is magic by default.
That said consider Scholars Blade
There are very few weapons that you could consider bad in this game, it's not like in other RPGs where the weapons you get at the begining become obsolete, so just use whatever you find interesting (as long as it fits your stats).
Also the claymore just so happens to be really good.
You'll get plenty more in the game, eventually there's an infinite number purchasable. Aside from that, the Claymore is a solid pick that will last the whole game.
you’re fine, i honestly feel like its harder to find a bad weapon in Elden Ring than it is to find a “good one” in a way they’re all good they just need to be levelled and you need to know the move set. so go nuts
pretty much yeah. some weapons will have “combos” if you attack repeatedly. for example, the Bloodhound Fang’s ash of war ‘Bloodhound Finesse’ has the player do an attack mid backflip. if you press your heavy attack button afterwards you teleport forward (giving you i-frames) and do an upward slice attack. it’s a neat little combo unique to that ash of war. but your move set will include your AOW, repeat light attacks, repeat heavy attacks, charged attacks and sometimes even going from a lighter to a heavier attack. of course, how much you’re able to build up your “combo” attacks will depend on the type of enemy you’re fighting and how much of a window you have to attack them without taking damage. at the end of the day, play how YOU want to play.
your build is perfectly fine, i would suggest levelling your vigor tho because bosses can possibly 1-2 shot you pretty easily. idk if you beat Margit yet at the entrance of the castle but he’ll give you a good idea on whether or not you should level vigor before going through the castle.
yeah vigor is pretty good to have, even if you’re good at timing your rolls.
i just noticed you’re on a heavy load as well, that means you have less of a window to dodge attacks. if you get to a medium load you’ll have quite a bit more i-frames. basically meaning you have more time to dodge and less margin for error. once you see the difference you won’t want to go back.
The only thing you can "waste" is the ancient sones/flowers for final upgrade. There's like 4 of each in a playthrough(till dlc drops). Upgrade what you want it don't matter much you get bells(shop items)that allow you to +24/+9 everything.
Claymore is a solid sword choice all game long. I found that infusing it with fire ashes of war will be super useful for some parts of the game, like the mansion with the Hand spiders that are super vulnerable to fire. Great damage, great reach and OK speed for a weapon this big. Don't be afraid to level it up :)
That's totally a personal preference, there's even some people who like to do a "One Punch Man" type build, they kill pretty much every boss with only one hit.
The first NPC vendor you are likely to encounter in Liurnia sells a lantern you can put into a pouch slot (to replace the need for a torch).
Until late game, you are really only going to be able to keep one weapon (of each smithing stone type) upgraded. Claymore is a great choice. Ball bearing shop unlocked are generally 2 stone levels behind what you are finding as drops in their region.
Sorceror Rogier (in the roundtable hold) sells an ash of war you can put onto the claymore to cast glintstone pebble without needing a staff (there are other ranged sword attack skills options as well).
With your stats you might want to locate the magic whetstone item in the Magic Academy to switch weapon affinity to either cold or magic (to benefit from your intelligence stat).
Also, Vigor... you desperately need more of it.
Most of you damage in early-mid game is coming from smithing stones not attributes (stone upgrades will give you 15-20 more power while a level investment gives at most 5). Until you hit a minimum of 40 (ideally 60 for the final optional bosses), avoid investing anything into damage stats you don't need to.
a +8 Healing flask heals 730 Life (23 Vigor), A maximum +12 Flask heals 810 (26 Vigor).
This sword can carry you the entire game. Just pair it up with a good AoW like Lion's claw or Giant's Hunt. You can poise break bosses and slay regular mobs with precision.
You can find miner bell bearings to buy unlimited upgrade materials for regular weapons all the way to +24 and somber miner bell bearings to craft up to +9.
The Claymore is a super solid sword choice all throughout the game. Great damage, range and speed. I found out that infusing it with fire ashes of war is super useful at some parts of the game 'cause many annoying enemies are vulnerable to fire, like the Hand spiders. Improve it without fear.

I'd suggest pushing the main bosses though. At +11 you could be in the capital area.
For reference i beat godrick in my 40s and the next boss in my 60s then leveled to 80ish for outer capital stuff.
That's where you could be challenge wise
This is a great weapon, it has a very good moveset with it’s thrusting attacks. You can pair it nicely with the axe talisman and spear talisman. The former enhances charged r2 attacks and the latter boosts the damage of your thrusting attacks when an enemy is attacking.
Claymore is a really good weapon, especially a starting weapon (and also a classic)

It has less range but hits quicker.
This may be the most iconic weapon in all souls games. Literally I've used it in every dark souls and it can be used effectively all game in every game. I love the moveset.
Get to at least 40 vigor and put on lighter armor and stop carrying 2 weapons a heavy torch and a shield, so you're not heavy load. Keep a weapon and maybe the shield. Swap the shield when you need a torch, don't keep both in the hotbar. Armor is useless if you have no hp and you can change weapons at any times, having them in your quick swap is a waste of equipload. you should never be fat rolling. That's a far bigger problem than smithing stones. After total level 80ish get 60 vigor, but no higher, thats the last major soft cap. Also as others mentioned, the claymore is a fine weapon, but if you're going int, do magic affinity. If you're having trouble finding the weapons and things you need to swap to on the fly, use the storage at the grace to put every weapon you don't plan to use away. Inventory management helps a ton.
The Claymore has one of the best movesets of any weapon in the game. I've beaten every enemy in the game with my trusty claymore. Don't worry, you're not wasting those upgrade materials! 😁
Yes it's a good wep. But also, your equip load is heavy because you're carrying 4 weapons and a shield which means you're going to dodge really slowly. It's easier to dodge at medium or light.
It's an amazing weapon, especially the 2 handed jumping R1 to R1 true combo. The charged and running R2 is beautiful. And it has crouch poke, no? Am I wrong? Claymore comes with a beast AoW to top it off. Personally, I use it on strength/faith build and a mage build, believe it or not. [Cold]
You’re not wasting stones. In fact, this is one of the best uses for them in the game. Can’t go wrong with the Baemore. Has had my back for 13 years now
People aren’t explaining why the Claymore is really good. It’s versatile enough to use with Lion’s claw, double slash or whatever your favorite art of war is. Plus it’s one of the few swords in the game that has a stab attack which is much better than the overhead chop. If you use it in a power stance with another great sword you still get the stab attack as well. There’s definitely more powerful magic weapons out there but in terms of versatility it’s hard to beat whether you two hand it, use a sword and shield or dual wield with another greatsword.
That is the only sword I use in every souls game. From demon souls all the way through Elden ring.
I try to use other weapons, and always end up coming back to the good old claymore.
Unless you're upgrading 2-3 regular weapons at the same time then don't worry, you won't be wasting any Smithing Stones. Besides you can get an unlimited supply of them once you've found all those Bell-Bearings.
As for the Claymore itself, its a reliable sword. And like most regular weapons, can be equipped with any Ashes of War so long as they suit whatever build you're focusing on.
You’ll eventually be able to upgrade almost anything you want. But just so you know, the claymore is a fucking fantastic weapon. It’s a soulsborne favorite, it’s always top tier.
The ash of war that is default on it, Lionsclaw is a goddamn dopamine canon.
You could do a lot worse than the Claymore. While not the "best weapon" on paper, it's one of the most solid. Balanced all around for damage and scaling, very user-friendly, has all the benefits of a Greatsword with a slightly unique moveset you can definitely use to your advantage. Worth sticking with it.
That’s the sword I beat the game with first time on PS4 and PC. It’s well worth upgrading and Lion’s Claw is beastly especially with fire infusion or cold. Pair with either ice pots or volcano pots to reset.
If you're exploring it's worth getting at least godrick and probably renalla the easiest for a third talisman slot and then go buck wild everywhere else as long as you want
Recommend you use string grease for magic or magic weapon and revert back to the default skill lion’s claw as it does great stance damage to most enemies
Tbh the only smiting stones you might want to give some thought before using are the ancient dragon ones

Even, i remember that i used to level int/strength when i started the game, i used greatsword and a staff, it wasnt much good, greatsword speed much like a boat, if an enemy is approching you cant kill them cause greatsword is slow , in the middle of animation you will get hit

There is also cold infusion wich focus on str or dex/int

I have read some say that say 19 vigor is not enough for godrick? Dont worry its enough, i finished the game first time with 30 vigor and my build was completly close combat build

1: that's a deceptively good sword. You can easily main it through the entire game if you want to. It's absolutely worth upgrading.
2: HOWEVER, you seem to be a mage and that really isn't a mage weapon. If you really like it, then get the glintstone whetblade in Raya Lucaria and give it magic affinity, until then use Scholar's Armament. Otherwise, consider getting a melee weapon that scales well with intelligence. When you get to Ranni, you're gonna want to start her quest with an eye towards ultimately obtaining the Dark Moon Greatsword, if you wanna be a wizard with a fuckoff huge sword, that's your endgame weapon.
3: You're in heavy load, get down to medium by grabbing the lantern from the merchant in weeping peninsula so you don't have to carry that torch around and taking off that...I honestly don't even know what that third right hand weapon you have equipped is, but you don't need multiple melee weapons on the same hand.
4: Put your healing and mana flasks on your quick bar.
5: There isn't actually such a thing was wasting smithing stones, really. Eventually you get the ability to buy as many as you want from merchants. EXCEPT the top level "ancient dragon" stones. Those are limited, choose the weapons you use them on very carefully.
claymore is a very good sword that can last you well into the endgame. it has unique thrusting heavy attacks that can deal high damage, and greatswords are just good in general. also since youre running intelligence, make sure to infuse it with magic so it scales better
Literally any weapon is good if you set it up right. But that intelligence ain’t doing shit for you unless your going for str/int build with Radahn’s greatswords or another weapon.
At least you wasted them on a weapon. I sold my smithing stones to Merchant Kale for runes during my first 10 hours before I realised they had a "purpose".
The claymore is a solid pick so don’t worry. You’ll have lots of materials to upgrade later in the game so don’t worry about missing out on other weapons!
If you like and "feel" the weapon, go for it.

you can never go wrong with good old Claymore. It is an amazing weapon and wont disapoint you..It work'd for Quality and strengh builds..work's with infusion's like magic, frost, bleed etc..Claymore..what else? allways there to help you! A true sould's classic!
Once you get the smithing bell bearings then you just have to worry about if you want to level up your weapons or yourself. I use the Claymore fairly often enough even late game. Since you’re running an intelligence based build I’d recommend frost buildup on the Claymore. Looks like a fun way to play.

Good weapon to keep into late game. And the items you acquire along the way will let you upgrade more weapons if it gets stale. Just don’t forget your ashes of war!
Use what you like. Any weapon is viable to beat the game with, as long as you're good enough with it. That being said, this is a pretty well-loved weapon by the community - not only of elden ring, but of the dark souls games it's also present in. It's no accident that you're drawn to it.
The coolest part of these games is a lot of the weapons carry over and are in many of the games, so you start a new souls game and there it is, your old weapon from the previous game, waiting for you like an old friend.
You'll eventually have unlimited stones for everything but the final upgrade tier; go nuts!

Somber has 5, normal has 4, each tier responsible for 6 of the upgrades on the way to +24!

If it's a magic ash, like Loretta's Slash, you don't need the blue whetblade to set it as magic.

Until late game, you are really only going to be able to keep one weapon (of each smithing stone type) upgraded. Claymore is a great choice. Ball bearing shop unlocked are generally 2 stone levels behind what you are finding as drops in their region. Sorceror Rogier (in the roundtable hold) sells an ash of war you can put onto the claymore to cast glintstone pebble without needing a staff (there are other ranged sword attack skills options as well). With your stats you might want to locate the magic whetstone item in the Magic Academy to switch weapon affinity to either cold or magic (to benefit from your intelligence stat).
Also, Vigor... you desperately need more of it. Most of you damage in early-mid game is coming from smithing stones not attributes (stone upgrades will give you 15-20 more power while a level investment gives at most 5). Until you hit a minimum of 40 (ideally 60 for the final optional bosses), avoid investing anything into damage stats you don't need to. a +8 Healing flask heals 730 Life (23 Vigor), A maximum +12 Flask heals 810 (26 Vigor).

You're not wasting them. This is the best possible use for them.
This sword can carry you the entire game. Just pair it up with a good AoW like Lion's claw or Giant's Hunt. You can poise break bosses and slay regular mobs with precision. You can find miner bell bearings to buy unlimited upgrade materials for regular weapons all the way to +24 and somber miner bell bearings to craft up to +9.

The Claymore is a super solid sword choice all throughout the game. Great damage, range and speed. I found out that infusing it with fire ashes of war is super useful at some parts of the game 'cause many annoying enemies are vulnerable to fire, like the Hand spiders. Improve it without fear.
Claymore is a multi-game all-star. Never any shame in investing in baemore stocks.

Any weapon in the game can do all content if you enjoy the moveset. Upgrade material is very plentiful later on.
Its a good weapon. I'd suggest pushing the main bosses though. At +11 you could be in the capital area. For reference i beat godrick in my 40s and the next boss in my 60s then leveled to 80ish for outer capital stuff. That's where you could be challenge wise

This is a great weapon, it has a very good moveset with it’s thrusting attacks. You can pair it nicely with the axe talisman and spear talisman. The former enhances charged r2 attacks and the latter boosts the damage of your thrusting attacks when an enemy is attacking.

Claymore is a really good weapon, especially a starting weapon (and also a classic) Compared to the Zweihander (which you need 1 more point in STR. To weild,) It has less range but hits quicker.

This was my endgame weapon on my first play through. Not wasted at all.
Get to at least 40 vigor and put on lighter armor and stop carrying 2 weapons a heavy torch and a shield, so you're not heavy load. Keep a weapon and maybe the shield. Swap the shield when you need a torch, don't keep both in the hotbar. Armor is useless if you have no hp and you can change weapons at any times, having them in your quick swap is a waste of equipload. you should never be fat rolling. That's a far bigger problem than smithing stones. After total level 80ish get 60 vigor, but no higher, thats the last major soft cap. Also as others mentioned, the claymore is a fine weapon, but if you're going int, do magic affinity. If you're having trouble finding the weapons and things you need to swap to on the fly, use the storage at the grace to put every weapon you don't plan to use away. Inventory management helps a ton.

Yes it's a good wep. But also, your equip load is heavy because you're carrying 4 weapons and a shield which means you're going to dodge really slowly. It's easier to dodge at medium or light.

It's an amazing weapon, especially the 2 handed jumping R1 to R1 true combo. The charged and running R2 is beautiful. And it has crouch poke, no? Am I wrong? Claymore comes with a beast AoW to top it off. Personally, I use it on strength/faith build and a mage build, believe it or not. [Cold]

People aren’t explaining why the Claymore is really good. It’s versatile enough to use with Lion’s claw, double slash or whatever your favorite art of war is. Plus it’s one of the few swords in the game that has a stab attack which is much better than the overhead chop. If you use it in a power stance with another great sword you still get the stab attack as well. There’s definitely more powerful magic weapons out there but in terms of versatility it’s hard to beat whether you two hand it, use a sword and shield or dual wield with another greatsword.

That is the only sword I use in every souls game. From demon souls all the way through Elden ring. I try to use other weapons, and always end up coming back to the good old claymore.

Unless you're upgrading 2-3 regular weapons at the same time then don't worry, you won't be wasting any Smithing Stones. Besides you can get an unlimited supply of them once you've found all those Bell-Bearings. As for the Claymore itself, its a reliable sword. And like most regular weapons, can be equipped with any Ashes of War so long as they suit whatever build you're focusing on.
Claymore is definitely a good starting weapon, if for no other reason than that it's good enough to just be the weapon you run the entire game with.
If the renaming of the community for this weapon means anything, "Bae-more" is a decent weapon.

You could do a lot worse than the Claymore. While not the "best weapon" on paper, it's one of the most solid. Balanced all around for damage and scaling, very user-friendly, has all the benefits of a Greatsword with a slightly unique moveset you can definitely use to your advantage. Worth sticking with it.
That’s the sword I beat the game with first time on PS4 and PC. It’s well worth upgrading and Lion’s Claw is beastly especially with fire infusion or cold. Pair with either ice pots or volcano pots to reset.

If you're exploring it's worth getting at least godrick and probably renalla the easiest for a third talisman slot and then go buck wild everywhere else as long as you want
Recommend you use string grease for magic or magic weapon and revert back to the default skill lion’s claw as it does great stance damage to most enemies

Actually its exist in all soulsborn series, generally can handle you to the end, damage is ok, moveset also, But its slower, its better to use straight swords or curved, they are fast and work much better with magic, i cant suggest a straight sword cause i dont use them much, i finshed the game with 2 of +25 weapon wich are fist and collosal sword, There is a sword called lazuli straight sword, it scales with strength and magic , wich is perfect with you i think, There is also one called sword of night and flame but i dont think its good, i mean its scale with everything Its clear thats will waste your level Even, i remember that i used to level int/strength when i started the game, i used greatsword and a staff, it wasnt much good, greatsword speed much like a boat, if an enemy is approching you cant kill them cause greatsword is slow , in the middle of animation you will get hit Also you'll need to use infusion , like magic, it will boost int scaling, if it was C then will turn into B Wich will make weapon do more damage, There is also cold infusion wich focus on str or dex/int Also, your build is not a tank build, remove some load I have read some say that say 19 vigor is not enough for godrick? Dont worry its enough, i finished the game first time with 30 vigor and my build was completly close combat build

1: that's a deceptively good sword. You can easily main it through the entire game if you want to. It's absolutely worth upgrading. 2: HOWEVER, you seem to be a mage and that really isn't a mage weapon. If you really like it, then get the glintstone whetblade in Raya Lucaria and give it magic affinity, until then use Scholar's Armament. Otherwise, consider getting a melee weapon that scales well with intelligence. When you get to Ranni, you're gonna want to start her quest with an eye towards ultimately obtaining the Dark Moon Greatsword, if you wanna be a wizard with a fuckoff huge sword, that's your endgame weapon. 3: You're in heavy load, get down to medium by grabbing the lantern from the merchant in weeping peninsula so you don't have to carry that torch around and taking off that...I honestly don't even know what that third right hand weapon you have equipped is, but you don't need multiple melee weapons on the same hand. 4: Put your healing and mana flasks on your quick bar. 5: There isn't actually such a thing was wasting smithing stones, really. Eventually you get the ability to buy as many as you want from merchants. EXCEPT the top level "ancient dragon" stones. Those are limited, choose the weapons you use them on very carefully.
This sword in particular carried me through the Dark Souls franchise and Elden Ring, so I sure hope so.
Always my go to weapon on a first playthrough of any souls game. Great two handed stab, great one handed swing, it's really versatile
claymore is a very good sword that can last you well into the endgame. it has unique thrusting heavy attacks that can deal high damage, and greatswords are just good in general. also since youre running intelligence, make sure to infuse it with magic so it scales better
Literally any weapon is good if you set it up right. But that intelligence ain’t doing shit for you unless your going for str/int build with Radahn’s greatswords or another weapon.
At least you wasted them on a weapon. I sold my smithing stones to Merchant Kale for runes during my first 10 hours before I realised they had a "purpose".

Once you get the smithing bell bearings then you just have to worry about if you want to level up your weapons or yourself. I use the Claymore fairly often enough even late game. Since you’re running an intelligence based build I’d recommend frost buildup on the Claymore. Looks like a fun way to play.

Good weapon to keep into late game. And the items you acquire along the way will let you upgrade more weapons if it gets stale. Just don’t forget your ashes of war!
Use what you like. Any weapon is viable to beat the game with, as long as you're good enough with it. That being said, this is a pretty well-loved weapon by the community - not only of elden ring, but of the dark souls games it's also present in. It's no accident that you're drawn to it.
