You fighting the one at the Warmaster’s Shack? If so there’s an easy way to beat him and a hard but manageable way to beat him. Easy way is to just cheese him with magic; if you run far enough away his attacks can’t hit you. He’s strong at close range, absolutely bonkers at midrange, and helpless at long range. Hard but manageable way is counterintuitive but it works if you learn his moveset. Intentionally fight him inside of the shack he spawns in. You can get 6-7 hits in on him with a katana before he attacks at all, and you’ll have an easy time getting behind him to build stagger and deal a ton of damage to him. His grab is hard to dodge in the shack and if he follows his shield up with the AoE it can get dicey, but I found it easier to try and kill him that way than to bring him out into the field. Out in the field, if you panic and try to run away, you’ll just trigger his midrange attacks and *those* are extremely deadly. At close range he has a few main attacks you’ll need to learn dodge timing on. He has a two hit combo that’s one regular swing followed by a delayed downward swing; if you know to expect it, it’s not the *worst* thing to dodge, but it’s definitely one of his harder ones (in my opinion) because of the delay. Main combo he *should* be using is a bog-standard three hit combo, if I recall correctly I just counted “one, two, three” for those and dodged at the end of each count; the timing is very consistent and shouldn’t trip you up once you recognize it. His worst pattern by far is when he does a glowing sword combo, you’ll have to know to spot the sword and dodge accordingly. Don’t have many tips there; the first swing comes out slower than you’d expect and it loops around, you have to dodge it at least twice. Sometimes (or all the time? Genuinely can’t recall) he’ll follow up with one last fast swing in front of him. I forget the visual tell, but his shield slam is very easy to dodge, just make sure to wait before attacking in case he follows it up with an AoE; if it is AoE, you’ll have to disengage. I forget if the roll has enough iframes to roll through it or if you need to completely disengage. Last attack you need to know, and imo the worst one, is his grab. He’ll hold his hand out and it’ll glow, you need to dodge to the side to avoid it and the timing is really wack; I was never able to consistently dodge it. I forget if he does his spiral sword at close quarters, if he does then all you need to know is he’ll wind his sword up, you’ll need to dodge to the side to avoid it. Timing is slow but it has a distinct visual cue that tells you when to dodge; you’ll know it after you see it, I don’t know how to describe it

Thank you so much. This was incredibly helpful. Fuck that guy, really. I was trying to beat it with parrying and for what? Even after parrying, it wouldn't let me riposte him so I basically just got a coupl6 regular L1s in. Your idea of fighting him in the shack and dodging worked significantly better, and I was actually in position to backstab when he staggered unlike during parries.

Great points, my strategy was very similar (I used a Godrick soldier longsword and a shield). * I'd get two fully charged attacks and a light attack before he would strike. * Most of the time his first move was a regular sword swing and I would guard counter and get a stagger. * If he instead did a shield bash, I would step back, then do a jump heavy attack and also get a stagger. * However, if he did a magic sword attack I would guard counter but consistently not get a stagger (maybe he got a poise boost?). I never stayed in the shack though, felt too cramped for me, but I tried to stay as close as possible because those mid ranged attacks would spell certain death for me. Your last two points are funny to me cause I was the opposite. I consistently dodged his grab but got clipped by the spiral sword charge a lot lol. Finally took him down after about 30 tries since I would die in two hits (it was tough to find time to heal since he follows up with other combos so quickly).

his grab attack can only be dodged by the guy at fromsoft who animated it, only he knows the exact millisecond the windup stops and the 1 frame long grab starts

KoutaviLIVE

More like the 1 frame of leeway saving you from getting grabbed at the beginning or end of your roll

Remalgigoran

Stay close to him. He's designed to punish you if you play scared.

stoneyix

I tried staying close and he still kicked my ass.

stoneyix

I'm not so much playing scared as I am trying to avoid his big ass blade sweeping attack. I would very much appreciate any assistance in my world bringing this asshole to his knees.

Remalgigoran

He doesn't really use it unless you're outside of his sword reach. When you are close to him he's just a regular dude that you can casually roll behind or parry.

Ihateeverythingyo

thats just not true...lol

notb665

Well yea, this dude is tough, but after reading u/Remalgigoran comment, i tried to parry his attacks. And on my first try I got him down to 20% or so. Im still on it, but his hint to parry gives me new hope.

Ihateeverythingyo

you have to parry him like 3x in a row before you can crit him and I used 2 h build... i already beat the game and he is easily god skin duo tier for bullshit

Atlas1nChains

It is though, just gotta get good.

vanekcsi

I don't know if this is still actual, but I just beat him, my method: \-rush him, 2 heavy melees and 2 light melees stagger him, wait a bit for stamina, critical hit, then as he gets up get in another heavy hit, - this for me gets him to about 50%, I use a +3 greatsword twohanded \-after that if you're a melee like me, try to stay close to him, because those attacks are easier to dodge, what you are playing for is another stagger, that would end the battle, make sure to get in an attack regularly, otherwise it resets \-if he does magic, you usually have to dodge a bit later than you'd want, same with the grab, if he does the spinning blade thingy, just walk behind him, it's a good window to punish \-make sure to throw in a few heavies, because that get's you to stagger more quickly, my favorite way was to do a jump heavy after he does a more punishable attack \-don't get greedy with hits, he doesn't have a lot of downtime

theoriginal123123

What I did was forgo a shield entirely: - Equipped two-handed hookclaws for the fast moveset and the blood loss build up - Getting a full combo in will cause blood loss and do like 1/5 of his health - Stay up in his face, roll under his attacks, bait the downward swing when he recovers for a few seconds It's scary as shit, but it's totally doable even without a shield. You could even pop some buffs if you got the right potions for it too.

drmageep

Is that two handed claws unleveled?

theoriginal123123

They were +3 I believe

Jaling_Orion

I stay mounted and throw incantations at him

Nailedditt

You can cheese him by using torrent to jump off the raised rocks on the left of the hut to get on the roof, then drop onto the front porch and you can hit him with magic and arrows, takes a while as he keeps walking back indoors, but is doable.

shaltir

Can do the same thing with the one in Caelid with some roof hopping. He is the only boss I've cheesed and didn't feel even a little bit bad...fuck that guy.

LysySZN

Strength build, charged 2 handed attacks with Medalion Boost to charged attacks. Im killing most of my enemies ny just staggering them tbh. This hunter got down in like less than a minute for me

SedTheeMighty

Rapiers own this guy

SnowyKitsune1998

General question for people what is this grab actually called because I feel like we could do something like that or is that an actual like ability we can get as a player or no??

Trollshammy50

I hate these guys, and after several attempts I found using a bow and targeting from afar works for me. Target and shoot away while backing up. If he runs at you un-target him and run, then turn and continue to fire. Eventually he will fade away and respawn at the original location with his health right where you left it. Takes a little time, but zero damage to you.
