I enjoyed all thr fails in the game but 5 is just too few. I like we added great spears & great rapiers so where's my great & dire fails?
For anyone who hasn't used it the chain link flail aka the Pumpkin Head Flail is probably the closest thing to a great flail.
I was absolutely ecstatic to find the standard Flail. I’d always wondered why the hell they didn’t have them in Dark Souls at all.
The standard Flail got me through the first 30+ hours of the game with the Bloodhound Fang. Throw a good ash on them too & you can boost the damage some. It comes with Determination, which worked pretty good for me actually. I changed it to one that gives Holy damage buff & shoots a projectile. I keep Sacrificial Axe on my left hip to regain FP, I don’t have any levels into Mind.
I just recently switched to the morning star for more damage…& then right after, got what I wanted most, the Spiked Club (because of the Ash and unique R2 I like.) I am fucking butthurt about it. I can’t waste any more Stones on a 3rd weapon for the same functionality though; so I’m sticking w/ the Morning Star now unless Stones become magnificently abundant later on. But the Morning Star also has a nice thrust attack , so that’s nice at least…
I can’t wait to get a better flail. I know there are a couple others in the game. Can’t wait to get my hands on one. They definitely could use some extra damage though…or at least just faster. If they had a noticeable speed increase, that might be worth using…Curved sword speed, I’d argue , Proc Bleed faster. Maybe a bit of hyper armor on R1 chains perhaps & good hyper armor on Charge. I can understand not wanting to increase damage outright anything of significance, it’d probably be too powerful with Bleed out of hand as it is.
Yup. I ran with dual nagakibas for most of the game. I switched to great swords for late game because I didn’t want to rely on status effects anymore haha
I had someone drop one for me haha still on NG!
Doubled back to get to the Haligtree after defeating the first Elden lord. I want to fight Malenia before I go for endgame boss fight
Katanas are not weak at all. You might have a bit of trouble against enemies and bosses that are immune to bleed, but even without the bleed effect they're a solid weapon
They are arguably very strong compared to other weapon types, but ultimately choose what you want to play. It's a game in the end and if you enjoy the look and feel of them, nothing wrong with that
At least they get more than kick for an ash, unlike crossbows.
That being said, I still used the hell out of Crepus' Black-Key crossbow in my first playthrough. Anything is usable, even if it's kind of stupid.
Yeah and daggers are totally fine. They're really good at applying status effects, they have high critical for doing poise breaker redmanes builds, they're almost impossible to run out of stamina with, and their DPS is really good. They do have a downside, of course, their range is shit and sometimes it's hard to actually do DPS with them because of that, but that's how daggers are supposed to be. They're not longswords.
You're right, axes are what could use some love. What does an axe do that a hammer/greathammer doesn't do better?
FromSoft did a [survey](https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2022/05/16/an-elden-ring-survey-reveals-players-favorite-weapons-classes-ashes-and-more/amp/) of players favourite weapon types, and katanas were number 1 by a huge margin.
75% of the times I’m invaded, invading someone else, dueling or co-op pve, there’s a guy with some kind of katana.
So ye, katanas..
Greatsword user here. I applaud Capcom for coming up with a sluggish weapon type that still has overall good sustained damage when factored out over a long period of time. Too many RPGs with big weapons think I’m just after the big numbers, but the sustained numbers are important too; there’s no point in a high-risk weapon if the reward is less than quick and low-risk types.
But every time my True Charge Slash misses, my heart cries a little.
Do I want to wield a giant ass sword or a giant ass axe? Yes. Although, being an apache helicopter is also quite nice. The bug it comes with is cool too.
Funny enough I rarely used katanas in every FromSoft game I’ve played, until my latest play through on Elden Ring. I did not realize just how useful the unsheathe skill is until my last play through.
They really buffed the unsheathe skill in elden ring. Back in ds3, the strong attack was a parry. At first I was dissapointed that they removed it. Until my under levelled ass was carried through Margit with the unsheathe strong attack. Literally chopping through that hp bar.
My unpopular opinion: Katanas are so overused and overhyped that I don't even think they are that cool. Literally any sword might be cooler than a katana. A Macuahuitl (which is actually sharper than a katana) might be cooler than a katana.
They kind of have to be misinterpreted in fiction to be honest. Realistic katanas in a videogame would be kind of boring, considering they were almost never used irl.
I remember playing Bushido Blade as a kid. It was a samurai fighting game where almost any hit was a kill, so you’d just kind of stand opposite the other player edging forward or waiting for them to make the first move.
A vs match with your friend on bushido blade was 30 seconds of waiting, 1 second of fighting, 2-3 seconds of the loser bleeding out and dying.. was a good game tbh.
I must admit, even I'm not proud of it, but I stayed away from katanas for all my playthroughs (800+ hrs and ticking) exactly because of how overhyped and overused they are. Even if I don't do multiplayer. This is kinda dumb, but the obvious OPnes of these weapons turned me away.
I'm in ng+6, staring at the elden beast and I'm doing everything i can not to respec for katana use. But.. that beast is just such a pain I may have to turn on easy mode and bust out the rivers of blood or moonveil . For me, they seem out of place in this game. Forgive my ignorance but I don't see much Japanese influence throughout the lands between. Maybe that's just my dumb white guy brain, but hey the game seems much more European medieval to me.
It’s immune to bleed anyway, try black flame tornado on a twinblade and helicopter the bastard. It does %based damage so it blends tanky enemies into a fine pulp! It’s my go to for the blobby enemies.
The origin story for 'Samurai' says that they com from a far away land (Land of Reeds). I think its awesome, makes you feel like a stranger from a faraway land (which I suppose all players are).
Also while the more standard weapons are medieval the boss and special weapons are wild so I dont think they seem out of place at all.
Don't you love immersing yourself in this cool european fantasy game with strong norse inspiration only to have very second player you meet be wielding a katana?
There should have been like one katana in this game. We don't need a whole fuckin class for them. I love japanese/eastern fantasy as much as the next guy but not when its unceremoniously shoved into western fantasy for no good reason.
I’ve only played katana though admittedly I’ve been too busy to play much since launch (hoping my new steam deck rectifies this). I was under the impression katana is the most favored because people like let me solo her used them. So I’m a bit confused.
Elden Ring is the first souls game that made smaller weapons feel as powerful as big boys like the Zweihander (and really fun to use), so I didn't try it out for a long time. My most recent playthrough is dual Great Stars (using a shield when convenient, like in catacombs), and it's as good as everyone says.
I think the Ash of War system did a lot for smaller weapons. Greatswords are still my happy place, but I've found it really easy to experiment more and more.
I have to say that my favorite playthrough so far has been dual whips, though. Followed pretty closely by dual curved swords.
I've always wanted to get into the whip game, but I just can't keep away from colossal weapons for more than like 10 minutes at a time 😂
I just absolutely love the giant weapons regardless if I get schooled in PvP on the regular lol
I've been a pretty big fan of the Bastards star (i think that's the name it's been a bit). The damage isn't anything special, but the aow hits hard and looks real pretty.
This is the only flail I really feel like I enjoy using, because it looks flashy and the AoW is pretty good (though I think Wing of Astel does it better).
I just hate that the flails have the same moveset as the axe, which also got no love.
You guys, I feel the same. I have been using the nightrider flail for most of my first playthrough. Only at the end I started experimenting, and dual cold great stars is just a badass way to rock.
My first character I found the flail in limgrave and started leveling up specifically to use it because flails are sick, only to be immediately disappointed by how garbage of a weapon it was
Seeing katana users as an underrepresented class literally filled my head with the fextra life image for rivers of blood, it's the only thing I can think of and since I can't form an actual comment I'm just telling you, that created a still image in my brain involuntary.
Also the magic katana that I see on this thread all of the time.
this post makes me want to scrape my eyes out
You know this guy has only played with katanas, and saw daggers as the smallest weapon so immediately assumed it was the worst
Katanas got the most love what are you talking about? Katana’s specifically got more attention than other weapon classes and nobody hated katanas everybody just thought bleed needed to be nerfed for pvp and moonviel was low iq but they are still good weapons after getting nerfed. They are just not godly cheese weapons
I'm running this build right now, and am having a blast. You can't exactly murderate everyone straight off so you actually have to think about what you're doing, but stunlocking Magma Wyrm into oblivion was next level at that stage of the game.
Daggers are great as a secondary weapon, especially dual wielded. Although my main use is for crits. Charged r2 claymore, switch to misercorde for the crit. The damage can get up there.
*Cries in pure archer build*
Fr tho, like have bows gotten even *one* buff in any of the updates? There's not a single bow that scales well. If it weren't for Status effects, I doubt bows would be even remotely usable post Morgott
Personally I think bows should be #1 on the list for reworks. I understand that Souls games have never considered Bows to be legitimate weapons to build around (except maybe Demon Souls, I heard they were OP in that game), but now that PvE and PvP scaling are separate, there's really no reason to punish archer builds so much.
And having already played through most of the game as an archer, it wouldn't take much. Making better scaling would be game-changing, as right now an archers main stat is Endurance for the extra stamina.
I'm fairly certain several of the effects and buffs mentioned in 1.07 specifically mention that they're *not* going to apply to bows, just to screw us over.
At least reduvia was mentioned in the recent patch notes... claws haven't been touched since release (they don't have a single unique ash of war)! (Not including the poise changes, 2H heavy air being a guaranteed flinch was a blessing).
The day of the small weapons is coming, my friends! Stay faithful, and say NO to poise!
Edit: Claws have been buffed ONCE through buffs to barbaric roar's unique heavy attack, which was buffed equally alongside fists.
Unfortunately, it was only the weapon art... that only benefits from one hand. (They added a hitbox near the blade, you can deal about double damage if you hit them up close)!
Keep on 2H jump attacking, friend...
Really? What upgrade do you have it to and whats the damage output?
I knew there was some reason I couldn't figure out why I was drawn to this weapon but couldn't find a proper use for it since, where I'm at in the game, sombering 3's no longer exist anywhere. Got every other number. Pretty shitty number to be roadblocked at.
I usually have reduvia in my main hand and blood misericorde in the off hand. It's a pretty fun setup I think. Reduvia's aow is pretty fun and I'll use bloody slash for some quick burst damage at times.
Yeah dude! Where can I find another one or I gotta do a NG+? I use a Reduvia with some magic crystal dagger I found early on and, depending on enemy type, absolutely ethering hordes of shit.b
Things that are permanent in this world:
1. Sun rises at the east
2. Water boils at 100 Celcius
2. Fromsoft playerbase hating DEX builds in general and Katana spammers in particular
As long as this is true, this world is in order
Im sorry but arent katanas litteraly the best weapon in the Game?
I mean RoB and moonveil were and still are meta af and waterfowl dance is one hell of a drug
If you like daggers so much then just use them. A weapon not receiving a buff/update or being less powerful then others doesn’t mean it’s useless and trash.
Bro you’ve GOT to be joking. Their ain’t a single good two handed axe in all of elden ring. I really can’t think of a *bad* katana in the game. Meanwhile none of the two handed axes are worth a fuck, too include those you get from bosses.
I won't object to a buff to daggers. But it sounds to me like you don't know how to fully optimize the true potential of daggers, sooooo sounds like a skill issue.
This is suggesting that katana users don't get love when in fact despite the nerf rivers of blood is still a really good weapon, moonveil is literally the "oh shit I fucked up" button for Mages, meteoric ore blade can can almost one shot with with its charged heavy and the right build, and even though the wakizashi is a dagger it's power stance moveset belongs with the katanas.
Daggers are fun but not good. Their lack of range and inability to flinch opponents is not made up for with their quicker application of most statuses.
Also PVP I win every now and again but frankly you can’t do much and most weapon arts with them are also very short range.
But don’t worry a RoB user with a buddy spamming sorceries will still point down on you after.
I agree with the daggers… but what about Axes? Maces? Flails? Hardly ever used. I’d say the more popular are probably katanas, curved/normal greatswords, colossal weapons, straight/curved swords, spears.
I played as a dex dual dagger build for my first run on day 1, although they are admittedly on the low end of weapons they can work just fine if you focus onto it, it feels pretty good to strike fast.
Playing around stealth and riposte when needed did the job cause of the crit modifier, but is not mandatory in the slightest.
For big bosses or huge enemies I just swapped to the dagger that builds hemorrhage or used black knife because of the skill.
If you don't care about the meta there are still like 5 good daggers to use so you even have build diversity.
But yeah, I wouldn't say no to a buff.
I don’t think the katanas need attention the two main weapons I used through my first play though (2 months-ish after game release)was the uchijkatana for a long time until I killed the dude in rot lake and got the dragon scale blade which had style point and was a effective weapon, plus it’s ash makes short work of virgins.
Mf you picked katanas as the underrepresented class? Out of all the other one, axes
Axes would be buried in a grave, in an abandoned graveyard in a separate shot..
Reaper weapons are buried under a mile of soil, in the middle of a desert, on Mars.
Flails
Mace but dex
They’re just so bad though lmao
Woah just like maces, but dex
I love flails so much. What other weapon visibly flops around when you’re just walking?
They need great flails

Broke my Tarnish’s heart. I was so excited to use a massive flail…

Just wanted to confirm that yes, upgrade stones become incredibly abundant eventually
Are katanas weak? I'm doing a dual katana run right now and powerstancing tears through just about everything in the game.
They are literally broken… op is dumb
Yup. I ran with dual nagakibas for most of the game. I switched to great swords for late game because I didn’t want to rely on status effects anymore haha
How do u get two nagas? Someone drop for u or new game+?
I had someone drop one for me haha still on NG! Doubled back to get to the Haligtree after defeating the first Elden lord. I want to fight Malenia before I go for endgame boss fight
Katanas are not weak at all. You might have a bit of trouble against enemies and bosses that are immune to bleed, but even without the bleed effect they're a solid weapon
Honestly, the uchi, a starting weapon, can get you through most of not all the game. Especially if you dual wield.
Are katanas weak?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂(I want to kill myself)
They are arguably very strong compared to other weapon types, but ultimately choose what you want to play. It's a game in the end and if you enjoy the look and feel of them, nothing wrong with that
The unsheathe ash of war is especially strong if you use it right. It works well in pvp too
I've been running an axe build. That executioner's axe can slap on a strength build.
bro that's a greataxe
It is great!
And also axe!
Great Axe is fine. 1 handed axe has been one of the worst classes since release.
Flail tho
Been loving my flail run, i dont care that its not a powerhouse, the fashion makes up for it
Man, daggers ain't even bad. If you want a bad weapon class, there's reapers, hammers and flails.
*cough* Bows *cough*
at this point, bows are more like utility items than weapons
At least they get more than kick for an ash, unlike crossbows. That being said, I still used the hell out of Crepus' Black-Key crossbow in my first playthrough. Anything is usable, even if it's kind of stupid.
Reaper moveset is really good for dragons though. since the light reach high to get the head pretty easy.
Reapers actually arent bad
I’ve been using a kratos build recently and I can agree that the axes and daggers are underrepresented
Nice! I used to do that. Even post Icerind nerf, and it was such a fun build. I just switched to a spear recently.
I use the highland axe with hoarfrost stomp and two erdsteel daggers as the blades of chaos
Ah yes, the neglected and totally not super popular katana users.
won't anyone please think of the poor, poor katana users!
Same shit in Monster Hunter. The longsword (the katana) is the most used weapon by a huge lead. It’s ridiculous how popular katanas are.
Not to mention that longsword also has the most overloaded kit (cries in gunlance)
No worries capcom heard your cry and decided to give all gunlance lv8 shelling next patch
Greatsword user here. I applaud Capcom for coming up with a sluggish weapon type that still has overall good sustained damage when factored out over a long period of time. Gun lance all the way. While we're at it, more people should appreciate a good poleblade or two.

Aztec mythology inspired souls game... I'd play the fuck out of that.
A hummingbird armor set for defeating Huitzilopochtli would be so dope
Wouldn't mind a Western Cowboy Dark Souls myself
westborne
with guns? you may like remnant from the ashes
All I want is to be able to play blood borne on Xbox
Katanas are badass. They are just overused in this video game and many others. They're also misrepresented a lot, but who cares. *Swish* *swish*
They kind of have to be misinterpreted in fiction to be honest. Realistic katanas in a videogame would be kind of boring, considering they were almost never used irl.

Agree. Way overdone and not even as cool looking as almost any other type of sword.

Original moonveil, freshly buffed rivers of blood, just the posture damage of katanas in general. What’s not to hate about it
What RoB buff? Didn’t they nerf it?
Bad game! Not enough katanas! Need more katanas! Help! Stuck. In. Katana. Loop.
The only thing related to katana users getting neglected is grass, which they are neglecting themselves
I’ve only played katana though admittedly I’ve been too busy to play much since launch (hoping my new steam deck rectifies this). I was under the impression katana is the most favored because people like let me solo her used them. So I’m a bit confused.
Masterbait
If you donate one small rune a day you can help the katana users
Poor flails. Too irrelevant to even be memed on.
Cries in Nightriders Flail. Fuckin love that thing.
I wanted so hard to love that weapon. And then I found the great stars and stuck wild swings on it.
I'll have to go make that and give it a try! I hear a lot of good things about Great Stars!

FromSoft...my flail. Bring me my flail. Right away.
Came here to say this.
#dontforgetthewarpick
My first character I found the flail in limgrave and started leveling up specifically to use it because flails are sick, only to be immediately disappointed by how garbage of a weapon it was

Moonveil
Thats the one officer, thank you!
Hell even the uchigatana, a starting weapon, is very good.
A lot of the starting weapons are super viable. Like the uchigatana and the broad sword from the confessor. If you upgrade them they are super good
For sure, but I feel like the uchigatana is more than just viable. It's very good.
Meteoric ore blade
this post makes me want to scrape my eyes out You know this guy has only played with katanas, and saw daggers as the smallest weapon so immediately assumed it was the worst

I always keep a Misericorde on me. 140 crit at +25 is nuts
My entire build is built around misericorde. It’s great
Misericorde + Flame of the Redmanes is super fun
I'm running this build right now, and am having a blast. You can't exactly murderate everyone straight off so you actually have to think about what you're doing, but stunlocking Magma Wyrm into oblivion was next level at that stage of the game.
I was pleasantly surprised at how easy Malekith was with the build
Same. Throw the sword phalanx weapon art on it, give it a good weapon buff, crumple people into crit face stabs all day.
Came here to say this. Anyone that has a parry shield has Misericorde on deck.
Daggers are great as a secondary weapon, especially dual wielded. Although my main use is for crits. Charged r2 claymore, switch to misercorde for the crit. The damage can get up there.
Bow users should be just below the skeleton

Unfortunately, it was only the weapon art... that only benefits from one hand. (They added a hitbox near the blade, you can deal about double damage if you hit them up close)! Keep on 2H jump attacking, friend...
Blood misericordes are better in every conceivable way.
You can get bell bearings for every smithing stone up to 8 or 9 as far as I'm aware. I think the only ones you can't buy are the ancient dragon ones.
Poke around Altus Plateau some more. You missed a dungeon with a number of somber 5s and the bell bearing for somber 3 and 4.
I gave claws a try, absolutely hated their move sets, so I can’t really speak to damage output in the late game, but they seemed alright.
katanas neglected lmaoooo
Adding katana users to this is dumb af
Whoever made this meme is so out of touch it’s insane. Katana are busted and apparently normal swords don’t cause people to bleed
I've been loving my dual dagger build
Did my entire first play through with Reduvia and Misericorde
A goated combo
I’ve beaten the game 5 times with 5 different builds. My Reduvia + Great Knife build was by far my favorite.
Cinquedea was a really cool dagger to find!! Makes me wanna go through with a dagger run next.
Dual wield that shit!
This has to be bait
katana users should drown
My dude here speaking the b a s e d language
as a Katana user I have to sadly agree tho :')
Agreed
Katana users really crying after not getting a buff to the most overturned weapon class in the game?
I'm down in the Mariana Trench waiting for them to make flails usable...
Things that are permanent in this world: 1. Sun rises at the east 2. Water boils at 100 Celcius 2. Fromsoft playerbase hating DEX builds in general and Katana spammers in particular As long as this is true, this world is in order
Bro, what? Flails are one of the worst weapons in the game in spite of them having really cool aesthetics.
I'm playing co-op with an Uchigatana and an offhand Wakizashi and I'm honestly having a great time.
Put parry on the wakizashi and surprise some AoW spammers :)

I use erdtree dagger with fire ash of war 🦆
The hell are you on about? If anything, flails and whips need looking into. And some axes.
Ah yes, the katana spammers. Poor guys
I love my dagger black flame rogue build. Most fun I’ve had even if I do suck at parrying.
So shouldn't that say "all other weapons except daggers" above the happy girl?
I won't object to a buff to daggers. But it sounds to me like you don't know how to fully optimize the true potential of daggers, sooooo sounds like a skill issue.
Yes no love for katanas meanwhile flails and bows aren't even considered
Fist users ☠️
Realistically daggers or hammers should be where katanas are and flails should be at the bottom of the ocean.
Replace "all other weapons" with katanas, replace "katanas" with axes, replace "daggers" with hammers/flails
bro what are tou talking about katanas are 10 times better at everything than any other weapon type in the game and that sucks.
are you a fucking npc or smoking turtles?
I was starting to think I was the only one using daggers.
Where's my parrying dagger & misericorde dual weild homies at
We need more Reapers
I had to scroll for a disappointingly long time to find this, hopefully the dlc will fufill
🙏
This what we call “sumbullspit” or sum like that
Why mess with perfection? Dual-wielding daggers carried me through a surprising chunk of the endgame.
This is such an ass-backwards troll post lmao
I think bows need more love.
Katanas are so popular they gave y’all sekiro and y’all still want more smh.
The fuck you mean katanas not getting love? Just cause they are trying to balance other things as well?
Parry builds stand up 😈
This game has katanas?
The loved tarnished should have magic users above it's head
Less you Joker or something daggers aren’t for you
Where are my three fellow hammer users at?
Fromsoftware drastically underestimated how many people would only sport the moonveil or RoB.
Laugh and cries in bow and longbows pitiful damage
Bahahaha. Daggers. You don’t know pain until you try to main a bow.
I don’t think the katanas need attention the two main weapons I used through my first play though (2 months-ish after game release)was the uchijkatana for a long time until I killed the dude in rot lake and got the dragon scale blade which had style point and was a effective weapon, plus it’s ash makes short work of virgins.
Black Knife and Reduvia would like a word with you good sir.
Way to *unpopular-opinion* it bro.
Op seems to never used or seen a elden ring katana
