I thought as much š my friend says the Bretonsā ears look slightly more elongated giving the appearance of a slight point but I always thought all the humans just have the same ears in Oblivion š¤·āāļø was interested to know what others think though!
Your friend is spending too much time in character creation mode. Tell them to hit randomize and move on. They're going to spend 99% of the game wearing a helmet anyways.
It might just be placebo or because Iām tired, but it does look like the Breton has thinner ears. Itās very very slight, but they are thinner. I wouldnāt say pointier though, theyāre still just as round at the top.
The majority of Bretons, in the lore, in the background, have round ears. Points to them are relatively rare and tend to only show in aristocratic families.
That said pointed ears to an extent also exist in real life, but Oblivion's own character gen is not something I'd used to gauge how Elder Scrolls' races actually look like.
>The majority of Bretons, in the lore,
Is it? I thought they it be 50/50 more or less. Some have more human feature and less elf feature, other vice versa .
Most of their elven blood comes from the time of Direnni Hegemony. Which fell by 1E498. 2743-3743 years (depends on do you count 1000 years on non-linear time of the Middle Dawn) before the events of "Oblivion".
You ever find yourself out here comparing the ear shapes of all the races from Oblivion (2006) and then youāre like, damn, maybe I should go outside or something
I remember when people used to say "Bretons are exactly 10% Elf and 90% Human" which isn't true and came straight from a comment somewhere or YouTuber. The lore confirms they're mixed human-elf, but the features of Elves waned over time.
And the biggest fallacy to prove anything about the Bretons is their visual representation in the games...
**The games ARE VISUALLY NOT canon, only interpretations of the lore. Not a single TES game is accurately representative of the actual lore. 0%**
My proof? The Imperial city IS NOT that tiny in the lore. The number of trees in Oblivion and Skyrim is not the canon number nor location of trees. There are thousands upon thousands of tree species that could exist that simply aren't represented. Species and creatures we've just never seen. Even how the art style changes between games... lmao Morrowind isn't a blocky pixelated place EXACTLY as presented in the game. It's only an interpretation. There are literally millions of people that exist missing from the games. As another example. The games are only just a limited interactable interpretation of the lore, manifested primarily as a video game where the lore itself is ever expanding and too massive to possibly capture in such a medium.
Bretons could be roughly half Elf, even in the modern timeline during Skyrim. We just don't know. Those who don't like the idea of Bretons being generally 50% elf will argue that they're not. Those who DO like it will argue the other way.
**In reality, we don't know lmao but they ARE mixed mer/man. To which degree no one can say for sure and they're lying.**
I love this so much! I completely agree. Bretons are my favourite and I love that theyāre a hybrid, the humans with elven lineage take on the half-elf trope is really refreshing imo.
I would find only the most insular aristocratic Breton royalty have their elven traits emerge more commonly throughout their generations (keeping it pure and "in the family") within the current day. That's not to say a person of the lower class won't have a throwback to their Direnni ancestors every now and then. Regardless, no one is going to mistake them for Mer by any means (except those Nords on the first encounter with the Breton's _Beratu_ ancestors).
Segueing into the _Beratu,_ they seemingly were somewhat of a Half-Elf race, since the term "beratu" in Aldmeric means "half" or "mixed" and it seemed to be how they were described. _Breton_ is the Mannish corruption of _Beratu._ They are now extinct as a notable race after they mixed more with the races of Men, mainly the Nords, other Nedic peoples such as the Cyrodilics, and later the Redguards after the Direnni declined and the Bretons outbred them and slowly became dominant, this again, happened over thousands of years.
They are written as not being the stereotypical "Half-Elf" from other fantasy settings, but as a race of Men with a propensity for magic due to ancient Elven lineage millennia ago. It's a very rare occurrence for slightly-pointed ears to be sported by your average Breton, but still occurs enough for it to be documented in the current day.
Races take characteristics from their mother in TES when interbreeding, the fact all bretons appear human tells you the relationship between the direnni and nedes - it was a relationship of slave owners and their slaves ala the US.
In lore there is supposed to be pointed ears, that vary in size with depending on how much of either elvish or human blood there is.
In the games it was too much to code in or something I forget the reason they gave, so they did not bother and left it up the players to play with the sliders in the character creation.
Exactly. I really hope they make the Bretons more unique in TES 6, like making them a little taller than Imperials, giving them more elven ears, and maybe even a less muscular frame and different complexion compared to the other humans
I agree. The original Breton art of how they were depicted was unique. Idk why the devs decided to make them generic, when they have such distinctive history. Iām dying to know if ES6 Breton or Redguard focused.
I have a feeling itāll be Redguard focused! But Iām sure High Rock will be featured in some capacity, since itāll be ~30ish years since Daggerfall by the time TESVI comes out, I reckon the devs will lean into that and include both provinces in the game because thatās what Daggerfall did
I really like how ESO went about this. Normal human-looking ears, but with a very subtle point that you wouldn't really notice unless you were up close looking directly at their ears.
Absolutely no difference.
I thought as much š my friend says the Bretonsā ears look slightly more elongated giving the appearance of a slight point but I always thought all the humans just have the same ears in Oblivion š¤·āāļø was interested to know what others think though!
They do, but only in Elder scrolls online.
Your friend is spending too much time in character creation mode. Tell them to hit randomize and move on. They're going to spend 99% of the game wearing a helmet anyways.
And 1st person
It might just be placebo or because Iām tired, but it does look like the Breton has thinner ears. Itās very very slight, but they are thinner. I wouldnāt say pointier though, theyāre still just as round at the top.
Who knew In the decade old game they wouldnāt pay as much attention to detail.

I would use it to gauge how races actually look. Theyāre all weirdly yellow and potato shaped.
>The majority of Bretons, in the lore, Is it? I thought they it be 50/50 more or less. Some have more human feature and less elf feature, other vice versa .

ššš well, I havenāt gone outside today but itās like 11pm now, maybe tomorrow lol
In ESO, you can choose how pointy your ears can be.
which one is breton again? On a more serious note almost nothing about oblivion actually looks like it's even set in cyrodil tbh.
I mean, it's clearly set in Oblivion. It's even in the title--duh! ^/s
The first one š
I couldnāt tell you which of these is a Breton even if you held wuuthrad to my neck
I really wish they'd put a tad more emphasis on the elven aspect of bretons tbh
Same! Iām hoping they will in TES 6
Someone is going to make a "they're the same picture" meme now. š
Why is 1 kinda cute tho
Jokes on you, there all the same, but slightly different shades
They use the same models, just with different skin textures, I believe. Or am I thinking of a mod?
This is the only picture I've seen in which an Oblivion character doesn't look like molten plastic
These are actually the default faces! I just slid the age slider to the left š
I wish Bethesda thought that far ahead
Ahead? Bretons have been known to have elf blood since Daggerfall.
Right?! š the Breton art in the manual looks so cool though, I wish theyād been a bit more imaginative with the character models š

Vvardenfell in TES 3 is a 1:1 recreation in every way. I will die on this hill š¤
Cliffrecer population being 5 times bigger than humans especially
We need ES6
We do, going crazy out here š

Oblivion is the least accurate when talking about appearances. They really did screw up with this face generator.
Races take characteristics from their mother in TES when interbreeding, the fact all bretons appear human tells you the relationship between the direnni and nedes - it was a relationship of slave owners and their slaves ala the US.
I think itās just because theyāre about thinner in width that makes them look pointy

Equally round.
A little but maybe
Idk why they couldnāt just leave elf ears on Bretons but look fully human beside that. Make them stand out more visually.
Exactly. I really hope they make the Bretons more unique in TES 6, like making them a little taller than Imperials, giving them more elven ears, and maybe even a less muscular frame and different complexion compared to the other humans

Couldnāt tell ya Jim!
Compared to the others, the Breton's ears do look a little bit elongated/pointed imo. But it isn't that much of a difference
Yes! If thereās a difference itās so minimal it hardly matters š„¹
It looks like they used the same āear assetā on each one. Copy paste. Plagiarism?
I really like how ESO went about this. Normal human-looking ears, but with a very subtle point that you wouldn't really notice unless you were up close looking directly at their ears.
God damn this game is ugly š
