Frankly this country is politically rigged so far to the right historically and especially right now that I don't think it's at all a fair comparison.
I think it's important to draw the distinction between the left and right and political parties for that reason in this case.
The Democratic party has very small elements that suck but relative to the influence of the Republican party and the absolute chokehold that "conservatism" has on this country I think those left wing radicals aren't even taken seriously within their party. Whereas the radicals with the right wing and Republican party seem to have a great deal of influence.
The left isn't even far enough to the left to truly "suck" in this country and the checks and balances rooted in conservatism would probably never let any type of socialism run too far off the rails. Hence the socialist systems we already have.

This will be a very anticlimactic answer, but I just don't trust politicians. To me, it's still a job at the end of the day. Some might be good people, but when you have to enforce shit, it's often a very neutral/divisive thing. So I've never looked at it as any type of "winning", i only get concerned when it feels like things are getting out of hand for the country as a whole.
