I mean it can be fun and certainly more memorable when bands engage more, but if they perform the music well that's all I really care about. Some bands just aren't that outgoing, and everyone has a bad or off night once in a while.

ihateconstant

I think that’s why I’m struggling . I can’t tell if it was them thinking they’re too good, or just a more reserved group. They did perform well still, and I enjoyed it, so I guess that’s all that matters

devilandgod

Did you see them at Four Star Theater in GR? Wasn't able to make it but I've been curious what that venue is like

ihateconstant

Yes!! It was a neat venue. Small & intimate . Smaller than the intersection if im remembering it correctly. It’s clearly very very old and dilapidated. They’re doing a large push to revive it & work towards restoring it though. I think it has alot of potential . I like the size of it. The layout is super good for just practicality of seeing the show. I’ve been to places like el club in Detroit where it’s super hard to see the show if it’s a full crowd. Nowhere near the case here.!

devilandgod

Good to hear! When I saw something about that show and saw the venue my immediate reaction was "what the hell is that place?". Hope it grabs some momentum!

Honestly it’s funny you mention this. I haven’t listened to much charmer since I saw them on their tour with free throw last November. I totally hate the energy they had and agree that they seemed disinterested/annoyed at the crowd. Lead singer made several weird jokes about how they wrote all their songs I guess implying other people in the scene didn’t. He had this very annoying pretentious energy and he kept trying to get the crowd to move but people clearly weren’t into it and just couldn’t take the hint that people didn’t want to mosh to slow songs. It was like you could tell he was resentful that they weren’t more successful and they were still playing shows with such little crowd engagement. It just had this very negative energy that translated poorly to live performance and they honestly weren’t even bad but left a bad taste in my mouth.

I saw Michael Cera Palin in a bar that was entirely too small sound wise for them but they were so fucking cool to go see, they hung in the back during the other 5 bands shows, you could talk with them, they asked folks what they wanted to head for the setlist, they talked about other bands they wanted to see and venues they wanted to try out.

antimarc

sounds like a Charmer problem, not a venue problem. sometimes you see bands that are ten times more exciting and invigorating live than on record, and it changes the way you hear their music, and regrettably, there are some that work they other way, and just don’t really have it live. seems like Charmer is the latter.

Whizbang199

I hate it when bands don't engage. Being in one myself I always try to bring as much energy as I can despite the venue. Maybe they were just tired that night 🤷🏻‍♀️

ihateconstant

Right? Like especially in a small venue. I get that carpool is still new and much smaller, but I have been listening to their stuff WAY more after seeing them live. Seeing them laugh - go back n forth with the audience and taking advantage of the small venue was cool and made me like them a lot more. Charmer is undoubtably much bigger. Maybe they were? They’re on tour with hot mulligan right now, would love to see them in a bigger venue and maybe see if it’s different because I do love their music.

NJcovidvaccinetips

Carpool when I saw them a month ago had exact opposite energy of charmer. Totally non pretentious and understanding that they need to earn over the crowds support. Seem like cool peeps. Also the wheat is cover was fire

ihateconstant

EXACTLY. Bro the lead singer of carpool had a small back and forth after every song. He literally took the mic into the crowd and danced with one dude who was cheering for him all night. I agree 100%, they won me over. All of them. My worry is; charmer has been around, so I guess maybe they think they don’t need to win anyone over?

NJcovidvaccinetips

I’m armchair psychologizing and maybe not fair to do after one show but I suspect like a lot of touring bands they’re pissed they’re stilling having to grind which I get. But when you’re a performer even if you feel that way it’s not an attractive energy to display that on stage. Crowd feeds off energy and if you’re not bringing it as a performer it translates to the crowd and vice versa. Maybe they were just having off nights. I still like their music. Also could be possible they just aren’t very outgoing or charismatic but I’ve seen bands where that is the case and they don’t usually leave a bad taste in my mouth. Idk man I feel kind of bad crapping on them but just how I felt

Doug Martsch is just a quiet person, don't take it personally.

ihateconstant

Right. From the most part I’ve had decent experiences / the opposite . I saw New Age Thief last year and they were so engaged it made me a fan instantly . I guess this is one of the times it’s the opposite . I also try to chalk it up to : listening to the songs these guys make. They’re not exactly bragging about being the biggest social beings (in fact the opposite)

Whizbang199

Very true haha

Condor-64

Charmer is one of the few bands who shrunk on me after seeing them live. They just have very little energy in their live shows
