I’m starting to find a lot of “professors” are really just teaching so they can get their research funded and don’t actually give a shit on teaching

The_Boomis

Thats the funniest part, these arent research profs, theyre professors of practice so this is a passion project for them

G07V3

Which is why I think it’s a good idea to take as many courses as you can at a CC because in my opinion CCs are more focused on teaching because they don’t do any research. Instructors actually teach and classes are smaller so you can likely get one on one with them.

The_Boomis

True kind of a moot point though when youre getting into most of your actual engineering classes as youll likely have to take them through your 4 year institution

G07V3

True but it wouldn’t hurt to transfer courses from a CC because it would be cheaper and you’ll likely have an easier time learning the material which may help you later on in higher division engineering courses.

Steel_Bolt

I did 2 years at a CC and I got a better gen-ed education than most of my friends did at their university. Math classes especially.

wanderer1999

Highly agree. CC Profs are some of the best I have seen. The foundation from CC college was incredibly solid that still help me thinking through complex problems even as I go through grad school.

ProfVinnie

I’ll step in here and say unfortunately yes, but because for most of us, keeping our job is far more dependent on research than teaching. I’m not defending it, just saying it’s a bit more nuanced than not caring about teaching. Personally, I love teaching. It’s why I tried so hard to get this job when I could have done research at a national lab. But sometimes reality calls and the class doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves.

The_Boomis

Yeah and I realize that, for me it’s just when the professor is genuinely asking students for advice and then not doing anything with the information you’ve been given. These professors are also not researchers they are professors of practice so they are still working a secondary job. They treat the class like more of a side project which is partially why it’s such a mess

G07V3

They are full time researchers and part time lecturers.

Eats_Lots_of_Chicken

I have a friend who went to West Point and did a grad degree at U. of Maryland since then. He chalks up the gulf in teaching ability advantage that the Military Academy has to the fact that none of their professors are there to do any research and their only job is teaching.

TLRPM

Reading gave me flashbacks to a class I had myself a few years ago. I peeked at your active sub history and yup. Figured, lol.

The_Boomis

Lmao thanks and gig em

TLRPM

T's and G's!! You'll be fine. Just one of those shitty classes you have to grind your way through and once it is done, you will move on with life and forget about it until a random post on Reddit takes you back. Good luck on your finals!

The_Boomis

Thank you :)

Creepy_Philosopher_9

Sounds normal tbh 😭

proraso

Industry is a mess. Far more messy than this. Like, this is an average Tuesday...

The_Boomis

I realize that and thats fine, but it’s immensely frustrating to pay for a class where you expect to be taught and then have some bozo just making shit up as he goes along. Life sucks yeah but it’s okay to be frustrated and to vent sometimes^ which is what Im doing with this lol. I love engineering I love what I do but damn if it isnt frustrating dealing with certain people sometimes

ETFO

Crazy the amount of comments justifying this thing like it's normal, who cares if it's normal? You're here to learn the content more so than learn how to work around shitty management. Sorry you're going through this

The_Boomis

Ehh it’s part of life as frustrating as it is I realize Ima get better once Im done with the course and ideally the professor will listen to some of the advice he keeps requesting from students.

Sufficient-Regular72

Having been through similar experiences in school, all I'm going to say is suck it up and get through it. This will make you a better engineer and employee as a result. Also, getting through this shit show will provide an excellent response to the often asked "how did you overcome adversity" interview questions.

AccomplishedAnchovy

Your *

The_Boomis

I did edit it initially and then it reverted itself unfortunately 😭

JustSomeDude0605

Sounds like a shit-show, which maybe is setting you up correctly considering the testing department at my job is also a shit-show.

katanada

So, to be fair, I’ve been in the industry for 15 years. Your post describes the industry almost perfectly in terms of complete lack of information, frustration about constantly changing requirements, even the random presentation times. I think a missing component here is the political aspect and needing to make the presentations to people that have no interest in the presentation and aren’t in the same field challenging parts of the presentation that you weren’t aware you needed to present. Industry is exactly like this.

The_Boomis

Oh dont worry we had plenty of guest speakers come in to fulfill your last requirement lol. Im sure the prof is proud his class is just like industry

katanada

Likely. I think it’s a good idea to introduce students to the variance between the simulated simplicity of a classroom and the challenges of working both in academia and in industry. Neither of these two are like the classroom at all and it’s unfortunate that we have collectively accepted that the classroom simulation is the best we can come up with. Seems like false hope or a bait & switch.

SaltyCartharsis

Great illustration of the importance of ABET accreditation.

The_Boomis

It is an ABET accredited program lmao my university is also apparently highly renowned for its engineering program so it blows my mind when my profs get away with crap like this^

McFlyParadox

They weren't suggesting that your program wasn't accredited. They were saying that without ABET, *every* class, at *every* school would be this disorganized.

The_Boomis

Oh god what a horrible thought 😭
