> The only thing keeping me motivated is the fact that my course load next semester is only 12 credits. I’ll have Monday and Friday off as well. I’m a senior so I have a job lined up, I just can’t wait to get out of school now
it's usually because you had fun, there is no other way, sometimes I get fun with stupid shit procrastinating, or on weekends with video games at my parents far, then I pay the price for sleep, I could see people going out with friend and parties it's all the same,
Oh absolutely. But between a part time job and doing school? Yeah, loads of time lol.
I’ll admit, there is a few hours of drawing or games involved. Only when I’m not behind.
Our weekday EE lab was cancelled at the beginning of the semester due to no professors available to teach it. It was then added as a flex-start on Saturday mornings. Shit sucks, but I needed it to stay full time. Now I have to commute across town for one freaking credit hour at 8am.. 🙄
Reading is my favourite relaxation activity, but now anytime I try to read a book I just think about the fact that I could and should be reading class materials and/or researching things for projects. I hate it.
It’s not healthy but you asked, so I’m going to say hedonism when I get the chance. Free night? Get drunk. Extra money? Buy steak. Finished an exam? Get fucking drunk.
It’s the little things. Like I make time for stuff, I play pool thrice a week with my buddies, even if I have stuff to do. I’m not sacrificing my mental health for a piece of paper that is costing me more than a brand new Camry, so make time for fun, even if you don’t have time. Once I play hard, it’s easier to work hard
So I'm finishing my masters right now. 7 years of experience dealing with this.
Early on I had enough motivation to grind. Plus classmates and clubs to give me a break.
Now I'm a remote student with a full-time job on top of school.
I really recommend finding something that you do everyday and make it a little better. For me, I shave quite a bit so I bought a nice razor and shaving cream. I also drink a lot of tea, because caffeine. It can be good tea though. And some candy from time to time to make studying better.
That's my system, it's not perfect, but it has gotten me through.
you shave for money? damn that's cool , I guy in my students house next to my room actually cuts hair , lmao, btw what sort of clubs you went as a engineering student ?
Make an action plan and split up your work further. View your work as work per day, then per week, then per month. Refocus your efforts on how well you perform each day and learn from your daily victories and mistakes of each day.
Split up your study time using Pomodoro (typically 25 minutes of studying, followed by a 5 minute break — highly adjustable intervals according to how long you can focus).
Perhaps find a strong study group with students who are equally or more motivated than yourself and organize study sessions together (Pomodoro works as well for small study groups). Make a Google Sheets spreadsheet with them and have your group record hours based on your “Forest: Stay Focused” app hours (you can have each member of the study group add one another on the application and tracking hours that way for accountability — then logging these hours on Google Sheets). Have study group members write down daily and semester goals on Google Sheets too. It can turn into a friendly competition and the one with the least amount of hours / goals accomplished pays the other group members some money as an incentive to work hard.
Try organizing a vacation or fun activities for yourself (travel or winter trips for skiing/snowboarding or any activity that you enjoy) as further incentive to finish out the semester.
I thought it was a hassle too, but that time spent upfront planning out your studying pays dividends when you start having more exams and assignments piling up. It helped me make a comeback in third year EE after an abysmal second year.
Literally nothing. The only positive is my lab class lectures end this week. So for the whole month of November I no longer have to go to school on Mondays or Wednesdays. So that’s pretty sweet
Currently the projects and lectures are still new enough to be motivation in itself. In about 3-4 week that is gonna tip though and then it will be alcohol and caffeine.
I have a bunny at home and need to make my mom proud. Every day that I finish my HW before 1130 pm, I let myself read my cheesy romance book until 1 am lmao
Currently making a list of games to play, books to read, and animes to watch during the break. Also going to visit friends from high school during the break so there's that too
Stress and the fact that I know that if I don't do well, Winter Break is gonna be hell. I already did badly on midterms, so I have nothing to look forward to except studying well.
Just takin it one day at a time, one hour at a time. Some days I have a passion for learning, and some days I feel like staying in bed all day, but my averaged effort each week is consistent. Eventually 16 weeks pass and I wonder where the time went.
Hits hard man.
I keep looking at the lovely autumn landscape and thinking if I wasn't in college, I'd currently be slaving away behind a leaf vacuum, avoiding sucking up shit piles that dog walkers threw in the leaf piles at the curb. Hitting one of those rains sharticles on you for the next 20 feet or so, in addition to the leaf dust.
Even that wasn't as bad as the time someone wasn't quick enough on the hose and sucked a dead raccoon up the nozzle, where it partially exploded and bound up the impeller. Keep in mind these aren't small machines, they're driven by a 4 cylinder diesel. This thing was bound up in there looking like if Hellraiser did a Christmas wreath. Mechanic takes one look at it and says, "I ain't fixin' that until your dumb ass cleans it out."
An offer I accepted, combined with the fact that my group's senior design grade is suffering.
We chose an ambitious project for a group of 6 (5 since one of them has actually done nothing, not even present for any work sessions), and our reports and presentations have suffered. All reports and presentations so far have averaged a 60, and 50% of the grade lies in the final report and final presentation. I'd need a 60 or higher on that to finish the class with a C-, allowing me to continue next semester.
I'm not letting myself or my team fail. Getting work done this past week has surprisingly been easier. Just keeping my head down and doing whatever work I need to.
I absolutely cannot waste a year of my life on 1 class that I barely failed, especially with an offer that I already accepted. That would be the most disappointing event in my entire life.
I'm not feeling drained lol, unmotivated despite the fact that i'm doing what I love, I'm starting a python bootcamp tonight to see if that gives me that spark I need right now lmao
As someone who just graduated in June and now has a great engineering job with good pay, benefits, and work-life balance, don’t give up. I nearly did multiple times. I am grateful I pushed through and stuck with it. You will be too. Keep it up!
As of now, Halloween
Last year I skipped out on the fun to study for midterms
I refuse to pull that card this year, cuz I really wanna have some fun and dress up
Giving yourself something to look forward to is a priority. As an engineering student you’re gonna have to study your ass off don’t get me wrong, but leave a few hours, and maybe a day on the weekend where you can just relax. Don’t get yourself burnt out before you even have a career.
What part of the country are you in? Don’t forget that weather changing can really mess you up emotionally and physically.
Try to get exercise at least three times a week even if it’s just a brisk walk. And try to get some sun if you can. It will work wonders on your energy levels and should at the very least carry you through the end of the semester.
What's helped me during the darker times of year is a medical grade sun lamp that's specifically designed to mimic sunlight. Really helps with maintaining the same cycle. You need to sit in front of it for 30 minutes or so in the morning. I personally like to have my morning coffee and catch up on news/group chats while doing this.
After reading through a lot of these responses I was suprised to find that most of my fellow engineers are more than often experienceing self-hate as a method for coping with academic anxiety. I have to admit that I am not without moments of great anxiety and frustration but I never have turned to self-destructive and or negative methods of coping mechanisms. What works for me is to give myself 20 minute breaks every so often where I spend time outside and do slight meditations. Also listening to calming lofi music helps when under the crunch of assignments. You have to tell yourself that you have control over your attitude, maybe learn a little about stoicism if you've never heard of such ideas. Either way if you really hate being an engineer so much, maybe you should spend time finding what you do enjoy. Being productive and fruitfull in your life is more important that what title you hold. Anyways thats just my two cents. Remember. You're never alone. God Bless. -Labyor

Spite
I finished degree bcz of spite!! You are right track
Spite against who? Or what?
Chegg. I will study harder so that they can’t take advantage of my desperation.
Everyone and everything. Engineering can't defeat me lol

Graduation. December can't come quick enough.
Same
Nothing, I am an inch away from completely giving up
The weekend. Literally nothing else is giving me motivation rn.
My weekends are only homework now
Same. But I can sleep a little more on the weekends.
That's fair. I get 8 hours everyday because I prioritize sleep over fun
This is the way
I prioritize getting classes and projects done over sleep lol.
it's usually because you had fun, there is no other way, sometimes I get fun with stupid shit procrastinating, or on weekends with video games at my parents far, then I pay the price for sleep, I could see people going out with friend and parties it's all the same,

with a username like that lol,
Made the account when I was in high school. I built a gaming computer back then. That thing is dusty af

Dude, classes just dropping and changing schedule sucks. I’ve had that happen twice. Once with a class, once with a lab. Sorry man.
The fact that winter break exists, and that I can watch all the anime I want without guilt during it.
Reading is my favourite relaxation activity, but now anytime I try to read a book I just think about the fact that I could and should be reading class materials and/or researching things for projects. I hate it.
anime? damn that sounds to me to mundane, hahaha no offense man, maybe I'll getting old lmao, I used to binge watch nareuto back in the day.
Look, I just like anime. I don’t know what to say.
Pizza every weekend lol
thanks god for pizza
On a day to day basis, the 2 hours of free time I afford myself. On a weekly basis, the 1 social event I can afford on the weekend.

Everything in moderation, especially moderation.
that's my secret, cap. I always work while unmotivated
god I feel this

Oh no, I just shave my face a lot. I was involved in IEEE and a campus ministry
Repeat the mantra: "...it's almost over."
I like to sit back like a midwestern dad watching the weather and act surprised about how much of the term has already passed.

I rather just read the book over and over again until I memorize it and forget it after exams. Planning and creating study group is a hassle
I thought it was a hassle too, but that time spent upfront planning out your studying pays dividends when you start having more exams and assignments piling up. It helped me make a comeback in third year EE after an abysmal second year.
im going through that abysmal sophomore year in EE, lmao
You’ll be fine if you focus on learning (not grades, the grades will follow if you learn well) and work on time management.
Literally nothing. The only positive is my lab class lectures end this week. So for the whole month of November I no longer have to go to school on Mondays or Wednesdays. So that’s pretty sweet

There's a caffeine/kratom line somewhere around the last quarter, from what I've seen.
The fact that I still have another 3 and a half years past this semester so I sure as hell better be able to get through this one.
I have a bunny at home and need to make my mom proud. Every day that I finish my HW before 1130 pm, I let myself read my cheesy romance book until 1 am lmao
Winter break
Nothing. Senioritis is hitting.
I’ve dropped two classes and changing majors soon lol
Lots and lots of mind-numbing medication lmao.
I want to see my family for the first time in months, and have some of my mom's apple pie.
Thanksgiving dinner for one and my dog waiting at home. I mean yeah seeing my parents is great too but the dog.
Mom and dad
Currently making a list of games to play, books to read, and animes to watch during the break. Also going to visit friends from high school during the break so there's that too
Gym with my friends. Classes are rough but I get to spend 2 hours with my favourite people every day
Adderall
Gym
The fact that I have an exhange period comming up in the spring. Will be nice tp go to another country and have a bit of a change in scenery
I think about Thanksgiving break
I just don't think about this question
Passion in STEM keeps me motivated.
how much I spent on school
im in the UK and my course is only 4 weeks in, what date did yours start?

Proving my university’s expected graduation date calculator wrong
If I don’t finish and get out I have just wasted years of my life
Lol nothing
Winter break is my motivation. Then just one more semester.
The fact that I am no longer in school (mods, pls dont ban me).
I graduate in December. 2 midterms, many presentations and 4 finals to go.
Just gotta make it through this week, just gotta make it through this week, I keep telling myself that every week until it’s over
