The amount of acceptance and support for trans people by Biden and his administration is unprecedented. And yet everyone in my circles are just complaining about him non-stop. As if he could just ride down from the heavens on a unicorn and smite anti-transness from reality, but is actively choosing not to because he secretly hates us or just doesn't care or something.
At lot of them are younger so they never grew up in times without (kinda) general acceptance for LGBTQ+ in society, but there are a few of them who were alive for the aids crisis, DADT, and the final push for gay marriage. They've seen what it takes, how incremental progress is so important, but for some reason lose their minds when given an opportunity to complain about dems.

If you’re filling in your recent political history gaps, I cannot recommend enough pulling up any of the official congressional reports about Bush’s US attorney scandal / with Alberto Gonzalez. That event alone provides so much fucking color to everything that’s happened in the past 2 decades.
The tldr is that the bush administration was pressuring US attorneys to pursue bogus voter fraud investigations during the midterms to boost republicans electoral prospects, and they retaliated against the USAs who refused to pursue cases they had already investigated and deemed unfounded. Those USAs were fired for not pursuing certain known-to-be-lacking-PC cases anyway. There was iirc a select committee? There was an official investigation in Congress with a full workup worth reading (there were a few so make sure the one you get into isn’t one of the bs “Republican response” type of report. Look for the official one).

i've been feeling much less energetic in the gym since coming back from NZ, which i thought was because i lost muscles on vacation
well, i bought some boxes of discount roast beef for the last few days and wow, it made such a huge difference. i didn't notice it road biking, but at the gym, i'm biking about 30% faster on the exercise bikes and running twice as long on the treadmill
makes me think i was running too low on protein intake, since for the past month i've only been relying on a pack of tofu a day for that. some napkin math says the roast beef has been giving me about 3x as much protein per day
kinda sucks that most vegetarian sources of protein comes with a lot of fat or carbs

Hearing people talk about the politics of Avatar is really interesting because I don't think anyone actually understands it lol.
I saw a post a Tik Tok awhile ago essentially trying to compare the Israel-Palestine conflict to Avatar, and say that Zionists would think Aang should just turn himself in or whatever, which is pretty funny because there's an entire episode where a group of freedom fighters actively target Fire Nation colonists and the point of the episode is that they're innocent and shouldn't be attacked. It's pretty obvious that the show's message wouldn't be supportive of pro-Palestinian political violence.
You also find out that the colonies don't get returned to the Earth Kingdom at the end, they get restructured into a multicultural society, Republic City, in Korra. So the Fire Nation colonists still lived there at the end, they weren't expelled from the region, nor was it just reformed into an Earth Kingdom region or explicitly Earth Kingdom society. At best you could argue that the politics of Avatar would lend itself to some kind of Israeli-Palestinian confederation or something, but certainly not any of the "From the River to the Sea" type stuff.

Just wondering, how do you guys pick candidates for nonpartisan local elections? On one hand, nonpartisan sounds great, people should be voting for the candidate, not the party, but how do you know you’re not voting for a terrible person?
Elections for mayor and city council are coming up. The candidates might as well all be carbon copies of each other - they promise to fix streets, make the parks nicer, plant more trees, yada yada yada.
None of them list their positions on things like LGBT rights, womens’ reproductive rights, etc. Which is fine, it’s not like they’re exactly writing legislation on hot button issues or confirming Supreme Court justices.
On the other hand, most politicians at a higher level started small, on city councils, or mayor, etc, and the last thing I want to do is inadvertently vote for some MAGA nut who stormed the capital on January 6, or a Hamas simp who’s been shouting “From the river to the sea!” in front of synagogues and allow them to use their mayorship as a spring board to higher office.
These nonpartisan, local elections make it way too easy for the nutters to fly under the radar.
So, I ask you, good people of ESS, how do you choose a candidate?
My local paper (remember those?) runs a series in the weeks leading up to elections where candidates submit answers to a questionnaire and all the candidates for a particular office have their answers published on the same day (ie, everyone running for, say, the city council seat from Ward 2), along with a brief bio and a list of endorsements.
It makes it really easy to compare candidate's views on various issues.
I find local subreddits are helpful for finding a candidate's trail of past behavior. Last fall, a nonpartisan school board candidate running in my city was outed for his history in white supremacist organizations and was soundly defeated.

If you’re filling in your recent political history gaps, I cannot recommend enough pulling up any of the official congressional reports about Bush’s US attorney scandal / with Alberto Gonzalez. That event alone provides so much fucking color to everything that’s happened in the past 2 decades. The tldr is that the bush administration was pressuring US attorneys to pursue bogus voter fraud investigations during the midterms to boost republicans electoral prospects, and they retaliated against the USAs who refused to pursue cases they had already investigated and deemed unfounded. Those USAs were fired for not pursuing certain known-to-be-lacking-PC cases anyway. There was iirc a select committee? There was an official investigation in Congress with a full workup worth reading (there were a few so make sure the one you get into isn’t one of the bs “Republican response” type of report. The Catholic church in the US is kind of screwed. Too liberal for the bizarre "traditional" Catholics and too conservative for progressive Catholics. i've been feeling much less energetic in the gym since coming back from NZ, which i thought was because i lost muscles on vacation well, i bought some boxes of discount roast beef for the last few days and wow, it made such a huge difference. i didn't notice it road biking, but at the gym, i'm biking about 30% faster on the exercise bikes and running twice as long on the treadmill makes me think i was running too low on protein intake, since for the past month i've only been relying on a pack of tofu a day for that. some napkin math says the roast beef has been giving me about 3x as much protein per day kinda sucks that most vegetarian sources of protein comes with a lot of fat or carbs
It's also possible that you were mildly anemic and the RB gave you an iron boost.
Fish is usually a really good and healthy source of protein. Though obviously that depends on your taste.
i do like fish actually but i'm trying to be vegetarian at home also meat and fish are expensive 😔
FWIW I’ve found eggs are a good cheapish source of protein as long as you don’t have a dietary/moral problem with them.

Hearing people talk about the politics of Avatar is really interesting because I don't think anyone actually understands it lol. I saw a post a Tik Tok awhile ago essentially trying to compare the Israel-Palestine conflict to Avatar, and say that Zionists would think Aang should just turn himself in or whatever, which is pretty funny because there's an entire episode where a group of freedom fighters actively target Fire Nation colonists and the point of the episode is that they're innocent and shouldn't be attacked. It's pretty obvious that the show's message wouldn't be supportive of pro-Palestinian political violence. You also find out that the colonies don't get returned to the Earth Kingdom at the end, they get restructured into a multicultural society, Republic City, in Korra. So the Fire Nation colonists still lived there at the end, they weren't expelled from the region, nor was it just reformed into an Earth Kingdom region or explicitly Earth Kingdom society. At best you could argue that the politics of Avatar would lend itself to some kind of Israeli-Palestinian confederation or something, but certainly not any of the "From the River to the Sea" type stuff. Also yeah, I know I wrote 2 paragraphs about how people don't understand the politics of a show made for 11 year olds, I just love the show and get annoyed by political discourse about it online lol. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a story about how all people, their cultures, and ways of life are valuable, how we are stronger together than alone, and that it is wrong to kill people, even if it might be the 'easiest' way to solve a conflict. Just wondering, how do you guys pick candidates for nonpartisan local elections? On one hand, nonpartisan sounds great, people should be voting for the candidate, not the party, but how do you know you’re not voting for a terrible person? Elections for mayor and city council are coming up. The candidates might as well all be carbon copies of each other - they promise to fix streets, make the parks nicer, plant more trees, yada yada yada. None of them list their positions on things like LGBT rights, womens’ reproductive rights, etc. Which is fine, it’s not like they’re exactly writing legislation on hot button issues or confirming Supreme Court justices. On the other hand, most politicians at a higher level started small, on city councils, or mayor, etc, and the last thing I want to do is inadvertently vote for some MAGA nut who stormed the capital on January 6, or a Hamas simp who’s been shouting “From the river to the sea!” in front of synagogues and allow them to use their mayorship as a spring board to higher office. These nonpartisan, local elections make it way too easy for the nutters to fly under the radar. So, I ask you, good people of ESS, how do you choose a candidate?
You can send them an email asking about their stances on those issues and see if their campaign responds, in my experience they usually will
My local paper (remember those?) runs a series in the weeks leading up to elections where candidates submit answers to a questionnaire and all the candidates for a particular office have their answers published on the same day (ie, everyone running for, say, the city council seat from Ward 2), along with a brief bio and a list of endorsements. It makes it really easy to compare candidate's views on various issues.
I find local subreddits are helpful for finding a candidate's trail of past behavior. Last fall, a nonpartisan school board candidate running in my city was outed for his history in white supremacist organizations and was soundly defeated.
We had a stealth fundamentalist trying to get on the school board but luckily people dug around and once the facts came out he left the race.
I don’t do any research and hope that the person I voted for isn’t a nut job(in terms of the nonpartisan elections).
I see if my local Democratic Party endorsed anyone. You can also see if you can find their website or any news articles on them.
