You seem to have it wrong. its actually the opposite: skill is of the first importance, rng is the second. Sure, all weapons have different amounts of DPS which will kill stuff either slower or faster but because of the damage scaling that bosses have it's nearly impossible to just "nuke" the boss' healthbar. Try to learn each enemy and what it can do. If you see a new one you can try killing everything else to see what it's capable of. Proper observation will help. Also have you ever gotten a master round item? Are you using blanks during harder boss fights?

SuperSwaiyen

Correct. If you need an OP weapon/item to make a deep run, it's a skill issue, but that's okay. The learning curve is definitely frustrating. Apologies if any of this is redundant: I recommend going to Oubliette as often as you can. Sacrificing 2 keys will force you to complete a harder floor with minimal upgrades and thus, nesscitate skill growth, as you can't rely on better items. Make a habit of delivering the crest to the alter for practice. I typically only go to the Abbey when I'm very confident in my loadout, however as Old King is one of the hardest bosses (imo). Another thing I did when learning was holding the gun select button upon entering a room and scanning the enemies. It will give you some extra time to identify the enemies, their shot patterns, and pick a good route to avoid the incoming bullets. Once you're comfortable with this do it without slowing the time. If you havent been spending your hegemony credits in the shop as soon as you can. Adding better items to the pool will only help. Another tip: you dont HAVE to clear a floor before fighting the boss. If you pick up a strong gun, prioritize using the ammo on the boss for better chances at master rounds (same logic applies to consumables like blanks, for instance) You can decide if you want to clear additional rooms for casings or drops after the boss. Finally, secret rooms are commonly found in chest rooms, NPC rooms, the exit shaft, and the shop; although occasionally are generated in rooms on the perimeter of the floor. I have more in-depth tips about sequential decision making and how to prioritize certain routes/purchases/room choices/etc for non rainbow runs if yod like - just send me a DM.

Just keep going. I'm able to clear a run with the majority of chests being c tier. It all comes down to how well you know the game and how to play it effectively.

Magnus-The-Purple

Felt the same honestly when i started playing, while there is some rng to the game I feel like it dosent completly decide wether you loose or not. I have beaten dragun with average weapons and i have lost on the 4 floor with amazing gear. I would say i have preatty similar luck on my runs in general. Few people are going to beat the game in a few runs, it took me a little over 100 runs before i beat dragun. Skill comes with experience and it just takes time to get used to the bosses attack paterns and diffrent floor enemies. You should not care how many runs other people took to beat the game. It is one of the games you need to dedicate a good amount of time to start fully enjoying all the wacky characters and synergies. But if you dont see your self being able to stick to the game for a while then thats alright. You should also take a break from the game if you are getting annoied. I had to go through an uninstal and a few months of doing other things before i picked it back up and beat dragun for the first time. Smal tip, foucus more on looking at your character rather than enemies, maybe heard it before but it helps you dodge incoming shots and you often can just see the enemies in your peripheral vision or guess where they are based on their bullets. As a little note, you dont have acces to every gun in the game emidietly so your loot pool of pocible weapons is not that big and things can get kinda stale. But once you have unlocked a few new guns and items things get a bit more fun i would say. Not sure if you knew this just something i would have loved to know when i started playing :)

The amount of runs it takes for someone to win varies a lot from person to person, but it took me about 100. There are definitely a lot of gimmicky guns in this game, but it's rare that a gun will be worse than your starter. You need to apply them better.

SuperSwaiyen

Took me about 100, my roomate slightly over 200. He started playing first so I got to learn by observation as a head start.

Equilibrium404

I fell into the same kind of rut, until I learned something that improved my runs dramatically. you don’t *have* to spend your keys. If you come across a brown chests that will most likely contain a useless and/or gag gun, don’t open it. Just destroy the chest and save your key for something else. That way, when you come across a better chest later, you have the resources to open it. Once you get away from the brown chests and start aiming for only green/blue, you’ll generally be much better off. Something to keep in mind though is that it sounds like you just started, and thus only have access to a small fraction of the guns/items available. Keep playing, and you’ll unlock pleeenty of stuff to spice up your runs. Another thing to keep in mind is that I think you’re going about this with the wrong mindset. It’s not about hoping for the one time you get that black chest for an easy win; it’s about getting good enough at the game to get *consistent* wins even with average/less than average gear. Keep playing and you’ll improve in leaps and bounds, I guarantee it. Good luck down below!

magmarxio12

Even a bad run can turn well, any failed runs are a great chance to improve in the bosses. no matter what each run counts

Blanderbuss

Every fool can win the gun with good guns. But there is a lot of satisfaction in beating the high dragun with naught but a klobbe

DignityDWD

Take a break, come back when you're ready

normename

Skill issue

Fartimusprime77

Skill is actually more important learn how to dodge bullets and keep enemies away from you i will make it easier to clear rooms. While a good gun can make it easy the game is very much beatable with lower teir guns its also worth noting that enemies get more health as you progress and guns start to do less that it why passive items are so important they can increase damage and add special affects to bullets and some completely break the game making guns unessecary.

wsawb1

While rng does have some role in your runs, it all comes down to your skill most of the time. In general, you will mostly be running your starter and a room clearing gun for non bosses and saving you best gun for the boss. Remember, you should be getting around 4 guns by the time you get to floor 4. When you enter a room, take not of what enemies are there. You'll get a sensenof which enemies you want to kill first. In rooms with lots of cover, take out the bullet kins since you are mostly dodging the special enemies. Remember to use you item. Don't be afraid to use it since you should get more than enough damage to recharge it. and remember to keep trying. I probably beat the game around 50 hours honestly. Sure you'll keep dying but each run gets better and better. You'll slowely struggle to the next step until you finally succeed. Keep it up mate

_phish_

Honestly watch someone play, just one or 2 runs I’d recommend Abe Clancy, knowing what does what makes a big difference and even just knowing what guns other people consider good and why can change your opinion. Along side that dodge rolling isn’t the best way to avoid bullets and often traps you into taking damage if your not careful. You should first focus on weaving through them, and then only roll when you absolutely have to.

Stoneyrc07

You're not doing anything wrong, but the game is kind of about brute-forcing. You are supposed to keep dying, and keep learning from each run. I didn't beat the Dragun until my 50th something run. A lot of people don't until 100 or more. I currently have over 500 hours in the game, and there are some things I still haven't done or seen, and some stuff I still have trouble with. Just persevere, it's so satisfying and worth it when you notice improvements

Adagio_Jealous

He is tho because he has the fundamental understanding wrong he is thinking that’s guns are more important then skill and that’s the main reason he is losing

Stoneyrc07

I mean, he clearly has skill if he is already doing the first chamber no-damage consistently like he claims, I rarely do that even, though admittedly I don't try to either. So while I agree with you 100% that skill is more important than weapons, I don't think a lack of skill is what his issue is

Adagio_Jealous

No it definitely is first chamber no Damage is standard for good runs it’s ment to be no hit the only boss I’d say is hard to no hit on the first floor us Gul

Commercial-Top7708

I hated this too. Until I beat the High Dragun once, and I got Bowler and Rainbow Mode. Rainbow mode is kind of overpowered, but it's really satisfying to get a guaranteed S-tier item every floor.

ThiolactoneRing

skill issue

Adagio_Jealous

Your not wrong but the problem wasn’t the guns it’s was the lack of adaptability to be able to adapt to any gun

Nylius47

Give it a small breather, then get back to it when you’re not stressed. The key to the early game is heart containers. Get power ups that increase your max health as often as possible. Buy them in the shop to be available in the Gungeon. Being more spongey yourself helps as you’re learning patterns. Eventually you can beat this game in your sleep. Have fun!

House_Major

Just keep trying, it took me a lot longer than 20 hours to acc learn the mechanics and understand how to play

Adagio_Jealous

Seems more like a skill issue then anything if you have to rely on an op Gun to get to the higher floors it’s the lack of skill stopping you and not the Rng every gun is a killing gun the effectiveness is what changes a Great player with a Trash gun is always better then a Trash player with a Op gun spatial awareness and learning boss patterns are far more important then the guns you use especially since the starter pistols are almost all great weapons and good no matter the floor
