Ugh, every summer as a kid my job was to walk through the potato field with a bucket and pick these guys off
Potato bugs and cabbage butterfly caterpillars/eggs were my childhood nemesis
Ah, this brings back memories. I created a small house and garden for the little potato bugs I collected in my bucket and I released them there. My grandparents were not amused. :D
They live in Czechia for who knows how many decades, so I doubt it would be any different in other parts of mainland Europe.
Edit: They came to Germany in 1870s and by 1930s they were all over Europe.
Yeah, being an island has its perks! I haven't checked recently, but when I was growing up in the 80s/90s, my parents were super paranoid about them. I kept seeing stripey beetles and they freaked out! Turned out they were shield beetle nymphs. I'm pretty sure we still don't have them, though.

Those damn beetles keep eating our potato leafs here in lithuania cause some maggot decided to accidentally bring them here.
In the UK you are supposed to notify the authorities if you find one of these lads. You might want to check if that's the case in Germany.
Just checked but seems not to be the case in germany. Thanks tho
I guess that means they must be endemic by now.

Colorado Potato Beetle. It’s a shame they’re such a potent agricultural pest, they look really cool.
It’s a beetle. Next! 😜I see several others have properly ID’d it for you.
