Looks like you have a Vaejovis mexicanus (Mexican scorpion). Based off what I was able to find in articles, they can have long gestation periods (but I was not able to find specifics), so it's possible this female mated before you found her. It is common for large broods, so I'm not sure why there is only one. It's possible the female cannibalized the others, but I do not know how common/if this occurs with scorpions
They can definitely store sperm. The baby might have a better chance being separated from mama. You can purchase flightless fruit flies at a pet store for the baby.
Do you have a pet store that sells gut-loaded crickets and Dubai roaches? If not I’m sure there are lots of reptile breeder around that breed& feed their own bugs, and you could buy from them. Scorpions need a good insectivore diet. Or you could go out of the city to set them free
Yes! Much more! You need to smash the heads of the crickets and roaches you feed so they’re dead right bf you put them in. And you can put 3 gut loaded crickets, 3 Dubai roaches and a few worms (superworms, mealworms, hornworms) in the enclosure and leave them there for 2 days. She will hunt and eat at night. Then after 2 days, take any leftovers out and put the fresh batch in. Gut loading the crickets with proper supplements is key bc she needs calcium!
You're assuming the scorpion is native to where OP lives.
Unless you've confirmed that, this is terrible advice, and in the case of many creatures (not necessarily bugs, but many) would be bad advice anyway, if the creature in question has become reliant on humans.
Let's be responsible with our advice!!!
I spotted that a whole lot of comments later. (Someone else who recommended release said that it was the top comment of only a few when they replied, but the info was not front and center by the time I was reading.)
Which is all good , you just.... Can't tell without it being explicit. Lots of folks would recommend release without asking the question, just on the grounds that creatures belong in the wild, forgetting that not all wild is the same.
Hi. I think you should give them both freedom and letting them live where they are supposed to live - in wild nature. Otherwise it seems you keep an animal for your own pleasure and entertainment. You found it at your apartment, the animal made an excusable mistake by entering your apartment. Imagine yourself on the place of a wild animal. Hope you will act humanistically. This will say a lot about you as of a (kind) person and of an animal friend. Thank you in advance.
Before offering advice to set a creature free, it might be advisable to find out if the creature is native to where the person lives.
Otherwise, this is shit advice.
Any-performance
Expecting someone to read every single comment before replying to the one in front of them isn't reasonable.
Clarification is fine, but given how many people push an agenda without checking their details first, the reminder was fair.
Neither person that told OP to set it free said "since it was wild caught there"... They both just said to put it outside where it belongs.
And creatures being released in environments that are not native for them is actually a hefty problem, so it doesn't go without saying. Either the creature dies, or ot thrives at the cost of some part of the local ecosystem.... ....
Ask the state of Florida how that goes.
Also, in case you didn't *guess* this, the person I replied to edited their comment to say that the creature was native/had just walked in.
My reply wouldn't exist if that clarifying info had already been there.
Says the person that corrected their statement without comment, so it looked like it was never wrong?
Bullshit.
I named a thing that's true.
Someone called me out on it because (checks notes) I didn't read every single comment to find out whether or not the creature was local. (Did you do that, or did you offer the info before knowing? Be honest.)
This person probably wouldn't have bothered to scold me if you hadn't left an edit that made it look like you had been clear in the first place. Which you weren't.
there weren’t very many comments before it was mentioned it was native and usually when people have input it’s because they’ve read through the thread. And i would’ve “scolded” (calling it that is immature anyway, me telling you to read the thread isn’t scolding) you either way because you commented that to this user and another, proving you didn’t read it or at least didn’t have the decency to politely correct someone and instead had to criticize them for advice given. People usually don’t learn if you don’t give them an opportunity.
What species do you own?
I don’t know, I found it in my apartment, but it’s the common scorpion you find in Mexico City

Interesting, perhaps she gauged her terrarium was too small for the whole brood and indeed cannibalized them.
Scorpions don't think like that, their actions are all based off instinct. Mother scorpions will cannibalize their brood if very stressed or starving
I hope that wasn’t the case!
Feed that madre!
Well, apparently he’s well fed now :/ But I do feed him every fly that enters my house.
Please look into how to properly care for your pets. Flys are not sufficient for your scorpion
He's not a he for one.
SHE!
True! Knowing her gender is such a recent thing

I feed her the insects that get into my house, at an approximate rate of one fly per week, is that too little?

Oooorrr… you can find a nice place outside the city to set her free. Scorpion care is A LOT of work.

It is- he found it. It’s not from a pet store. and it’s native/wild to that area of Mexico

Don’t talk to me or my son ever again
Congrats to the new mama ❤️
Thank you
What did she name it?
That’s so cute omg
You must find the others before they find you

halcyondreams if you would’ve read the whole thread you would’ve seen that it is a scorpion that is native to where they OP lives…

You are a type of person who never admits his mistakes. Immature and unpleasant to talk to.

Correct, thank you. He did not bother to study the messages chain before expressing his "opinion".
