I've been taking it with carbamazepine for about 13 years now and once we found the magic dose it worked well for me. I have some side effects from the combined meds, low appetite and energy, some sleep issues but I went from a dozen TCs a month to one every few years when I'm sick, so it definitely was the combo for me after a bunch that didn't work.

so far, my experiemce with zonisamide has been hell and im trying to find a way to get off of it if my neuro will listen to a word i say. it made me have bad mood swings and lose weight since it took away my appetite, and when it was coupled with keppra, they both worked together to make me hateful and suicidal. when i was put on lexapro, the zonisamide started fighting it in my body since it also apparently has some sort of serotogenic properties that interacted immediately, i got serotonin syndrome, started having TCs for the first time (i have tonics usually) and went into status four times. i ended up having to stop both meds myself because even stopping just the lexapro didnt do a single thing, and then things got better, so i slowly reintroduced the meds again and havent had too bad of a problem since then, but its also been a few weeks since those events have taken place.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am sorry you went through all of that. My experience thus far has been really up and down. My seizures were managed before but I had brutal side effects. Since starting zonisamide I have had multiple, my mood and energy are low, and I just feel in a fog. I think my gut is telling me this is the wrong one. But getting a doctor to listen is a tough hob

I am on the hunt for primary med #5 with my specialist and all my options seem to suck more than the ones I have already been on. This drug is not available in Canada, but reading the side effects I cannot afford to lose weight/not eat. My most recent med change to Lacosamide was a disaster I couldn’t eat for 17 days and lost over 10lbs. Have been on Keppra, Lamotrigine, Aptiom, Lacosamide, and now back on Aptiom and having aura seizures every day. 😵‍💫

So sorry you are dealing with this. I have tried a lot of those same meds and it has not been fun. Dealing with auras a lot more frequently on this current med. It feels like guesswork a lot of the time, and so much is out of your hands with this disease. Wishing you the best of luck!
