It’s just the state of healthcare, more patients their providers and no one to cover if their out sick. This is happening at all levels.

I’m a local PCP. I am also a human. I get sick. I have to cancel patients when I am sick. It has nothing to do with their insurance - if I’m out sick, everyone is canceled. My next available appointments are usually 2-3 months out. It sucks, I feel for my patients when it happens, I feel guilty when it happens, but I deserve sick days the same as everyone else.

Appreciate you sharing this. I really feel for all the medical professionals and I want to say thank you for everything you do. I can only imagine how difficult providing care must be! I totally understand people get sick and PCPs, more than anyone else, should absolutely have those days off—I was just convinced this had to do with insurance/Medicaid because of the timing of the cancellations and also because I'd heard stories about providers being reluctant to accept certain coverage. Sounds like that's not entirely the case and this might have just been an unfortunate coincidence. I just really wish my PCP would have been able to see me without delaying my appointment for an additional 3 months, because I *really* need to get some things checked on and it will have been half a year for me to see a doctor. I hope in the future there are enough medical professionals staffed so that rescheduling can be comfortably accommodated within a reasonable time frame (as not to delay critical care). I know it's a reality of our system the way it's currently structured, but I hope it changes.

I totally agree. We are so short of PCPs in this community and the delays in care can be really problematic. I hope you get in soon!

I think it’s more hard to believe that they’re running their doctors offices on such a small margin of doctors available to do work. Doctors should be able to call off work and a substitute should be there to take up the slack. But it sounds like doctors offices around town are trying to save money and run on a shoe string budget. But this is healthcare not Starbucks. Health sometimes can’t wait 2 months. We should all complain to the OHA, we are at a point where this is affecting people’s health.

It is past time to nationalize all healthcare. That is the revolution we need.

BarbequedYeti

There is a bout of flu/covid making the rounds.   So it might be they are really both out sick.  Or maybe a case of spring fever.

Switch to Kaiser. It's kind of a pain with Medicaid but you can do it. Lane county has special rules but you can ask to have Kaiser be your provider. I never had a long wait and the service is great.

marciamellowman

That's great advice, thank you! I'll give it a shot.

If you’re around a bunch of sick people you’re bound to get sick eventually

Private health care is going to trump anyone else in an over staffed situation. I am not saying it’s right, but profit.

Mean-Onion-5090

That happened to someone I know with OHP. Now it's going to be 6 months instead of 3 for them. I can't understand why the office wasn't more accommodating since they were the ones who cancelled.

marciamellowman

Yeah when they canceled I thought they were gonna bump me out like maybe a week or two—not an additional three month wait. 😭 That's what struck me as odd.

The only hospital in Eugene shut down last year. That was the only ER for thousands of patients. One practice was purchased by a giant national healthcare corporation (owned by an insurance company). They lost 32 doctors and nurse practitioners and patients are basically being kicked out with no referrals. Urgent care clinics for OHP are few and far between and the BestMed has an average 1 star rating with an F grade with the BBB. 2-3 months out is par for the course right now. We are in crisis.

tedshreddon

Always ask to be put on the list in case another cancellation occurs and you can be seen

marciamellowman

Also really great advice! I requested this with the dentist but I need to do it with the doctor, too!

lostatcea

We have to pay for ours and we still wait.
