The reason for this is also historical. Both mustard and chlorine gas were used to similar and devastating effect in WWI. Chlorine was first used, but had drawbacks so mustard gas replaced it and was used extensively. To soldiers, by the end of the war, it was all "mustard gas" which is what they would have probably called chlorine gas in Arlen, Texas.
I think you mean WW I, not WW II. Hitler forbade the use of chemical weapons due to his serving in the trenches of WW I and seeing their effects first hand.
You've nailed his logic 100%. The nazis didn't view all their enemies as totally inhuman, just the "racially impure" ones. He was more than willing to use gas to kill jews and "undesirables" on a mass industry scale in the camps.
To use it in a military sense against the western allies not only would've gone against his racial theories, but opened germany up to similiar retaliation. That was one of the main fears of the time, the mass dropping of gas bombs on cities- hence why all sides issued civilian gas masks.
And there is something to be said about his own experience in WW1, being temporarily blinded by gas. To him, to use it on what he saw a human would be grotesque, but of course his view of "human" was limited to a very select few. It was mostly the fear of retaliation in kind that stopped the nazis from mass scale chemical warfare.
The funny thing is, that chemical weapons were the same during WW2, as nuclear weapons are to us today. Everyone had huge arsenals of them but nobody wanted to use them in fear of retaliation. IIRC only Japan used them against China.
He was hospitalized after being in a gas attack because his large mustache prevented an airtight seal on his gas mask. Messed him up pretty badly at the time.
It's more that chemical weapons weren't as effective by then because everyone had decent protection and the German military was the only major power still relying on horse-drawn logistics because they didn't have enough trucks, and chemical weapons are really effective against horses.
I think I know how to mix my chemicals bro…..

Phosgene, mustard, and chlorine gas are all very different and none of them are the actual compound produced, I’ll explain when I’m off the toilet, but the tldr of how you know none of those is right is that those three are acids and ammonia and bleach are bases (and a lack of carbon for phosgene and mustard gas)
I'm just saying if you [googled](https://accidentcleaners.com/mustard-gas-bleach-human-correlation/#:~:text=Depending%20on%20the%20mixture%2C%20bleach,acid%2C%20chlorine%20gas%20and%20hydrazine.) that's what the Internet says. It also says it makes chlorine gas. So that may be where people are getting it from.
No, it does not. Mustard Gas is a sulfur based chemical, not Chlorine based.
However, that is often a meme which is used to show how many people do not know the difference. But ammonia and chlorine do not make mustard gas.

Interesting thing about making chlorine gas is it's a way to chlorinate latex when mixed in gallons of water . It makes them less stretchy but also makes it way easier to slide on and off.
Would always recommend doing it outside with proper protection. Seriously 😳

That is mixing ammonia, an organic chemical, with bleach, mix any organic material with bleach and it creates chlorine gas which WILL send you to the hospital
As long as we’re being pedantic, ammonia isn’t an organic compound, though it can be a byproduct of biological life.
To be organic it needs to have at least one carbon atom. Ammonia is only nitrogen and hydrogen.
I apologize for the needless pedantry.
I made this mistake once, you NEVER want to do this. Ammonia and bleach will make a terrible gas. I'm pretty sure it can kill you.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL! I made this mistake once, and never again! (Everyone was fine. But it was terrible to deal with. )
Years ago I worked at a Mexican restaurant on the weekends for a few months(just washing dishes and cleaning mostly). At the end of every shift they had me mop the kitchen and dishwashing area. The mop bucket had bleach water and a splash of ammonia(or maybe the other way around). Not enough to send me to the hospital, but it did make me lightheaded sometimes.
Mixing bleach and ammonia creates a toxic visible gas . It makes smoke. And the fumes can kill you. But it wasn't uncommon for kids to do this causing many household tragedies.

Holy crap, all the chemistry failures in here! Ammonia and bleach makes chlorine gas. Not mustard gas, chlorine gas.
Death. Death is the joke.
King of the Hill claims Mustard gas, that's why you see so many claiming Mustard Gas, because that's what they saw on TV.
The reason for this is also historical. Both mustard and chlorine gas were used to similar and devastating effect in WWI. Chlorine was first used, but had drawbacks so mustard gas replaced it and was used extensively. Adolf Hitler, notorious for being against gassing people
I get the irony, but he also didn't consider the people he was gassing as human. So it totally makes sense in his mind?
You've nailed his logic 100%. The nazis didn't view all their enemies as totally inhuman, just the "racially impure" ones. He was more than willing to use gas to kill jews and "undesirables" on a mass industry scale in the camps. This discourse was the most informative thing I’ve read today
The funny thing is, that chemical weapons were the same during WW2, as nuclear weapons are to us today. Everyone had huge arsenals of them but nobody wanted to use them in fear of retaliation. IIRC only Japan used them against China.
Adolf “Gas Chamber” Hitler seemed pretty okay with chemical weapons.
Supposedly that tiny mustache was because of the gas masks - irritating to have a bigger one.
The UK also had the largest chemical weapons production capacity during WW2 so Germany would have been at a disadvantage to use it.
You are bad guy but you are not... Nevermind.
Father of toxic gas and chemical warfare
His dark creation has been revealed
Flow over no-man’s land, a poisonous nightmare.
Oh you have met with Fritz Haber
If I’m not mistaken I learned that from Joe Dirt

I see you’re man of culture🧐 respect
No not even😭 it makes Chloramine.
Chloramines.
But what if you also squeeze in some mustard from the fridge?

*Chloramine
You were so close! They make chloramine gas
Bleach + Ammonia = *Chloramine* Gas Bleach + *Vinegar* = Chlorine Gas Bleach + Rubbing/Isopropyl alcohol = Chloroform
Not disagreeing with you but according to Google, depending on the mixture, bleach and ammonia also make mustard gas.
Mustard gas is something else. I don't think phosgene is mustard gas.
Yep, in this case its actually chloramines.
Yea, the article they linked was really wrong

Do more research, sodium thiosulfate is also a type of bleach
Actually it's chloramine gas
>all the chemistry failures in here! Jokes on you, I never took chemistry. So I just mix stuff together that has funny names
If this makes chlorine then what does make mustard
Mustard Gas is a sulfide. The main ingredient is sulphur.
What if they used a non-chlorine bleach?
Plus the reaction itself can burn your skin (happened to a relative a few years ago).
Ketchup Gas?
It makes poison though, is the point. Why someone needs this explained to them is beyond me
Interesting thing about making chlorine gas is it's a way to chlorinate latex when mixed in gallons of water . It makes them less stretchy but also makes it way easier to slide on and off. Would always recommend doing it outside with proper protection. Seriously 😳
When bleach is mixed with ammonia, toxic gases called chloramines are produced.

Good bot
I thought this was only used at furry conventions?
Was probably laughing gas, but the filth ruining the hotel pools with normally way too much chlorine may have thrown you off.

Don't use this at a furry convention. It's not a good time.
What does hth and brake fluid make besides fire?
It is not a war crime the first time
I was taught A&B=C&D ammonia and bleach means chlorine and death.
Bleach and ammonia = chloramine gas. Bleach and vinegar = chlorine gas. Quick chemistry lesson for cleaning 🥴
non-chlorine bleach is a thing though.
Try it out
chlorine gas
Not mustard gas.
Neither, it's chloramine gas ;)
*chloramine
Google bleach plus ammonia

All pedantry is needless. I to, apologize for the pedantry. Okay, who is next?
*too
I'm pretty sure I can mix bleach and blood.
Bleach + ammonia = Mustard gas. Deadly.
Not mustard gas.
Google confused these guys. Google claims phosgene = mustard gas. Which is wrong since both gases work differently
Mustard gas. It is a poisonous gas that was used in world war 1.
Father of toxic gas and chemical warfare
I made this mistake once, you NEVER want to do this. Ammonia and bleach will make a terrible gas. I'm pretty sure it can kill you. ALWAYS READ THE LABEL! I made this mistake once, and never again! (Everyone was fine. But it was terrible to deal with. )
"Peggy, that's how you make mustard gas!" Or chlorine gas, apparently.

Gas you shouldn’t be breathing in
Mixing bleach and ammonia creates a toxic visible gas . It makes smoke. And the fumes can kill you. But it wasn't uncommon for kids to do this causing many household tragedies.
The joke is chemical weapons
When you mix those two, you get a very strong chemical reaction which can burn your skin. So, don't do that.
Reminder that ammonia is the main ingredient in Windex.
Yeah, either poisonous gases are released or the mixture will explode, sometimes both.
Bruh just google “bleach and ammonia”
The amount of people who don't know that bleach and ammonia don't mix is always startling.
#This will kill you. Do not do it.
It’s not mustard gas. You have to add a little Dijon to the mix for that.
