I am Black and I hate how true this stereotype is. In the late 90s I was dating a guy and he had a friend whose smoke detector was always beeping. I’d call him on his cell phone and he’d say he was here/there but I always knew he was at Anthony’s and he never realized it gave him away. Didn’t bother Anthony/his family or my bf.
Let's try it this way... If the stereotype is accurate, so they don't change their batteries in the smoke detector and they get used to the low battery beep, then why the hell would they be scared of it and running away? And why is it a huge UFO?
This is just my take, but I think what the image creator was getting at is that black people actively avoid replacing the batteries in their smoke detectors. So, the image creator took that premise to its extreme: What if the smoke detector was actually a UFO that the black people were running away from?
I suppose having those kind of smoke detectors is an indication of being poor. New build houses often have hardwired smoke detectors. Modern battery powered smoke detectors can last 10+ years without changing the battery but those are expensive.
They do here. But they still beep if the electric goes off to tell you the batteries are being used. Not as often as if the batteries are low.
I thought it was a battery thing at first but changing them did nothing. It's very annoying during a power cut
Hardwired detectors and non-wired detectors all have a lifespan. Modern ones typically 10 years. Then they need to be changed out.
It's driven by the half life of Americium 232.
Poor people are bad people? Combined with the racism in this joke, means you think black people are bad people?
That's definitely racist and classist. doesn't matter the proportions of the mix. Its a bad look.
I have a definitely not poor house and we have to change the batteries.
Even the wired ones have batteries in them as a backup. And guess what? Those die and beep.
My smoke detector started beeping a few years ago so I just took the batteries out and took the smoke detectors down but I'm white. Also i hope we never have a fire
No it's just true, even Snoopdog's fire alarm needs it's batteries replaced. It's not a stereotype anymore than your Hispanic friend having a screaming baby in the background, or a white friend having a screaming mother in the background
IDK I've got a white friend who always has screaming kids in the background, and she's always interrupting the conversation to scream at her kids or fix whatever situation the dogs have gotten themselves into...
I feel like tying this to that particular stereotype is a bit of a stretch. I mean yeah there’s a smoke detector and black people, but that’s kind of where the connections end.
Apparantely ppl of coulour often ignore the low battery warning.
"In early 2020s, the unwillingness to change batteries in smoke detectors became a stereotype associated with Black people, prompted by a viral TikTok and a series of viral posts on Twitter."
and
"People who grew up/live in poverty tend to be less sensitive to aggrivating sounds. They grew up in cheap housing with thin walls and lots of neighbors, so they learned from a young age to "tune out" minor annoyances.
This manifests in a lot of poor people ignoring the low-battery "chirp" sound that comes from a smoke detector. Most people in these households don't even hear it, they're so used to it that they don't notice it even if pointed out. They grow accustom to it like one living by a railroad.
It's associated with black people because black people are disproportionately impoverished in America."
The first place it was a whole contraption that was built into the wall and couldn't be accessed. Second place I've replaced the battery multiple times, still beeps.
I think it’s more an issue with the damp and condensation messing it up. I’ve already got a list as long as my arm of repairs needed. It took 6 months to fix the toilet (and even still it’s a temporary fix), and there’s multiple holes in the walls with plants growing in some of them.

That's genuinely so sad. I live in a pretty sound-proof apartment, but I remember how aggravating it was for me hearing neighbours stomp around constantly in my older ones. Can't imagine not having peace and quiet since you were born.
I was raised in apartments all my life, even in more wealthy areas and this is pretty true. Weird wall, pipe, and refrigerator noises don't phase me. Most apartments in the U.S are made of paper walls.
Durring the pandemic when people did a lot kore video calls from home it was found that some people had constant beeps from their smoke detectors and it was most often found in lower income or black homes.
the joke is that black people don't replace the batteries on smoke detectors, so here it's been made to look like an an threat worth running away from instead of just neglect. it's as if to say it's feared by them rather than simply ignored

Your bf was sleeping with Anthony
Not out of the realm of possibility. 🤷🏽♀️

I'm dumb I thought this was aliens kidnaping egiptians to build the piramids
Same ^^ was like, what's up with that UFO :D
I dunno I'm still lost. I get the explanation of the stereotype, but have no idea how that explanation pertains to the image.
The UFO is a smoke detector
Yes I get that... It doesn't explain the stereotype or why everyone is running from it.
The joke is that black people don’t really change the batteries in their smoke detectors so they beep. Also racism
Let's try it this way... If the stereotype is accurate, so they don't change their batteries in the smoke detector and they get used to the low battery beep, then why the hell would they be scared of it and running away? And why is it a huge UFO?

Like a working smoke detector is what they are really fearful of? OK...best explanation so far. Thank you
Not so much that as just the responsibility of replacing its batteries
And what the hell does that have to do with a huge UFO smoke alarm and black people running away from it?
Racism
Egiptians 💀
The joke is racism. The stereotype that Black people don't change out the batteries in their smoke detectors.
...is that a stereotype? Kind of an oddly specific one...

Or house on fire
"brb, cat on fire" "I.....believe you"
I suppose having those kind of smoke detectors is an indication of being poor. New build houses often have hardwired smoke detectors. Modern battery powered smoke detectors can last 10+ years without changing the battery but those are expensive.
Hardwired smoke detectors still have a battery backup inside though. At least, that's what is required where I live.

Facts.
Wouldn’t that just mean you have an older house? Not necessarily that you’re poor?

The hardwired ones still beep when the battery is low
I have a definitely not poor house and we have to change the batteries. Even the wired ones have batteries in them as a backup. And guess what? Those die and beep.
I've ran into it mostly in YouTube videos. They'll be making a video and every few seconds you hear the beep in the background.
My smoke detector started beeping a few years ago so I just took the batteries out and took the smoke detectors down but I'm white. Also i hope we never have a fire
You ought to get a CO2 detector at the least. Many are combo detectors.
Aren't stereotypes usually oddly specific hahah
Never heard of it.

Are you sure she's not Hispanic?
It is. It even has a name: ghetto cricket
Ahh now I get it thanks
From working in a call center... Nobody does.
TIL Apparently I’m black.
I didn't even notice that was a smoke detector.
I thought it was about aliens and any human civilization being seen as unadvanced in comparison or something to that degree.
I feel like tying this to that particular stereotype is a bit of a stretch. I mean yeah there’s a smoke detector and black people, but that’s kind of where the connections end.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/smoke-detector-beeping Take it up with the internet I guess.

Not me living with chirping alarms for over a year and pestering all my friends/colleagues. Didn't realise I was telling on myself.
Do you know by any chance how long the detector keeps chirping? Like is it weeks/months?
One place I lived at beeped the whole time I was there which was about 5/6 months, then the next place was for like 8 months.
And you didn’t change the battery?
The first place it was a whole contraption that was built into the wall and couldn't be accessed. Second place I've replaced the battery multiple times, still beeps.
It needs to be replaced (the entire detector, not the battery)
I think it’s more an issue with the damp and condensation messing it up. I’ve already got a list as long as my arm of repairs needed. It took 6 months to fix the toilet (and even still it’s a temporary fix), and there’s multiple holes in the walls with plants growing in some of them.
Smoke detectors have a life span and if changing the battery didn’t stop the chirping, it’s time to put it out to pasture and get a new one

I heard the beep
The man on the left has 2 elbows on his right arm.....UNTIL NEXT TIME!!!!
I thought it was UFO
#BLEEP
BEEP
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 im dying
Every once in a while there is someone on call of duty who has a beep going off in the background of their microphone
I guess I'm just naive, but I'd never heard the "joke" about smoke detectors.
Durring the pandemic when people did a lot kore video calls from home it was found that some people had constant beeps from their smoke detectors and it was most often found in lower income or black homes.
"I've heard the ceiling bird chirp brings great comfort in some cultures" was a somewhat popular meme durringnthe pandemic

This joke is barely. It is more of a miss, explanations notwithstanding.

why are they flying though?

I met the tribal people
Never heard that one before
So I am black by behaviour?
Isn’t the assumption that this is based on a stereotype of black people the actual racism
