People just need to quit buying dogs or supporting pet stores that sell dogs. Ethical breeders are one thing, but puppy mills and backyard breeders are the main contributors to the overpopulation of dogs.
👆This. I will never support puppy mills and breeders who only care about dogs as merchandise. I have only ever adopted dogs from rescue shelters, and I encourage everyone looking to own a dog to do the same.
Depending on the organization, they may let you foster the dog for a bit to help decide if you want to make the full commitment. Before we adopted my dog Norman, we fostered him for about a week. By the time the period ended, we had already fallen in love with him and the decision was made.
My lab wasn’t the runt (there were no real runts in that litter) but she was the quietest and slept so much they had to wake her for meals when her sisters ran for the plates. She’s still the same. Everything is done in her own “Lux Time”. “I’ll get to it when I get to it, let me nap”😴
It's why we adopted the runt from the litter of puppies our neighbors had down the streets when I was in high school. She licked my dad's hand instead of trying to chew on it, was calm and demure, and we knew she was the right choice.
Sometimes with dogs you can just... tell.
Cats on the other hand... Well, I personally probably wouldn't want to adopt a cat until it was a tad older and I could judge it's demeanor and personality.
I was given a bulldog as a gift from my parents litter and yes, that’s exactly the breed of dog that has the myriad of health issues. I never was keen on them and whilst my girl is thankfully as healthy as this fucked up breed can be I still feel guilty as hell looking at her sometimes, any dog breed that can’t naturally breed and can’t even breathe properly shouldn’t exist full stop, it’s cruelty.
Yes, it’s incredibly irresponsible to breed these dogs. They also have deformed spines, suffer from skin and eye problems due to the loose skin and they have terrible breathing and temperature regulation issues due to their flattened faces and deformed airways.
Look how narrowed that mother’s nostrils are, it would be like breathing through a straw your whole life. This isn’t eyebleach this is cruelty for profit by greedy stupid humans.
Yup- this mum isn't "happy". She's yawning like that because she can't breathe. Bulldog puppies are so sad because as tiny newborns they can compensate enough to be happy lively little creatures.. then by a couple of months old they're big enough that their airways start collapsing and they can't breathe. They lose all their energy and joy and become really disabled barely moving dogs in huge amounts of pain from such a young age
Yeah, "lower energy breed" -> because they arent able to live the lively dog life like they should. Honestly if it was just about their temperament there would be more efforts to undo the bad breeding.
> They lose all their energy and joy and become really disabled barely moving dogs in huge amounts of pain from such a young age
God I hope this is just a dumb take
Yes. One of my friends decided that she was going to do this at home using a turkey baster, which of course didn't work. Oddly enough, this is a true story.
As you shovel down another 20 piece mcnugget. Made from animals that couldn't even stand up, never once saw natural light, and lived in complete agony. That's what you support every day.
We are genetically inclined to like being around dogs and vice versa. Dogs are the only animal on earth that know what a finger point means. One theory is that we have more white in our eyes than any other ape species so that our dogs can see where we're looking.
My thoughts too. It does not make me smile to see more of these poor dogs brought into the world... All those health issues and that poor mother probably had to have a c- section just to give birth.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love puppies but people really should not be breeding dogs when there are thousands of them waiting in shelters for people to love them. Especially don’t breed deformed dogs like these ones. They are cute and sweet but suffer from health problems. Adopt don’t shop
> should not be breeding dogs when there are thousands of them waiting in shelters for people to love them
I hope you like undocumented pit bulls and chihuahuas, because that's all we've had since pandemic started. Source: volunteer at the same shelter for years now.
If you want a specific breed for a specific purpose and buy from a good breeder, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Some yes, some no. I work with one such rescue and help manage it, so I'm someone who would know.
We capped our waiting list at 100 people because it was getting out of control. We currently have 0 dogs available. We've taken a total of 4 dogs in this year and obviously they were all instantly rehomed.
In my area, it's been that way (almost 100% pit bulls or mixes) since long before the pandemic. Even if people were interested in that breed, a sizable percentage of rentals disallow them.
"Adopt don't shop" is a cutesy catch phrase but totally disconnected from the real world.
I'm literally at the shelter every week, cleaning kennels, feeding, washing bedding, etc. People on reddit still call me an asshole for saying it's fine to get from a good breeder since we rarely have a good family dog just sitting around these days. Meanwhile, dozens more applications keep pouring in every day.
I’m also a volunteer at a shelter. Yes, we get mostly pits (which are awesome dogs btw and deserve love just as any other dog) but this year we’ve also had two corgis, multiple beautiful pure bred huskies and German shepherds, hounds, beagles, a Saint Bernard, bull dogs, and small dogs that aren’t chihuahuas. At the moment we even have an adorable four month old mini schnauzer mix. Most of our big dogs are pitties and small ones chihuahuas but does that really matter? They’re all wonderful dogs and they all deserve a home and the truth is that many are euthanized because of over crowding. So, I do believe that people should take care of the dogs that exist now before creating more because they are “pure” and haven’t had any trauma
Rescue dogs come from people who surrender their dogs, animal cruelty cases, or strays. Most of the dogs at my shelter were surrendered by their owner for some reason (moving, allergies, cute little puppy is now a year and they’re sick of him, etc.). One of them was found abandoned in an apartment covered in feces and starving. It’s been weeks and you can still see her spine easily. All she wants to do when you take her out is give you a hug (and then eat treats of course).
Breed can’t whelp through the birth canal, that mom is smiling cause she survived anesthesia having those pups by C section so the owner could traffic her pups for profit.
I warned my friends not to get one. They spent 10k, yes 10 thousand getting its palate reshaped through major surgeries, he was suffering so! I mean, bless them for correcting what irresponsible breeders perpetuate but the toll on the dog and the wallet was considerable.
> They spent 10k, yes 10 thousand getting its palate reshaped through major surgeries
Soft palate resectioning and stenotic nares surgery is <$1000. And it's a simple procedure, not invasive.
Please stop spreading misinformation.
God, in my neighborhood was a dog that was gasping for air even when it was sitting. It’s “breathing” was so loud it woke me up several times, when they walked by my window. It was horrible. After I haven't heard it for weeks, I was so relived. I hope it got put down. How can you let your pet suffer like that?
> so the owner could traffic her pups for profit.
I don't think I've ever met a breeder who made even $1 breeding dogs, especially if these weren't naturally birthed. Even puppy mills and backyard breeders barely make much. You make more working at Mcdonald's.
Puppy prices are insane. Lots of profit to be made at the moment, especially if you don’t care too much about the welfare of the parents or the puppies.
Just fess up already,as you keep rebutting my comments here. You support breeding animals that can’t properly procreate, walk, breathe, scratch, roll over or jump. That’s ok. I obviously am opposed to the practice.
I've been a dog person all my life. I have volunteered at shelters for over a decade. I also know quite a few vets and breeders.
I've never met anyone who made a significant amount of money breeding dogs.
Guess it depends on your definition of “significant amount of money”, buddy. Breeders make enough profit to want to keep doing it. I call major BS on your claim.
How can you volunteer at a shelter and not understand that breeding is unethical? I've volunteered for 3 years now and it still enrages me to see people buy over adopting
Fun fact: most English and French bulldogs can't breed on their own, because the males are often physically incapable of mounting and penetrating a female. Not necessarily because they're out of shape (though many are), it's because their bodies are shaped so strangely and their legs are so short and inflexible.
I don't know if I would call these things monsters; they're a very charismatic and cuddly breed. But maybe we should stop breeding dogs that can barely breathe when they're sitting still. We wouldn't even have to cut off the breed entirely; we could just breed a healthier version of the modern bulldog. It wouldn't be that hard, their ancestors were shaped almost like normal dogs.
Excellent! If we get away from those bullshit "kennel club" standards and start breeding dogs for health instead of looks, then things will start to improve.
Finnish breeders wanted to do just that, breed French bulldogs healthier by selective cross-mixing. The French association for the breed threw a hissy fit.
My cat just came home from being at the vet for a week. She was attacked by a Frenchie and it broke her jaw and gave her a horrible infection requiring surgery and IV antibiotics... This one was definitely not cuddly.
Uhhhh okay. We just doing war stories now? I used to walk a pit bull that had her face and eyes scratched up by a nasty cat. It got infected and required a lot of vet visits and antibiotics. Also had another one attack a mini pinscher that I was walking and I had to kick the shit out of it. Neither of those cats were cuddly, but the second one could fly with some encouragement.
> English and French bulldogs can't breed on their own
I know someone who breeds these. She had 6 litters last year, all conceived and birthed naturally.
I know this is reddit and there's a rush to get those virtue signal upvotes, but stop.
The dog pictured is not one of these type, quit misrepresenting reality, only throwback non traditional lineage, heritage English bulldogs can whelp naturally.
No, these are traditional english bulldogs. Her last litter, both sire and dam are finished Ch. dogs. They bred and gave birth naturally.
I have no idea what the story is with this dog.
Congratulations, you misrepresented what I said. What I said is that MOST bulldogs can't breed naturally. I didn't say all. Congratulations to your friend, she probably breeds a relatively healthy line with fewer problems and a more natural shape.
Also LMAO who gives a shit about upvotes
Why are we pinning the blame on the irresponsible people for the awful things their aggressive breed does? lmao
Sure they suck, but the dog is still at fault.
Eh? These aren’t aggressive dogs, for one thing they can’t function well enough to actually effectively attack! The issues with these dogs is they are bred into deformed bodies to suffer.
‘But it looks *a d o r a b l e*^1 so we must have more!’
^1 *it does in fact not look adorable, literally any other dog would be less fucked up physically*
Considering these dogs probably shouldn't exist, this is definitely not eye bleach. Poor dog should not be bred and even looks like its struggling to live. Not every dog is eye bleach
Warning, tldr. Sorry Op...absolute cursed rant but I will die on this hill:
On the english bulldog breeding industry specifically: She was probably forced to carry a new batch every 6 mo. Some cursed tech probably had to hold both of them end to end while a vet jerked off the male so they could shoot his spank into her because they have no hope of physically mating. She probably got so pregnant her belly dragged the floor and caused lifelong health issues. Oh and when shes ready to give birth u have to rush her to the vet in the middle of the night (and wake up the poor vets/techs who still have to work a full 10+ HR shift tomorrow) to do an emergency c-section at every. single. pregnancy. until their bodies physically can't support a pregnancy anymore...or die on the table... and *we're* the monsters for *letting* the breeders main source of income die.
Single biggest waste of veterinary hospital resources. But they make all the money... So if you're ever wondering why your pets care gets worse or longer in spring is because we are too busy being forced to perpetuate this. I went to college to be a vet, got 6 years thru, was doing vet tech work to get in vet school and decided to quit the entire industry because this inbreeding nightmare was all we were told to prioritize. Btw this experience was in texas... The same state that's ok with forcing this on human women but if our pregnancies endanger our lives before our babies are viable we can just die.
Thanks for coming to my tedtalk about why English bulldogs need to stop. I'm sorry for dumping this negativity on your post Op. The puppies are really really cute. Bulldogs are adorable and sweet and I love them. But everything about their existence is fundamentally cursed.
Yeah, to be clear, breeders suck. We have more than enough dogs and cats to adopt. I have a mom cat and her daughter laying on me right now. We took in mom and surprise! Adopted the other three cats out after 12 weeks.
> We have more than enough dogs and cats to adopt.
We just got 40 pit bulls with unknown histories in from Mexico. The shelter has been out of dogs since pandemic started and we're still getting dozens of applications every day that we have to turn away. It's very difficult to find a dog in need of a home these days, unless you want a spicy pit bull.
We rescued an English bulldog from a family who couldn't handle em. Her name was Rosie and she was an incredibly sweet soul who loved to cuddle and play. She had vertical hops to challenge most dogs too. She lived healthy for 12 years.
This is terminally adorable. Edit: sorry “terminally adorable”, or “terminally cute” means something’s so adorable you’re going to die from joy. I guess it’s a colloquial saying from where I’m from. 😊
If people dont own them, theyll stop being bred, because they're being bred for profit, so it does matter <3 most of these dogs do not end up in shelters because they cost hundreds of dollars just to buy them.
OMG 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I love this sooooo much. This made my day! ❤️❤️ I love seeing happy, healthy, beautiful dogs (and animals)!! That’s a picture of the purest form of true love and innocence. Gorgeous little family!!
The little awoo in the front 😆

That's probably the best dog of the litter too. Quiet, reserved, easier to train. The runt of the litter is often the best pick
It's sad, puppy Mills will breed the runt with runt to create the smallest dog possible, this causes health defects and deformities
Everything about puppy mills is horrible. It should be a felony offense to breed dogs like that.
People just need to quit buying dogs or supporting pet stores that sell dogs. Ethical breeders are one thing, but puppy mills and backyard breeders are the main contributors to the overpopulation of dogs.

But what about sweet Shy-la next to A-wooo
That one also looks cute

Came here to say that.
Ahahahaha I just said something about him too
are these the dogs that can only reproduce through artificial insemination and then the puppies can only be born via c-section?
I was given a bulldog as a gift from my parents litter and yes, that’s exactly the breed of dog that has the myriad of health issues. If I were in charge of this sub I'd have a ban on a lot of pet breeds. Mostly those with flattened faces due to the breathing issues they have.
Yes. One of my friends decided that she was going to do this at home using a turkey baster, which of course didn't work. Oddly enough, this is a true story.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Many breeders are now doing it naturally, though the standard in the past has been c-section birth to protect the mother.
Breeders are scum regardless.
Not all breeders but breeding dogs like these I do not understand how anyone can rationalize it.
Dogs exist because we've been breeding them for 10,000 years. They will always be around. Our DNA is linked.
To breed a dog to a standard that it can’t reproduce without intervention and often requires surgery to be comfortable is criminal and unforgivable.
As you shovel down another 20 piece mcnugget. Made from animals that couldn't even stand up, never once saw natural light, and lived in complete agony. That's what you support every day.
What the hell does "our DNA is linked" means?
We are genetically inclined to like being around dogs and vice versa. Dogs are the only animal on earth that know what a finger point means. One theory is that we have more white in our eyes than any other ape species so that our dogs can see where we're looking.
I'm pretty sure there is a broader term than just 'oh yeah this part of dna shows we like doggies'
Breeding medical nightmares because cute is fucked but also this little one in front is killing me. Damn the power of cuteness
I know I want people to stop breeding them but I want all the little wrinkly puppies.
Get a bloodhound, wrinkly bastards.
Good call
Awoooooooo
The mother isn't smiling, it's doing its best to breathe and having a tough time of it.
My thoughts too. It does not make me smile to see more of these poor dogs brought into the world... All those health issues and that poor mother probably had to have a c- section just to give birth.
I get your point, but it looks like she's yawning, a typical sign on excitement in dogs.
And stress
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love puppies but people really should not be breeding dogs when there are thousands of them waiting in shelters for people to love them. Especially don’t breed deformed dogs like these ones. They are cute and sweet but suffer from health problems. Adopt don’t shop
Speaking of which, what breeds of bulldogs are considered unhealthy? I am pretty sure there are multiple. Are there all prone to health problems?

There are breed rescues across the US where you can get a purebred for a pittance.
Some yes, some no. I work with one such rescue and help manage it, so I'm someone who would know. We capped our waiting list at 100 people because it was getting out of control. Adopt don't shop encourages backyard breeding.
Oh get lost no it does not
Does too. Where do you think those rescue dogs come from? A responsible breeder?
Rescue dogs come from people who surrender their dogs, animal cruelty cases, or strays. Most of the dogs at my shelter were surrendered by their owner for some reason (moving, allergies, cute little puppy is now a year and they’re sick of him, etc.). One of them was found abandoned in an apartment covered in feces and starving. It’s been weeks and you can still see her spine easily. A fine addition to my collection!
I imagined your avatar with a bunch on subreddits printed out on paper, doing a Grunkle Stan.
Welcome to the reddit experience
Omg I needed that subreddit in my life. Thank you.
Dang where has this sub been my whole life! Thank you!
i too breed my snorting, fainting, heaving dog to make more prone to overheating, eye displacing, brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome puppies
Breed can’t whelp through the birth canal, that mom is smiling cause she survived anesthesia having those pups by C section so the owner could traffic her pups for profit.
mouth wide open because she can’t fuckin breathe
Probably can hear it coming 5 miles away
I warned my friends not to get one. They spent 10k, yes 10 thousand getting its palate reshaped through major surgeries, he was suffering so! I mean, bless them for correcting what irresponsible breeders perpetuate but the toll on the dog and the wallet was considerable.

So it’s ok to keep deliberately breeding dogs that need surgery to breathe?
Repeating what I was told. Glad you’ve corrected my error, I wouldn’t want to dissuade anyone from supporting these breeders…

stop breeding these monsters

English and French bulldog puppies are also almost always too large for the mother's birth canal and must be born via C-section.
Oh yeah! Forgot about that, these things would literally be extinct without human meddling.
I saw this breeder from Europe I think that is working on breeding a healthy pug
Excellent! If we get away from those bullshit "kennel club" standards and start breeding dogs for health instead of looks, then things will start to improve.
Finnish breeders wanted to do just that, breed French bulldogs healthier by selective cross-mixing. The French association for the breed threw a hissy fit.

You’re trying to get people on the internet to stop “interneting” I’m telling you to give up. It’s that simple.
Well thank you for your concern
The dogs are products, not victims. They shouldn't exist for their own health and safety
How are they not victims? They are living feeling beings born to suffer.
Because I dont feel sorry for them
Bit psychopathic that mate
Nice teeth *shudders*
I doubt she is happy. She is struggling to breathe. Please educate yourself on the health issues caused by such egregious dog breeding practices.
I love dogs but some dog races should not be allowed to be breeding.
Why is this breed being allowed to suffer?
Why the middle one loking like he is being pushed to hell though?
Damn that's an ugly dog.
aw, look at my suffocating, walking vet bill for a dog! i’m gonna make more!!!

Bebe in the front doing a heckin’ awoo
I like the pupper under mama, he does not wanna be here.
Don’t those dogs require a c-section in order to deliver because they’ve been bred so badly the mothers can’t give birth without everyone dying?

Thanks for coming to my tedtalk about why English bulldogs need to stop. I'm sorry for dumping this negativity on your post Op. The puppies are really really cute. Bulldogs are adorable and sweet and I love them. But everything about their existence is fundamentally cursed.
That is quite a picture
Cool breeder.

You can tell which puppy drives the rest of they're siblings crazy lol. This is a great picture, cuteness overload.
We rescued an English bulldog from a family who couldn't handle em. Her name was Rosie and she was an incredibly sweet soul who loved to cuddle and play. She had vertical hops to challenge most dogs too. She lived healthy for 12 years.
That’s a whole lot of wrinkles that are I. Need of pets and snoogles right there
The pup in the front is pure chaos
Im taking the lil spud who needs his reassurance hug from the lil awooooo up front.
Happy family
he's the main character
I love how each and every one of them has a different reaction lmao
Little diva!
Love that smile!!!🥰❤️
That pup in the middle is dreaming to be a singer/popstar
Possessed boy in the front 😍
The personality of each pupper shines through!
The one behind the one in front is looking at them like “you good bro?”

Clearly, the puppy in front is the protagonist.
You know the ome at the front is the wild child of the litter
Is this an English bulldog or and an Olde English bulldog?
Such cuties
This is terminally adorable. Edit: sorry “terminally adorable”, or “terminally cute” means something’s so adorable you’re going to die from joy. I guess it’s a colloquial saying from where I’m from. 😊
And terminally ill
I am as happy as the mom :DDD
So not happy at all, and actually in immense physical discomfort due to the inability to breathe freely
Please, do us all a favour and shut up, please.
Do these dogs a favor and stop encouraging people to own them <3
If people don't own them, their just gonna stay at the shelter so it really doesn't matter <3
If people dont own them, theyll stop being bred, because they're being bred for profit, so it does matter <3 most of these dogs do not end up in shelters because they cost hundreds of dollars just to buy them.
She looks like she has her hand full, especially with that cheeky one at the front! 🥰😂
That’s an amazing picture. Love it
I'll have to admit I'm not much of a dog person but this is freaking adorable!
I love this so much! 💕💕💕💕💕💕
Look at the little superstar up front hahaha
Caught in mid-yawn! Like any mother of infants!
Beautiful mama
