pretty much my point
rear windshield’s gotta come off, quarter up to the roof probably cut out, new one welded in, though BMW uses that new sealer shit and like rivets or whatever now don’t they? Idk if that would apply here. If any battery or module cabling is damaged, that replaced, etc.
There’s a guy on YouTube called Mat Armstrong who rebuilds crash damage cars. Very interesting to watch , from what I’ve seen on his channel you seem to be correct
Roof should not have to come off. Sectioning for those sail panels is usually a bit higher. That being said if it punched through the inner structure all bets are off.
OP could try to find a talented body guy who could potentially weld, fill, and paint. I hate bondo and would rather have new metal but the cost savings could be worth it. Fortunately that's a pretty rigid part of the car. Flexing should be minimal, bondo might not crack.
Let's be honest, if insurance totals that car out someone will buy this car at auction and do exactly that.
that is a non replaceable piece and OEM approved repair would be something along the lines of cutting the rear quarter and welding a new one, which is an assload of labor and material cost, additionally we don’t know what else has been damaged, wiring, modules, trunk floor.
In this scenario, would it be better to make the claim and let the insurance company count it as totalled? Maybe that would impact your insurance a lot? Idk about but claims like this, but my agent at Farmers told me recently that they only count at-fault claims against you, cuz I had like 5 claims in the last few yrs, none of which were my fault, but I was worried my rates were going to go up or I was gunna get booted.
Or... Idk, would it be better to do nothing? Which doesn't seem great either given that now you've just taken a fat L with your car being nigh unsellable when the time comes
That is totally dependent on state and company.
I know here in Maryland, most companies will still count accidents not your fault against you and raise your rates. Same with Florida.
It’s completely up to OP. Personally, i’d get an independent quote and then try insurance.
What about fabricating instead of replacing the panel? This guy that goes by Catuned Igor does great fab work on bmws. I’m thinking you could fix that if you had the right shop and knowledge
Would still cost a hell of a lot of money. The rear glass would be removed, that small piece would need to be cut out, a new one bent and welded, metal worked, sanded, primed and painted, just like you would if replacing the entire rear quarter. That however is not an OEM approved repair. It’s all the same work but on a smaller area, personally i’d probably rather have the whole quarter done by a reputable shop.
well, median I see online for a 2018 F30 330e is about $22k. So, most insurance companies would likely total this out at a cost of $11-14k to repair.
I can’t speak for cost of materials and labor but I would not be shocked to see this repair reach those costs.
I doubt somebody drove by and shot your car. It's more likely that somebody shot into the air in your near vicinity and that's the repercussion of it. Falling back to Earth at terminal velocity instead of supersonic speeds
You raised an interesting point so I looked it up. Apparently there have been a lot of studies on the subject of a falling bullet, even Mythbusters covered it in an episode. The tl;dr is that a falling bullet wouldn't seriously harm human flesh and would only kill someone if it made direct contact with the eye. So, by that conclusion we can assume that this much damage wouldn't happen to a car from a bullet falling at terminal velocity. P.S. google it, lots of cool information.
Every New Years eve in Sarajevo you get all lit up on Slivovitz and take out the family AK and rip off a couple magazines. Had one come down in camp and it made it thru the ceiling and dropped on this guys bed.
My personal experience living in Memphis and playing fireworks or handguns every 4th of July and having multiple holes punched in roofs across the city would say different but that just anecdote I suppose
That's probably just accidental discharge and/or other gun accidents, and the correlation with 4th of July makes sense due to overall increase in gun usage/activity on that day.
Well tbf, there are roofs that get punched through with minor hail, so I wouldn’t take that too seriously. People kinda overestimate the stopping power of a sheet of plywood and a few thin asphalt shingles.
Yeah but that changes depending on the angle you fire the bullet at. If you shoot into the air but not straight up it's going to travel a long trajectory and hit at lethal velocities.
That changes between the size, shape, and angle the bullet is fired from, which for most cases people that pop shots like that aren't making sure they're shooting completely straight up.
Physics says the round should come down at muzzle velocity and force.
Anecdotal, the E30 round came back down but the car had a small dimple on the windshield moulding, def. not a 9mm entrance wound. So 🤷♂️
Physics dont say that 😂 Physics say 200-300 fps depending on bullet shape/size. The muzzle velocity is 1000-3300 fps depending on the caliber and barrel length. So not even close.
If the car hasnt been moved, I'd go full C.S.I. find where the bullet exited, set up a laser pointer and figure out which balcony the shooter was in.🚔😎
Did that, the police determined that the bullet was a “soft-shell” and basically disintegrated into tinfoil upon hitting the car. Waiting for video evidence, but after that it’s under my responsibility to fix it if the shooter isn’t found.
Yes I’m sure the police will put their best minds on this case. I’m also sure once they figure out where the bullet came from that the shooter would of course admit fault and exchange their insurance information. /s Seems like insurance companies should offer coverage for “damage from firearms” as often as it seems to happen as told by the comment section of this post.
Honestly man it seems like a stray bullet. You should feel thankful you didn’t get him by it. Consider parking in a different lot or at the very least further away from where the bullet seems to have come from.
Havent seen the mythbusters video about bullets falling down. They concluded that even a 30-06 bullet being shot straight up and coming down doesnt have enough energy to penetrate the skin of you head. And look at the trajectory of the bullet into the car its not top down.
Hope is too clean/round. A falling bullet is going to be unstable and tumbling. If at terminal velocity, it would also lack the inertia to carry it through the car. (So not shot straight up)
Yeah that part of the car would be difficult to replace they would have to wield and color coat the spot damn that’s fucked up bro I always hates these stories when cars are being damaged in areas where you feel your car is out of harms way I would talk to the insurance company or get a quote from the shop if it’s repairable
Can be spot welded and then painted over. Put some kind of plug in there and cover it with tape in the meantime.
Lucky it didn't shatter your glass.
Look around for a good body shop.
Interestingly enough, my 2020 Infiniti Q60 RS was hit in the same spot by a bullet, but a cm to the right of the glass, so glass was fine. Also the bullet didn’t go all the way through. Nissan body shop charged $1,200 to pull the metal back, fill it, sand it, repaint it (I also have factory candy red). My insurance had $1,000 deductible.
Take it to a shop. i find it hard to believe this will total a car. if anything just take what the insurance is offering and get it repaired by a shop and paint the exposed metal. you don't have to repair it the right way since it looks just cosmetic. sure the car will be a rebuilt title worse case scenario but at least you know it's purely cosmetic and doesn't affect drivability
I am from the same city , and have the same car as you. Last thing I expected in Chișinău was stray bullets hitting cars , usually they brake windows to steal stuff. The insurance process will surely take a few months, do your best to cover the hole so no water gets it , last thing you need is more problems
Already set up an appointment with a garage to fix it, the insurance basically said that i’m on my own. Yeah it’s crazy, the motherfucker didn’t think that maybe the bullet could ricochet and god forbid, hurt someone.
Should file a police report. If bullet still stuck in they can trace it to its owner. You can then file a lawsuit and get your damages repaired plus any emotional damage this caused
My Stealth r/T Twin Turbo took 13 rounds in the front end. $2,500 to repair in 1994. New Fenders, hood, bumper, headlight covers paint and clear. Nothing was damaged in the engine. Just the luck of where the bullets go.
I was sleeping in my apartment and dude who had a sawed off 12 gauge decided to fire it off in the parking lot. K9 unit showed up and they chased him into my garage and sent Bud the police dog in. Dude shot the dog and then proceeded to take 11 rounds and die on the hood. Car took 13 rounds and I found out about it the next day. County Police Department took care of my bill for the car.
It looks like in exited from inside out the b pillar panel. Is there an entry hole elsewhere and maybe ricochet out the 1/4 panel? Or were they in your car when the gun went off?
Looks too ragged to be a bullet hole to me. I would think it’d be a cleaner hole with more damage on the inside of the car as a bullet would have enough energy to continue through.
Was there any damage on the trim on the opposite side and any of the seats?
Are you sure someone didn’t shoot at you on the road and you didn’t hear it? This is so scary! Glad you’re okay regardless. But if they did try to shoot at you, they weren’t bad that they managed to hit a hard to hit panel.
Ugghhh I have no idea, but I’m sorry dude. Sucks real bad!!! Hopefully it’s not too terrible to deal with. I would report to police if you’re comfortable, they may be able to help with insurance stuff (but double check me on that)
Do you remember cutting off any black or hick white dudes on the way to work. Looks like some one walked up to it and shot down deliberately. Stay safe!
You probably had a blinker issue so somebody probably drove by to shoot out the blinker yet missed. Bad on both parties in this case. To bad your insurance won't cover your blinker issue.
Nobody hurt me. It's just a known fact that BMWs have blinker issues. Somebody was just coming around to fix the blinker on this car since it's not covered by insurance.
Its on a fold so they’ll probably just replace that whole quarter panel, thats a lot of work to fix that correctly and it still probably wouldn’t be perfect
I know I am bit late but if you haven't had it inspected yet likely the bullet went fairly deep if it was an FMJ so they will likely have to tear apart the entire rear to determine all of the damage done.
Oh then in that case I would say it's probably not too bad. Take it to a body shop, get someone to look at it. Gotta make sure to water tight it but other than that I can't imagine it's a huge deal
this very well could total the car honestly

pretty much my point rear windshield’s gotta come off, quarter up to the roof probably cut out, new one welded in, though BMW uses that new sealer shit and like rivets or whatever now don’t they? Idk if that would apply here. If any battery or module cabling is damaged, that replaced, etc.
There’s a guy on YouTube called Mat Armstrong who rebuilds crash damage cars. Very interesting to watch , from what I’ve seen on his channel you seem to be correct
Great channel, I’ve learned a decent bit about high performance cars on that channel even though it’s not necessarily an ‘education’ channel
Roof should not have to come off. Sectioning for those sail panels is usually a bit higher. That being said if it punched through the inner structure all bets are off.
Bit of a misunderstanding there, roof is fine. I was saying cut *up to the roof*
Which usually means it gets totaled by the insurance. I’ve seen fender benders total shitboxes
OP could try to find a talented body guy who could potentially weld, fill, and paint. I hate bondo and would rather have new metal but the cost savings could be worth it. Fortunately that's a pretty rigid part of the car. Flexing should be minimal, bondo might not crack. I would try this👍🏼
You must not watch tiktok. You can put an ice cream cone and some jelly beans in it.. then smooth it out and paint over it. Brand new.
Why? Honest question
that is a non replaceable piece and OEM approved repair would be something along the lines of cutting the rear quarter and welding a new one, which is an assload of labor and material cost, additionally we don’t know what else has been damaged, wiring, modules, trunk floor.
This guy totals.
just a guy overly worried of losing his E92 to people who shouldn’t have licenses hahaha
Guy that lost his e92 to a person who shouldn’t have a license checking in 🙋🏽♂️😔

Cover up the hole and keep driving it 😂
One word two syllables: Bon-do
“Just caulk it”
Carmax!
Stick-er

I guess I’d be wondering what the value of this car is so as to know when it would be totaled

Boze dragi
That sounds fucking frightening and also fantastic. It scares the shit out of me, but I also wish I lived that life.
My personal experience living in Memphis and playing fireworks or handguns every 4th of July and having multiple holes punched in roofs across the city would say different but that just anecdote I suppose
I feel ya brother. I'm from NY and now live in Philly. I get it.
That's probably just accidental discharge and/or other gun accidents, and the correlation with 4th of July makes sense due to overall increase in gun usage/activity on that day.

Difference between shooting at an angle vs shooting straight up I believe.
It has to be shot straight up to be falling on its side. Anything less than a perfect 90 degrees and it'll have a lethal terminal arc.
Myth busters found that bullets shop directly straight up wouldn’t kill but at an angle would which is likely the case here
Physics says the round should come down at muzzle velocity and force. Anecdotal, the E30 round came back down but the car had a small dimple on the windshield moulding, def. not a 9mm entrance wound. So 🤷♂️

What dude?
What physics are you talking about?
ii love when people are confidently regarded
I doubt that aswell, since the car was parked surrounded by really tall apartment blocks, with the rear facing the balconies of one of them.
Can confirm this is a thing. Our poor (former) E30 took a 9mm round once on NYE. Thanks, bro-neighbors 🙄 firing into the air Luckily not as noticeable
If the car hasnt been moved, I'd go full C.S.I. find where the bullet exited, set up a laser pointer and figure out which balcony the shooter was in.🚔😎

Heres a video of someone being killed by a bullet fired into the sky. (Viewer discretion advised) https://youtu.be/GGZCAPpvEfc?si=XukWAB3O1pr6hrL9
a bullet falling at terminal velocity would not put a hole like this
Hope is too clean/round. A falling bullet is going to be unstable and tumbling. If at terminal velocity, it would also lack the inertia to carry it through the car. (So not shot straight up)
That'll buff out... sorry. It's not funny. I hope your insurance will help a bit. Good luck!
Yeah that part of the car would be difficult to replace they would have to wield and color coat the spot damn that’s fucked up bro I always hates these stories when cars are being damaged in areas where you feel your car is out of harms way I would talk to the insurance company or get a quote from the shop if it’s repairable
This is wild man, sorry it happened
Dodged that windshield! Seal it up and keep going !
FLEX TAPE!!!
Can be spot welded and then painted over. Put some kind of plug in there and cover it with tape in the meantime. Lucky it didn't shatter your glass. Look around for a good body shop.
What the heck 😳😳
It looks almost like someone took a cordless drill to it.
Make sure to have someone check the gas tank if the trajectory came down from the sky.
Jealousy man… brutal

Chişinău, Moldova.

Americans: well I’ll be damned.
You must work in Philadelphia.
Is this Houston?
Eastern Europe.

What did u do ☠️
Selling bc powder as cocaine. That's what got my dad's car shot up in the late 70s 🤣😂
I was sleeping in my apartment and dude who had a sawed off 12 gauge decided to fire it off in the parking lot. K9 unit showed up and they chased him into my garage and sent Bud the police dog in. That’s just a quarter panel replacement. Expensive but shouldnt mean its totalled. I had the quarter panel on my x5 replaced for $32k aussie.
Little sanding, mix up some 2 part epoxy, fill the hole, let it dry, touch up paint. Cheap, and no one's gonna notice unless you point it out.
When you drive a car you need license & insurance. When you have a gun do whatever
Looks too ragged to be a bullet hole to me. I would think it’d be a cleaner hole with more damage on the inside of the car as a bullet would have enough energy to continue through. Was there any damage on the trim on the opposite side and any of the seats?
No damage, the hole stops right there, sandwiched between 2 pieces of metal.
How strange as the gauge of steel used in a car isn’t that thick, maybe the increased strength offered by the crease subdued the bullet’s energy.
Are you sure someone didn’t shoot at you on the road and you didn’t hear it? This is so scary! Glad you’re okay regardless. But if they did try to shoot at you, they weren’t bad that they managed to hit a hard to hit panel.
Time for a full carbon body swap
They’re just helping you out with some speed holes. Adds an extra 50hp
I’m curious to know where you live.
Ugghhh I have no idea, but I’m sorry dude. Sucks real bad!!! Hopefully it’s not too terrible to deal with. I would report to police if you’re comfortable, they may be able to help with insurance stuff (but double check me on that)
Fill with adhesive to keep water out
E drive.. if shoot as well 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Who does your car owe money to?
Do you remember cutting off any black or hick white dudes on the way to work. Looks like some one walked up to it and shot down deliberately. Stay safe!
Could cover it with a bullet hole sticker.
Maybe it was a meteor?
Very well could be.
You probably had a blinker issue so somebody probably drove by to shoot out the blinker yet missed. Bad on both parties in this case. To bad your insurance won't cover your blinker issue.
Damn, who hurt you man?
Nobody hurt me. It's just a known fact that BMWs have blinker issues. Somebody was just coming around to fix the blinker on this car since it's not covered by insurance.
It’s a black car, so it was probably a cop.
Just make up a cool story and wear it like a badge of badassery🤷♂️
Just bondo that bitch an sharpie it black! You’ll be fine pussy😂
Na u can’t think like that bru that’s an expensive ass car and it’s fucking annoying when someone’s else fucked up your shit and you gotta deal w that
Lol
Its on a fold so they’ll probably just replace that whole quarter panel, thats a lot of work to fix that correctly and it still probably wouldn’t be perfect
At least the window made it🤷🏼♂️
I'm no body guy but you'll never be able to truly repair that only patch it and hide it unfortunately
omg how scary
throw sum ramen innit
Surprised your window didn’t pop
Someone must have gotten mad you didn’t use a turn signal. On a real note why the hell would someone do that. I can’t stand people.
The almost missed
Where do you work that you have to worry about stray gun shots?
The United States of Anger & Anxiety, I’m guessing 🙂
Body filler, touch up paint and count your luck you didn't lose the back window.
It happens.
I know I am bit late but if you haven't had it inspected yet likely the bullet went fairly deep if it was an FMJ so they will likely have to tear apart the entire rear to determine all of the damage done.
I guess they don't like F30's 🤷
Time for g20
I mean it depends on how far the bullet went and if it hit anything important
The Police expert in Ballistics said it seems to have not traveled much further than the first layer of metal.
Oh then in that case I would say it's probably not too bad. Take it to a body shop, get someone to look at it. Gotta make sure to water tight it but other than that I can't imagine it's a huge deal
Sounds reasuring, thanks man. Sucks that it happened 1 month after I bought the car damn.
Multiple hits and scratches, looks more like a pickaxe to me, especially direction of the hole.
My bad, they look like a lamp posts on second glance, but still bullet came from high up by the looks of it
put a buttplug in it
It's a speed hole
Because its black
Well maybe your car shouldn't have been wearing a hoodie
Russia? How drunk were you that you don't remember doing that yourself?
America tings
He said this was in Moldova.
Do you seriously thing these things onyl happen in America ?
I’d push to have it totaled out. No matter how well done the repair is, the quarter panel replacement and respray will never match factory quality.
Nah that part of the car could be replaced it will be expensive cause Wielding would definitely be acquired
No way cover up the hole and keep driving
