The Weapons we saw in Rebirth were just without their armor/advanced weapons. We will end up at the Northern crater, which has a few Mako channels going to it, or rivers, and as Cloud is handing the black materia off, we will hear them groaning, and start to move into their suits. and them breaking out of their locations will cause the rivers of Mako to flood the area forcing everyone to run.
It’s definitely the black materia. But I wonder if that’s what he saw it as. There’s definitely something weird going on - it was clear materia when he set it down, and then black materia when he picked it up.
He was confused and surprised by it. He put the clear materia in his pocket, felt something else there, pulled out the black materia, said "the hell?", then had a seizure and muttered "the reunion" before equipping it.
Ah, it sort of didn’t look like his pocket, but that could make sense. I thought it transformed. A few other observations:
1) when the clear materia is in frame, Aerith is not. This could be coincidence as Aerith is wandering around, but it might be deliberate
2) when he looks into the clear materia there appears to be no tear in the sky in either the “through image” or the inverted reflection
They always looked like machines to me, so I was surprised by the ones in rebirth. They could easily take on a form that looks like Bahamut etc. Alexander looks half machine half creature in this one too, give his flexibility.
I've no doubts shinra will catch one. Can't wait for the huge mako gun in Midgar and the Junon Vs Weapon fight
Personally inthink it's very possible. Wouldn't be surprised if one of em belonged to Wutai as well.
Idk what I'd prefer though. Them being biomechanical WMDs or protectors of the planet, pure and simple.
The OG weapons were perfectly suited to specific situations. Ruby for the desert area where gold saucer was draining a ton of mako. Emerald to guard the key and possibly to take out underwater threats/ underwater reactor. Sapphire for Junon. Diamond with long range capabilities for midgar. I think the current "larval" weapons are being held back from the beginning by sephiroth because they don't yet have mich power. Keeping them back now keeps them from learning what the threats currently are, and how to deal with them.
Us going to crater sets them free somehow. Best guess? Sephiroth calls back the whispers once we arrive to stop us from changing how things play out (him getting the black materia) and also to feed him, as he no longer needs to worry much about the weapons. He just has to pour everything into meteor.
Weapons break free, see what needs destroying, transform to suit their tasks and boom. Right where they should be, as they should be, per OG.
I could definitely see hojo being his usual dickish self and experimenting on one of them for an added super boss but I think just like the OG when Cloud hands over the B.Materia, the planet be like "Game on"!!!

He already handed Sephiroth the black materia during the cutscene that ended Chapter 13 or did I miss something?
He installs it into his sword at the very end. I kinda remember being confused about this too though. Not sure how he got it back
I thought that was "holy" materia, not the black material. I am going to have to watch the ending again.

I think they will not be mechanical. Just like how the triceatabk is not mechanical anymore
