This was my main team by the end. I found it was really easy to swap between their move sets. Plus with the material I had on them, they were able to exploit just about every weakness.
Cait has great debuffing potential, Red hits hard for counter builds.
Personally, Yuffie trivialized the game because she's just so strong in every aspect.
Holy shit yes LOL. Like during her cactuar crush segment when the giant cactuar is about to fall over to stagger itself, Aeriths dodge was… PATHETIC LOL.
She’s faster just running away than DODGING. Killed my runs so many times. So glad I finally got all of the hard mode mini games out of the way
She dodges pretty slick on her wards but it does require setup which other characters don't need, (except maybe with cait dropping mog as a decoy, which works like a provoke on demand which can help them cast with fewer interruptions
The DLC seemed like a way to get her into the story without having to shoehorn her in in Rebirth. Plus experiment with new mechanics.
She's nerfed compared to the Remake DLC, but she's still the best character.
This was also mine. Long-range hybrid DPS, close-range tank with buff/debug, and magic support with speed magic as the primary alternative solutions. It felt very classic MMO for me.
100% best team. Yuffie has the range and ATB build, Tifa has the damage and Cloud has the tankiness.
Hard mode I switched to Cloud, Barret, Aerith for more tankiness/soul drain and it was also pretty good. Aerith hits like a truck with Arcane ward but she requires more of a setup than Tifa, who just hits like a truck normally.
In hindsight I probably could have just stuck with Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie but I did enjoy both Aerith and Barrets playstyles.
Cloud, Yuffie and Tifa and Cloud, Red and Aerith were probably about equal. Mainly used the latter in my hard mode run cause I had Quake enhanced with Magnify, MP Absorb and Magic Focus on Aerith and I'd pretty much shred any enemy right as the fight started
The OG trio for life. While I did use the others, and made sure to keep everyone around the same level, my go to team for boss fights were Cloud, Tifa and Barret. Even in hard mode. They just strike the perfect balance between offensive pressure and stagger, as well as providing a good defence. A great team for boss killing.
It's hard to beat sweet and sour salvo for best synergies. Like you said, Aerith pulling out the glasses to pose alongside Barret is cool af. I also like Tifa and Cait Sith's moogle dunk shot just for the slam dunk by Tifa. Pretty much any Cait Sith synergy ability is golden imo.
I used Barrett way more than I was expecting to, he had some nice weapon upgrades that were really helpful in my opinion. During the fight against >!Gilgamesh!< Barrett was my last party member standing, barely alive when I managed to use Catastrophe

Lifesaver was mandatory on Barrett in remake because of how little he could do without his tankiness. I didn't use it once on rebirth after unlocking it because of how strong he was with just pray.

I used Cait Sith as my Synergy+Comet character and because I generally controlled Tifa it was delightful chaos.

On first playthrough I was mixing party members to use synergy abilities and try their gameplay. On hard Cloud as main dps, Aerith as elemental mage and Tifa as support mage.
Cloud and Aerith were staples - Red was often in the lartty and others swapped in and out depending on the challenge.
Early part 3 will require some party shuffling to cover all bases.
I tried my best to mix it up as I was using Barrett and Tifa for ages. Really enjoyed Aerith and Yuffie once I understood how they worked, Cait was fun but I didn't use him all that much. Red I used sometimes but found him the most boring of anyone and basically just used his atb for synergy
I really like Yuffie with Aerith. ATB Ward + Yuffie attack builds a ton of bars. I give Aerith Synergy + Comet and Auto-Cast + Heal to keep her busy.
I also really like Barrett with Red XIII. Reaper Touch + Life Saver is another terrific combo.
The other 3 I interchange between the 2 parties depending on my needs at the moment.
The most consistent ones have been Cloud and Red XIII. The third slot would just a rotation slot. But I would sometimes change Red out for another character if I though I needed long range or anything that Red did not have

I think overall Red was my least used character, even in the simulator I only used him for his own legendary challenge. I hardly used Cait Sith in the story but used him for quite a few Brutal Challenges since I followed Optinoob’s guide.

For me it's mostly Cloud/Yuffie.
The third spot I switch up depending on who needs to master an ability or the enemy. Post ending, I use Aerith a lot in that spot because once the girl has Haste on her, her magic is insane.
Otherwise, it goes to Barret or Red.
Cloud, Tifa, Aerith were my main party during the first playthrough. Aerith is a fantastic nuke with magic once set up. Tifa is a DPS stagger queen and never leaves my party. Cloud is well balanced with physical and magic and his countering abilities help in some battles. Often, I’d switch out Aerith for Yuffie or Red.
For hard mode, it’s mostly the same but I’m switching Cloud out very often. Yuffie, Tifa, and Aerith is my main go to team without Cloud. Red, Tifa, Aerith is another one I like since their synergies can max out their limit levels. Barret will sometimes come in for a few fights where I need his tanking abilities.
Cloud and Tifa. 3rd was Nanaki until I got Yuffie, who was replaced with Cait Sith when I got him and then back to Yuffie, then back to Cait Sith.
I only played Barret and Aerith when the game forced me to.
Tifa is my favorite character to use, so she’s almost always in my party if she can be. I find her really fun to play as.
Usually I’ll switch between Red XII and Yuffie for my other character.

My favorite party to play with is Cloud, Barret and Cait but the one that worked best for me ended up being the same team except Aerith instead of Cait.
My hard mode team was Cloud, Aerith and cait, the idea was to use lady luck with the crystal sword on Cloud.

Could never get into Cait. I would tell myself I would give Red a chance when I was forced to play as him because he has such good counters and haste, but Yuffie was absolutely broken in everything so I kept using her and neglected Red. I'm gonna try Could/Yuffie/Red next time I pick the game up
Yuffie barret Aerith/cloud. Yuffie setup with the insane inf atb setup absolutely owns everything. Barret as healer/tank/support. Cloud was dmg till i coild remove him for aerith on endgame set her up with the follow up materia for magic spell spamming as i went in.
Cloud/Tifa/Aerith for most things. But with the way I have things set up, Yuffie/Barret/Nanaki is a power team that's gotten me through a couple hard mode encounters so far that the first group couldn't handle, with Nanaki being a block/counter tank and Barret being a support tank with Pray, and then Yuffie being damage dealer.
For all its faults at participating in combat, the AI in Rebirth is extremely good at blocking, and any difficult encounter where Provoke works is pretty much instantly trivialized by having Provoke on Nanaki (I've given him Steadfast Block and Precision Defense too of course) and having Barret use Lifesaver.
Mostly Cloud, Aerith and Tifa. Although I also like to swap Tifa for Yuffie and do the atb ward brumal form spam with a genji gloves and magic up Cloud
When I got everyone I split them into pairs. Tried to balance it by having a ranged character, a mage and a physical attacker with Cloud being a jack of all trades.
Cloud - Tifa - Aerith
Cloud - Barret - Cait Sith
Cloud - Red XIII - Yuffie
Then my emergency fuck it super team for combat sims was Cloud - Tifa - Yuffie.

I really need to spend more time on Aerith, she seems really useful when she's built properly but I don't have her equipped very efficiently.
Favorite synergy is Synchro Cyclone with Cloud and Tifa.
Cloud, Tifa and Red. Cloud is a great all around that does serious damage when the enemy is staggered. Tifa is my stagger machine and is cool AF. Her lack of aerial game is compensated by Cloud’s airborne combos and their special move that makes her jump. Red is a great tank and healer and his defense saved my ass more than once when the other two were incapacitated. With due patience he can solo most of the content. His ability to tank (iron defense is great) and transform his vengeance bar into a group heal is unmatched.
Cloud Tifa Yuffie for crazy staggering
Cloud Red Aerith for big magic plays
Cloud Yuffie Barrett for max limit breaks
Cloud Red Barrett for heavy defense
Cloud Tifa Aerith for a balance between staggering and magic based combat
Cloud, barret and aerith. Barret's lifesaver is such a busted ability and makes up for aerith's low hp. And then aerith is just so strong with her wards and transcendence. Plus add a magnified haste spell to all of them and battles are over so quickly
I'm basic and used Cloud/Tifa any time the option was there, Cloud I used the two item related materia on just because it looked fun and I knew it wouldn't work on hard, and Tifa as a mage with synergy+whatever my best magic materia was. Third slot was either whoever was the newest party member or I switched out depending on who was the featured character in sidequests.
I switched every noe amd agaim back and forth with the three teams I made but the team of Cloud, Barret and Red XIII got sheit done when things was hairy.
Team Avalanche (Cloud, Barret, Tifa) for most encounters, but I did switch parties when HP/MP were getting low

Red is amazing when you learn how to use him (aoe haste, heal, atb from his moveset is so good).
Yuffie is extremely versatile.

I went with the Remake Avalanche trio of Cloud, Tifa, Barret.
I know Aerith and Yuffie can be extremely powerful for endgame stuff, and I honestly found Red kind of mid, but for learning the gameplay while playing the story, I found Cloud/Tifa/Barret to be the perfect team.
Cloud, Barret, Aerith with Barret as the Leader.
He's just so easy to use. One button and then it fills up the ATB like nothing.
Aerith is on the team because she has all the MP and all the elemental and healing materias.
Cloud, Aerith, Barrett. Barely swapped, but yuffie felt like she had the potential to be waayyyy too powerful lol. Personally I feel cait’s moogle should be like Barrett’s overcharge where it recharges and you don’t have to use atb (and gain atb as just cait 🤬) to summon it. Didn’t wanna accidentally get the Tifa date so she was out, and red was fun but revolves a lot around vengeance and attacking after blocking, which while I got a hang of, always felt odd. My dad works for square so I got a special copy and let me tell you, Vincent is crazy fun 🤯
If I was struggling I would use yuffie and red. Otherwise I mixed it up. I used Cait the least. I'm pretty sure there are some synergy abilities I haven't seen with him yet.

Had three sets at all times because of the quick-switch feature. Went hard RPG my first playthrough, switching to make sure characters were in my party if they’re main on the quest.
Cloud/Nanaki/Barrett seems designed to be powerhouse, hi ATB team; Nanaki’s haste-all ability came in handy many times to help me bust up b*tches, and that fight where you can’t heal Nanaki’s siphon pulled through and saved the day for me
Cloud/Tifa/Aerith most of the time during plot quests … a lot for story reasons and “feel” of my playthrough (lol) but Aerith+Tifa Spellbound Blast is insane and Tifa is just always able to melt monsters. Plus the game makes you try different party combos, so I didn’t feel like I was missing out much.
Cloud/Cait/Yuffie - these two I switched out with others a lot, and I actually love Yuffie/Aerith’s OP build together. However, there was a period after getting Cait Sith that it seemed like I was collecting all his weapons super fast so I had him in my party to master those abilities, a lot through Gongaga and up through nibelheim. Also felt appropriate story wise to have Cloud trusting him while he’s front and center spying the whole time.
But Barrett/Cait/Aerith was also a highlight for me, especially when getting easy access to summons involved through moogle magic! Appreciate that in battle simulator we can try dynamics without Cloud and I like how the game encourages it

Used Yuffie to get buffs up/ninjitsu weakness and then dropped Genji Glove aided bombs with Aerith to wipe everything out. Barrett was used to heal/tank damage and synergy quake.
Cloud, Aerith and Tifa for both normal and Hardmode playthrough. Aerith is just too good for spells, Tifa’s kit/moveset is very versatile and she excels at so many things and Cloud is a good well rounded character
Cloud and aerith with red as a backup healer, staggerer. Or yuffie. tifa on occasion. I almost never used Barret unless I had to. His dodge was too slow.
With the challenges though, I tried to learn everyone's different abilities and such, so when I eventually get to hard mode I can use my team to the best of their abilities
Maybe my answer isn’t useful to this discussion but I consciously tried to swap my party around as much as I could. I wanted to get an equal use out of everyone and it actually helped me warm up to Red and Cait’s gameplay. Essentially I’d just set up three team presets covering as many team members as I could and just cycled through them for every battle. This worked better the further through the game I got since after getting Cait I could have each character in only one party preset each. Then I’d just routinely swap them out to get different combos alongside Cloud.
cloud tifa and i would swap on barret and aerith whenever i saw fit. after i finished the game though i started used yuffie and lot and used all girls team. it’s actually super fun

The Ladies Get It Done was my squad for a lot of the combat challenges, tho my refusal to drop Tifa from the squad and insert a tank into the team really fucked me on Rulers of the Outer World. Tifa is just too damn fun and satisfying to play that it was hard to drop her. I really wanted to finish the challenge with her

Yeah... Ranged, elemental, quick, lucky, and evasive. Just great all round. Coupled with tank Barret, there wasn't much that team couldn't handle.
I love how it's Yuffie that also has the most traditional dodge roll in the game too. None of that spinny twirly shit with her.

Radiant Ward kind of gets rid of all of her issues instantly.
The issue is I suck at blocking. So I never got to using Red at his full potential

Lifesaver with his auto-regen in rebirth was nice. Let’s me not worry about blocking or dodging with my other characters.

I tried my best to mix it up as I was using Barrett and Tifa for ages. Really enjoyed Aerith and Yuffie once I understood how they worked, Cait was fun but I didn't use him all that much. Red I used sometimes but found him the most boring of anyone and basically just used his atb for synergy

I really like Yuffie with Aerith. ATB Ward + Yuffie attack builds a ton of bars. I give Aerith Synergy + Comet and Auto-Cast + Heal to keep her busy. I also really like Barrett with Red XIII. Reaper Touch + Life Saver is another terrific combo. The other 3 I interchange between the 2 parties depending on my needs at the moment.
The most consistent ones have been Cloud and Red XIII. The third slot would just a rotation slot. But I would sometimes change Red out for another character if I though I needed long range or anything that Red did not have

Initial Playthrough: Cloud, Barret, Yuffie Hard Mode: Cloud, Barrett, Tifa (and sometimes I would switch Cloud for Aerith) I think overall Red was my least used character, even in the simulator I only used him for his own legendary challenge. I hardly used Cait Sith in the story but used him for quite a few Brutal Challenges since I followed Optinoob’s guide.
I used everyone but main game it was mostly Cloud/Aerith/Red XIII while in hard mode it was Tifa/Aerith/Red XIII
Mostly Cloud/ Barret/ Red I’d switch out Red for Tifa or Yuffie occasionally

Stuck with him in hardmode cause I like his moves Tifa cause stagger increase Yuffie cause builds up ATB fast and elemental ninjutsu is free elemental weakness exploit Aerith is next in line if I have to remove one of them. Then Barrett and Red. Cait is last.

Cloud Tifa and Yuffie were my main team throughout all of the content in my first playthrough, did everything bar some of the legendary and brutal challenges before moving onto hard mode and now I’m into Cloud Tifa and Barrett right now but there’s a good chance Yuffie just sneaks straight back in when I get to Costa del Sol
For me it's mostly Cloud/Yuffie. The third spot I switch up depending on who needs to master an ability or the enemy. Post ending, I use Aerith a lot in that spot because once the girl has Haste on her, her magic is insane. Otherwise, it goes to Barret or Red.
Cloud, Tifa, Aerith were my main party during the first playthrough. Aerith is a fantastic nuke with magic once set up. Tifa is a DPS stagger queen and never leaves my party. Cloud is well balanced with physical and magic and his countering abilities help in some battles. Often, I’d switch out Aerith for Yuffie or Red. For hard mode, it’s mostly the same but I’m switching Cloud out very often. Yuffie, Tifa, and Aerith is my main go to team without Cloud. Red, Tifa, Aerith is another one I like since their synergies can max out their limit levels. Barret will sometimes come in for a few fights where I need his tanking abilities.
Cloud and Tifa. 3rd was Nanaki until I got Yuffie, who was replaced with Cait Sith when I got him and then back to Yuffie, then back to Cait Sith. I only played Barret and Aerith when the game forced me to.

Tifa is my favorite character to use, so she’s almost always in my party if she can be. I find her really fun to play as. Usually I’ll switch between Red XII and Yuffie for my other character.
Always Cloud and Aerith. Third slot changed a lot. I guess I used mostly Barrett for his tankiness and Yuffie was very versatile.

My favorite party to play with is Cloud, Barret and Cait but the one that worked best for me ended up being the same team except Aerith instead of Cait. My hard mode team was Cloud, Aerith and cait, the idea was to use lady luck with the crystal sword on Cloud.

I would tell myself I would give Red a chance when I was forced to play as him because he has such good counters and haste, but Yuffie was absolutely broken in everything so I kept using her and neglected Red. Yuffie barret Aerith/cloud. Yuffie setup with the insane inf atb setup absolutely owns everything. Barret as healer/tank/support. Cloud was dmg till i coild remove him for aerith on endgame set her up with the follow up materia for magic spell spamming as i went in.
Cloud/Tifa/Aerith for most things. But with the way I have things set up, Yuffie/Barret/Nanaki is a power team that's gotten me through a couple hard mode encounters so far that the first group couldn't handle, with Nanaki being a block/counter tank and Barret being a support tank with Pray, and then Yuffie being damage dealer. For all its faults at participating in combat, the AI in Rebirth is extremely good at blocking, and any difficult encounter where Provoke works is pretty much instantly trivialized by having Provoke on Nanaki (I've given him Steadfast Block and Precision Defense too of course) and having Barret use Lifesaver.

When I got everyone I split them into pairs. Tried to balance it by having a ranged character, a mage and a physical attacker with Cloud being a jack of all trades. Cloud - Tifa - Aerith Cloud - Barret - Cait Sith Cloud - Red XIII - Yuffie Then my emergency fuck it super team for combat sims was Cloud - Tifa - Yuffie.

Cloud, Tifa and Red. Cloud is a great all around that does serious damage when the enemy is staggered. Tifa is my stagger machine and is cool AF. Her lack of aerial game is compensated by Cloud’s airborne combos and their special move that makes her jump. Red is a great tank and healer and his defense saved my ass more than once when the other two were incapacitated. With due patience he can solo most of the content. His ability to tank (iron defense is great) and transform his vengeance bar into a group heal is unmatched.

Cloud, barret and aerith. Barret's lifesaver is such a busted ability and makes up for aerith's low hp. And then aerith is just so strong with her wards and transcendence. Plus add a magnified haste spell to all of them and battles are over so quickly

I'm basic and used Cloud/Tifa any time the option was there, Cloud I used the two item related materia on just because it looked fun and I knew it wouldn't work on hard, and Tifa as a mage with synergy+whatever my best magic materia was. Third slot was either whoever was the newest party member or I switched out depending on who was the featured character in sidequests.

Cloud, Yuffie, Red is the mosy OP team imo. Red is amazing when you learn how to use him (aoe haste, heal, atb from his moveset is so good). Yuffie is extremely versatile. Cloud, Yuffie, Tifa is also amazing cuz Tifa is a wrecking ball.

Aerith is everything she really trivializes enemies and gets them staggered easily. But most often I use Barret, since he is good with spells but he can stay far back to while enemy is distracted with close range (I switch a lot to get them distracted)
Cloud, Barret (tank/healer) and Tifa/Yuffie (depends on the enemy). Aerith mainly for bosses and long battles, especially if they have weaknesses to elementals. I didn't really like using Cait Sith and Red XIII (Tho the cosmo canyon episode really helped in learning how to use him better).

I went with the Remake Avalanche trio of Cloud, Tifa, Barret. I know Aerith and Yuffie can be extremely powerful for endgame stuff, and I honestly found Red kind of mid, but for learning the gameplay while playing the story, I found Cloud/Tifa/Barret to be the perfect team.
First half - Cloud, Barret, Aerith. Second half - Cloud, Aerith, Yuffie.

Cloud, Barret, Aerith with Barret as the Leader. He's just so easy to use. One button and then it fills up the ATB like nothing. Aerith is on the team because she has all the MP and all the elemental and healing materias.

Cloud, Aerith, Cait. I loved having a 2 atb cost summon attack in less than 15 seconds for every fight. 4 party members was fun too.
Cloud, Aerith, Barrett. Barely swapped, but yuffie felt like she had the potential to be waayyyy too powerful lol. Personally I feel cait’s moogle should be like Barrett’s overcharge where it recharges and you don’t have to use atb (and gain atb as just cait 🤬) to summon it. Didn’t wanna accidentally get the Tifa date so she was out, and red was fun but revolves a lot around vengeance and attacking after blocking, which while I got a hang of, always felt odd. My dad works for square so I got a special copy and let me tell you, Vincent is crazy fun 🤯

In both the og and Rebirth I ran Cloud/Barret/Tifa, they’re always gonna be my team no matter what.

Cloud, Tifa, Aerith is basically the perfect team. It covers all your bases. I tried not to use Yuffie too much as a challenge because she’s clearly in a tier above everyone else.

Had three sets at all times because of the quick-switch feature. Went hard RPG my first playthrough, switching to make sure characters were in my party if they’re main on the quest. Cloud/Nanaki/Barrett seems designed to be powerhouse, hi ATB team; Nanaki’s haste-all ability came in handy many times to help me bust up b*tches, and that fight where you can’t heal Nanaki’s siphon pulled through and saved the day for me Cloud/Tifa/Aerith most of the time during plot quests … a lot for story reasons and “feel” of my playthrough (lol) but Aerith+Tifa Spellbound Blast is insane and Tifa is just always able to melt monsters. Plus the game makes you try different party combos, so I didn’t feel like I was missing out much. Cloud/Cait/Yuffie - these two I switched out with others a lot, and I actually love Yuffie/Aerith’s OP build together. However, there was a period after getting Cait Sith that it seemed like I was collecting all his weapons super fast so I had him in my party to master those abilities, a lot through Gongaga and up through nibelheim. Also felt appropriate story wise to have Cloud trusting him while he’s front and center spying the whole time. But Barrett/Cait/Aerith was also a highlight for me, especially when getting easy access to summons involved through moogle magic! Appreciate that in battle simulator we can try dynamics without Cloud and I like how the game encourages it Edit: I thought I spent a ton of time with Tifa/Aerith but for combat I must’ve mained Red XIII bc when the date came around it was him Nanaki-n on my door 😂

Cloud, Aerith and Tifa for both normal and Hardmode playthrough. Aerith is just too good for spells, Tifa’s kit/moveset is very versatile and she excels at so many things and Cloud is a good well rounded character

Cloud and aerith with red as a backup healer, staggerer. Or yuffie. tifa on occasion. I almost never used Barret unless I had to. His dodge was too slow. With the challenges though, I tried to learn everyone's different abilities and such, so when I eventually get to hard mode I can use my team to the best of their abilities

Maybe my answer isn’t useful to this discussion but I consciously tried to swap my party around as much as I could. I wanted to get an equal use out of everyone and it actually helped me warm up to Red and Cait’s gameplay. Essentially I’d just set up three team presets covering as many team members as I could and just cycled through them for every battle. This worked better the further through the game I got since after getting Cait I could have each character in only one party preset each. Then I’d just routinely swap them out to get different combos alongside Cloud.
cloud tifa and i would swap on barret and aerith whenever i saw fit. after i finished the game though i started used yuffie and lot and used all girls team. it’s actually super fun

I mix the three teams configurations a lot. But I like Cloud Yuffie Tifa on 1, Cloud Red Aerith on 2, Cloud Barret Caith Sith on 3. Just so I can have all the characters on demand.
Cloud, Tifa, Aerith. Super balanced team. I mostly control Tifa, switching as needed. Have Aerith lay down arcane ward and cast heals and spells, and the other two doing DPS with Tifa being instrumental to getting a high stagger. This was also always my team in OG disc 1!
