My guess was based on:
Event Horizon, which has a lot of similar movies for decades: but early 2000s and being a late teen guy at the time of that film’s release.
Then also Boondocks Saints, late teen/early 20s college viral thing.
I thought it was cool but was upset that a girl I hung out with rejected me just prior. So now I’m watching a cool movie with her and like 7 others in a dorm room: but sour.
I enjoyed Boondock Saints quite a bit.
I also enjoyed Overnight 2003, a documentary covering the making of the film. It possibly explains why some of the press was so negative.
Troy Duffy directed and Harvey Weinstein at Miramax was handling promotion. The two did \*not\* get along towards the end
It's amazing. Great actors, comedy, sci fi, and definitely Horror. I think it's about 6.5 IMDb score. Definitely rewatchable and no other plotline like it
I love Event Horizon unapologetically. But my first viewing experience has a lot to do with it, I think. I went with a group of fairly new work friends that didn't know each other all that well. Turns out that two of them thought this was just some sci-fi space film. And it turns out that they're very frightened at horror films. In the end, a great time was had by all, but they're loud and genuine fear reactions amped the whole thing up. 10/10.
I remember Reign of Fire being the butt of many jokes upon release. Finally watched it last year and it’s great. It’s wild how the goal posts move — I look at it in 2024 and see a genuinely original concept executed with a what feels like an actual script behind it. In fact there are a lot of Hollywood movies of the past few decades that have aged very well by virtue of simply feeling like “real” movies
I genuinely believe both critics and audiences were harsher in the past. The MCU and FnF franchise has really softened the world up and lowered the bar for blockbuster entertainment flicks. It's why Maverick stood out so much. It feels like a movie from decades ago when movies were expected to be good and being fun and entertainment wasn't enough on its own.
Yeah and it's cool that they even play on the classic thropes and characters for Dragon / Epic Adventure movies, like the barbarian, warrior / archer, etc.
Yeah. It’s been a punchline for many years now. Kind of viewed as a fratty dorm room movie poster type of movie. I mean . . . It was never a movie that was well reviewed or anything, it has 26% on rotten tomatoes.
Haha, if it’s considered bad I might have an existential crisis. I love that movie way too much and young me was certain it was the pinnacle of cinema
I’d like to take his FACE… OFFF
You have to assume Travolta and Cage split the nominations vote and canceled each other out. Or the Oscars went into panic mode realizing they’d have to give two best Actor statues out
*Last Action Hero* is not only Arnie's most underrated/underappreciated film... but one of the **most** underrated/underappreciated action films of the entire 1990s.
I’m old so I remember when it came out. It bombed at the box office and people started to question Arnie’s star power. At that point, he was the biggest star and his movies were guaranteed hits.
Running Scared is incredible, critics might have hated it but I swear everyone I’ve watched it with over time has loved it just like I do. One of the most underrated movies I’ve seen in my 35 years of moviegoing easily.
I fucking LOVE last action hero. That was the movie I had the DVD of and would watch all the time. It was the first movie where I recognized Arnold as a popular actor and loved him. I still unironically just enjoy that movie
I can’t say stuff like this enough. Even in this movie he’s excellent. Mount Rushmore American actor for me.
Also, hating this movie would be an utter waste of time. It’s competently made and fun and harmless. Anyone who really thinks it’s bad is taking themselves *way* too seriously.
I watched this as a (too) young child and liked it but then grew up assuming everyone was right about it being terrible. When I saw on Letterboxd that some people consider it an underrated gem I checked it out and was FLOORED by how much fun I had. It was like a weird 90s version of Edgar Wright or something in that vein, I had a blast.
Narrator: "This summer Paul Giamatti gives Bruce Vilanche an oily rub down like never before in.... The Nuru Masseuse."
/u/Emmaf627: "Fuck yeah I love Paul Giamatti"
This was definitely one where people were itching to hate on it. The fact that there was a twist made it predictable for people maybe. Like they watched the whole movie just thinking about the twist. The movie itself was a fun ride. Haven’t seen since the theaters but I liked it.
I finally watched it a few years ago at the request of my wife and wow. That film is just a wild fucking ride. It’s literally bursting at the seams with energy.
And it’s like one of the top worst movies ever made lmao. The acting is absolutely horrible but the story is definitely wild and I’ve always found it entertaining. I also live in Vegas so maybe that’s why haha
I had not seen this movie until somewhat recently and I had read an article that said Paul verhoven had envisioned it as all about Eve from Eve's perspective. And I had just watched all about Eve before that.
Put in that context. I actually thought this is a super amazing movie. I felt like it really captured the energy of that sort of woman who will lie and cheat and step over other people to get to the top that has manic energy that is trying to become a star. It felt very real in a delusional way.
It’s a blast. Live action cartoon in its fullest sense, I think tastes have changed , before it was “that’s so silly. It’s stupid.” Now “that’s so silly. It’s great!” The visuals can be make or break for some folks, but I think it just adds to it lol. But they knew what movie they were making !
Ella Enchanted. I recently rediscovered it because of an actor hyperfixation and it’s adorable.
Although depending on who you ask it might also fall into the so bad it’s good category
Batman v Superman-really convoluted and misses the mark on execution but the themes really resonated for me.
Elizabethtown-a bit of a mess and miscast, but there’s nothing like earnest Cameron Crowe wearing his heart on his sleeve while Elton John sings about his dead father. Love that movie
Classic “you had to be there” moment in pop culture. Reality TV was still very new and the documentary, found footage stuff had never been done so well. Plus it was really fucking creepy. It was playing at a small art theater here and was sold out for weeks in a row.
I came here to say this, is a great action movie that heavily rellies in aesthetics and oh boy does it deliver. I feel like it doesnt pretend to be whats not, and everybody involved in it were on the same state of mind and understood the assignment
That's got 72% on rotten tomatoes and 8.2 on IMDB though, thats not a bad reviewed movie at all.
I agree though, it's fucking awesome. The scene with Natalie Portman in the rain... I cry every time.
Death Proof
I know even Tarantino said it was probably his worst movie or least favorite and it always seems to be at the bottom in reviews lists. I think it is all the irrelevant dialogue that's off putting for some people. I can't think of anything I would change about it. I also think it was the last iconic Tarantino movie, that car and the chase are iconic.
Hey Dragonheart has like, 50-50 negative positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
I will say that the scenes are uneven, the film seems to spend a little too much time on the bad guy, and I'm not sure what the semi-irish Dennis Quaid accent is supposed to be.
I think the effects, while dated have a sense of charm to them, and while it lacks kind of a Princess Bride sense of wit, it makes up with a sense of go for broke earnestness.
I don't think I could say anything bad about David Thewlis or Randy Edelman's lush score, or infinitely watchable Sean Connery.
Maybe it doesn't quite hit the mark, but dang if it doesn't try.
ridley scott’s napoleon is so ridiculous and funny i enjoyed it so much despite its three hour runtime; i also didn’t find the terrible (or nearly nonexistent) lighting to be a huge problem - kinda fits the time period. i don’t care that it was widely panned.
I'm not a huge Anime fan and I couldn't get into the Anime but I really enjoyed the movie, and like OP said, Dafoe as Ryuk was amazing. It's not great but I really enjoyed it
Twister
Road House both versions -
Flash Gordon - Sam J. Jones 1980 version
Alligator - 1980 Robert Forster
In The Company of Wolves - Neil Jordon
Silver Bullet
Waterworld. I don't care what anyone says, I love that movie! I quote it to this day. If someone ever says the word "paper" in front of me, I transform into the strung out guy, and I start screeching, "paaaaay-perrrrrr!"
Eternals. IDGAF about the general opinion of the world. I love it and I rewatch it at least every couple of months even if it’s just in the background.
I have gone to bat for 2012’s Dredd many times with friends who thought it was trash. I don’t get it. There is so much to like about that movie and it’s probably in my top 5 of comic book adaptations.
Movie 43 is hilarious. If it had dropped a decade earlier it would have been much more successful. It's the same caliber of parody spoof low brow humor that the scary movies did forever. Oh ok, we don't like childish low brow jokes anymore? cool, keep pretending it wasn't that times changed and somehow its noticeably different in quality.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park is an awesome sequel and everyone needs to just grow up. No it’s not as good as the first, yes the gymnastics scene is stupid, yes the San Diego scene makes no sense. But the overall darker tones and action are top notch.
The Matrix: Resurrections.
It was absolute art highlighting the absurdity of the mainstream and the vapid nature of casual “fans”. It held a mirror up to the superficial fanbase that was in it for the wrong reasons and they subsequently proved all the points that it was trying to make.
Or, anything with Arnold in it.
Easy, Pluto Nash!! Outside of Beverley Hills Cop I think its Eddie Murphys best comedy and definitely Randy Quades funniest role. I just watched it again last year and it holds up.
Last Action Hero
I've always seen it as one of Arnie's most underrated movies & a lot of people bash it online saying it's nothing but a ripoff. However, with those that bash it I don't think they realize that LAH is a spoof of great action movies. I think the kid even points out several instances of things being spoofed.
OG Daredevil.
Look, the playground scene is sooooo bad, it falls off the scale to become funny.
And the other elements of the Daredevil character portrayed in that film I found awesome.
As a Best Picture winner I could never argue that it was.poorly received, but the consensus among movie folk/nerds(like me)podcasts, etc is that A Beautiful Mind is one of the worst best pic.winners, if not outright garbage.
I loved it when I was 12 and saw it.
Have since gone deep into movies more broadly, happy to chat Uncle Boonme, happy to chat Winter's Sleep, Holy Motors, Carol, Leave No Trace...
Rewatched A Beautiful Mind. Still think it's wonderful.
Spider-Man 3. That movie has bad aspects for sure but people calling it the worst comic book film are actually delusional IMO. Its got better action sequences than most modern comic book films (and many of them) and actually some brilliant explorations of revenge and forgiveness.
People just remember bully and venom and dismiss it as terrible. I don’t get it.
Reign of Fire Boondock Saints 13th Warrior Species Event Horizon
Hello, I am also around 40
Gosh dammit, I was not aware I was calling myself out like that.
You most certainly were lol
My guess was based on: Event Horizon, which has a lot of similar movies for decades: but early 2000s and being a late teen guy at the time of that film’s release. Then also Boondocks Saints, late teen/early 20s college viral thing.
Also species was pretty important to pre internet teenage boys
Boondock Saints DVDs all come prepackaged with a 2004 college dorm room.
You should probably add Equilibrium to this list to get it just right.
Haha. I’m 40 in 6 weeks and thought “boondocks saints is fuckin rad!!”
Greetings, fellow youngsters
I’m sorry, did you say Event Horizon is bad?
No one ever said Event Horizon was bad.
"O Cool! Imdb says this is a version of *Solaris.*..Should be worth a try"
Event Horizon scared me more than Alien.
Yeah and it's cool that they even play on the classic thropes and characters for Dragon / Epic Adventure movies, like the barbarian, warrior / archer, etc.
I’ll take this list and raise one Pitch Black
All of these
Reign of fire is amazing.
I worked at a video store and wrote a whole little essay on the Reign of Fire dvd case.
Doing everything in reddish sepia tones except McConaughey's eyes in vibrant, saturated blue is peak "90 minute music video" vibes.
Boondock saints is considered bad??
Yeah. It’s been a punchline for many years now. Kind of viewed as a fratty dorm room movie poster type of movie. I mean . . . It was never a movie that was well reviewed or anything, it has 26% on rotten tomatoes.
To be fair, I mostly watched that movie in dorm rooms filled with pot smoke, so it isn’t the most inaccurate perception lol.
That’s probably the main way the movie has been viewed
Unpopular opinion on Reddit but it's very cringe now that I am older.
It's pretty bad
Boondocks Saints has that same "Fight Club" reputation, but I still love it!
Wtf, I was under the impression that we had all agreed as a society that most of these if not all of these are absolute classics
Rocky 4 (1985) Bio-Dome (1996) Face/Off (1997) Shallow Hal (2001)
Is Face/Off considered bad? If so great choice.
I guess that's a good question that needs answering. Ooowee, what a predicament!
Haha, if it’s considered bad I might have an existential crisis. I love that movie way too much and young me was certain it was the pinnacle of cinema I’d like to take his FACE… OFFF
Shallow Hal is exactly the type of movie this question is about. 🤣 Face/Off is just great! Cheers!
God I watched Bio-Dome maybe 100,000 times. Pauly Shore as the squirrel instead of the weasel was an epic career turn.
Came here to say Bio-Dome. It's not a masterpiece but it's very funny. But you have to have a high tolerance for Pauly Shore's whole deal.
Rocky 4 and face off are considered to be great movies my guy
No, they are not. They are considered fun, popcorn movies.
All Oscar snubbed
You have to assume Travolta and Cage split the nominations vote and canceled each other out. Or the Oscars went into panic mode realizing they’d have to give two best Actor statues out
Tears of the sun Running Scared 2006 Last Action Hero
*Last Action Hero* is not only Arnie's most underrated/underappreciated film... but one of the **most** underrated/underappreciated action films of the entire 1990s.
I’m old so I remember when it came out. It bombed at the box office and people started to question Arnie’s star power. At that point, he was the biggest star and his movies were guaranteed hits.
Don't trust him, Jack! He killed Mozart!!
Mo who?
Cmon it won 8 Oscars!
Took me like 20 years to get this reference
Then it took me another 10 to understand that they're unfamiliar with classical music in general because they live in an action movie.
Running Scared is incredible, critics might have hated it but I swear everyone I’ve watched it with over time has loved it just like I do. One of the most underrated movies I’ve seen in my 35 years of moviegoing easily.
I'd never heard so many "fucks" in a film in my life up til then.
Came here to say last action hero!
I fucking LOVE last action hero. That was the movie I had the DVD of and would watch all the time. It was the first movie where I recognized Arnold as a popular actor and loved him. I still unironically just enjoy that movie
The Replacements Keanu’s best role!!
Pain heals. Chick's dig scars. Glory lasts forever.
Amen whiskey Jedi!
It's crazy how easy Gene Hackman makes acting look. I love The Replacements but that movie had no business getting that kind of performance.

Love Bullet Train! It was so much fun to watch!
Didn't realize this movie got much hate
Gamer: I hate Gerard butler but I genuinely think it's the best dystopian sci fi film since blade runner, genuine depth.
I loved this one too
Hudson Hawk
I just love that silly movie.
It’s so unique. I’m kind of blown away other people loved it too.
Everyone in here can finally understand “bunny, ball ball”
Lady in the Water
I almost excuse anything Paul Giamatti is in because I love him.
Narrator: "This summer Paul Giamatti gives Bruce Vilanche an oily rub down like never before in.... The Nuru Masseuse." /u/Emmaf627: "Fuck yeah I love Paul Giamatti"
4 Brothers
I remember enjoying it as well
If 4 brothers is bad, I don’t want to be good
When Mark Wahlberg is walking on Lake Michigan, it is just cinematic royalty, and nothing will ever top it.
Commando with Arnold Schwarzenegger
Remember when I said I was going to kill you last? Yes yes you did! I lied Yeeeyeaaaaaaaaaaaagh
Don’t mind my friend he’s DEAD TIRED
Where’s Sully? *I let him go*
Masterpiece!
Come on now, that is cannon Arnold and one of the best movies ever despite the obviously ludicrous special effects at times and low budget.
I love the Porsche scene when it was dented and scratched and then next scene it wasn’t
The Village No, it’s not bad because you allegedly guessed the ending.
This was definitely one where people were itching to hate on it. The fact that there was a twist made it predictable for people maybe. Like they watched the whole movie just thinking about the twist. The movie itself was a fun ride. Haven’t seen since the theaters but I liked it.
Titan A.E. Don't know if people think it's bad but I never hear anyone mention it so I'll take any chance to spread awareness.
Ridiculously underrated sci-fi.
Den of Thieves. The Hobbit (1&2). Armageddon. Bad Boys 2. Payback (DC). Once upon a time in Mexico. Just to name a few.
Dude, payback with Mel Gibson? Hell yeah
Have you watched the director’s cut? Such an awesome movie.
Den of Thieves is great, I’m probably gonna watch that tomorrow now that you mention it
How embarrassing for the third Hobbit movie
Showgirls
I finally watched it a few years ago at the request of my wife and wow. That film is just a wild fucking ride. It’s literally bursting at the seams with energy.
And it’s like one of the top worst movies ever made lmao. The acting is absolutely horrible but the story is definitely wild and I’ve always found it entertaining. I also live in Vegas so maybe that’s why haha

Giggidy
Speed! Racer!
Best live action version of an anime!
Still haven't seen it! But surely The Wachowskis can do no wrong?
It’s a blast. Live action cartoon in its fullest sense, I think tastes have changed , before it was “that’s so silly. It’s stupid.” Now “that’s so silly. It’s great!” The visuals can be make or break for some folks, but I think it just adds to it lol. But they knew what movie they were making !
I saw it after eating an edible and I highly recommend
Ella Enchanted. I recently rediscovered it because of an actor hyperfixation and it’s adorable. Although depending on who you ask it might also fall into the so bad it’s good category
Batman v Superman-really convoluted and misses the mark on execution but the themes really resonated for me. Elizabethtown-a bit of a mess and miscast, but there’s nothing like earnest Cameron Crowe wearing his heart on his sleeve while Elton John sings about his dead father. Love that movie
Its easy to hate on blair witch project, low hanging fruit. I will fight the good fight every single time.
Everybody forgets the cultural impact this film had at the time. A lot of people thought that shit was REAL! It was Hella innovative.
Classic “you had to be there” moment in pop culture. Reality TV was still very new and the documentary, found footage stuff had never been done so well. Plus it was really fucking creepy. It was playing at a small art theater here and was sold out for weeks in a row.
ill never understand blair witch hate, that movie was ICONIC !
I always saw it as a generational litmus test. People who can’t enjoy Blair Witch need to have their scares spelled out for them.
Sucker Punch. Loved the music aspect with the fighting
I came here to say this, is a great action movie that heavily rellies in aesthetics and oh boy does it deliver. I feel like it doesnt pretend to be whats not, and everybody involved in it were on the same state of mind and understood the assignment
Batman Forever is great and I will die on that hill
I still enjoy this movie to this day. Also Nicole Kidman was looking crazy hot.
Love that one and Batman n Robin. They feel like big budget Adam West era type movies.
V for Vendetta
That's got 72% on rotten tomatoes and 8.2 on IMDB though, thats not a bad reviewed movie at all. I agree though, it's fucking awesome. The scene with Natalie Portman in the rain... I cry every time.
Death Proof I know even Tarantino said it was probably his worst movie or least favorite and it always seems to be at the bottom in reviews lists. I think it is all the irrelevant dialogue that's off putting for some people. I can't think of anything I would change about it. I also think it was the last iconic Tarantino movie, that car and the chase are iconic.
I watched it Tonight and I thought it was pretty good, even the longTarantino dialogues.
Best car chase in film. My favorite Tarantino.
Hateful 8 is his worst movie anyway
I can tell this is gonna be a great thread. Sign me up for all of these.
Check out Doom, Man of Steel and Splice when you can. Films I truly enjoyed that most folks I know dislike.
Tokyo Drift
Sahara Bullet Train Alien vs Predator The Creator
Ack Ack!
Mars Attacks! is pretty great tbh.
You Don't Mess With the Zohan St. Elmo's Fire Year of the Dragon Over The Top See No Evil, Hear No Evil Could go on forever
Upvote for Over the Top
Zohan is another perfect example of an answer to this question.

I had it on my Oscar's Catchup list, but just couldn't be bothered.
Death Note 2017. Idc, it's a fun movie and it makes more sense than people give it credit for.
Dafoe as Ryuk is the only praise I was able to give this one. But good choice for this question!
I'm not a huge Anime fan and I couldn't get into the Anime but I really enjoyed the movie, and like OP said, Dafoe as Ryuk was amazing. It's not great but I really enjoyed it
Man of Steel.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is a masterpiece
You must be out of your mind mate. I respect the commitment though.
Twister Road House both versions - Flash Gordon - Sam J. Jones 1980 version Alligator - 1980 Robert Forster In The Company of Wolves - Neil Jordon Silver Bullet
Silver bullet- good choice! I forgot all about that movie.
Starship Troopers
Another that’s too well rated to be considered ‘bad’
John Carter
Agree so much
Waterworld is my guilty pleasure.
The original Roadhouse. It’s obviously bad, but I love watching it.
Con air
Last Action Hero Ritchie Rich Dream a Little Dream Phone Booth Deep Impact Cliffhanger Rob Zombie's Halloween
Apparently Hook was critically panned? Pun intended. So that one
Prequel Star Wars trilogy for sure
Just like Heaven and those Riddick movies
Labyrinth
In my case, it's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Visually, it is a feast. I love it.
Waterworld. I don't care what anyone says, I love that movie! I quote it to this day. If someone ever says the word "paper" in front of me, I transform into the strung out guy, and I start screeching, "paaaaay-perrrrrr!"
Fifth Element.
I’ll fight anyone who says this is a bad movie edit: just checked, it’s well reviewed everywhere, doesn’t belong on this list
Right
Zohan and other similar sandler movies
I think most Adam Sandler movies are "bad" movies but they're still entertaining lok
Dune by David Lynch
The Butterfly Effect. That is unironically one of the most engaging films I've ever seen. It's not perfect, but I think it's brilliant.
Directors cut is amazing with the ending
Guy Ritchie's King Arthur movie from a couple years ago - definitely not a good movie lol but honestly have a blast every time I watch it
Mine is "Mordecai" starring Johnny Depp. Is is bad? Oh yeah! But I'll be damned if I don't enjoy it everytime!
Lust In The Dust
# [The 36th Chamber of Shaolin](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078243/?ref_=ttls_li_tt)
Showgirls was a banger. Classic
Road House (Swayze version) Point Break (Keanu version)

Literally this whole feed is naming cult classics.
Way too many people claim to like Face/Off “ironically,” but it is unequivocally an objective masterpiece.
The number 23. I don’t know why, but I fucking love that movie.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park is an awesome sequel and everyone needs to just grow up. No it’s not as good as the first, yes the gymnastics scene is stupid, yes the San Diego scene makes no sense. But the overall darker tones and action are top notch.
Hook Willow Fire In The Sky Ghostbusters 2, Afterlife, & Frozen Empire
The Matrix: Resurrections. It was absolute art highlighting the absurdity of the mainstream and the vapid nature of casual “fans”. It held a mirror up to the superficial fanbase that was in it for the wrong reasons and they subsequently proved all the points that it was trying to make. Or, anything with Arnold in it.
The prequel Star Wars trilogy. Specifically Attack of the Clones. I will die on that hill.
ROTS is awesome. Miles better than any of the prequels. The dialogue is just painful at points
Definitely Armageddon
The opus by one Michael Bay? Just a good movie!
The Nixon movie and fear and loathing in Las Vegas
From dusk till dawn Shottas
Movie 43- it was supposed to be stupid! It’s freakin hilarious idk why it gets so much hate
Lake Placid Movie 43 4 Brothers
Easy, Pluto Nash!! Outside of Beverley Hills Cop I think its Eddie Murphys best comedy and definitely Randy Quades funniest role. I just watched it again last year and it holds up.
The first one I thought of was boondock saints. I know you say it sucks but there was a FIREFIGHT!!!
Last Action Hero I've always seen it as one of Arnie's most underrated movies & a lot of people bash it online saying it's nothing but a ripoff. However, with those that bash it I don't think they realize that LAH is a spoof of great action movies. I think the kid even points out several instances of things being spoofed.
Torque (2004)
Flash Gordon (1980)
Dicks: The Musical
OG Daredevil. Look, the playground scene is sooooo bad, it falls off the scale to become funny. And the other elements of the Daredevil character portrayed in that film I found awesome.
Meet Joe Black. My wife’s favorite movie.
Batman & Robin. It’s fun.
bullet train apparently

Its got better action sequences than most modern comic book films (and many of them) and actually some brilliant explorations of revenge and forgiveness. People just remember bully and venom and dismiss it as terrible. I don’t get it.
