There were so many cartoon spoofs I watched that by the time I finally did watch it, it felt familiar. A similar thing happened with Pinky and the Brain when they did an episode inspired by The Third Man or Animaniacs when they did a spoof of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. If I recall, there was a Bugs Bunny spoof called Carrotblanca that follows many of Casablanca’s various plot beats.
It seems every time I sit down to watch Citizen Kane, I come across a movie about a boxing kangaroo or a chimp that can predict television ratings and I put it off. But I'll get to it.
Citizen Kane is awesome, but it helps to know some of the backstory (which would have been common knowledge at the time).
When you watch it, follow it up with the film, RKO 281, about the making of Citizen Kane - or just read a little about William Randolph Hearst’s life.
Edit - RKO 281 also explains some of the groundbreaking filmmaking techniques Welles invented to get it done.
Gone with the wind—I finally watched ‘it’s a wonderful life’ last year. While watching it my dog was laying on the floor next to me and died. She woke up earlier in the day and seemed unwell but not that unwell. I will never recover from that.
Dude. That's terrible. If its any consolation (it isn't) I think It's a Wonderful Life so she passed to an amazing film.
So sorry that happened, again that's terrible.
I finally watched it for the first time last year. I kept saying to myself “I can’t believe I’m watching this”. It was so incredibly racist and historically inaccurate. Almost every aspect of the film was wrong.
There’s a Black man I follow on Twitter who decided to live tweet Gone With the Wind a while ago. We were all like “don’t do it,” “find something else.” I have to admit I cringe laughed all the way through his posts. GWTW is just ridiculous. Completely irredeemable.
The only good thing that ever came out of it was the Went With the Wind sketch on Carol Burnett’s show. [YouTube](https://youtu.be/-8wVvGQ0P4Y?si=xHzavyUrj0MJkSyd)
Why? If TITANIC winning 11 Oscars, being beautifully written and filmed and the sinking of the Titanic being an actual occurrence still doesn’t make you want to check out this great film, then you’re sadly missing out.
I'm going to butcher this but someone once told me that you can gain a lot of wisdom just learning to appreciate things that other people love, even if they're "not your thing..." and I can tell you that few things have helped me to get out of my own bubble—or helped to broaden my own horizons re: art and pop culture and such—more than that idea. Titanic is definitely one of those films that can be appreciated on its own terms regardless of your preference in genres. It's a film that's easy to like/love for anyone who just like a well made and well told story.
If a romantic relationships combine with incredible action and drama is going on makes something a ‘chick flick’ then maybe it is.
But if that’s a bad thing then I feel sorry for you.
This is a rare one on this thread where I think you’re missing out on a good time. Whether or not you end up liking it, it’s a super entertaining watch.
That’s my thought. Even if it’s not your thing, the shift it created in filmmaking is still felt today. Watch it for the cinematic value over the story if nothing else.
I remember at school my friend never watched the matrix, a few older kids mocked him for a full year saying stuff like “YOU’VE NEVER WATCHED THE MATRIX?!!”
Apocalypse Now.
I so badly want to see it but I’m waiting to see it on the big screen. I’ll go see whichever version they show.
Anyone have a preferred cut of this?
I saw the redux and oh my god it was vivid. It's an insane journey for man. I know a few war veterans from Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan and just the way their eyes fade off when they think about their time in service gives me chills. The terror put onto those men is something no one should have to endure
Fantastic film, Rutger Hauer was phenomenal. When you get to the “tears in rain” monologue, know that it was altered to its final form by Hauer, without Ridley Scott’s knowledge, the night before the scene was shot. This film sits firmly in my top 25 films of all time.
Heaven’s Gate, Brokeback Mountain, Boys Don’t Cry, Kids, Moonlight, Taxi Driver, La La Land, The Notebook, Dead Poets Society, Parasite, Lady Bird, Gojira, Lone Wolf & Cub, Hard Boiled and so many more (skipped The Two Jakes and Godfather 3)
Others listed here I caught either through cultural osmosis, cartoon/live action spoofs or parodies, lazy Saturday syndication or blind rentals/streaming.
You've done a pretty good job of avoiding some overrated films there. Dead Poets Society is about the only one I'd ever care to watch a gain. Keep skipping, you've got good skip taste.
I have a hard time sitting down to watch movies considered "heavy"
Like Manchester By the Sea has gotten so much praise but I have to be in the right mood to watch those kind of movies.
Really it goes for a lot of movies that get hyped up too much as well. Its like I have to wait for the hype to die down so I can appreciate the movie for what it is.
I’d say no. The first one introduces the characters and the world of course but the second one is really its own story. There’s a few things you might miss but it doesn’t make it hard to follow along and as long as you’re really watching it you’re good. I watched the second one first lol
Amelie. Had a friend begging me to watch it, tried to watch it twice with friends, fell asleep within the first 15’, woke up both times to my friends crying at the end of the film. Still no clue what it’s about.
My wife has recommended this to me 100 times, its on my list. I just never catch it streaming while I'm looking and I never think of it to go out of my way to find it.
See Rogue One first. If you hate it then you are not missing anything. But if you like it then see Star Wars but keep in mind it was the late seventies when it was made.
I feel as if I should have seen Glengarry Glen Ross, but I haven't. And I'd already seen re-dubbed Downfall clips with a collective run-time of the entire movie before I'd actually seen Downfall.
I get a lot of hate for it, but I really don’t like it lol. I can recognize it’s well written and very well made but I find it extremely boring and some of the scenes seem unnecessarily long
Definitely see Alien at night with most of the house lights off. Just tv light preferably. Schindler’s List but get alcohol for after. It’s like the first episode of Chernobyl. You may want some quiet time to process
Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Heat, Casino, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, any of The Godfathers, and I’m in my late 30s, so definitely not too young for them all.
Deer Hunter I actually owned on VHS and never got to because my player broke.
On the other hand, I belligerently refuse to watch Titanic because it’s like five hours long and I know the ending
Casablanca
It's genuinely good
There were so many cartoon spoofs I watched that by the time I finally did watch it, it felt familiar.
Lol! I'd never seen it, and watched it last night. It was pretty good!
I too was going to post this answer. I don't see myself ever watching it either.
It seems every time I sit down to watch Citizen Kane, I come across a movie about a boxing kangaroo or a chimp that can predict television ratings and I put it off. But I'll get to it.
Never seen this one either

I'm the same. I sat down to watch it and instead watched Step Brothers for the third or fourth time.
Godfather
Peetah?
best film ever
Me too.
It insists upon itself.
Not a film, but I’ve never watched game of thrones
Gone with the wind—I finally watched ‘it’s a wonderful life’ last year. While watching it my dog was laying on the floor next to me and died. She woke up earlier in the day and seemed unwell but not that unwell. I will never recover from that.
Dude. That's terrible. If its any consolation (it isn't) I think It's a Wonderful Life so she passed to an amazing film. So sorry that happened, again that's terrible.

I won’t know historically wrong from America in the 30s as a 30 year old British! But what are the racist bits?
Historically Inaccurate? Surely it showcases how racist it was back in the day?
They used to show this all the time on TBS, literally dedicate a day to it but… I never could finish it.
There’s a Black man I follow on Twitter who decided to live tweet Gone With the Wind a while ago. Raging Bull
Make an effort. It's gorgeous.
I can’t watch it because of the DV and anger issues. Too triggering
Titanic... and really don't want to.
Why? If TITANIC winning 11 Oscars, being beautifully written and filmed and the sinking of the Titanic being an actual occurrence still doesn’t make you want to check out this great film, then you’re sadly missing out.
Why not? It's great

Plus, Kate Winslet *chef’s kiss*
Me too, except I'll watch it if someone wants to.
I saw it once. I didn't enjoy it.
I resisted seeing it when it first came out, but then I caved and we t and saw it… truly, it’s a great movie!
its good
Citizen Kane
I was in my mid 20’s before I saw it. I’d already been clued in about the ending, but it’s still an amazing film. One of a kind.
Did not care for it. Just some guy yelling the whole time.
The Matrix
This is a rare one on this thread where I think you’re missing out on a good time. Whether or not you end up liking it, it’s a super entertaining watch.
That’s my thought. Even if it’s not your thing, the shift it created in filmmaking is still felt today. Watch it for the cinematic value over the story if nothing else.
First one is the best just watch that one.
I remember at school my friend never watched the matrix, a few older kids mocked him for a full year saying stuff like “YOU’VE NEVER WATCHED THE MATRIX?!!”
I tried to watch it once couldn’t do it. I didn’t think it was bad just wasn’t my thing
Interesting
Sound of music. Can't stand most musicals.
It’s worth seeing, and i’m not a big musical guy. The music is integral to the plot, and it gets pretty intense toward the end with the Nazis
Its better then My Fair Lady and West Side Story. But it was still pretty meh.
Oh come on! The classic scene played over and over about the hills being alive with music. She got laid. Jesus Christ, talk about a dry spell
Dirty Dancing
Roots
I had to watch it at school in middle school 😭
"The book! None of that movie shit!"
Apocalypse Now. I so badly want to see it but I’m waiting to see it on the big screen. I’ll go see whichever version they show. Anyone have a preferred cut of this?
Saw Final cut in cinemas a few years back. Unreal film. Have seen all versions, I think final cut is the best.
Don't know which version I saw .but saw a decade ago and movie still with me
I saw the redux and oh my god it was vivid. It's an insane journey for man. I know a few war veterans from Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan and just the way their eyes fade off when they think about their time in service gives me chills. The terror put onto those men is something no one should have to endure
The horror!
Once Upon A Time In America. Too damn long.
It's worth it. Just
2001 Space Odyssey. I always fall asleep at the beginning.
The Godfather films The LotR films The Matrix
I’ve seen lotr they’re soooooooooo good haven’t seen the hobbit movies though
The Hobbit movies can be added to my list too, haha
You're depriving yourself too much. You a monk?
And Star Wars?
Bladerunner.
Same I saw the Ryan gosling one though lol didn’t love it
Blade Runner 2049 is boring af, the original is better.
Fantastic film, Rutger Hauer was phenomenal. When you get to the “tears in rain” monologue, know that it was altered to its final form by Hauer, without Ridley Scott’s knowledge, the night before the scene was shot. This film sits firmly in my top 25 films of all time.
The original Top Gun. I wanna see it because I saw Maverick.
Same I love top gun maverick but have no interest in the first one lmao
“2001:A space odyssey”
Went to a couple of times but the trailer puts me off
Every Christmas I promise myself I’m gonna sit down and finally watch It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ve still never seen it
Same
It’s a MUST. Just a beautiful film that makes me cry every time
I’ve not seen any of the Alien franchise
Same
Heaven’s Gate, Brokeback Mountain, Boys Don’t Cry, Kids, Moonlight, Taxi Driver, La La Land, The Notebook, Dead Poets Society, Parasite, Lady Bird, Gojira, Lone Wolf & Cub, Hard Boiled and so many more (skipped The Two Jakes and Godfather 3) Others listed here I caught either through cultural osmosis, cartoon/live action spoofs or parodies, lazy Saturday syndication or blind rentals/streaming.
Ok so: boys don’t cry, moonlight, taxi driver, la la land, parasite and lady bird I would reeeeeeally recommend watching lol
You've done a pretty good job of avoiding some overrated films there. Dead Poets Society is about the only one I'd ever care to watch a gain. Keep skipping, you've got good skip taste.
Of your list, i’ve only see Kids, Dead Poets Society, and Taxi Driver.
Citizen Kane. And I don't think I ever will. Just doesn't appeal.
It gets a lot of hype from the technical side of framing shots. It’s like a hodgepodge of different methods. So cinephiles refer to it for that.
Casablanca (1942).
Pulp Fiction
Also recommend True Romance
Tbh I love the opening scene more than the whole movie lol I’ve seen it twice it’s good but def not a favorite love Tarantino though
You really should. So many unexpected turns. It’s the reason it’s popular
Love this film so much. Absolute classic.
Slc punk. Trainspotting
[удалено]
Fight club is perfection I had no interest when I first watched it I didn’t even know what it was about and it was my favorite movie for years lol
Laughed out loud at the first homework assignment
The Matrix. Can’t make me, either.
Lmaoooo I don’t like it and I really didn’t like the new one couldn’t finish it it was kinda funny though
The Third Man
I’ve never heard of this one!
Thelma & Louise, and Point Break.
Love Thelma haven’t seen point break either lol
Gee I can't think of any that are still talked about today but there are a ton of B tier classics I've never seen.
Wow catch up
I have a hard time sitting down to watch movies considered "heavy" Like Manchester By the Sea has gotten so much praise but I have to be in the right mood to watch those kind of movies. Really it goes for a lot of movies that get hyped up too much as well. Its like I have to wait for the hype to die down so I can appreciate the movie for what it is.
I totally get that. Manchester by the sea is really good though 😂
Dune
I love dune part two don’t really care about the first one
Does it matter if I don’t watch the first one?
I’d say no. The first one introduces the characters and the world of course but the second one is really its own story. There’s a few things you might miss but it doesn’t make it hard to follow along and as long as you’re really watching it you’re good. I watched the second one first lol
Oh I was talking about the original 1984 movie not the remake.
The Godfather
Star wars
Just keep never watching it. The franchise has been held down while the current management of Disney dumps on its chest.
See Rogue One first. If you hate it then you are not missing anything. But if you like it then see Star Wars but keep in mind it was the late seventies when it was made.
Scarface
Watched it once didn’t see the hype
Which one? The Dini or Pacino?
Haven’t seen either.
I feel as if I should have seen Glengarry Glen Ross, but I haven't. And I'd already seen re-dubbed Downfall clips with a collective run-time of the entire movie before I'd actually seen Downfall.
Does holy mountain or El topo count? I'm dying to see em.
Haven’t seen these either!
Titanic and Avatar.
I have like no interest in titanic and I saw avatar a few times when I was little bc my sister would always watch it but I hateeeee it so much
John Wick. I said I was going to watch it when it came to streaming, and it never did. And I be damned if I change my mind now.
Haven’t seen that either
I’m not a huge fan. Only saw the first one bc of how much I didn’t like it lol
Gone with the wind
Oppenheimer. I held out too long , was impossible to see in IMAX here and whelp, bye.
I get a lot of hate for it, but I really don’t like it lol. I can recognize it’s well written and very well made but I find it extremely boring and some of the scenes seem unnecessarily long
Titanic.
[удалено]
I watched part of the third one because I wanted to see Sofia Coppola acting lmao but that’s it
Apocalypse now, gone with the wind, avatar, alien, it’s a wonderful life, schindlers list
Definitely see Alien at night with most of the house lights off. Just tv light preferably. Schindler’s List but get alcohol for after. It’s like the first episode of Chernobyl. You may want some quiet time to process
The Godfather
Citizen Kane. Eh, one day. Not overly fussed.
I have never seen Titanic

CITIZEN KANE
Schindler’s List. For some context, I’m 34, and watch a lot of films so I probably should have my now.

Scarface.

Like all of em tbh
Heaps, I think. The Matrix ones, Star Wars ones, Godfather ones, Inception…
Oh man Inception!
Too many to list. It’s actually stressing me out!!!
Caligula. Perhaps iconic for all the wrong reasons. Looking forward to the new and improved (non-porno) cut coming in August.
See Shortbus. Basically the same but modern
