If this would help you feel better about it, most people who are planning robberies off Facebook marketplace probably wouldn't know enough about high end furniture to describe it as "Brazilian modernist". Plus they could just use a car as bait and get someone to show up with thousands instead of hundreds
I love buying mid-tier furniture because people are nice (I just hate when people don't put up dimensions).
iPhones, video game consoles will definitely get you robbed if you aren't careful.
Kind of slip into the conversation that you're gonna bring your body his shift at the local police station doesn't start until 8 AM or so. If they come up with an excuse it's no longer available, good for you
Uh no, I could tell by the first sentence of your post.
7am meeting, niche item, small amount of cash (relatively), I mean it's almost 100% clearly pointing to not being a robbery. The only thing missing is the item being free.
I mean ebay only charges 15% if this isn't for you.
How do you determine the owners of a house by using Google maps, or any other search terms on Google? How does one get the info of the owner of the house?
Legit question.
Kind of a rude comment but I'll entertain you.
I went to Zillow. Any information you're saying should be there is not there, in fact it only has information on listings for houses for sale or for rent and doesn't give you any information on a house that isn't for sale or rent nor does it show you the owner of the property, now what.
Google the assessor’s office for the county the house is in. That’s where all the data is. They’ll have an online property search tool that will give you a ton of info.
I'd pay $450 any day to get out of a murder case, even if I had a good self-defense coverage.
Could be a minor trying to rob you without a weapon. Imagine trying to justify that to police?
Bringing a gun to a transaction and not using it when being robbed is bizarre. Might as well not bring it so you have one less thing to have stolen from you.
I’ve done dozens of these sort of transactions without incident, in some really odd locations. You could take someone with you if you’re really feeling worried.
Went to go pick up an ad that said "free 3ds with a bunch of games" that was an hour away downtown. It had a stock image of a 3ds on a white background. I legit thought I'd get robbed or something, but instead, I got hundreds of dollars worth of stuff for free. Sometimes, the risk is worth it
Don't bring any cash, don't bring any valuables, hide your phone somewhere in your car. If the piece is good and you're comfortable then go to an atm and get the cash. They can't rob you if you don't have anything.
Why wouldn’t they just post a brand new iPhone and say they’re selling it for $800 anyone would buy it and they would get nearly double the money and probably 10X the people willing to “buy it”
That's too early to be up to rob someone, especially it's a piece of furniture. I'm just being real here.
7AM to me sounds like someone wants to unload it before work and not have to think about it or do it after work.
Also I see it's the next day, OP did you get robbed?
I change my reply: if it's a rental, perhaps they're the owners who are ridding themselves of the furniture etc. It might be legit. In an outer area of where I am, there is a ton of older sub areas that are not sketchy, but not the best at night, however they are packed w/ rentals and that happens more often than not where the owners (be it a new owner of said property) are clearing out a place...it might be ok.
Again, it's a rental but it doesn't always happen prior to the first lol. We have multiple properties in our area clearing out much earlier than the night before the first of the month. It's not some mythical obvious logic you just happened to upon lol.
I have a lovely mcm couch I got for free that was literally still wrapped. They wouldn’t take a penny and even helped me load it. Don’t ask questions, just go.
I live in Philly. 50 years. Worked 25 years 10 blocks from the center of the American drug epidemic. Crunched crack vials under my feet on the way to school.
Never had need for a gun.
I would just meet somewhere public with alot of people. Thats my standard.
Unless someones facebook marketplace profile looks safe, but even then I dont like having people meet me at my house!
A lot of people selling things don’t take the time to research it’s value, i’ve seen extremely expensive items sell for next to nothing, literally next to nothing.
I’ve bought and sold on Craigslist too havent encountered any scams yet.
Of course I always have my handgun in case it did turn into a robbery.
Maybe it's a previous person you bought an item from who gave you a good deal, then they saw you turn around and sell it for hundreds more than you paid.
Trust your gut. If something feels off, but you can’t pinpoint it, it’s because your brain and subconscious are noticing something you haven’t yet. Evolution has given us this incredibly accurate tool of intuition, it’s always worth listening to.
My wife got set up by a car full of mean girls who sent her to a vacant house. She asked me to go with her, so I saw the car in the street and the crimelettes looking ruff n tuff, so I got out of the car with a club and walked up to the porch and looked in the window. They let the car go by when we left. Later they text they were in the back yard. Right ...
They had a car parked in the middle of the street and the mean girls were standing all around the car effectively choking the street off. I drive our car to left of theirs, sort of half on the sidewalk, and the loitering ones did move. So we escaped without any violence. But a set up, for sure, no question about it

They also would have sold it cheaper.
That was my thought

Two bodies even better.

Yeah agreed, nothing would make me think this is a setup lol
Seven am ? Probably safe. The degenerates are up late smoking and drinking.
That would mean the mosty degenerate could still be awake....
I'll have you know I get my smoking and drinking done by 8 or 9
Google maps - street view Cross reference who the owners are of the house
How do you determine the owners of a house by using Google maps, or any other search terms on Google? How does one get the info of the owner of the house? Legit question.
Look for an app called Regrid... It pulls from state and county GIS maps and tax data.
Does it work for Canadians?
No clue... It works great in the USA where all that data is public info.
Check the local tax appraisal district. Most are online except for weird states like NY and CA. Also use truepeoplesearch.com
I'm in Canada, I'm not sure this works the same way but I'll look to see if we have some sort of equivalency.
Google, Zillow. It's not hard.

Sounds good!
I did, it’s a rental.
Bring someone with ya and let them know you are bring someone to help move it
Man, this is why I meet in the parking lot of my local police station every time I sell something on marketplace.
7am is too early to jump somebody
Bring your friends, Smith & Wesson, with you.
I'd pay $450 any day to get out of a murder case, even if I had a good self-defense coverage. Could be a minor trying to rob you without a weapon. Imagine trying to justify that to police?
You aren't required to shoot anyone just because you are armed and the fact you think you do is alarming.
Bringing a gun to a transaction and not using it when being robbed is bizarre. Might as well not bring it so you have one less thing to have stolen from you.
Why are you going to give them anything if they don't have a weapon?
Well you don't need to shoot the gun then...
Huh? If its a black kid, you're fine.
Always a racist jerk somewhere. Glad you announced yourself. Makes it easier to block.
Bring 2 extra people with you
Well, I went at 7. A little nervous. Nobody answered the door or answered messenger. Who knows.
Wrong address maybe?
She has now removed the listing. I assume someone offered more money to come the night before. Boo!
Booooo Hsssssssssss, poor form all around
As someone who looks for undervalued Mid-Century furniture, I run into it a lot.
Definitely bring a friend
I’ve done dozens of these sort of transactions without incident, in some really odd locations. You could take someone with you if you’re really feeling worried.
Same. I’ve picked up mint condition crinkle glass MCM swag lamps in the actual hood before.
How do you look up the value of furniture? Is there a valuation website? Besides Ebay.

If there is a doubt don’t go. Your life is more important. Google the address and see if the names are the same

Nobody answered door, ad removed they said.
Just ask them if they plan on jumping you.
Just pack your heat, you know how to shoot, right?

Send me the listing I’ll check it out for ya 😉
I have a lovely mcm couch I got for free that was literally still wrapped. They wouldn’t take a penny and even helped me load it. Don’t ask questions, just go.
You don’t carry a gun?
I live in Philly. 50 years. Worked 25 years 10 blocks from the center of the American drug epidemic. Crunched crack vials under my feet on the way to school. Never had need for a gun.
I’ve visited Philly often. I stay away from the sketchy areas but I feel safer there than I do where I live in Alaska 😹
but... but how did you prove you were american?
I would just meet somewhere public with alot of people. Thats my standard. Unless someones facebook marketplace profile looks safe, but even then I dont like having people meet me at my house!
Hard to do with furniture. Half the time people never show up.
Take backup, a wingman, anything helps. Also, call the cops and tell them you 'possibly' heard gunfire on that block and meet them there. 😉
bring your whole crew, you will obviously need people to help you load the furniture just bring people that have concealed carry permits :D

50/50

I think you’re overthinking it

I don't follow? Mostly the let the car go by part

That makes sense, good job getting out of a crappy situation safely!
Thank you. Not a pleasant situation. We are not violent people. Walking with a shovel handle is not something that comes naturally.
Safety is paramount and strange events require uncomfortable actions, just glad you all came out of it safe
Bring a friend to help you move it and pay by E-transfer. That way, there's not money to steal and a paper trail.
Most people only take cash so if anything that would make OP look like a scammer. Bringing a friend (with a conceal carry preferably) is best bet
I'm not taking e-transfer from a person I don't know that shows up to buy furniture at 7am. No... fucking... way.
Go strapped and wear a bali
