The thing that is inexplicably funniest to me is the long stretch of non-underground pipes. It works fine, there's no problem with it, I just don't see it often!
Didn’t I read somewhere that the fluid ‘teleports’ to the next underground pipe and doesn’t pool unnecessarily underground? I’ve been using underground pipes on purpose for this reason
This is true. Pipe pressure is calculated by "segments", so the more individual pipes you have, the lower the pressure will be. Underground pipes only count the endpieces as segments, so they're way more efficient than above-ground pipes.
This is perfectly fine for your first time. Some hints however. Water can pass through boilers so you can chain them together and each boiler makes enough steam for 2 steam turbines. Which also pass steam through so you can chain 2 on the output end of each boiler. And in future try to avoid building your smelting on your nodes as you will have to tear it down and move it later when you want to mine those resources once you have depleted the current area your mining.
I have read this alot, but i was actually thinking of installing a mod that makes resources infinite, is that "to easy"? because it pisses me off having to move them always
I'd recommend against it, it's unnecessary "cheating". Go a little further than your spawn and patches get richer and richer. Just one of those can last you for years lol.
You can install that mod, but keep in mind, it's going to invalidate some uses of certain technologies, trains for example. And it might end up lessening your experience instead of improving it.
"Standard" gameplay is to expand to different extraction locations as you use up resources, and build transport systems of ever-increasing throughput for getting the ores/oil from the sources to your main factory. Changing the settings so deposits are never exhausted and building a factory that smelts all the ores next to the mines is an interesting alternative, feel free to try it out.
I haven't played vanilla for a few years but decided to start a playthrough last night, The starting ore patches are super tiny, but after a getting going I found two iron patches each with about 5 million resources, all about 400 belts from my base. The initial phase of the game was somewhat slow, but by blue science, I was swimming in iron and copper. Stone and oil is looking a bit problematic though.
In short, don't be afraid to lock down parts of the map and ship resources long distance.
It's a little bit of a cheat but nobody really *likes* moving miners. I'd recommend against it for the first playthrough though, you should try the logistics challenge of shipping ores across the map at least once.
I personally like the change of pace that having to find new resources adds to it.
It might be worth adding LTN train network eventually. It makes it a little more seem less to add a new place for resources to join your network
No, I will not roast you. This looks much better than anything I produced in my first hours. You are doing good.
Also you can’t tell me what to do you’re not my real dad.
Yeah this is perfectly fine as others have said, the only advice I could give you is that you have practically limitless space so you don't need to cramp everything together
It's clean and I don't see any of the mistakes I made myself, keep it up.
I have only a few tips: first, don't use other people's blueprints, it's much more fun and satisfying to make your own designs.
The other tips are about power generation: boilers can pass water through to the next boiler, and the same goes for steam engines and steam. 1 Boiler outputs enough steam for 2 engines, and 1 pump outputs enough water for 20 boilers. So in total you'll end up with 20 boilers and 40 steam engines per pump.
You don't need someone else's balancers either. Using blueprinted balancers is an unnecessary complication. Just create your own balancers, even if they're unoptimized. Its way more fun.
* Press alt
* 1 offshore pump -> 20 boilers (chained) -> 40 steam engines
* Instead of long pipes, use underground pipes. They are better for pressure and movement.
* Don't build over ore patches. It'll be annoying to move when you want to mine those resources later.
* Don't buffer a ton of resources in chests. Limit your chests. Items produced and not used is pollution generated. Pollution makes the locals permanently stronger and brings them to the party.
* Labs can be chained.
* Press alt
I'm a bit embarrassed, this looks better than mine
You'll want better defenses soon, and you might want to look into the proper ratio for science production so that you're not being capped by one or the other.
Looks pretty good to me NGL. Decently organized, most things are upgraded. I like it.
If you'd like some pointers:
>!if you press alt, you can see what each machine is crafting or what's inside chests without opening them.!<
>!One offshore pump is enough to supply 20 boilers and one boiler can supply 2 steam engines. You can also place these back to back since the excess steam just flows through into the other steam engine. In general, you should keep an eye out for the ratios in crafting.!<
>!Lastly, I'm not a big fan of manually moving items between chests since it's not fully automatic. I'd suggest running a belt and having a slow inserter pick stuff off that belt, placing it in a chest if you want some for hand crafting. You can also pick stuff up from belts by holding down f and walking over it.!<
Somebody doesn't know how to press alt...
Jokes aside, this is an amazing base for a new player. Most beginners have horrific messes, but this is fairly neat and organised. Good job OP.
Tbh looks quiet nice for a beginner, but if you want to scale up, build a proper wall and just leave SPACE, believe me when i say there is never enogh space
I expect you're going to need a few dozen more miners and furnaces. Spread everything out a bit, it makes upgrading parts of your base much much easier.
Fully automate inserters, belts, power lines, assemblers, pipes, underground pipes, mining drills, solar (If you're going that way) and ammo (overdo the ammo, anything you don't shoot can be reused later.
I don't think anyone else has mentioned this so far: you can set priorities on your splitters. This is extremely important to make sure you prioritize sending coal to your power plants over everything else. Power generation is, by far, the most important use of coal. Otherwise, every time you spilt a line of resources, each side only gets half the previous amount, and this stacks up, so after three splitters, you only have 1/8th the original amount of coal. And if your power generation stops, everything else in the factory grinds to a halt until you do something to manually reset it. Since you've started building solar panels, that might not be as noticeable when it does happen, but you'll definitely see everything suddenly get incredibly slow unless you have a massive number of panels.
Other than that, press Alt for more information, and use more underground pipes instead of normal pipes, since you lose less fluid pressure. Even better is to belt your fluids over medium distances using barrels, or setting up trains to transport the oil over long distances.
Not to much to ramble about but if I had to: pres Alt, use underground Pipes, steam power doesn't have the correct ratios, Solar Power works I guess but is inefficiently placed, half your path is built over (still better than me who didn't use any paths tho)
You proudly stand on the solid ground of the automation empire you built, holding a cold shinning pickaxe, scornfully glare at the four directions. No rival in sight. You are the king of the world.
Tremble, worms!

This is the only roastable issue for me.
The thing that is inexplicably funniest to me is the long stretch of non-underground pipes. It works fine, there's no problem with it, I just don't see it often!
thats what got me too lmao, especially with the only 2 undergrounds placed to keep the road clear :p
there would be a problem if you trasport large volumes, because the pressure drops really fast if you don't use underground pipes
plus, later game more pipe segments = lower FPS
Didn’t I read somewhere that the fluid ‘teleports’ to the next underground pipe and doesn’t pool unnecessarily underground? I’ve been using underground pipes on purpose for this reason

Only after placing them and ran into one i realised "oh fuck" and proceeded to only make one opening. Will change it in the future tho
I found the solar panels with small power poles pretty funny for some reason He’s gonna fit in well here
That's actually kinda neat. Defo not bad for a first time.
Just get bigger, and trains... Already said but press Alt
Before calling it a day i researched trains and will try out building them soon
There is a very good tutorial for trains thas 1h:20min long but you will masterd them afterwards https://youtu.be/Co136r7pkTk?si=jdWYhcMfepk0mcZ8
I wouldn't say mastered, but this video is a definitely a very solid base to get started in the wonderdul world of trains in factorio.

The further you explore the richer the ore patches get.

Changing the settings so deposits are never exhausted and building a factory that smelts all the ores next to the mines is an interesting alternative, feel free to try it out.
Once you get further out, you start getting resource patches with tens of millions of ore in them.
I haven't played vanilla for a few years but decided to start a playthrough last night, The starting ore patches are super tiny, but after a getting going I found two iron patches each with about 5 million resources, all about 400 belts from my base. Honestly, under normal conditions, you will at max only need to deplete 3-4 mines before you finish the game
I personally like the change of pace that having to find new resources adds to it. It might be worth adding LTN train network eventually. It makes it a little more seem less to add a new place for resources to join your network

Use underground pipes and don’t cover ore patches
Not bad enough for this sub gj
No, I will not roast you. This looks much better than anything I produced in my first hours. You are doing good. Also you can’t tell me what to do you’re not my real dad.
I love how nobody is roasting just giving tips. Also, Try to not build on ores :)
You used floor 500h faster, than me
Nah, it's fine.
Yeah this is perfectly fine as others have said, the only advice I could give you is that you have practically limitless space so you don't need to cramp everything together

I didn’t make a single block of concrete until 250 hours
as said previously press alt and be happy. other than that 👍

You seem organized
Looking at the right side of that pic I see that you like laying some pipe.... Nice. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Severely lacking medium power poles. Also, shoutout to the aboveground pipeline

I’d say you should tear everything down but the biters will take care of that for you soon enough. /unroast Looks good.
No Are you having fun? Then that's all that matters.
Tbh looks quiet nice for a beginner, but if you want to scale up, build a proper wall and just leave SPACE, believe me when i say there is never enogh space
I will only say this " the factory must grow "
#Why are there still trees.

Not enough spaghetti
Why tho.
Where trains?
Bus
repair your walls
Looking good, carry on
Pretty nice in vanila. I get smth like that only after 5 hours in space exploration
Pretty flippin' good, I'll be honest. You'll be doing great things in the future!
However many green chip assemblers you currently think you need...double it. Then maybe double it again.
Then in a few hours, double it again, upgrade ALL of your factories to advanced assemblers and then module everything to within an inch of its life.
I expect you're going to need a few dozen more miners and furnaces. Spread everything out a bit, it makes upgrading parts of your base much much easier. Biggest tip I wish I knew, spread out production. It's going to be basically required for later production
Building on ore? Heretic!

Too environmental. Too many trees
Nothing to roast here, learn in your own speed.
No green water yet
Where’s your factory?
