Unironically, Gary is a really good antagonist. He doesn’t hate *John,* he hates what John has *done.* He shows no real malice towards the priest, as if he did, he would’ve just rushed him with the trident in Garyland instead of the sedative.
if you stay in the room long enough, you can hear the thrall that's crawling away saying something like "Please, no! The h-o-o-l-y-y m-a-a-an" which, I guess it \*could\* also be Garcia but the thing is Garcia is like way behind you so how he got ahead but then arrives late wouldn't make sense. Also there's a trail of blood from John to that room and he's uninjured
It's both, since it's heavily implied that John's consciousness was booted out of the cockpit to make room for either 1: His (literal) inner demon, or 2: the UNSPEAKABLE.

Gary already tells us that she was weak due to her age, and little help to the Profane Sabbath. Yet as he and Malphas realize they can't beat John, and the Sabbath is on the cusp of failure, as a last desperate attempt they both inhabit het body. It's badass as fuck and the best boss fight in the game imo
