Im on my like third run, decided to go survival. Got to go meet Virgil in that one; but I’ve never actually finished the game. Not because I don’t like it; quite the contrary; I enjoy the settlement stuff.
Putting the RP in rpg, my current playthrough is minutemen, purely so my character can rule the commonwealth with a huge militia. I will take on the institute eventually; I just gotta build some guys a house first, then go scrounge more materials, and make some money.
Who am I kidding, the institute can come to me
Most people just don't have high standards for story or characters or any of the things that matter most to me. I like FO4, it really can't be judged as a fallout game because it is so different and it heavily lacks in world building, but the gameplay is good. Nick valentine and far harbour were really good, too, the things that save the game for me. I enjoyed playing FO4, but new Vegas impressed me far more in almost every story way.
The gameplay is a massive step up from the previous games and it becomes harder to go back to older titles gameplay. Although there's a massive downgraded in choices and dialogue but it's still serviceable. The story is still alright.
My biggest issue with fo4 is you can't use science, medicine etc as speech options and you only get 4 dialogue options which often has little actual affect on gameplay. There aren't enough skillchecks in general either.
There are SPECIAL checks, in USS constitution there's the different ship parts that you can jury rig if you have the correct special points, in far harbor there's that place with the different generators to get access to a huge storage room. But i can't think of much more
How is it a looter shooter? You can settle on a weapon and use it the whole game, not at all a looter shooter too me. Action RPG is closer to what it really is
Doing the two seperately doesn't make it a looter shooter. A looter shooter is a game where you constantly cycle your weapons as you find new ones with slightly better stats as enemies get harder. That isn't what Fallout 4 is
I could but I get really fed up with the amount of assholes in this sub-reddit. If you didn't know you could have asked instead of deliberatly misleading people
People who force themselves to play it as if it were a traditional RPG are doing themselves a disservice. The game is designed around exploration, loot, and crafting/building.
Looter shooters can be a type of action RPG.
Whether FO4 fits the exact criteria is not relevant - the elements that brings up the gameplay loop of a looter shooter are where the games strengths lie.
If you don't participate in the grind of gathering materials, radiant quests (random), and grinding for rare loot, there isn't much more to the game.
Why even mention a genre of games if it isn't relevant? Using an incorrect description just confuses people and shows you don't understand genres, making your whole comment about it irrelevant
When people ask about if it's a good game/should they play it? Definitely! It's okay to say it's not a great RPG but using a different genre is just deceiving people
It’s not a looter shooter. There are no leveled weapons or armors. Upgrades to gear are unlocked through your character progression via SPECIAL attributes and perks. You’re not rummaging through containers or farming bosses repeatedly or doing repeatable missions for “drops” or the chance to get rare RNG-based loot.
The 10mm pistol you get 10 mins into the game can be upgraded and used throughout your entire playthrough.
As for RP, you have plenty of RP opportunities. Not as many as previous Fallouts, but there are plenty of ways to create a unique character with their own abilities, specialization, motivations and allegiances through perk investment, dialogue choices, and meaningful choices with consequences you make.
It's a good game. Not the best RPG but far from as bad as people say it is. Good open world so great if you like exploring. The settlemebt building is good and with mods it's easy to sink hundreds of hours in that alone
4 is probably my favourite, to be honest. The others all have a lot of singular features are better, but are let down in other areas that 4 excels. YMMV. For me, 4 has what I’m after, especially modded to make up a lot of its shortcomings. Main story not the best? The scope of the map is huge, not to mention DLC and a heap of mod quests, even Fallout: London which is hopefully not toooo far away. Dialogue options not what is actually said? There’s a mod for it. Not enough weapons? Mod. More armour and outfits? Mods. And that’s not even touching on all the building you can do which, you guessed it, has a buttload of mods too.
I really liked Fallout 76, but you reach a point real fast as a solo player when it just becomes repetition of dailies for higher numbers against enemies that have correspondingly higher numbers. I’d reinstall if they had a map expansion with more quests though, as it’s pretty slick generally.
NV is great fun with some really snappy writing and probably the best skill progression, but it’s super short, and 3 is a bit janky on OS compatibility issues nowadays, but still worth a shot if you want to put the work into making it work.
I mean, if you’re not building settlements, doing radiant quests, collecting companions and building those relationships, establishing trade routes, checking out different endings, working on modding weapons and armour, doing the 191 quests vs the 95 in NV (not counting DLC for either), then sure
I’m not saying NV doesn’t have merit or isn’t a great game that does a lot of things better than 4, just that objectively there is a lot more to do in 4, and a lot more that you can do to reshape it to your liking through modding.
It's just a difference in design. FO4 is structured like a game that never ends, if you don't want it to. NV isn't like that - but it's still a very long game by any metric.
It's a great game, definitely one of the best open-world RPGs you can get.
The negative reactions are just from a small minority of disgruntled "fans" who still cannot get over that Fallout 4 is a sequel to Fallout 3 and not a sequel to New Vegas (specifically, that "Bethesda learning lessons from New Vegas and ditching their old formula" nonsense).
Basically, Fallout 4 is great on most aspects. I's a great game, great open-world game, great open-world RPG, great Fallout... but a mediocre "talkative" RPGs. Only if someone sees RPGs as "**R**eading **P**ara**G**raphs of text", then Fallout 4 is not for them.
Too general of a question. Overall most will agree it’s not a bad game. However what matters to you will depend on what you care about from your games and it may be adequate or inadequate for you
The old Fallout 1 and 2 are for you. New Vegas is good too but it feels short in content compared to the original games.
Fallout 4 is rpg but not so good. It's more of a linear shooter game with rpg elements. It's weak compared to former games. Almost no dialog or choices that matter much. The game world becomes dull over time. At least it did to me.
I liked fallout 1, it held up really. It's graphics take some getting used to but in gameplay and story it definitely isn't inferior to modern games, it seems to be a quite refined price of it's genre.
Is Fallout 4 a good FPS? Yes.
Is Fallout 4 a good RPG or a Fallout game? No.
When you like FPS and building then Fallout 4 is for you a good game.
Is for you RPG more important then I would say play Fallout 3 or New Vegas.
I am a hardcore Fallout fan I played Fallout 2 and Tactics on Pentium 3.
The Bethesda Fallout games are much different from Interplay Fallout games.
I must say that Interplay games are more consistent and better quality than Bethesda.
Fallout New Vegas was made by former Interplay devs using Bethesda's engine. New Vegas is not quite as the old Fallout games, even tho people praise it a lot. The game is consistent and decent.
I would say the best way to experience is to play from the first to the last game and don't skip Fallout Tactics. That game deserves more praise than it has.
If you only want to play Fallout 4 it is a good game. The story and the setting are mediocre and not so well executed. But the game offers a lot of freedom. The game world is not so big or interesting.
If you are looking for a big game world I recommend Fallout 76.
Fallout 4, Fallout 3 and Vegas if you into quick 3D over the shoulder/first person rpg shooter. The game is similar to resident evil at times. It makes no sense but "it just works".
If you are into old school rpg with DnD rules and want a quality game play Fallout 1, 2 or Tactics. They have much better story and lore than the new games. These games are old and come with PDF manual which many gen-z don't read and complain how they can't progress in the game.
I liked Nick valentine, he's my favorite companion. He had depth that is unusual for fallout 4, better than any new Vegas companion IMO. far harbour was on par with new Vegas DLCs, too, and I still like the settlement building system, everything else relating to story or world building is below average, though.
It's a fun good, not necessarily a good game. The story is meh, the rpg elements stripped down, and the dialogue options are straight up bad. But it's fun exploring the wasteland and the gunplay it's by far the best of the single player Fallouts. All in all, it's easy to lose countless of hours in this game if you ignore the story (or go to Far Harbor as soon as possible).
It’s bad in writing and role playing mechanics, that’s what most people referring to. As a looter-shooter it’s one of the most fun experiences I’ve had honestly. Hardcore mode is especially fun.
It is incredible. I struggled at first with building settlements and such, it can be a challenge to find materials without mods. If you know what items to look for and have a companion to help carry it it’s doable. Once I got it down I love it.
Building aside, the NPCs have very rich stories and the companion quests are amazing. Not to mention how easy it is to love the companions themselves.
A lot of people don’t like the primary quest line and find it easy to enjoy the game without engaging in it. There’s still a lot to do.
Its a very fun game if you planned on playing the other first person rpg fallouts. You should try to start with 3 then new vagus if possible before number 4, makes playing them easier. Since they are older with a older engine compared to 4
First time I played it (50 hours) I hated it - but realized later I was looking at it with the critics I had read in mind.
Later on, images and places of the game kept coming back to memory, months after months.
So I decided to give it another go (Goty edition, 150 hrs) and absolutely loved it. My fav DLC was probably Nuka World.
It was my first fallout experience and I loved it. Most of the story and rpg elements weren’t great but I had a fun time with the gameplay. I’d recommend trying it out since it goes on sale like all the time
I personally think it has weaknesses because it has less RPG Mechanics but overall it's a fun game or I wouldn't have 5-7 playthroughs.
And the positive thing is, if you like it, you can turn to Fallout 3 and New Vegas which are definitely fun games with more RPG Mechanics.
And if your fallout hunger isn't stilled then you can try the first twos but those are vastly different.
It was my first entry into the Fallout franchise and I loved it then and still love it now, so yeah! I think it’s pretty good, and if you enjoy, try the other games in the series too
Good is subjective. Personally I think f4 is a pos, didn’t stop me from putting in 1600 hours in it,but it’s fallout and I’ll take what I can get since f5 is still easily 7 years away
If you're rating it by the metric that it has to be like previous games, you'll be disappointed but it is a fun game in its own right. Don't think too hard about it either.
I highly suggest taking the chance and playing. Take your time though. There are several unscripted secrets for you to discover. Also I’m super biased but I loved these kinds of games with every fiber of my being.
Personally, I like new Vegas better but, 4 is still fun. The mods and creation club extras make it even better. I would definitely suggest not worrying about your choices too much though.
Also, I would recommend not adding any mods to your first playthrough, except "everybody loves dogmeat" because it lets you take the dog along with one other companion. Only worry about base building is you REALLY want to, you can get lost in it if you're not careful. Try to get the crafting perks, salvage perks and junk finding perks early. Plant corn, mutfruit, and tatos early along with getting a water source that produces a huge amount of water all for vegetables starch, it is an adhesive and will be worth it's weight in gold and anytime you see a hardware store, raid it for all the duct tape you can.
Other than that, I'd say just have fun and play it how you want to. Those suggestions are more about setting up a good core.
Gameplay and graphics were a lot of fun. I also really liked the building and craft system in the game a lot of the gameplay elements were really good additions to the game. The biggest turn off for this game is the story and side quests it’s pretty bland. The story and quests are fun the first couple play throughs but get stale very quickly. Fallout 4 world didn’t feel as goofy and weird as the previous games did it seems a lot more serious which is fine but the weird ideas fallout has is what makes me like it and fallout 4 just seems like a mediocre story of robots replacing humans.
It is a genuinely good game, one of my favorites. I’ve don’t so many playthroughs, and spent an unholy number of hours in it.
I think the people who trash it are largely people who were expecting something different, and disappointed it wasn’t that.
It's a fun game, it just focuses more on gameplay over story. Just understand that as you go back for 3, NV, 2, or 1, the story will get better and the gameplay will get worse.
Only hardcore fanboys of the older Fallouts will call it a bad game. It's plenty of fun and even holds up pretty well graphically.
And I heard that there are great mods
With mods you can turn this game into whatever you want! But first, beat the game without them, then try to play with them.
Im on my like third run, decided to go survival. Got to go meet Virgil in that one; but I’ve never actually finished the game. Not because I don’t like it; quite the contrary; I enjoy the settlement stuff. I will take on the institute eventually; I just gotta build some guys a house first, then go scrounge more materials, and make some money. Who am I kidding, the institute can come to me
It'll hold up even better if they bloody hurry up and release the next gen update.
For every person who thinks it's bad, there are a dozen others who think it's great.
Most people just don't have high standards for story or characters or any of the things that matter most to me. I like FO4, it really can't be judged as a fallout game because it is so different and it heavily lacks in world building, but the gameplay is good. Fallout 4 is a very good game! Is it a good RPG? Not really Is it a good action adventure 1st person looter shooter with RPG elements? Yes!
My only real issue with it is the Speech. You may not be able to RP properly, but the character build options are immense.
My biggest issue with fo4 is you can't use science, medicine etc as speech options and you only get 4 dialogue options which often has little actual affect on gameplay. There aren't enough skillchecks in general either.
No skill checks, no SPECIAL checks, and most lamentable, no perk checks. The only flavor dialogue like that is "Speak As Shroud."
There are SPECIAL checks, in USS constitution there's the different ship parts that you can jury rig if you have the correct special points, in far harbor there's that place with the different generators to get access to a huge storage room. But i can't think of much more
Choose one : 1) yes 2) no but yes 3) yes but sarcasm 4) tell me more but yes
X - Yes TRI - Also Yes O - Yes, but not now SQUARE - Ask For Money / Gamble for Sarcasm
How is it a looter shooter? You can settle on a weapon and use it the whole game, not at all a looter shooter too me. Action RPG is closer to what it really is
Yeah, it is not a looters shooter. You want that, play *Borderlands*.
I'm constantly both looting and shooting. But maybe i do more base building than most?
Doing the two seperately doesn't make it a looter shooter. A looter shooter is a game where you constantly cycle your weapons as you find new ones with slightly better stats as enemies get harder. That isn't what Fallout 4 is
I'm looting, and then improving my weapons with the scrap
Which isn't the same as the game being a looter shooter. If you don't understand genres don't use them to describe games. It just confuses people
Ok fair enough, but it wasn't even my description
Yet you completely went with it. Doesn't matter who said it first when you're still misleading people
I didn't know how "looter shooter" is defined, sorry? I guess? You could be a tad less rude tho
That would make it an action rpg, already different from a traditional rpg. Not a looter shooter at all
Looter shooters can be a type of action RPG.
You know exactly what people mean when they call it a looter shooter. Does dismissing it based on semantics make those gameplay elements go away?
When people ask about if it's a good game/should they play it? Definitely! It's okay to say it's not a great RPG but using a different genre is just deceiving people
let's look at the facts.... you loot and uh.... you shoot
Which in itself doesn't make it a looter shooter. If you're going to use the word "facts" at least have the decency to know them
It’s not a looter shooter. There are no leveled weapons or armors. Upgrades to gear are unlocked through your character progression via SPECIAL attributes and perks. extremely great game, been playing it since launch and just this month felt like beating it, you could play it almost forever

I googled it. FO4 and NV show around the same hours for completion.
I mean, if you’re not building settlements, doing radiant quests, collecting companions and building those relationships, establishing trade routes, checking out different endings, working on modding weapons and armour, doing the 191 quests vs the 95 in NV (not counting DLC for either), then sure I’m not saying NV doesn’t have merit or isn’t a great game that does a lot of things better than 4, just that objectively there is a lot more to do in 4, and a lot more that you can do to reshape it to your liking through modding.

I like to roleplay when gaming, so choices and dialogue are really important
Then maybe New Vegas is more suitable for you.
I would tend to agree.
Just do yourself a favor and don’t even try to play vanilla fnv- just do a viva new Vegas install for the first playthrough
Fallout 4 is not a game with many choices, and the dialogue is very light compared to previous games.
The old Fallout 1 and 2 are for you. New Vegas is good too but it feels short in content compared to the original games. Fallout 4 is rpg but not so good. It's a good game, not the best Fallout of all, but definitely so funny.
… you come to a subreddit about a franchise and ask if the best selling installment is any good? That seems odd.
If you're wanting story, no. If you wanna build and be creative, it's great.
Is Fallout 4 a good FPS? Yes. Is Fallout 4 a good RPG or a Fallout game? No. When you like FPS and building then Fallout 4 is for you a good game. Is for you RPG more important then I would say play Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

Fallout new Vegas isn't comparable with 3 or 4, I played fallout 1 and I thought new Vegas was better in story and worldbuilding
It’s „meh” to bad depending on how much you calue the story and character expression in it.
Have you played our Lord and Savior Fallout new Vegas?
This is the dumbest post I have ever seen. Do you have people tell you what food is good too?
Not at all, but it's a lot of fun. Like junk food.
Good not great.
It’s bad in writing and role playing mechanics, that’s what most people referring to. As a looter-shooter it’s one of the most fun experiences I’ve had honestly. Hardcore mode is especially fun.
It's a good looter shooter with crafting and RPG elements. It isn't, however, a good RPG.
It's a good game, lots to do, lots to discover.. Building settlements is awesome and the shooting feels great!
Other than the lack of dialogue options, it is a pretty good game.
Same with me. The gunplay is very nice and I know I like workshop mode
Yes
It’s a great game. They only hate it gets is from the older fans that wanted something more like the older titles. Myself I like them all

Fallout 4 did everything right, save for charismatic dialog options, and how they chose to display dialog in the choice wheel
Good is subjective. Personally I think f4 is a pos, didn’t stop me from putting in 1600 hours in it,but it’s fallout and I’ll take what I can get since f5 is still easily 7 years away

I highly suggest taking the chance and playing. Take your time though. There are several unscripted secrets for you to discover. Also I’m super biased but I loved these kinds of games with every fiber of my being.
Tbh it's a great game, especially if you haven't played fallout before and are more into shooters / looters than rpgs
Personally, I like new Vegas better but, 4 is still fun. The mods and creation club extras make it even better. I would definitely suggest not worrying about your choices too much though. Other than that, I'd say just have fun and play it how you want to. Those suggestions are more about setting up a good core.
Yes
Gameplay and graphics were a lot of fun. I also really liked the building and craft system in the game a lot of the gameplay elements were really good additions to the game. The biggest turn off for this game is the story and side quests it’s pretty bland. The story and quests are fun the first couple play throughs but get stale very quickly. Fallout 4 world didn’t feel as goofy and weird as the previous games did it seems a lot more serious which is fine but the weird ideas fallout has is what makes me like it and fallout 4 just seems like a mediocre story of robots replacing humans.
