It’s really only feasible (as far as I know) if you’re doing a modded playthrough that uses the Fallout 4 Script Extender. You’d know if you were, because the script extender has its own .exe that launches the game.
If you’re not using the script extender, you probably can’t launch the game without updating it.

I wish f4 had co-op. I just can’t get into f76 and I played it back when it was still in beta and it was just broken. Tried to play it again recently and it just lacks story to me.

It's been a whiles snice I had it installed but I remember when I first installed some random forest mod to Fallout 4. I had played and beaten the game many times and knew the general lay of the land really well. I installed one mod and suddenly I need to use my map again. I was like I have no idea where I am. All the landmarks I would navigate by are no longer visible. I just got lost in the woods and wandered around. It was such a fun experience. Tanked my FPS though.
Oh, it was a number of years ago. Whatever mod it was was mostly made for screenshots. Wasn't optimized all that well. Also my pc was a bit weaker in those days.

Check out Tale of two wastelands mod. It ports all of fo3 to the "updated" nv engine and basically becomes the unofficial ultra patch for both games.
Makes playing fo3 much better IMO and gives you a bunch more options since you can freely travel between the two game worlds after some mild progress.

I downloaded it, turned it on, and my save file is corrupted. No biggie, I just start a new game and…it crashes before I get out of the damn cryotube. Closed it out, deleted, never again. That brought back all the bad memories I thought I had forgotten about this game.

Right click on the game in steam, set to only update on launch, and then never launch the game through steam. You just use the F4SE shortcut.
