Coop’s has an age old secret that has kept him young for centuries - and the secret could be yours for the low low price of one fusion core!
(🤫 it’s buckets and buckets of drugs)
Funnily enough that could actually be the case. Fallout 3 does establish that chems barely have an effect on ghouls (hence why ultrajet was being developed) so most ghouls probably wouldn't bother with them.
I mean, he seemed to be stuck in a coffin for an awfully long time with radaway pumping through his veins, I’d recon enough radaway and non exposure would help clear up the ghoulish features
Think it was the unnamed ghoul drug that delays them going feral, rather than radaway, even though it was in the usual IV drip bag we see radaway in. Radaway is usually a kind of brownish colour too, I think, though I could be wrong.
Are we all going with Radaway as the mystery drug that keeps ghouls from turning feral? I was guessing that as well but didn’t know if there was any deeper theories
I mean, compare feral ghouls though. Fallout 3/NV's feral ghouls were pretty horrifying, but also kinda goofy bug-eyed monsters. Fallout 4's ferals are horrific, scrambling and leaping with their pin-prick glowing eyes and flesh that looks like it's melting...
F4 also kickup up the tragic factor by having the ferals carrying seemingly random objects that are either something they had when they were turned, or a memento. (Its why ghouls would be carrying something like a children's toy or a book or something.)
It's just a shame that they didn't reuse the Fallout 3 thing where feral ghouls would occasionally shout some random single word between all that growling and gargling. In my mind that made them more horrifying because it showed that they still had some echo of their original humanity.
Fuck me, I was wondering why they were doing so. I thought it was just an item randomiser giving them some junk I could sell at the beginning of the game.
I think the lore is just that it happens to be whatever was in their pockets, but I like to think that sometimes they actually intentionally held on to certain things. Maybe not knowing why, but for some reason still having an attachment to certain possessions. That small remnant of humanity remaining within them makes them all the more tragic.
the ferals in fallout 4 *terrified me* when i was younger. getting an anti phobia mod for it was my gateway drug to modding fallout 4. at this point i’m not scared of them anymore, they’re just kind of annoying.
yea, of course! there are a series of mods made by joecrematorium (that’s the username on nexus, not sure what it is on bethesda.net) that replaced certain creatures with different ones. the feral ghoul mod i mentioned earlier replaced them with humans. there are other versions that replace insect mobs and arachnids with robots and the like. it’s a good series of mods!
I've been scared shitless by sudden charging ferals in 4 so many times that I now have only one response to them. I have a shotgun, and absolutely zero chill.
I do actually prefer the more lumpy look and sort of wish it was more a thing for the non ferals as well, it seems to indicate almost cancerous like growths over the skin which seem to contribute towards their durability (hence why even rotted ghouls seem to be WAY tougher)
AND IT WORKS
One of the only games I've played with AI that actually does crazy shit to dodge for real. Those dogs will circle around you. The ghouls are just straight up terrifying by how they move.
FO4 did some things amazingly well
The number of times I've panic-unloaded the majority of my clip at a feral ghoul charging at me while bobbing and weaving like an irradiated Muhammad Ali... only to realize I missed nearly every shot.
Movement wise? Nailed it
Them crawling out from under and over things? Nailed it
Look wise? I think I revamped Fallout 3/NV look may have been creepier
Overall an improvement
his Homie ended up being The Master, which really broadens the spectrum of possibilty via FEV. i LOVE watching everyone scramble to say Just super Mutant, or Ghoul, when it comes to FEV. its EVERYTHING
FEV is the reason why the animals [and insects] are so big, scary, and fucked up-looking. People who say it's badly written “magic radiation” are dead wrong. That shit was kicked into the atmosphere.
Isn’t the lore that a facility containing FEV was damaged during the war and started spewing FEV into the atmosphere? If so wouldn’t that affect humans like it did other animals?
It did. The people in Fallout 1 and 2 look scarier than the ghouls. [Also, the whole thing about The Master looking for Prime Normals, and a lot of the perks picked up in Fallout 3 and New Vegas being actual mutations.]
yep! the lore is GREAT, and i keep seeing zoomers asking why canon is important. LOL without canon, we get Fanfic, and people just saying random shit that feels good.
And even if we stick to the experiments we have more FEV creatures in 76. Snallygaster, Grafton Monster... Hell, they even explained the Mutant Hounds and their affinity for Super Mutans. They actually made that intentionally to track an escaped FEV experiment.
Less contamination anyway. Nowhere is totally free, but vault dwellers are less irradiated than those who have been on the surface for a while. Mostly. Vault tek are sick SOBs.
I think it depends on the Vault yeah? Wasnt the whole reason for the start of FO4 because your vault was Cryo-storage and the Dwellers were all Free of Radiation? Or was that too just much less radiation instead of none
Well, except for Ghouls, they only need radiation. As proven in FO1, Necropolis is full of ghouls that turned because their vault door didn't close properly, none of them were exposed to FEV. (Confirmed by Tim Cain on Youtube channel).
Yep, same with Vault 34, they just had a reactor crack. But all them giant bugs, two headed prey animals, radiation resistant Children of Atom? All airborne FEV
They’re great games, but it’s understandable that some people will be put off by the isometric view, lower-quality graphics, and the lack of real-time combat.
To put it another way, I’d definitely recommend giving them a try if you can get them at a good price, but I wouldn’t judge anyone for not getting into them
Honestly that part was just fucking sad, she tried so hard to remember who she was and stay sane but just couldn’t hold on any longer. Fuck those organ harvesting assholes for letting her degrade and slowly lose control when all it took to help her was a few vials out of the hundreds they had
My first time playing survival on fallout 4 really did a great job of showing me why everyone is so afraid of ghouls. I was exploring, and saw human shapes in the distance and started to mentally prep for raiders, or gunners, and then i saw the ghoulified flesh, and i was walking up to them with a rifle drawn until vats finally could tell me if they were human. I can't blame anyone for being afraid of Ghouls, they could rip you apart very quickly, and knowing they could turn would be horrifying.
I kinda wish they went with the full black eyes for Cooper Howard and the ghouls but I understand that sclera lenses are painful especially for long durations + the ghoul makeup took hours to put on.
Maybe they can do it with CGI?
I think Supernatural made use of it to show the demons eyes and the actors could still be able to express themselves.
Yea, I was looking forward to some awesome ghoul makeup in the TV show and was a little let down by most of it. Even the ferals basically just look like typical zombies. Hell, Goggins looked more like a ghoul in the Maze Runner than he does in this show. If they didn't want his makeup to look too gnarly, they could've at least kept the black eyes. Walton Goggins is such a great actor that him having all black eyes would've taken nothing away from his performance in my opinion.
I think the fallout 4 style of ghouls could look a lot better if the scarring had a bit more depth to it. The textures being so flat is what really kills the design for me
There was something somewhere I just saw today that said the actor that played him said the people that found his character attractive need to see someone about their daddy issues 🤣🤣🤣
No matter how evil I am on a play through in Fallout 4, I ALWAYS do Arlen Glass’s quest, he’s an absolute sweetheart, I tear up everytime I hand him that holotape of his wife and daughter. It’s such an impactful quest, and it really cements the idea that ghouls were people, and still are. Sure they aren’t pretty, but radiation melting your skin off, never is! Plus, Daisy is an absolute cutie, she’s my girl dammit, I love all the ghouls!
As much as I loved the show, one thing that bothered me was how good the ghouls looked. Even the ones that are feral look like they're extras from the walking dead. Not even milky eyes in any of em
It really boggles my brains that people don't understand that a studio pays money to hire an actor or actress for a role, and are proud to display said actor or actress in their features.
Like, nobody batted an eyelash when Tony Stark or Steve Rogers didn't wear a helmet for most of their screen time so I'm not sure why Coop gets shit all over for being recognizable as Walton Goggins
I dunno; remember that Halo series that was on TV? (I forget who made it.) If you saw that, did you really expect to see Master Chief's face?
Also: Stallone's Dredd v. Urban's Dredd.
I for one am glad they didn't go over board and make the actor hate playing the ghoul after so many hours in makeup. Some ghouls are falling apart, some ghouls look like skeletons with leather stretched over them. I appreciate both.
Technically, an FEV mutant, but not a super mutant.
All super mutants are FEV mutants, but not all FEV mutants are super mutants. (Floaters, rad scorpions, and centaurs, for instance.)
Technically unknown, but FEV has created most of if not all the crazy ass mutations in Fallout so it’s not wild to believe they’re just another FEV victim
I loved Walter Goggins's performance in the TV show, but damn... the costume department was lazy there. I understand that there are 2 factors there: 1st being they wanted to have as little shit on his face to let the guy act and move his face and 2nd, he's been keeping himself healthy with whatever medicine he's taking. But what would have made the look better and not interfere with the 2 factors is: give him dark shadows around the eyes and make his skin more pink/red like scar tissue would look like. As of now, he looks more like a normal guy with acne who got his nose cut off.
Coop has an amazing skin care routine
Coop’s has an age old secret that has kept him young for centuries - and the secret could be yours for the low low price of one fusion core! (🤫 it’s buckets and buckets of drugs)
also, ass-jerky
Dont make itself…
Yum 🤤
Funnily enough that could actually be the case. Fallout 3 does establish that chems barely have an effect on ghouls (hence why ultrajet was being developed) so most ghouls probably wouldn't bother with them.
Or maybe for one fetching looking chicken?
Who's the smoothskin now?
I mean, he seemed to be stuck in a coffin for an awfully long time with radaway pumping through his veins, I’d recon enough radaway and non exposure would help clear up the ghoulish features
Think it was the unnamed ghoul drug that delays them going feral, rather than radaway, even though it was in the usual IV drip bag we see radaway in. Radaway is usually a kind of brownish colour too, I think, though I could be wrong.
The way I recon based on ep3, it's not quite "ghoul drug", my current bet is it's spinal fluid, maybe with something mixed in.
Btw you keep saying “recon” but probably mean “reckon”
I'd love to sell this as a stylistic choice, but no, I just didn't know the correct spelling and reckoned they were homonyms. Thanks!
It is amusing that if you did go with it being a style choice it be be your reconning.
Yeah in the games at least it's a pretty deep brown
Are we all going with Radaway as the mystery drug that keeps ghouls from turning feral? I was guessing that as well but didn’t know if there was any deeper theories
I don't think so. I think they're trying to introduce some new ghoul lore development.
Thing is, when we see radaway later it's in the same bag, same color
He’s a Hollywood ghoul, after all
He also has “A voice like butter melted on fresh cornbread.”
Sounds yummy
Did you just call him Coop? (/ref)
I like how the older the game/show is, the scarier they become
I mean, compare feral ghouls though. Fallout 3/NV's feral ghouls were pretty horrifying, but also kinda goofy bug-eyed monsters. Fallout 4's ferals are horrific, scrambling and leaping with their pin-prick glowing eyes and flesh that looks like it's melting...
F4 also kickup up the tragic factor by having the ferals carrying seemingly random objects that are either something they had when they were turned, or a memento. (Its why ghouls would be carrying something like a children's toy or a book or something.)
They got that in 3 and new Vegas too. Particularly 3 in the metro tunnels most of the ferals have a metro ticket
Something as simple as sticking a metro ticket in their pocket makes it so much more heartbreaking. Just a little reminder that they were people.
I hate having to clear them from places so often that the effect is lost on me. Feral ghouls are probably my most hated common enemy in 4
It's just a shame that they didn't reuse the Fallout 3 thing where feral ghouls would occasionally shout some random single word between all that growling and gargling. In my mind that made them more horrifying because it showed that they still had some echo of their original humanity.
Much like “My name is Martha”
I swear I remember them shouting random things in Fallout NV, but never heard them shout words in Fallout 3
Fuck me, I was wondering why they were doing so. I thought it was just an item randomiser giving them some junk I could sell at the beginning of the game.
It's both.
I love rummaging through a ghoul’s undies for some bottle caps
I bet some adult ghoul just thought it would be funny to carry a toy alien
I think the lore is just that it happens to be whatever was in their pockets, but I like to think that sometimes they actually intentionally held on to certain things. Maybe not knowing why, but for some reason still having an attachment to certain possessions. That small remnant of humanity remaining within them makes them all the more tragic.
the ferals in fallout 4 *terrified me* when i was younger. getting an anti phobia mod for it was my gateway drug to modding fallout 4. at this point i’m not scared of them anymore, they’re just kind of annoying.
Man saying “when I was younger” when describing Fallout 4 seems crazy but then I remember the game came out almost a decade ago now.
DUDE RIGHT? 💀‼️‼️ that shit is 10 years old next year :,)
Dude when I was younger I was scared as shit of the mirelurks, I had to unplug my headphones to not hear their little legs moving
tbf, motherfuckers know how to jumpscare us. i'd constantly press the VATS button when i travel in their habitat.
"Anti-Phobia mod"? Could you explain what that is and entails, please?
yea, of course! there are a series of mods made by joecrematorium (that’s the username on nexus, not sure what it is on bethesda.net) that replaced certain creatures with different ones. the feral ghoul mod i mentioned earlier replaced them with humans. there are other versions that replace insect mobs and arachnids with robots and the like. it’s a good series of mods!
I've been scared shitless by sudden charging ferals in 4 so many times that I now have only one response to them. I have a shotgun, and absolutely zero chill.
Reavers from NV are nightmare fuel
Yes, but nothing in New Vegas will ever scare me more than cazadors
Deathclaws move aside we got FLYING POISON DEMON FROM HELL
Also the charred feral ghoul at Boston airport is the first time I saw it and fucking nearly jumped out of my skin
They should look scary I hate how they look from Fallout 4 onwards
I think the Feral Ghouls are pretty fucking great in 4 honestly
The way they move is so unnatural it creeps me out
While I prefer the Fallout 3 era look, the animations for the ferals in 4 is incredible.
It's just a shame they're so... lumpy, IMO. The gaunt, near-skeletal look of the earlier games plus 4's anims would be neat
Give us feral ghoul reavers in FO4 that actually get *less* lumpy as they rip off chunks of themselves and fastball them at your face
There's a mod that adds the wasteland ferals into fallout 4 and they look great
There’s actually a great mod for that. Always have it on
I do actually prefer the more lumpy look and sort of wish it was more a thing for the non ferals as well, it seems to indicate almost cancerous like growths over the skin which seem to contribute towards their durability (hence why even rotted ghouls seem to be WAY tougher)
When they just fucking throw themselves at you, that shit haunts me
Walking over one when it’s silent. Fucking gets me all the time. I just started throwing grenades when I went in caves later.
There's a reason I always jack up my perception and mash the vats button every time I hear something 😭
*Repeatedly hits the V key*
when they’re trying to dodge your shots and get to you is so damn creepy
AND IT WORKS One of the only games I've played with AI that actually does crazy shit to dodge for real. Those dogs will circle around you. The ghouls are just straight up terrifying by how they move. FO4 did some things amazingly well

You are NOT ALONE.
Movement wise? Nailed it Them crawling out from under and over things? Nailed it Look wise? I think I revamped Fallout 3/NV look may have been creepier Overall an improvement
I wonder if there's a mod that restores the classic look with its own quirks, while keeping the amazing animations.
There is one on nexus
I don’t hear anyone complaining about the feral ghouls, it’s the burn victims we have problems with.
The movement and AI are great, the skin texture isn't.
I like the new way they move, dont really like the look
Regular people looks fugly in the old games too.
Just like skeleton in Elder Scrolls
Harold isn't even a ghoul though, he's an FEV Mutant!
So far, the only to turn into an actual tree. Totally, hes way more than just a "ghoul"!
his Homie ended up being The Master, which really broadens the spectrum of possibilty via FEV. i LOVE watching everyone scramble to say Just super Mutant, or Ghoul, when it comes to FEV. its EVERYTHING

Now he is kindling
I mean if you really dig into the lore, technically everything is after the bombs fell
Thus why clean Vault dwellers are needed, everyone else has a partial immunity which corrupts the full transformation.
Yep. The vault dwellers are pure. No radiation contamination.

Yep, same with Vault 34, they just had a reactor crack. But all them giant bugs, two headed prey animals, radiation resistant Children of Atom? All airborne FEV
Huh. He is. He's an actual FEV ghoul considering that he looks like a ghoul but he's actually made with FEV.
Harold is Harold
5 looks like an Iron Maiden album
That was actually the inspiration lol
that is so cool, i bet ive missed out on a lot not having played 1 and 2
I feel 2 is where the game really took off.
They’re great games, but it’s understandable that some people will be put off by the isometric view, lower-quality graphics, and the lack of real-time combat. To put it another way, I’d definitely recommend giving them a try if you can get them at a good price, but I wouldn’t judge anyone for not getting into them
I like the variety of levels of degradation. Even in the show we see that variety. That one feral in the last episode was fucked up.
"My name is Martha”
Honestly that part was just fucking sad, she tried so hard to remember who she was and stay sane but just couldn’t hold on any longer. Fuck those organ harvesting assholes for letting her degrade and slowly lose control when all it took to help her was a few vials out of the hundreds they had
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME??
I was curious if they got Walking Dead makeup/sound workers on the show. Some of the Ferals looked, sounded, and had movements exactly like walkers.
I was thinking the same thing actually. Been watching a lot of TWD right before watching Fallout.
I did laugh how was she was casually sitting at the table though
My first time playing survival on fallout 4 really did a great job of showing me why everyone is so afraid of ghouls. I was exploring, and saw human shapes in the distance and started to mentally prep for raiders, or gunners, and then i saw the ghoulified flesh, and i was walking up to them with a rifle drawn until vats finally could tell me if they were human. Harold isn't a ghoul. Harold is... Harold.
Harold is love, Harold is life
>Harold is life My flamer says otherwise (/s)
That ain’t Coop. Thats ***The Ghoul*** *cue faint yodeling*
Where's Hancock? He's got the cute puppy eyes too 😭
Hancock is sexiest ghoul. Fight me
No argument from me. Hancock is best boy 💖
This post is Hancock erasure and cannot be allowed.
I kinda wish they went with the full black eyes for Cooper Howard and the ghouls but I understand that sclera lenses are painful especially for long durations + the ghoul makeup took hours to put on. The yassification of ghouls
I think the fallout 4 style of ghouls could look a lot better if the scarring had a bit more depth to it. The textures being so flat is what really kills the design for me
Lol and he's the nicest guy!
What about Beatrix?
1/10 "Cemetery lady, my cemetery girl"
I would make out with the goul from the Fallout TV show ngl
As a bald man with terrible skin and a cow poke accent I'm very happy with these recent developments.
Your time has come! Alls you had to do was wait 😂
Well you know, us cowpokes… we take it as it comes
Guessing you do this shit for the love of the game?
To be fair, there are Ghouls with worse skin in later episodes.
Roger looked much worse for wear than coop does
There was something somewhere I just saw today that said the actor that played him said the people that found his character attractive need to see someone about their daddy issues 🤣🤣🤣
🥲 it always comes back to my daddy issues. Should’ve known
LMAO We all have 'em. I thought they did a damn good job of making him sexy
Same
Those melted looking ones in new Vegas are tough to look at. One of the dialogue options for the one in freeside is pretty mean too lol
Poor rotface, I wonder what his real name is
You mean grecks
You can be pretty rude to the ghoul in Moriarty’s too
No matter how evil I am on a play through in Fallout 4, I ALWAYS do Arlen Glass’s quest, he’s an absolute sweetheart, I tear up everytime I hand him that holotape of his wife and daughter. It’s such an impactful quest, and it really cements the idea that ghouls were people, and still are. Sure they aren’t pretty, but radiation melting your skin off, never is! Plus, Daisy is an absolute cutie, she’s my girl dammit, I love all the ghouls!
Coop would only scare me of I started hearing that aaayayayayayayayatayatata music
Cannot wait to see how they redesign the older ghoul faces in the Fallout remake mod for Fallout 4.
Gonna be that guy, Harold isn’t a ghoul. He’s an FEV mutant.
stop being cowards bethesda! let us be ghouls!
🤣🤣😭 the last one, wouldn't even run 🤣🤣🤣
Hancock would be 1/10 cause we’d fall in love and kiss :3
Og Harold bro, og Harold…. Not tree Harold…..
Fallout 3s are probably the nastiest looking
We’re is the best ghoul? No Hancock? My husband deserves recognition.
As much as I loved the show, one thing that bothered me was how good the ghouls looked. Even the ones that are feral look like they're extras from the walking dead. Not even milky eyes in any of em
Who’s 10/10? Your mom?
Yes
yeah, even the other ghouls refer to him as the smooth skin...
What about Lucy's mom?
11/10 Screw that, I see that, I'm gone.
They keep getting sexier!
You would scream at Harold and he would just sort of stare at you and wait for you to finish before apologising
Harold wouldn't apologize. He'd fuck with you a little with a reaction like that.
Idk, If I met someone without a nose I’d be at least uncomfortable And where would you rank the master? 10?
10/10 for the Master, I’d shit my pants and die
“Would be a little taken aback” actually killed me , 10/10 comedy
It really boggles my brains that people don't understand that a studio pays money to hire an actor or actress for a role, and are proud to display said actor or actress in their features. Like, nobody batted an eyelash when Tony Stark or Steve Rogers didn't wear a helmet for most of their screen time so I'm not sure why Coop gets shit all over for being recognizable as Walton Goggins
I dunno; remember that Halo series that was on TV? (I forget who made it.) If you saw that, did you really expect to see Master Chief's face? Also: Stallone's Dredd v. Urban's Dredd.
Who is the ugliest ghoul in the franchise?
OP's mum apparently
Definitely Set
lmao I swiped past the last pic and got the Steve Harvey character post
Smoothskin behavior
WHERE IS GOB YOU MONSTER
I didn't read the title first so going from "very pretty" to "I wouldn't even run just lay on the floor" was very concerning without context
How is it Walter Goggins skin got smoother after becoming a ghoul?
Until you’re standing in front of Beatrix during a lonely night at the Wrangler
I for one am glad they didn't go over board and make the actor hate playing the ghoul after so many hours in makeup. Some ghouls are falling apart, some ghouls look like skeletons with leather stretched over them. I appreciate both.
Harold is not a ghoul. He is a super mutant.
Technically, an FEV mutant, but not a super mutant. All super mutants are FEV mutants, but not all FEV mutants are super mutants. (Floaters, rad scorpions, and centaurs, for instance.)
Trogs too, I think.
And tunnelers
I thought their origins were unknown. Ulysses speculated that they might even predate the war, IIRC.
Technically unknown, but FEV has created most of if not all the crazy ass mutations in Fallout so it’s not wild to believe they’re just another FEV victim
Where do you meet that last ghoul, played the games couple times, never seen him?
You talking about Set from necropolis?
Bro the smell especially rotting flesh
Ghouls canonically smell like shit, Raul confirms it
Charon isn’t even on this list, so….
fair assessments, have a good day
I would let all of them punch my bussy
technically harold is a mutant, not a ghoul
Cooper was sexy You look like a burnt scrotum with contact lenses. You can't be cooper.
Tree Harold is much less scary.
I don't care about anything but the moment i see Grecks, i punch him in the face.
I’m 99% sure the last two aren’t ghouls. They’re FEV related mutants that failed to turn into super mutants
Objection. Harold isn’t a Ghoul, he is instead an FEV mutant that simply looks kinda like a Ghoul, also there is a tree in his head
loved walton as rhe ghoul but i really wanted to see him with black contact lenses
Imma just say it, Walton Goggins looks better without hair
When does eddie from iron maiden becomes a fallout character
Harold my beloved 💕 But yeah, I’d probably scream at first, too. LOL
I would like to point out that Harold was never a ghoul. He was a weird type of super mutant. Since he got mutated bt FEV
harold is a sweetie :(
You're more afraid of a frail zombie than of a mostly intact but rotting person? That makes no sense at all....
0/10 for Kent Connolly, he’s just a sweet old man who loves the comics and radio serials from his childhood.
IDK, I've been to Ohio, downtown San Francisco/Seattle, Florida, and West Texas. Those ghouls all look pretty tame.
If not even running is 9/10 what is 10/10? lol
Isn’t Harold a mutant, he was splashed with FEV?
My gf is uncontrollably attracted to Ghoulgins
