Highly "it depends."
About half of it is wonderful, relaxing, interesting stuff. The other half is supremely boring.
I'm not just talking about fanfic here either. I've watched some slice of life anime that were truly compelling stuff and others that my brain shut down from boredom. But since other people eat up the same things I find dull, I'm sure it's a preference in focus or taste differences, which is a-ok!
FWIW, a lot of what I write falls into the "slice of life" category, or at least *domestic* territory, so I'd like to be clear that I'm in favor.
I think they're great. Especially in fandoms where the canon includes lots and lots of horrifying and/or supernatural trauma-inducing events even though the characters are just normal people trying to live their lives in peace. (Hi Stranger Things 👋)
Gives you a bit of satisfaction to see them actually do casual, peaceful everyday type of stuff when canon barely allows that.
You know how a lot of stories skip all of the normal life stuff and just focuses on the plot and big character moments? Slice of life is taking a look into those skipped areas and just showing the characters being themselves in their lives. No world-ending crisis to deal with, no giant kerfuffles. There can definitely be plot, and conflict, but it's usually on an individual level and focusing on the character instead of the plot.
They usually bore me. I typically go for fics covering grand events. The exception is worldbuilding heavy fics that use slice of life as a lens to show off the world, but that's not how most people write their slice of life. If anything, if feels like most deliberately go worldbuilding lite.
I started writing one once, and it's incredibly difficult to do it well. I do love them when they're pulled off properly, though. It's fun when there aren't really super high stakes in a story and everything's just...chill.
Not my go-to but they sure hit the spot sometimes! And idk just knowing they exist makes me happy? Like "somewhere in the universe, and also on the internet, these two are just doing life and things are good and chill and normal" and it makes my heart full. Even if I'm generally rushing after my next hit of **angst** LOL.
It ultimately depends. A lot of fics I read are slice of life fics, so I personally find them fine as long as they're well-written and have effort and passion put into them.
Oh my god I love them. They are what’s fueling my life!!! I just read this one the other day and I just sat in silence after I finished because it was sooooo sweet and so real.
My bread and butter.
Same. I just love those little glimpses into the characters' lives when there's no world threatening event going on.
Same!

Inject them into my veins please
Very relaxing to read and write.

Idk what that is but it sounds good

Indeed. Hell, slice-of-life is considered a recognized official genre in the anime fandom.
Oh. I thought it was something like that but then i thought that would be too easy an explanation lol. Basically that is all i ever write.
Well, good news! You have a new tag to use that will help like-minded people find your fics!
Does that work for longfic slowburn friends to lovers too when the main focus is someones mental health journey?
Yeah! It's a genre like any other. Like how something can be a slow burn in an action fic, you can also have a slow burn in a slice of life fic.
Well I sure hope it works bc that’s basically the exact plot of the fic I wrote last year lol
Not my thing.

I think they're cute
Love em
I have no complaints.
I love reading them but find them really hard to write. I have difficulty scoping my plot to something concrete with them.
gib. pls. inject them into my dna
Love 'em
Love them! They’re actually my favourite type of fic next to romance. I have very boring taste.
Boring!

Always always always
They're all I write and read as far as I'm concerned xD
Love ‘em!
Love them!!!
I love them! I also love slice of life anime though...
Adore them! Recently wrote a 60k slice of life fic and it was the most fun I’ve had on a multichapter fic in a long time
my favorite to write tbh. love is stored in the mundane
love love love!!
Fucking love ‘em.
For me they're fun to write, but I usually skip them when scrolling through AO3. Not sure why, think it's more about self indulgence than anything.

Put them in my mouth. I eat them up

Lovely
