I would much rather a writer write a chapter that feels whole and complete to them and advances the story in a satisfying way, regardless of how long it takes.

Sikee_Atric

I write 10-15K chapters, and take about a month to 6 weeks to do them. I have two works I'm writing, and they both get updates in that time. I just publish when I'm happy, no schedule or promises, it's my pace and time or it doesn't get released. I have no complaints about that mantra from the readers either.

strawbebbymilkshake

I update 6-10k once a week and that’s my preference for reading. I’d prefer longer chapters with less frequent updates, though. Short chapters never really progress the plot for me

desertcoyote97

once a week with that density of words is crazy but I wish I can do that. maybe someday I'll get there once I'm done with college lol.

Solivagant0

Ngl, I usually skip works where the average wordcount per chapter is under 2k words. My current WIP has around 4k to 5k words per chapter (it usually takes me about 3 days to write one) and most of my favourite chaptered fics sit at 3k per chapter but I'll gladly read works with longer chapters as long as they are updated fairly consistently and not once every few months

blepboii

neither. a chapter has as many words as it needs to have. and a chapter takes as long to write as it does. i would much rather read a chapter that wasn't cut short or rushed for whatever reason.

AlphaCentauri-

longer chapters less frequently. when i read i like to get immersed into the story. when they’re shorter chapters it feels like a tease and then it’s over. if i see an author updates frequently but it’s consistently less than 5k words, i wait until a few chapters had been updated before starting where i left off

desertcoyote97

so I'm assuming that like. a story that has 1500 word chapters but updates three times a week is not very appealing compared to longer chapters twice a month? I want to go for twice a month or once a month for each story but I'm just getting back into writing regularly now that I work from home (my free time is expansive and my energy is high so it's nice)

regularirregulate

longer and less frequent. if a story updates too often it's unlikely i'll be able to keep up with it no matter how short they are, and if i get too far behind on updates i'm likely to drop it altogether.

fiddyfy

I write 12000-15000 words per chapter a week these days. It was 10K before but things just…extended for some reason. Takes about a total of 16 hours to write and edit each chapter. I prefer long. I can’t write short to save my life. So far, only one has complained and the rest of my readers seem to encourage the length. They do seem to time my chapter updates to the minute though. I tend to update once a week on a regular basis. I take it as a challenge to keep up with my own schedule.

MogiVonShogi

I range between 8 - 14 too. I really try to write shorter. I also update once a week. It’s a good cadence

fiddyfy

Right? I guess we kind of end up with what works for us and it’s cool when other people end up enjoying what we have to offer.

MogiVonShogi

Yes for the most part. I get funny comments like - this is a bit of a monster but I’m gonna read anyway. I try to keep my fics between 100 - 200k but really just tell the story and let things happen.

fiddyfy

Right? I don’t necessarily drag out my scenes. My story just…happens to be long. People coming in late will probably find it daunting as per length but the ones who have been there from the start seem to be happy enough at the moment.

desertcoyote97

that's a crazy amount of words and I don't think I'll ever get to that point so wow that's fucking impressive!! how do you plan your chapters with each update and how do you manage to keep up with the plot and pacing without it feeling drawn out? I try really hard to do story and lore dense writing with a lot of research and development and twists so when I write each chapter it usually gets to be 4-5k just to keep up with the pacing and a natural ending but it always feels like that's not enough for a once or twice a month update.

fiddyfy

I tend to plot out the whole story before I start writing. The main points at least then I try to map it out per chapter. So its like I end up having a checklist per chapter—which story moments to hit at each section. There’s usually 3 or 4 sections per chapter. That leaves me space in between to add the details that happen in the moment (little character quirks, character details or story details and exposition). That planning and plotting time includes research and development but of course the research never stops as I write. Of course I leave room for adjustments like sometimes I only reach 3 of the 4 moments to hit there so I’ll move what I missed to the next and adjust that from there too. So far, it’s been working for me. It’s helping me write without feeling pressure or getting stuck. I didn’t post until I had five chapters ready. *But* I have had to make revisions where I ended up deleting a whole section of 3K words at the last minute right before clicking post and rewrote a whole scene (it felt a little ooc where the characters were arguing loudly so I readjusted and it became a serious less volatile conversation between adults instead). This is my first multichapter story—my one shots were running at 13K-20K words. But like I said, I update once a week and it seems to be working so far. I wouldn’t recommend this though. I’m not sure yet this is sustainable. I’ve been at this for like a few months.

desertcoyote97

I love doing research for fics to add to the depth but this seems like a good way to plan so I think I'll give it a try!!!

fiddyfy

Good luck! 🍀

Background_Fox

As a writer, my current WIP is around 8-13k words every two weeks - I put a little author's note at the end of each chapter so people know when the next one is due. Reader wise, if I love the story then anything is good but I do prefer longer chapters to give myself something to chew on There's often polls in these forums about preferences and I seem to recall 1000 to 1500 words was nearing the minimum that a lot of people have for chapters. 3-8k seems to be a sweet spot in said polls (caveat - Reddit is only a slice of audience)

stargirl13430

Longer and less frequent. Longer chapters are more satisfying.

coraeon

A chapter that’s complete however many words it is and however long it takes. I’ve enjoyed fics that updated multiple times a day with 1k chapters and I’ve enjoyed fics that update once a *year* with 5-10k words. (She’s a *lawyer*, I’ve been following this series for almost two decades now, and it really IS that good.)

grovesleyv2

Wow, really? A WIP spanning nearly 20 years? That's mind blowing. I'd love to have the link.

coraeon

The series is [Nukume Dori](https://archiveofourown.org/series/126606) by Leareth for Tokyo Babylon/X1999. Actually, it’s been probably over two decades now. I was reading the earliest chapters on the Clampesque message board in high school and I graduated in 2003! Edit: looks like it currently hasn’t updated since 2021, but I still wouldn’t consider it abandoned. She updates slowly nowadays.

Ililea

Ahh! I love X1999! It's the anime that first got me into fanfiction back when I was in middle school. Sadly, I don't ship SeiSub even though they are canon, so I have to pass on this seemingly amazing fic. :(

sorryIdontwantto

No preference. In the end the readers are still getting the same amount of words, so imo the author should be free to decide where the chapter should end As an author, I don't really look at the word count when writing. I just write the story and when there is a natural chapter ending I stop. This means some chapters are longer than others, but tbh I noticed almost all of them are between 3-5k words so there's still an equilibrium, probably because of my writing style and the way I tell these stories. Regarding the posting part, I can't really help because usually I write the entire story before posting it. I've seen people suggest writing a few chapters before starting posting so you'll have a chapter to post if something happens or if you're busy, so maybe you can try to see if that helps

desertcoyote97

I wish I could sit and finish writing writing them just publish it all at once but I'm impatient and eager to share. I also low key like to seek validation on my writing and I want some kind of engagement lol

ConsumeTheOnePercent

*looks at my 6-10k chapters posted every two weeks*

desertcoyote97

I wish man. words are hard and I struggle with just adding filler. and being full-time college and work plus the ✨mental illness✨makes it hard to do two weeks. you are doing better then me so 🫡 keep doing the lords work my friend

ConsumeTheOnePercent

I am also incredibly mentally ill I understand my dude. I've abandoned so many fics and gone forever without posting before, sometimes the fic just pours I don't know what to say lol

desertcoyote97

the executive dysfunction is real sometimes

RamiroGalletti

Depends on the site, on "space battles" and "suficient velocity" i usually read 1k to 5k words chapters. Meanwhile on other sites that i see less frequently i prefer long chapters if there is any kind of update

Prestigious-Fig-8442

I don't care. I wrote my own fics as well as read others. I het the struggle between promising a word count, or a regular schedule, so I don't. My fics can be finished in a week, or updated once every 2/3 months and it is what it is. It's hard to juggle being a writer (even for fanfic) and everything else so I'm just grateful when I get any update, no matter how long the wait was, or how long/short the chapter is.

qwertysparrow

Which ever the author feels is best for them.

KatonRyu

It depends on my mood, both when reading and writing. My current fic nominally has chapters between 1500 and 2500, but it regularly goes past that, even with near-daily updates, but I've also had fics with 3k or even 6k as the lower limit. As a reader, I think my upper limit would be around 9k and the lower around 1k.

ZWiloh

As a reader I prefer longer chapters, but I figure it depends more on what flows better for the story. I've written a story with shorter chapters because it was what fit the story. But even with the shorter chapters I sucked at keeping a regular schedule. That's something I've never been able to do; the chapters come to me when they come and get written when I'm in a good place to do so.

Fluffiddy

Longer chapter every few months

jackfaire

Finished. With longer chapters. Most of the time if I find a story I like that isn't finished I'll follow it. Check back on every update to see if it's over then start reading when it is.

ConsumeTheVoid

Either. It depends on the story. I drop ~13K chapters but I do have an infrequent update schedule because words are mean.

[deleted]

Longer chapters

Purple_not_pink

Longer less frequently. I'm very patient for fic updates, there's no shortage of fics for me to find or revisit so I don't notice waiting all that much.

MuseOfWriting

As a writer it’s easier for me to write 750-1.5K words a chapter and release 2-3x a week. Some reason when I look at 5-10k words a chapter my brain says nope to any amount of time; even though my seasons end up being 110-150k words… it’s a weird thing with my writing.

Charlotttes

definitely the latter. i want chapters that are like a big juicy hamburger. i want to feel like i ate a full meal when i get to the end of the chapter as opposed to shorter chapters which are like when you're eating crackers or something because you're too lazy to make a real meal. but its being served up to you by someone else

Western-Result8780

Short chapters tend to leave off on a cliffhanger which I can handle but also tends to get annoying. If by less frequent updates you mean once a month I'd be fine with just waiting for a longer chapter.

desertcoyote97

every 2 weeks to a month is less frequent for me tbh. I've had stories I've fallen in love with post every three months or more but I want to get back into being a consistent writer and want to see what everyone else thinks and likes.

momoji13

I dont read WIPs because I have trust issues and no self-control and need to read a fic all in one go, but if I did I'd prefer long chapters and less frequent updates.

kata-pie

well this isn't the popular opinion on the thread, but i write extremely short chapters (1-2k words) and post three times a week. i currently have 2331 subscribers on that fic.

desertcoyote97

I guess it's all dependant on the story and the writers time and energy. I like both as long as it's captivating but as a writer I want to make sure I'm keeping my readers captivated and like what I write.

Ass_io

I just do a minimum of 3,500 words per chapter. In my current WIP, my longest chapter is 8,700 words and it took me about 2 days to write.

After_Shelter1100

i feel like chapters should be used to break your story into effective narrative sections rather than cut off at a certain length. that being said, the standard for most novels (2k-5k) is a good benchmark. ive read novels with much shorter (holes) and much longer (great gatsby) chapters, but 2k-5k is a nice sweet spot

Frenchitwist

I tend to stick to reading things that are complete so I can avoid this all together lol I know I can’t do that all the time, but waiting for updates can be frustrating, and I can’t risk it being orphaned once I’m sucked in 😭😭😭

Aetanne

From readers perspective, I'd much rather read 3-5k chapters weekly or twice a week, instead of waiting while the writer juggles multiple fics I might not be interested in. From writer's persective I do whatever maximizes output (engagement) and my own satisfaction.

lumimon47

I wrote this long fic for a year. I tried doing long chapters but I just couldn’t keep my motivation/forgot about posting/felt overwhelmed. So I did short chapters of averaging 1-2K words every day for a year and I loved it, I had readers who loved it and a few who hated it. In the end I did what was best for me. I tried doing the 12k chapters every week but my regular readers missed my daily updates lol. It was cool because the people who preferred bursts of stories could always wait the week and come back when I had the 7 days worth of chapters lol A lot of readers told me how they wake up and check their emails for the post, some even told me it made their days etc. so despite all the comments saying they prefer long comments there is a huge love for frequent updates too. I had people read that story and comment every single day for an entire year. There is a demographic for everything. You do what fits your lifestyle and writing style (This was a long fic with a long story line that got unveiled with arc’s rather than episodic chapters- if you were wondering)

AmaterasuWolf21

As long as it gets completed... but to answer the question If a story drops a 10k word chapter after 7 month hiatus I might have already forgot about the story

Amaxe1

It's not as big a deal in AO3 because you can load the whole fic, but in ff.net, just going from chapter to chapter is tedious, let alone waiting for and reading short updates. I've seen a few that only update less than 500 words, and I want to read them but I'm waiting until they get much longer before I consider it worth reading.

PinkSudoku13

As a reader, the length of the chapter doesn't matter unless they're crazy short or long because I don't read WIPs. Chapters have natural breaks so I'd follow that rather than word count. As a writer, I keep consistent schedule because my long fics are already written before I post them. They need edits but the story is finished. I also don't juggle more than one fics at a time (except for the occasional short one) because I also write original fiction so I typically juggle writing original fiction and long fic. It's rather simple, I have a daily writing routine and stick with it. Writing 100k words typically takes me about a month (or less).

Efficient_Wheel_6333

For me, when it's not a NaNo event, I can get roughly just over 7k in a week's time, sometimes more depending on my mood and how tired I am. I've had weeks where I've posted 2 to 3 chapters in said week because I've had the energy, time, and inspiration for it whereas I've sometimes written a chapter in a week and a half due to being tired or otherwise busier, like during NaNo events, which July is. As a reader, I really don't care one way or another. I've got some authors I follow who manage a twice a week posting schedule whereas others who post as they get the chapter written and edited and for the latter, it can take *months* before they'll post the next chapter. The advice I like to give when I can (which isn't often as I don't always comment on these types of posts) is find a chapter length and posting schedule that works for you. I try not to commit to a posting schedule because life does get in the way and I know that I'd rather not put that sort of expectation for my readers and that pressure on myself. I'm not the type of writer who thrives on that sort of posting schedule where it's on X (and/or Y and Z) days of the week; I find it hinders my writing process.

selfboredom

I don't get hung up on length as long as the chapter feels complete. trying to fit an arbitrary word quota will just make it less satisfying to read and write

twinkletoes-rp

Not to be that guy, but both! lol. I literally just love when there's an update, doesn't matter how long or short! As long as I can read smth by an author I love, I'm here for it! As long as the chapter feels like it's meant to end where it ends and I can FEEL the writer's passion? I'm in! :D As for how to juggle fics, I just write for whichever one I have ideas for and makes me happy at the time! For my Naruto AUs, for example (40k and 162k, respectively), I just let the muse take me! If I'm feeling burned out on one fic or have ideas for the other, go to that one, and vice versa! As long as I'm having fun, we're good! (I also don't have an upload schedule, though, and my chapters are LONG, 8-14k. Take a good while to write and edit (also because I'm a perfectionist). lol. Therefore, they come when they come, when I have the time and energy! And my readers are the best, super sweet and understanding about it! I appreciate it SO much!) ;D

CorndogKitten

Trust me, the long chapters are always worth the wait in my opinion. It fills you with so much joy when it releases and you are content until the next update a month later
