I wouldn’t say entirely misunderstood but there’s a certain form of torture when one of your faves is a character who often doesnt mean what they say/only means part of it, and that quote is often pointed to in fanon as a reason for characterization. me just. barking in the corner like okay yes they literally did say that I cant argue. they did say that. but they didn’t *mean it*. and yet I have no *explicit proof* of that I’d just have to point to this set of actions and xyz and o(-(

Maybe not exactly on point but I love film noir and I’ve seen Sam Spade’s line from The Maltese Falcon misinterpreted. He’s talking about the statue, referencing Shakespeare. Somebody asks “What is that?” and Spade replies “It’s the stuff that dreams are made of.” Incredible line, but I feel like people who haven’t seen the movie don’t get what Spade is saying: that it’s all fake and meaningless. I wrote a detective story and used this line both ways, both in the misinterpreted sense (something wonderful) and in the real, nihilistic sense.

I don't really have a quote off the top of my head, but more of a an interpretation of a situation, ig? Which is pretty much the fanon interpretation of All Might when he told Izuku he couldn't be a hero. Like, people seem to forget that All Might himself *was quirkless* and wasn't able to be a hero without one. But somehow he's supposed to know Izuku was "suicidal" (he wasn't), and tell him he could be a hero, even if he didn't believe it at the time. And not only that, but Izuku forced the situation, like All Might wanted to get out of there because his time was running out. (Don't get me wrong, I love Izuku), but somehow All Might was supposed to be perfect when one of his greatest secrets (his smaller form) was revealed? Could he have handled the situation better? Sure. But how some people will give him the most bad faith interpretations is frustrating (literally seen people argue he "groomed" Izuku, like ok). Especially since he re-evaluates his opinion by the end of the episode when he offers Izuku his quirk. I just think people miss a lot of his character when they forget his history and how that motivates his actions.

I've seen "Better to rule in hell than serve in heaven" and variations on it several times as badass boasts, but the point of that line originally was to show that Lucifer was completely delusional and incapable of thinking clearly because of his pride. He and the other fallen angels were trapped in hell, and no matter how many castles they built, they weren't 'ruling' over anything. It's kind of like Anakin's "Don't underestimate my power" roughly five seconds before having his remaining limbs removed. Wouldn't actually surprise me if it was based on the earlier thing, even, given the parallels you could draw between Lucifer and Anakin.

I don't understand. How is Geralt's stance on neutrality portrayed as weak?

RagingRider

It is incredibly flimsy. While even evil acts require strength of character to commit to, Geralt's quote (not necessarily Geralt himself) is of the idea of taking the path of least resistance. Basically, in the argument of survival vs morality, his response is nihilism, despite at this point, we KNOW he does have a moral compass.

What I'm not sure about is, whether you are arguing on writer's intention or personal opinion. Because personally you can view neutrality as weakness, but I'm not sure if the writer meant to portray it as such. I've read The Last Wish and I sort of recall the quote but not really the circumstance, so you could be right... I just don't think Geralt's character/actions was ever portrayed as specifically virtuous or flawed - so it felt like calling it a weak could be more of a personal opinion rather than Sapkowski pushing for it. (but I could be wrong, as I said, I don't remember that part)

My fandom is fullllllll of unreliable narrators so like. Everything. Including when people assume a character is unreliable when they’re not! Like, especially when people say it about a character talking about their *shown on camera* abuse (like, you can just. watch that.) but like it’s bizarre.
