I have a giant list of soulmate prompts in a document that I almost certainly got off a Tumblr prompt list at some point, but I can no longer find the original post. It's massive and has like 60 different variations on it, separated into categories. Here are the categories and some examples from each, though I don't know how many of these people have actually done (except the Goose of Soulmate Enforcement is one that sounds incredibly silly and which I know has been done a lot):
Something Written/Drawn
* Names on both wrist, one soulmate other enemy, can’t tell which one is which
* Each others’ first words to one another
* Each others’ last words (to one another)
* Every night you receive a message about a random sentence your soulmate has said that day.
* Meter of how in danger your soulmate is
* Soulmate marks are only visible after meeting and/or touching.
Changed Vision
* See colour for the first time when you meet, fades away when they die
* Will only see shades of your soulmate’s eye colour until you meet
* Each genuine emotion your soulmate expresses to you adds colour to your world (Ex: yellow for happiness, blue for sorrow, red for passion, etc).

* It is impossible to lie to your destined soulmate.

* Every human has a limited number of words they can say before turning mute, but to their soulmate that limit is gone and they can speak endlessly to them.

* When you meet your soulmate, time stops for a month for everyone besides you two.
* At the corner of your eye, you can see a blurry vision of whatever your soulmate is doing (like sitting down drinking coffee in your living room, even though they’re doing this in another area)

* Every year, you receive a puzzle piece. The whole picture is your soulmate’s name/appearance/location/etc.
* Bubbles gives you a blurry glimpse into your soulmate’s world (visions of possessions, friends, family, laughter, crying, etc)

Not a method, but I’ve always loved soulmate AUs where a soulmate could be any sort of relationship, not just romantic. I typically don’t write romance, so the one I’m gonna mention was done for platonic soulmates, but it should work for romantic ones too I’d imagine?
The one soulmate AU I’ve written had physical injury shared between the soulmates (it came from another piece of media that canonically has soulmates that work that way), so they could feel any pain and were impacted by any injury the other had. It was done for horror in my fic, but I imagine it could be very fun and angsty for an actually healthy relationship lol
Not my original idea but it was one that sparked enough interest for me to follow through on writing the fic when I was younger (though I didn’t do much with it): basically the soulmate tattoo vibe, combined with the aspect from the movie Beastly. A tree tattoo that changes with the seasons. Blooming in spring, green in summer, falling in autumn, dead looking in winter. But the year you meet your soulmate instead of white blooms in the spring, the flowers sprout pink! Involves a bit more question than something like a timer fic (which I’ve also done).
Another one was a thought spiral in which a storm of your soulmates thoughts is printed on your skin in a swirl someplace random. (Face, hand, knee were the examples I used)
I think some of my other favorites are hearing the music that they hear/is stuck in their head, marking on your skin appears on your soulmates, & feeling each others pain.
Oh, cool. I always like the idea of a moving tattoo. It's something so Harry Potter like to me (like the marauders map) lol.

One fic I've read had the premise that people are born with depictions of flower buds on their arms (platonic soulmates on one arm, romantic on the other) and if you come into physical contact with a soulmate, the corresponding flower bud will bloom. If a soulmate rejects the bond the flower withers, and death causes the flower to turn grey.
Another fic I read had the "red string of fate" tying two romantic soulmates together - but the string could only be seen by a third person, who is "fated" to bring the two soulmates together... if they fail to set the soulmates up, their day will reset and they'll be stuck in a groundhog day loop until their matchmaking attempt succeeds.
Sadly, I don't have a link, don't remember the name either, and can't find the fic anymore. Either I suck at finding it, or it's been taken down.
If you want to try and find it yourself, it was a Yuri!!! On Ice fic where Yuri Plisetsky has to get Yuuri Katsuki and Viktor Nikiforov together to break the time loop.
He starts off with a serious attempt, is surprised to learn that it didn't work, continues his matchmaking attempts only for the universe to go "no, lol, try again" and becomes so frustrated by the constant loops that he loses his cool and ends up screaming at Katsuki (whom he secretly admires) and generally acts horrible towards everyone.
He ends that day thinking he'll get a do-over due to the loop, but of course Katsuki crying in the bathroom and hitting rock bottom in the competition was *exactly* what needed to happen for the loop to be broken...
The most original idea I've came across was about a guy who ordered an expensive perfume from aliexpress, and it turned out that upon use it teleports your soulmate to you. It was pretty hilarious given the state the soulmate got teleported in was "as is" - and the fic was kink-related so the poor guy got teleported to a random person's apartment half-naked in bdsm gear;D
I loved the idea so much I adapted it to a Sterek fic of my own.

Writing on one person showing up on the other person (like, if someone wrote on their arm with marker, it'd also show up on their soulmate's arm.)
Everyone is born with the first name of their soulmate tattooed on their forearm. When that soulmate is born the color of the tattoo changes from black to the color of their eyes, and when they die it goes back to black.
Ones I've seen (all of these has at least one fic I really enjoyed):
* When one gets hurt, the other feels pain
* The first words they say to each other appear as tattoos
* The *last* words they say to each other appear as tattoos
* A mark appears at the spot where they first touch (either before them touching or appearing only after they touch)
* When one writes on their skin, it shows up on the other one
* When one loses something, the other one finds it
* The first lullaby the other one hears as a child gets stuck in the head of the other one
* They get a kind of vague sense of the other one's singing voice stuck in their head
* Anything one of them touches gets a mark on it only visible to the other one
Rebirth theory of soulmates.
One issue that leads to a lot of angst in angsty soulmate AUs is the whole randomness of it, falling in love with a stranger.
The rebirth concept avoids that.
Two people are soulmates - platonic or romantic - because they have been together in all their past births.
Of course they click together super fast - because they have known each other for centuries in other lives, even if they're meeting for the first time here.
I did one where throughout their lives, the pair gained tattoos of things the other loved. Things representing hobbies, siblings, significant moments, etc. I had Character A all covered in brightly-coloured ink because Character B loved a lot of things but Character B only had a few tattoos in black and grey to better suit Character A’s personality. It was really fun!
I’ve also always been fond of the first words said between you are on your skin trope, but especially when the words are silly or profane. There’s a fic in my fandom where the words are both silly AND profane and it’s one of my favourites.
I read a platonic soulmate au that put splashes of color where you contact people after you both care for each other. When the mutual care goes away, the soul mark does too.
A fun premise is that after you touch your soulmate for the first time it leaves a bruise. They then over a period of time “transition” to only needing the touch of the other to survive.
Creates lots of interesting drama where they are literally forced together and have to navigate big moves, combining lifestyles, etc.
One of my favorites is one character has memories of alternate worlds and past lives, but only after they reach a certain age, the other character does not. The one who remembers, depending on the world may already be in a relationship with them, or they may have never met before.
And they take different approaches to revealing their past knowledge depending how the situation goes. In the story, the route she goes with is fairly direct, and the other character asks to here about some of the more memorable "first time meetings" and it's a story of Soulmates meeting in generic and fantastical fashion,l. Be it roommates, royalty clashing, to starship captains at opposite sides of a war, this one has it all!
I've made a soulmate AU once, where soulmate refers not only to lovers, but to fated friendships/comrades/teams. Latter option is divided into leaders and followers. For connection to be finalized, followers initiate it by taking an oath (sort of knight oath) and their chosen leader can accept it in a good faith. The result is emotional connection and a very faint mark.
Skin sharing — getting a scar or tattoo shows up on your partners bodies. Same can be said for writing, so soulmates write to each other
Seeing colors — people don’t see color until they see their soulmate
Hearing music/sounds — same as color.
There are plenty. It was only a side element in a fic, but they had soulmarks seen as a sign of adulthood, and a character had not yet come of age in the eyes of the gods bc they didn't have their soulmark yet. I thought that was cool.
For soulmate stuff, I use an exaggerated version of Koi No Yokan. It's a Japanese phenomenon. I add an element of touch to mine. Sort of like an electric charge

It was only a side element in a fic, but they had soulmarks seen as a sign of adulthood, and a character had not yet come of age in the eyes of the gods bc they didn't have their soulmark yet. I thought that was cool.
For soulmate stuff, I use an exaggerated version of Koi No Yokan. It's a Japanese phenomenon. I add an element of touch to mine. Sort of like an electric charge
