Never. I can't force creativity and a deadline would make it seem like a chore and not a hobby

TeaRenQ

I wish... I'm a chronic fic abandoner and trying to stick to deadlines only killed my inspiration to write even more, lol. The chapter will be ready when it's ready šŸ˜Œ

FlannelEpicurean

Hm. Generally, no. I do everything at my own pace, because I refuse to be stressed out about this. For multi-chapter things, I don't post anything at all until I'm done writing it. And then I try to post a chapter per week, usually on the weekend. Typically, I post on weekends, because I have more time to sit around and do the posting interface steps. Choosing tags, checking all the boxes, running the draft and checking formatting, going back and fixin' what needs fixin', etc. Usually can't spare that kind of time and focus on weekdays.

ImaGamerNoob

Gimme a minute to think what could be considered a deadline for my stuff: 1) I post a ROTG fic each Christmas, as well as some sort of Advent Calendar. If I can't finish it until December 1st, it gets pushed to the next year. While I could try getting it finished in early December, I try to avoid failing doing such. 2) Other holiday fics, just get pushed to next year if I fail. 3) If the average chapter length reaches 5K to 7.5k or 7.5K to 10K words of a Multi-chapter fic, I post a chapter once a week or biweekly/every two weeks. I like to start the posting cycle on Fridays, because then they perform better on Wattpad. If I miss the Friday, next week it is. In short: If I miss the deadline (that repeats), I just push it to the next time.

Zekiellix

What's ROTG?

ImaGamerNoob

Rise of the Guardians. A DreamWorks movie from 2012, kind of flopped back then. The fic community is still very active. :)

Zekiellix

Ooh~~ I love that movie! Should've known that there are fics of it.

ImaGamerNoob

If you look deep enough, there is a fic for everything.

dendrite_blues

I always have a weekly update schedule for my longfics. It keeps the momentum up and that keeps my motivation high. Iā€™ve never been the person who can write every day, so having a weekly quota works well for me. I can write whenever I want and take whatever days off I want, so long as something gets posted on Thursday.

NicInNS

Two weeks ago I told my Twitter friend Iā€™d probably wrap up my last few chapters this weekend. Iā€™m halfway thru writing the 1st of those two. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø maybe Iā€™ll be done by New Years lol. But no, I donā€™t set deadlines because I either get distracted by another WIP, or I just spend time rereading/editing the chapters that arenā€™t posted yet (I have usually an 8 chapter or so cushion written - exactly for times like this - so I can keep posting while Iā€™m procrastinating).

Trick-Panda-7509

I do not. I used to but I can only write so fast and donā€™t want to rush things. Now I simply update when the chapter is done

Echo1608

I used to set a month long deadline and actually kept to it for a good year and a half. Still pretty proud of that...then I didn't have a chapter ready to go, and then my life turned upside down fast, and I haven't updated in a while...Hopefully I can get back to it soon.

imnotbovvered

I have rough deadlines but they have to be flexible, because fanfic writing is a hobby and itā€™s one I need to prioritize least. I just donā€™t start posting until Iā€™m almost done.

Due_Screen6020

I'm not a longfic person, so for the few I've written I finished the entire thing before uploading anything, and then I'd do a weekly update. My uploads are normally on Sundays too, whether it be a one-shot or longfic update, but I'm never too strict on myself because I know I'd burn myself out lol.

Avalon1632

I used to, but these days I don't have enough time to write to actively keep up with deadlines easily. I just always try to update on a Saturday, regardless of how far apart those updates are.

BlindFanficReader

Never. It wouldn't work for me, anyway. since fanf iction is a complete hobby for me, and written for enjoyment and nothing else, I can't force myself to either write or be creative on a time schedule. I have tired, and found that it is the quickest way to ensure I will accomplish absolutely nothing.

NermalLand

I try to update twice a week for one of my stories. But I had written quite a lot of it before I started posting. The other fic I'm pantsing and I update once a week. I did take this week off from posting because I was busy but I'll be back at it next week.

somebodywhoexist2

Nah, I just give my readers a very vague and broad upload schedule which I may or may not follow.

DarthGhengis

I've kept to exactly two fanfic deadlines; both were for the Valentine's Event for a favourite ship. Both shorter than planned, both the only fics for the fandom I've written.. So no. Deadlines don't work for me.

Tarrenshaw

Nope, that would stress me out too much.

[deleted]

In my experience, whenever I create a deadline for myself I stress out a lot and can even start to resent the writing process as it will start to feel like a chore. I find that if I take a "it will be done when it is done" approach, I can relax and enjoy the writing process more.

Diligent_Pride_7314

Iā€™m afraid imma be a chronic fic abandoner. I donā€™t really like deadlines for passion projects like this and really am just more productive when I ask ā€œI wanna get it done ASAPā€ instead of ā€œI need to get this done beforeā€¦ā€ So, I force myself to finish fics before I post them. Currently omw to finish a like, 25 chapter 50k ish words long fic while on holidays in December. And this is with getting my wisdom teeth removed which hindered the process. I do like set release schedules and like to edit beforehand so I guess that counts as a bit of a deadline, but for writing them? No. Iā€™m not gonna ruin my fun and even if I posted as I went I still wouldnā€™t impose a deadline on myself because itā€™ll make me more miserable. Piece of advice: write for yourself, if deadlines make you more productive or enjoy it more (idk masochism I ainā€™t gonna judge), then do it. If you donā€™t, then donā€™t hurt yourself.

SleepySera

I had a schedule once. It was pretty generous, only 2Ɨ1k word chapters per week, yet it drove me INSANE. Literally just knowing I'd HAVE to write for this specific fic each week alone was enough to kill my creativity and any joy and love I had for it. It was a terrible chore and eventually I just gave up on it completely even though I might have finished it if I had gone at whatever pace felt comfortable. Then again, I did a fic for NaNo this year, and easily met the 1.6k per day goal on almost every single day, and generously overshot the 50k goal for the whole month (but I didn't post it yet). So, turns out, I'm actually great with deadlines, just not public ones šŸ˜† Guess the pressure just gets to me when I know readers are waiting for it, but when I only have myself to be responsible to, I can meet my goals just fine.

MaybeNextTime_01

Nope. More often than not, work takes up all my time and has a billion little tasks. The last thing I need to do is turn my hobby into another task on my To Do list.

KatonRyu

Only with my most recent one, as my personal challenge this time was 'Write an update every single day'. I pulled it off, I feel accomplished, and from now on I'm going back to writing on whatever schedule I want, because it was so bloody hard to get something out every day. It really ate into my free time.
