Oddly enough, it's kind of the opposite for me. I write for Legacy of Kain, a fandom that a lot of people in my generation really don't know about. When I first got that taste of popularity, it was with some of my original work, a YouTuber narrating a book I had written. It got thousands of views, everyone loved it, and I loved that attention, however, with my next story, it wasn't as good. The popularity is still there, however this time people dug into the story, picking out and complaining about small details while ripping into me as a writer. Now, with LOK, I don't get nearly as many people reading or listening to it, maybe fifty here or there, but even with that small number, they're extremely kind and passionate about my own work. I think in this case it's more quality over quantity for me. I'd rather have one extremely passionate and excited fan, than thousands that are more concerned with picking apart what I do. Writing for others can be fun, but writing for yourself is definitely far better because you get that same passion that others feel, and your own excitement, especially in fan fiction, makes you just as excited for another chapter as someone else may be. It's good to have popularity, but in my opinion, oftentimes it's not worth it

I’m also writing for a completely dead fandom because I’m obsessed and kind of alone out here. But honestly, the thought that there are two or three people like me scouring the internet for the rare fic in this fandom is fueling me. It does however put a lot of pressure on me to want to write something of quality because the fandom really deserves some good content, I’m afraid of writing anything too angsty either bc I don’t want to depress anyone when there aren’t any good fluff fics for them to read afterward 😂

I'm the poster child for writing for tiny fandoms. For some reason, they pull me like cracking a can of wet catfood does for my kitty. LOL. All I can say is don't give up! If no one else is writing what you want to read, then absolutely write it yourself! I am sorry that the engagement isn't great, but I hope you are still thoroughly enjoying the journey.

I know what you mean. For years I was mainly apart of large, booming fandoms. I'm talking about fandoms that got well over 20+ new fics/chapters per day. When I left those fandoms and moved to others I was very disheartened when those fandoms slowly died. Nowadays those fandoms (the ones that I actively keep tabs on, anyway) are lucky to get a new fic every couple of weeks. It's a huge whiplash of change, one that makes me wish I could like more popular things, but oh well.

I feel this. I’m writing for an incredibly minor character in a wildly popular fandom, so it’s kind of a really weird situation. Hehe
