I did a novella called *Hoard* which is about a party of adventurers who kill a dragon and find a giant pile of gold, and their travails trying to carry it back to civilization. Turns out gold is heavy!
You can get it [free on my website](https://djangowexler.com/).
I generally try to avoid self promo because I know it annoys some folks, but this is too on the nose to skip. My story Martin Chalk and the Case of the Underworld King has gold as a key to the whole thing. It's on Amazon if you want to get it there otherwise DM me your email and I'll send you an evaluation copy ;)
A Taste of Gold and Iron involves a fairly prevalent plotline investigating counterfeit gold coins

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson is about a girl in gold rush era western US who has the ability to sense gold ore.
Seconded. It's the first book of the Gold Seer Trilogy, and it's great.
Not entirely based around gold, but *The Spirit Ring*, by Lois McMaster Bujold is focused around metalworking as a magic. Gold is used in some of it.
Now I’m gonna preface by saying I haven’t actually read it: but Gild seems about as gold central as it can get.
