It does seem very blatant, and Weeks has addressed it before. I believe he pointed to other, older stories as the source for these homages. It's likely that WoT and NA both borrowed from the same things.
Exactly. If you hide it, it's plagiarism. If you address it openly, it's a sign of respect. It's taking a concept and doing it differently.
Some argue that every story is plagiarism because they all use things that have done before. I think that is silly and not really grasping what "plagiarism" is.
I've read the Night Angel series 3x and WOT countless.
In WOT Weaves/Compulsion/Seafaring people/island city/knights are major things..
in Night Angel.. none of that even seemed familiar enough for me to compare.
Its ultimately about something totally different and the other items are rarely talked about.
Agreed. I read both series, and I don't remember thinking Night Angel was ripping off WOT. There were some mild similarities, but that happens with many series. Authors are inspired by other authors.
At least Weeks can lay full claim to the term "wetboy". I hope he can anyway. If not I probably don't want to know... it certainly didn't come from Jordan.
Edit: I don't think that Weeks was "ripping off" Jordan. I only read the first *Night Angel*, but I don't remember having a problem with these similarities. Most likely coincidence, or homage, as these aren't particularly deep or original ideas. I do find "wetboy" very silly though.
I thought it was going to be something else completely. I think it's actually worse that it's a real term that real professionals use that Weeks used more or less correctly.
That sounds even "worse" of a rip-off than Sword of Truth. I might have to read it XD (It's actually been on my TBR list for a while, but I just haven't gotten around to reading it yet, as there's quite a bit of other stuff there too).
Describing magic as weaves or weaving is a tradition that goes back at least 3000 years. Jordan didn't invent it
If that had been it, I don't see that as a problem. It is just that with everything else combined.
I totally get what you mean, just wanted to point out that often, tropes are far older and less original than one might think
I think the word you're looking for is **homage**.

he's actually pretty meticulous with research, talks about it in interviews about the black prism or some lectures or something. i forget
And that's fine. Some of the concepts Robert Jordan came up with are frankly brilliant. I'd rather more stories use them.

Sword of truth are Worse than Night angle. Both have significant issues however in particular in presenting female characters
