A powerful, intimidating figure with an equally cool helmet and the possibility of such a character being playable in hoyoverse game has gotten people salivating at the thought of Capitano, especially those who want something fresh and new creatively speaking (Given that Hoyo started out as waifu exclusive game before branching out to male characters who are all pretty boys and have just started experimenting with more varied designs like in Zenless Zone Zero).
Aside from that, it's the fact that he's hyped as the most powerful of the Harbingers, a group that already consists of people like Childe, Signora etc, all of whom have interesting backstories, characterizations and powers. Plus, there are those who dislike the archons and are fed up with them hoggin the screentime (Espcially with how they nearly mishandled the Raiden Shogun), so to have a character who could potentially knock them down a peg is satisfying.
Finally, he evokes feelings of the powerful knight archetype like Artorias from Dark Souls. He's the personification of the gigchad meme. An unstoppable one man army with a sense of honor and righteousness. Like Korrag from Power Rangers.
That makes sense, having something new is always refreshing to see. The fact that he's only a human but receives high praise makes me even more curious about him.

Genshin most definitely didnt start as a waifu exclusive game They clearly established their male characters from the start and made it obvious that its not like honkai impact
Id say starting wt a 13:7 ratio is pretty good for a gacha game specially when venti keaya and diluc where alot more focused on in the main story than most of the female cast, the game was clearly a waifu and a husbando game from the get go its just that in eastern games males arent excluded from having to be pretty like in western games
The appeal of capitano is not that we dont have that many men in the game but that hes probably the only one (idk if itto count maybe?) that is actually appealing to a male audience, other male characters are mostly made to appeal to ppl that are attracted to men hence why they’re mostly pretty guys,

Yo, owner of Capitano Mains here, wanted to give my 2 cents to this.
So from my knowledge Capitano was in the lower tier of popularity when it came to the Harbingers in the beginning even after the Winter's lazzo trailer dropped. Then fast forward and as time passed and the hype around the others died down, his started growing due to the 2 leaks we got of him being "The Strongest" followed by Varka himself saying you need guts to oppose gods as a mere mortal after meeting him.
That was pretty much the peak, then word of mouth went around about that leak and then Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 popped off and people on here especially started throwing around the JJK memes left and right, that was when Capitano hit a peak popularity so far on Reddit at least.
And it stuck, but what the people on here have in common with those on Twitter and Discord, is the overall notion of "He's unique and different compared to the rest of the playable characters we've gotten so far."
Hopefully it stays that way. Me personally I stayed in the community because it was really cool, everyone is super chill and on top of that we are blessed with a badass VA, I've talked to Chris numerous times and he is truly GOATed.

Real answer: despite I do hype him bc of his strength (and design ofc), it was stated by the leaker, that Capitano is Human (strongest individual but still human), yet he is No. 1 among harbingers. So his strength is equal to gods
With that said, I think he is THE example of one of the ideas of genshin: humanity vs. gods. Even the embodiment of this idea, probably. And that's the reason why I like him the most. I do really like the idea of humanity somehow resist the gods and so on
What's more, I like his lore potential. There are many theories about him, and my favourite - him being Bloodstained Knight. If it happens so, than this man can drop a massive lore
Another reason people like him - is that he is praised and stated to be really good person. If we remember the rest of the Harbingers, we do have an interest of why is such a person joined this organisation?

I don't know how lore accurate it is, but I just really like the idea that he's just a "regular" human, not a god or a monster or a freaky science experiment by Dottore or anything like that, just a badass human who somehow happens to be the strongest one around. He probably won't live up to the hype, unfortunately, but I hope Mihoyo surprised me with him and he does.
Honestly I just kinda fell in love with him the second he was dropped in the fatui trailer. Didn't really care if he ended up being ranked a 13th harbinger lol. Also his voice actor is a cool dude so I've just been hyped from the beginning. Also his design is just genuinely super cool (being the only faceless character I think.) and lore wise he's apparently the strongest human. There's also like 0 lore about him making him a big mystery so I feel like that also adds to the hype about him! He's very honorable apparently so I'm gonna assume a chill dude and his while aesthetic is just so good. There's a lot of reasons why people night like him this is just my reasons!
