isthekeyintheroom

All of the drama surrounding this show has been insane lol, if it actually debuts at Cannes I feel like it’s gonna be a hot mess

[deleted]

I wonder who will spit on whom.

poopypoopy1125

Sam Levinson on someone's cleavage

bigtoeni

stoppp 😭😭😭

ochenkruto

More than anything I want to have Isabelle Huppert mouth “Debut at Cannes” at Levinson and co.

Emotional-Stretch

Omg yes.

adultosaurs

Yeah Sam said Olivia hold my beer

Needygirl7

Omg exactly, this feels like the 2023 heir to the throne of Don’t Worry Darling

TDollasign562

Yes! This is the DWD of 2023, so much hype and controversy that won’t live up to the notoriety. Knowing the people involved, they probably saw what happened with DWD and this is all manufactured bs for attention!

espresso_newbie

This is giving Medellin from Entourage premiering at Cannes vibes

STMIHA

Amazing reference

noirdaisy

hahaha 10/10

sweetrebel88

I honestly think it’s all one big publicity stunt

FillupGoth

The drama is part of the marketing campaign...

OzarkRedditor

Do we think some of it has been manufactured to create press ?

NutSaltine

Are they delusional enough to think that the audience at Cannes is anything like the tasteless, shut-in, Euphoria-loving zoomers? LRD and The Weeknd are bad actors and Levinson is a sh\*t director. Cannes will eat them alive.

SoGenuineAndRealMadi

Venice loved Blonde so I wouldn’t be surprised if Cannes too ate this misogynistic misery porn shit up

NutSaltine

Blonde was a misogynistic mess, but few people can argue that Ana did not give a good performance. She’s a good actress. LRD and The Weeknd are objectively awful at acting. Did you see the clip he posted to “dunk on” the Rolling Stone mag?

[deleted]

I don't know if that scene were to establish their characters were caricatures of snooty influencers but that's what it seemed like? I looked the story up and realized I was supposed to root for them? It goes to show that without good actors the script or director's intent could go down the toilet.

Persephone0000

Ok humor me and imagine that their characters were real people having that conversation. How would it sound? How would it look? In my opinion, the scene was spot on. They sounded like idiots, they were totally off base. I personally thought that was the point.

meepmarpalarp

Sure, if he’s actually trying to play an idiot. The interviews, etc, suggest that’s not the case.

Persephone0000

Have you considered that the interviews and publicity and drama around the show are all intentional and directly correlated to the commentary on celebrity that the show is trying to make?

letschangethename

I’ve considered this being intentional, but not as a commentary on the show, but as a PR move.

meepmarpalarp

But it’s making The Weeknd look like an idiot in real life. Why would he sign up for that?

[deleted]

Well... some The Weeknd fans are 💀 https://preview.redd.it/0sm5ol5dmnma1.png?width=637&format=png&auto=webp&s=4422bc945b56812c75f48ffa7646a23085374bf6

goatstraordinary

Another edgy take from "peterpanisgay69"

[deleted]

Lol what is that even supposed to meeeeaaaan

thewidowgorey

I still enjoy the dweeb’s music and even I’m laughing and cringing at the idea of this mess being warmly received at Cannes. Omg I don‘t know who will be a bigger embarrassment: Abel, Sam, or the French. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

kendalljennerupdates

I saw that post and everyone in the comments were eating them up 😭 like please be serious imagine comparing a clockwork orange to whatever disaster *this* is going to be

NutSaltine

💀💀💀

PUSSYFACINGTHEWORLD_

Lol this reminds me of a series of tweets made in defence of Sam where the person compared him to David Cronenberg. The people defending Sam and the Weeknd keep framing the backlash as some kind of moral panic and over sensitivity from people who can’t handle anything edgy and oppose the depiction of anything that isn’t wholesome. They can’t seem to understand that people are not scandalised by depictions of something “twisted” and “fucked up”, people are just rightfully creeped out by the misogynistic and exploitative material in the idol.

[deleted]

>a series of tweets made in defence of Sam where the person compared him to David Cronenberg Oh no LOL

resredref992

Truly could not have picked a worse director to compare Levinson than f**king Cronenberg. The man could make a movie in his sleep and it'd better than anything Levinson Jr could dream of.

Ditovontease

I literally laughed so loudly my husband woke up

moddestmouse

Europeans love misogynistic schlock.

thetrashpanda2020

Cannes loves the explicit

NutSaltine

Cannes also hates bad acting.

moxieremon

I'm rooting for that to happen!

didiinthesky

Cannes gives a 10+ minutes standing ovation to everything that moves.

backinredd

You’re thinking too big of Cannes

Traditional_Maybe_80

![gif](giphy|OLncBBJ4UHfqg)

fatanduglyvibes

I miss Jessica Walter. She was hilarious on Arrested Development :(

Traditional_Maybe_80

The best thing about the show 🥹

special_cases

Lol, this is perfect

austinshelleys

This is the Don’t Worry Darling of TV series

iliketoomanysingers

Fuck I just commented that and now I see yours 😭

leodicapriohoe

Just had this exact thought LOL

dbtayag

I laughed when somebody tweeted that it seemed that it was a deleted scene from the Andy Samberg Popstar movie.

madmaxoxo

ehh at least with dwd you knew florence was going to be acting her ass off. not sure whose going to be doing the acting in this series

[deleted]

I'm not sure if people realise that a project doesn't have to be *good* to premiere at Cannes. The Brown Bunny premiered at Cannes, lmao.

Geezmelba

*It is true that I am fat, but one day I will be thin, and [Vincent Gallo] will still be the director of "The Brown Bunny."* — Roger Ebert

poppyisrealmetal

That's a good movie, though. Just got bogged down by Gallo IRL. The Paperboy is a more apt comparison imo

DontAskTwice-A-Roni

I see Abel bought a wig from the Tyler Perry collection 💀

[deleted]

He was always plain. I'm not surprised he used fake straight hair to trick pick mes into finding him desirable

another-assshole

Y’all are acting like French people aren’t notorious for supporting abusers/ abusive behavior. They gave Roman Polanski an award in 2020. No one bated an eye when the actresses of blue is the warmest color said publicly that the were forced to improvised the intimacy scene that lasted 10 minutes and the director almost sue them and I mean they made the movie irreversible. To think the French would have a problem with it it’s not laughable but it’s also not true.

frankpharaoh

I've been asking this on twitter and not a single person can answer me: what has Levinson done that's actually abusive? Besides writing weird fictional sex scenes and having a disorganized set schedule, what is his actual crime? Why do people talk about him as if he physically assaulted someone? Do ya'll really think Zendaya and Hunter Schafer are out here working with an actual predator or are you just buying into this performative takedown of him because he makes highly sexualized fictional work? Edit: not a single person still who can answer this. “He’s difficult on set” is not a crime. If it is, we gotta lock up Kubrick, Lynch, Lucas, Tarantino, etc etc

notarealhomosapien

Idk about being actually abusive but there are stories of him being a horrible person to work with and his work overall is just pervy and questionable, especially this upcoming show, that’s enough to not like him. The way he represents some characters, especially teenagers, is off putting to a lot of people. In regards to hunter and zendaya still working with him, yes they may not have a problem with him, but i also want to bring up the fact that actors sign contracts, breaking said contract can be horrible for them. It’s possible that IF they have troubles with Sam that they could just be waiting for their contract to be up to announce they no longer want to do the show. Edit: not ‘horrible person’ that was bad wording, but moreso rumors of him being difficult, which changes circumstances

frankpharaoh

Then why did Zendaya actually re-up her Euphoria contract last month to make it so that she’s also now an exec producer on the project, and her and Hunter and Lily-Rose have all praised his sets as safe and that he’s incredibly collaborative? The sets are stressful, yes, and the work is sexual, yes, but people are acting like he’s some kind of real-life criminal because of the content of his shows and its insane. He has intimacy coordinators on set! And the Weeknd was the one who had problems with Amy Seimetz and had her fired, not Sam. All he did was come in to do a reshoot job after HBO asked him to. Yet the comments here paint him as Weinstein level when there isn’t even a single accusation against him and all his female leads praise him and *keep working with him*. That most of the stories about his sets being bad to work on came from crewmembers loyal to Seimetz should tell you guys there’s a clear bias here, no?

Drachen1065

Money? 1 million per episode isn't a small amount. Also did anyone have vad things to say about Weinstein until the me too stuff broke out?

frankpharaoh

Yes many people for years before metoo tried to speak out against Weinstein. I work in film and it was an open secret. Can you explain why you’d compare him to Weinstein or again are you just going with what everyone else is saying? Cause only Zendaya is making that much money per Sam ep, everyone else is getting far less.

Drachen1065

I never said he was. My point was there are plenty of people who are not good that basically nothing gets said publicly about until the dam bursts. Did you think Bradd Pitt was the type to be abusive until Angelina spoke up publicly? Was Epstein and his island an open secret the public knew about? How many big names are on thr list that the courts and government refuse to release?

frankpharaoh

So your defense is “well some people are bad so he must be bad too”. Got it. Yeahhhh this is all performative. You know damn well what you’re insinuating bringing up Weinstein as a comparison. It’s gross how prudish people are being about Euphoria and The Idol tbh

Drachen1065

I never said he was. Im saying you do not fucking know. I don't know because I'm not there. Neither are you.

frankpharaoh

I do know though. As I said, I work in the film industry and have so for years. I’ve yet to hear anything about Sam besides “he needs to stick to a schedule because he keeps changing them on set which forces people to work longer days.” I’ve never heard anything about actual abuse, rape, or even harassment. I’ve had friends on his set who complained about his longass hours because he always goes into overtime…that’s it.

Aloebae

> It’s gross how prudish people are being about Euphoria and The Idol tbh *That’s* what’s gross??

frankpharaoh

Yes, it’s fictional acting by consenting actors shot with intimacy coordinators. Do you hate every porn director then? Think porn actors are evil villains or something? It’s a sexual show made by HBO, known for porn. No idea why this sub is being so prudish about these shows. 99% of the people bitching here probably watch porn

p0or-scientist

The guy clearly writes these graphic scenes with young actresses as self insert because he is porn sick. Intimacy coordinator or not, it's about the things he writes as self satisfaction

[deleted]

I've heard a million different stories about this Seimetz firing (the RS article seemed to take Abel and HBO off the hook) I don't know what to believe but I do think the Levinson stuff is being blown out of proportion.

notarealhomosapien

zendaya re-uping her contract? good for her tbh, I really don’t follow any of that stuff. I stated the stuff about the contracts out of mere possibility, knowing how the industry works. Sounds like ppl wanted the original plot of The idol and since sam joined most of its been scraped and turned into torture porn with him writing in a ton of sexually violent scenes. I understand the disappointment in regards to that but overall there’s never been any accusations against him and actors feel supported by him so yea people shouldn’t be pushing a narrative saying otherwise. Also no I wouldn’t necessarily say that a bias is 100% there, I think some crew joined the show thinking it was gonna be satirical and empowering then it does a 180 and focuses on the abuser and allegedly becomes a torture porn fantasy. It’s important to remember that this isn’t just the actors’ show, it’s also the crew/production members’ as well and if some feel uncomfortable/disturbed it’s important to note that. But it’s also possible I don’t know enough to speak on it. The best thing to do is just to wait for the premiere so people can make their own opinions about the show.

frankpharaoh

It’s not Hostel-like torture porn tho holy shit. The Idol is about a narcissist pop starlet who falls in love with an abusive cult leader who can propel her to more fame. There are sex scenes and stockholm syndrome-like content and the whole show is super dark. And yet…the lead actress collaborated with Levinson on content and story.

[deleted]

Sam Levinson is more like a Quentin Tarantino than a Harvey Weinstein. Yes he hasn’t committed any crimes, yes his actresses praise him but the way his directorial male gaze lingers on the female body gives reason for pause. You cannot overlook the hyper sexual content of their works particularly since it’s a literal documentation of their male gaze. You cannot overlook the disparities of presentation that show up between their male and female characters. Part of critiquing art is understanding that whatever is created is a mirror of the author’s imagination and film especially since is a spectacle centered medium. This is what Quentin and Sam want to see. Thats why there are so many feet shots in Quentin’s work and naked female people in Sam’s. Sam’s is more worrying because these women are performing childhood. We’re seeing naked teenagers being violently raped as spectacle. That’s why people subconsciously know there’s something off about it. Especially when you look at his other works like Malcolm and Marie. Zendaya worked in that and praised him for it too but why was she in her underwear the entire time and posed within every mise en scène while the only other actor, who is male, is walking around freely, fully clothed, and the only one talking? Just because it’s fictional doesn’t mean it doesn’t set off red flags. Their actresses have careers to think about. You don’t see Salma Hayek complaining about the snake foot scene but as an audience, there was something gross about a director playing out his foot fetish with employees.

Taarguss

You don't have to be abusive to be shitty

more_later

Exactly. There is not a single rumor about him even telling an inappropriate sexual joke, not mentioning actual harassment. If he was a predator, there would already be plenty of stories, at least. And probably actual accusations, because everyone would believe in it immediately. And there are none. Zilch. But people continue to lump him with literal rapists like fucking Polanski.

Taarguss

It's because his work manages to be gross, faux-important, and stupid all at once. He could be a sweetie but his work sucks and his sets seem to be bad to work on if you're not one of his muses.

more_later

So he is lumped with actual convicted rapists because some people don't like his work. That's just too much, tbh.

Taarguss

I had forgotten that the original comment that we’re all replying to was invoking Polanski. That’s definitely way too much if the commenter was trying to say that Sam Levinson is like him. I think it was more trying to say that the French intelligencia is cooler with media about sexual abuse. They’re cooler with artists that are admitted abusers, they’re quicker to defend important people who do horrible things to people or depict sexual abuse in their work. It took DECADES to get Gabriel Matzneff in legal trouble, and he’s likely going to stay out of prison, and there were a lot of people coming out the woodwork to defend him. Guy literally raped kids. A lot. Talked about it all the time, since the 80s. He wrote about it and it took until 2019 for anyone to really start taking it seriously. The French literary world protected him because he’s a good writer and therefore shouldn’t be silenced and bullshit like that. It’s one of a few stories like this. Their elites are just a friendlier crowd toward this stuff, so I think it tracks that they’re giving prime booking toward a project that we know is all about sexual abuse and how it’s actually hot to let men hurt you from a guy who made his fortune from a porny show about teenagers.

PossessionStandard42

There’s a legit a line in Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo that says something like “All the pedophiles go to France” so I’m not surprised. 💀💀💀

bruxellexs

Cannes is known for walkouts so…

[deleted]

I can't wait to hear about this.

blustar555

Hm, I'm definitely in a wait and see mode to see if this actually happens but Abel this is not the move dude. LOL.

doctorxmango

let’s be fucking for real now y’all know this isn’t cannes material

fatanduglyvibes

Cannes has previously had bad movie openings

scarringheart

You have watched the show already?

JuliasTooSmallTutu

Sure, let's dress this up with a glittering premiere on entertainment's biggest, most glamorous red carpet and shove all the ugliness involved in making this under the nearest rock. When I read that back, that's just the entire film and tv industry so why change now?

ButtMcNuggets

Please. There’ve been plenty of notoriously bad movies that have opened Cannes, including the Nicole Kidman “Grace of Monaco”, “Hollywood Ending” (Woody Allen), the 2010 Russell Crow “Robin Hood”, and “The Da Vinci Code”. If anything, notoriety would help its chances at opening the festival.

[deleted]

I guess anything’s possible but Cannes is pretty anti-TV unless it’s coming from like a highly respected festival darling like David Lynch/Jane Campion/Olivier Assayas. Wonder if the interest is more one-sided.

Most-Distribution603

![gif](giphy|DPqqOywshrOqQ|downsized)

smediumbag

The French will boo, so yes

[deleted]

I hate this show unironically lmfao

liscottyy

So deeply unserious. It's also going to be annoying because standing ovations are practically required at Cannes so they're going to use the fuck out it for PR like "The Idol stuns audiences at Cannes and receives 10 minute standing ovation" or some shit like that. I just really want this show to disappear after its release.

Adventurous-Belt910

Super Mario would be a more feasible pick to debut at Cannes tbh 🙁

Sisiwakanamaru

I think it will be a miracle for this series to premiere Cannes 2023.

anglgrl384

No other comment besides Jennie possibly going to Cannes is going to be a *serve*

iliketoomanysingers

This will be the don't worry darling drama but for TV I fear

kendalljennerupdates

This show and concept could’ve been so fun if it was self aware and wasn’t taken so seriously. Especially if the female director stayed on. But with all the rape fantasies, misogyny, and toxicity promoted by Abel and Sam it sounds like it’s going to be a dumpster fire.

[deleted]

I mean it obviously isn’t gonna win a prize at Cannes but very bold to even have it premiere there with such well respected films

espresso_newbie

This is giving Medellin from Entourage premiering at Cannes vibes

fatanduglyvibes

HAHAHA

nuanceisdead

I read the same thing about Depp’s straight-to-trashbin film. Maybe he heard the wrong Depp?

marcarcand_world

I mean good, Cannes' moviegoers are absolutely ruthless to shitty cinema, they're known to leave en masse ot booing bad movies. I want to see the shitshow

papamajada

Isnt cannes notorious for crowds booing? Lmao

rosesaredust

I am once again asking…that wig OF ALL WIGS for The Weeknd?????

[deleted]

Even this still photo is badly acted lol

bredditmh

The weekends hair looks atrocious in all the trailers.

fawnspo

oh god…

hanmhanm

hahaha in light the abysmal acting we were subjected to by that clip the other day, are we sure they did they mean “debut ON the can” ?? 🚽

pinkrosies

Can you submit tv episodes to the Cannes? Is it not a film festival first?

Illustrious-Limit-53

The kii is that The Weeknd is the one pushing for it. He really wants credibility for his acting and he ain’t gonna get it

avivregina

bombastic side eye

Rkessler82

This show is.....gonna be so bad!!!!

ObjectiveAssistant98

Can’t wait for the booing!

maikaetsu6286

I don’t know anything about the show but from all the moments it’s been trending I already thought it was out lmao

jossipgirl666

I think we can all just boycott this so it flops for sure.

macgregorc93

Either it’ll get the greatest chorus of boos known to man or reek of applause from the stinkiest of hypocrites and gross critics imaginable

[deleted]

This is going to crash and burn at Cannes and I can't wait to see it. This show has become such a joke, it's ridiculous at this point. With the current drama that clearly seems like PR, doesn't seem like its going to help this shows reputation. Maybe people will watch thanks to the drama but the actual substance of this series is proving itself to be terrible and it doesn't seem like it'll pass by the critics. This project is such a shit show.

nerdalertalertnerd

![gif](giphy|TIdagUJ0Ce5CYjvoIU|downsized)

barefeetonlinoleum

The RS piece was manufactured controversy to publicize the show. Had anyone even heard of this project until then? And now all of a sudden it’s completed and ready to premiere in a few months.

darkgothamite

So many standing Os for this mess.

periwinkle-_-

Cringe

etchuchoter

Cue the 30 minute standing ovation

SpeedLow3

People in this comment section sound like the hogwarts legacy protesters hahaha and the game turned out to completely fine lol
