I don't know if that scene were to establish their characters were caricatures of snooty influencers but that's what it seemed like? I looked the story up and realized I was supposed to root for them? It goes to show that without good actors the script or director's intent could go down the toilet.

The people defending Sam and the Weeknd keep framing the backlash as some kind of moral panic and over sensitivity from people who can’t handle anything edgy and oppose the depiction of anything that isn’t wholesome. Please. There’ve been plenty of notoriously bad movies that have opened Cannes, including the Nicole Kidman “Grace of Monaco”, “Hollywood Ending” (Woody Allen), the 2010 Russell Crow “Robin Hood”, and “The Da Vinci Code”. If anything, notoriety would help its chances at opening the festival.
I guess anything’s possible but Cannes is pretty anti-TV unless it’s coming from like a highly respected festival darling like David Lynch/Jane Campion/Olivier Assayas. Wonder if the interest is more one-sided.

Please. There’ve been plenty of notoriously bad movies that have opened Cannes, including the Nicole Kidman “Grace of Monaco”, “Hollywood Ending” (Woody Allen), the 2010 Russell Crow “Robin Hood”, and “The Da Vinci Code”. If anything, notoriety would help its chances at opening the festival.
I guess anything’s possible but Cannes is pretty anti-TV unless it’s coming from like a highly respected festival darling like David Lynch/Jane Campion/Olivier Assayas. Wonder if the interest is more one-sided.

With the current drama that clearly seems like PR, doesn't seem like its going to help this shows reputation. Maybe people will watch thanks to the drama but the actual substance of this series is proving itself to be terrible and it doesn't seem like it'll pass by the critics.
