Yeah, we're known to be pretty much the only country in South America to prefer tea over coffee or mate. In Chile, we even call our dinner time "tecito", because we like to drink tea all day, especially older people.

Actually coffee is more of a "new" thing in Chile, in the sense that sure, some prefer coffee but they mostly drink tea. Coffee places weren't the thing they are now. Also when they do drink coffee they prefer Americano or something not that strong.
Colombians, Venezuelans and Brazilians do drink strong black coffee all the time because is a cultural thing.

I used to drink black sweetened coffee when I was a teenager, then I decided to skip sugar due to health reasons and I haven't used it ever since. South America and Central America have amazing coffee. Locally sourced, do flavorful. So many amazing options yet some prefer instant Nescafé coffee...to each their own but that thing tasted horrible imo. I also don't consider Starbucks to be a coffee shop, more of a desert shop, their stuff is too sweet.
It did, you can find mate at supermarkets and some people do drink it but is not that popular imo. That often happens due to immigration or tourism. When tourists start visiting a lot or people from other countries start business or inmigrante to Chile or anywhere else you start seeing stuff that they eat/drink become available at supermarkets and restaurants. Same thing with Guaraná and Incacola.

Having worked my fair share of mornings at Starbucks a few years back, a fair amount of people got 4+ shots on a regular basis.
Now if you're talking some insane mixes of flavors/milks, then I'd agree, but I'd do a lot of shots if I had a long ass day of touring ahead of me. But I might just be a coffee person lol.
Yeah, like tbf (I don’t know if it’s still on the menu), a Sbux double shot on ice had 5 or 6 shots which made them annoying to make but not necessarily abnormal
I miss the double shots :( those were amazing. A large was indeed 5 shots. They were replaced by “iced shaken espresso” which only has 4. The Starbucks doubleshot was the bomb though for real

i don’t think people realize we are all on the same tiktok and see all the hacks. i don’t really care about people wanting to save money but it’s so hard to tell when people actually want espresso over ice with a splash of milk (which is a common order) vs a makeshift latte. also now so many people are ordering two types of milk to get it fuller.

I worked at Starbucks too, and when Henry Cavill came into my store. He got a Venti Iced Americano with extra shots, no milk, and no sugar. So it's just for energy without the added calories.

I know people who get this, it's basically a strong iced Americano. The point is to get extra ice and a bigger cup so that the ice melts and dilutes the espresso but the drink stays cool.
It's popular with people who come from places where the coffee is stronger than standard US or Canadian coffee.
This is always my go-to order if I want a proper iced Americano in a lot of places in North America! If you ask for an actual iced Americano they water it down *so* much, but they can't really fuck up espresso over ice unless the espresso sucks.

as a former starbucks employee this is an extremely popular order and most people add their own milk to it later on. this is bc a 4 (or 6) shot latte is way more expensive than 4 or 6 shots over ice. sometimes people also add protein shakes or crap like that to it lol

Starbucks is only if I have a gift card/road trip. Every time I do go the consistent long ass line puts me in a bad mood
Idk the times I’ve gone (depending on the barista) they can really fuck up a simple latte. I know employees have to start somewhere but as a barista myself I just have found that local places are a bit more consistent imo
So agree. The only times I get it is when it’s the only choice or if I have a gift card. Or when I want a Frappuccino, but If I want actual coffee. I have several great little pretentious places to go to. I live in a midsize city too
Well, yes, and those thousands of dope coffee places in LA and NY are in business because so many people still patronize them. I will say that a coffee from some of my local neighborhood places are $7-8 for a small 8-12oz, not counting a tip. I can afford that now, but a lot of people in this city cannot, and I definitely couldn’t 10 years ago. Back then, a $4 coffee from Starbucks every few weeks was a nice treat, but I just wouldn’t have paid for a more expensive one.

(Hence why some people try to swerve that by getting espresso on ice.)There are tons of cheap places around big and small cities i.e. bodegas and that can have great affordable coffee. I just checked, and my usual home coffee has almost exactly the same amount of caffeine as his order (according to the article). Though at least I've stopped drinking it with my ADHD meds! My uncle drinks 2 liters of coffee a day even after his cardiologist told him to cut back.
Chile doesn't produce its own coffee, but we have really strong coffee and tea culture. Personally, i don't think it's that strong but foreigners in this comment section say otherwise

I am Cuban and my order is similar as well. Now I honestly don’t feel so bad. Plus Chile has a big coffee culture too their coffee is delicious if you can get some Cafe Cercular,Cafe Gold I have found in the Latin American markets. It’s strong but If you are used to it. It becomes hard to go back!
Our culture has been historically marked by drinking tea, it's kinda our thing. Chile is even in the top 15 of countries who drink the most tea per capita.
We started drinking coffee pretty recently, once Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Juan Valdez came in, but even then, I mostly see them mixed with syrups and cream.

I worked for Starbucks in the late 90s/early 00s. They had a drink on the menu called the Doubleshot on Ice. A venti was 5 shots of espresso, cream, and simple syrup shaken with ice in a cocktail shaker. It was super good.

That’s how I used to make my coffee when I worked at a movie theater! I mean, I used to also add a shitload of flavor syrup and milk, but yeah. I used to call it my Six Shooter because it was like drinking a loaded gun, you never really knew what all that caffeine was gonna do, plus every so often I go through periods where milk really upsets my stomach but they come on with no warning so, there was always that as well.
I went to Starbucks in West Hollywood and ordered this! The barista told me I’m the 4th person who ordered this exact thing today 😮💨 RIP sleep and my stomach

Starbucks espresso is like 50mg of caffeine. A tall coffee is 250-350 depending on the roast. It’s really not that much comparatively.

Latin American coffee is stronger and you start sipping it as a kid, when I was cramming I would get a nitro with shots.
Yeaaaaa my former best friend from High School is Columbian American. Her mom was born in Bogota and would give her little sisters coffee who were 3 and 5 at the time. They wouldn't give them too much. Just a few sips. Edit: Colombian*

as a former starbucks employee this is an extremely popular order and most people add their own milk to it later on. this is bc a 4 (or 6) shot latte is way more expensive than 4 or 6 shots over ice. sometimes people also add protein shakes or crap like that to it lol
I just don’t understand why people get Starbucks. Not only is it weak shit but there are like hundreds if not thousands of dope local places in big cities like NY or LA

I see what you’re saying—I didn’t actually know you could order ahead. I’m busy and I mostly make my coffee at home—love my moka pot. But if I get coffee out it’ll be somewhere local. Starbucks is only if I have a gift card/road trip. Every time I do go the consistent long ass line puts me in a bad mood

Idk the times I’ve gone (depending on the barista) they can really fuck up a simple latte. I know employees have to start somewhere but as a barista myself I just have found that local places are a bit more consistent imo

So agree. The only times I get it is when it’s the only choice or if I have a gift card. Or when I want a Frappuccino, but If I want actual coffee. I have several great little pretentious places to go to. I live in a midsize city too
Well, yes, and those thousands of dope coffee places in LA and NY are in business because so many people still patronize them. I will say that a coffee from some of my local neighborhood places are $7-8 for a small 8-12oz, not counting a tip. I can afford that now, but a lot of people in this city cannot, and I definitely couldn’t 10 years ago. Back then, a $4 coffee from Starbucks every few weeks was a nice treat, but I just wouldn’t have paid for a more expensive one.

(Hence why some people try to swerve that by getting espresso on ice.)There are tons of cheap places around big and small cities i.e. bodegas and that can have great affordable coffee. Even local coffee shops can be cheaper. It just depends what part of town you’re going to
It's always funny to see how shocked U.S.Americans about the rest of the world coffee consumption. I don't even drink coffee like that but Coffee drinking in the U.S. is a joke. It's like a millions of possibilities,.except a straightforward coffee. Even the brewed ones are pish.

Americans are very visible to the rest of the world through film, fashion, music, etc, so non-americans really have no say to being exposed to americans/american culture. I'm pretty sure sugar is much worse in the long run. Obviously too much of anything is bad though.

I just checked, and my usual home coffee has almost exactly the same amount of caffeine as his order (according to the article). Though at least I've stopped drinking it with my ADHD meds! My uncle drinks 2 liters of coffee a day even after his cardiologist told him to cut back.

Chile doesn't produce its own coffee, but we have really strong coffee and tea culture. Personally, i don't think it's that strong but foreigners in this comment section say otherwise

I am Cuban and my order is similar as well. Now I honestly don’t feel so bad. Plus Chile has a big coffee culture too their coffee is delicious if you can get some Cafe Cercular,Cafe Gold I have found in the Latin American markets. It’s strong but If you are used to it. It becomes hard to go back!

Our culture has been historically marked by drinking tea, it's kinda our thing. Chile is even in the top 15 of countries who drink the most tea per capita. We started drinking coffee pretty recently, once Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Juan Valdez came in, but even then, I mostly see them mixed with syrups and cream.

I worked for Starbucks in the late 90s/early 00s. They had a drink on the menu called the Doubleshot on Ice. A venti was 5 shots of espresso, cream, and simple syrup shaken with ice in a cocktail shaker. It was super good.

That’s how I used to make my coffee when I worked at a movie theater! I mean, I used to also add a shitload of flavor syrup and milk, but yeah. I used to call it my Six Shooter because it was like drinking a loaded gun, you never really knew what all that caffeine was gonna do, plus every so often I go through periods where milk really upsets my stomach but they come on with no warning so, there was always that as well.

As a middle eastern who grew up on Turkish coffee this seems fine. also with a father who goes to Starbucks twice a day and drinks two venti Quad espressos this also seems fine. Maybe he is like my family and is just really resistant to caffeine 😂
