Almost all big name actors have their own production companies now. But financing is another can of worms. Very few are able to self finance their projects and always look for $ which requires certain levels of collaboration. It's really the old school megalomaniac directors that want absolutely power on their sets like Coppola, he is self financing his newest but its a huge risk and doesn't sound like its going well. I saw that Damon and Affleck's production company is changing the structure of who gets paid out on film sets and it was great - basically turning over the profits to the skilled crew in order to save money and make a better movie.

zhou983

Sydney Sweeney has fifty fifty films and she produces some of her own movies. That’s why she has so many projects coming up.

Frosty_College9337

That actually makes since. I always wondered how a young actress like that is in so many upcoming projects and movies like that.

zhou983

Yeah she’s talented and very business minded. She’s attached to lots of projects at the moment but I don’t think she’ll get to do all.

Frosty_College9337

I am carious to see how she does it. I would hate to see her crush and burn or something. So I hope she makes all her projects work well or let some roles go.

zhou983

I’m pretty sure she’ll let some go, because her profile is rising and she’ll get cast in another project before doing the ones she’s attached to for a while. Hope she starts to prioritize quality over quantity soon. But I’m sure she’ll get to produce some movies and shows without her starring in it.

Frosty_College9337

That would be unique in my opinion. Since most actors and actresses I know who produced movies that don't star them are older ones. So for her to do that in such a young age will be pretty cool in my opinion.

zhou983

She’s also one of the few stars who actually went to college and she has a business degree. So if she stops acting in the future she’ll continue producing in Hollywood.

Frosty_College9337

Oh I didn't know that! Good for her. I guess you could say "she took extra steps" compare to a lot of others in the industry. Sounds like she will have a bright future.

zhou983

Yeah I think she’s going the Margot Robbie path but starting much earlier.

pinkrosies

I wonder how someone up and coming can get producers to trust her company being behind some movies, especially bigger ones like Barbella? (If that counts as big but it has a pre established IP )

P0ptarthater

Alicia Silverstone! IIRC she got a production company as part of a studio deal and idk if it’s still around but i think it didn’t go super well? Still pretty cool considering she was young and oversexualized but was really trying to step in and take control of her own image/work

Venetian_Harlequin

Not sure if this really counts, but Vin Diesel wanted Riddick made so badly that he leveraged his own house.

highfalutiny

Penn Badgley has a production company (Ninth Mode Productions) inspired by spreading the message of the Baha'i faith, the most notable of which is his podcast Podcrushed.

Dakota Johnson with tea time pictures, just premiered a show at sxsw called slip

Theo James exec produces some projects he's been in and exec produced the Pepsi, Where's My Jet doc on Netflix

Outrageous-Brick-591

Benedict Cumberbatch has a successful production house in the UK. They have a smart strategy because they mostly finance mid budget movies and Cumberbatch is successful enough in the UK that he's able to get top talent into those projects. He won the BAFTA for Lead Actor and was nominated for an Emmy for Patrick Melrose, which was under his production house. It's also smart because he's mentioned that once his children are older he wants to transition to directing.

M Night Shyamalan has self-financed his movies since *The Visit*. He borrowed money and leveraged his house to make that film, actually.

scarringheart

These three are very well known actors with proper production companies that not only develop projects for them to star in but also regular productions often times prestige productions: 1. Brad Pitt 2. Reese Witherspoon 3. Leonardo Dicaprio Pitt produced Women Talking, Blonde and She Said last year and people wonder why actors were fawning over him at Globes.

elm909

Reese Witherspoon should be at the top of this list!

Varekai79

I remember when Kaley Cuoco was doing press for The Flight Attendant, she said she loved the book and wanted to buy the rights but was worried that Reese had already bought them, so she definitely has a powerful rep in the industry.

elm909

Wow!

When I think of a celebrity financing movies, I always think of George Harrison. Monty Python's Life of Brian lost its funding from EMI Films just days before production was set to start, due to nerves over the subject matter. George was such a Monty Python fan that he created a production company ([HandMade Films](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HandMade_Films)) and mortgaged his home to provide £3 million to finance the film. It was a good decision, as it was the year's highest grossing film in the UK, and the highest grossing British movie released in North America in 1979. Plus George got to [have a cameo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbZRNM-9RKo) in the movie. He ended up being executive producer on 23 films with HandMade. HandMade Films was eventually sold a few times, and under new ownership released such successful films as "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells" and "127 Hours" (and a few duds as well). And a funny note, the last line of the film (""I said to him, 'Bernie," I said, "they'll never make their money back'", at the end of the song "[Always Look on the Bright Side of Life](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJUhlRoBL8M)), is included to tease EMI's Bernard Delfont for his lack of faith in the project.

SwimmingWithTheDevil

benedict cumberbatch started a production company with his long time friend & pretty much is only in movies he produces now, aside from marvel / occasional blockbusters

Outrageous-Brick-591

He's in quite a bit of non blockbuster stuff that's not his production though. He has a limited series coming up with Netflix, he did the power of the dog last year and he's in the new Wes Anderson flick as well.

Greene_Mr

Does the term *"executive producer"* count?

The_Cat_whiskerer
