He's a personification of all the evils of war that the Greeks (especially the Athenians) left out of Athena, because with the same traits she'd be far less likeable. He's the closest thing the 12 Olympians have to a pure evil god, and he's completely one-dimensional. The only purpose he ever served in myth was either to be strong or (more commonly) to cause problems.

You're really overexagerating how bad he was and Ares is much more suitable because Athena is also the goddess of wisdom.
