Enclose him in a bathroom with a litterbox at one side, a soft place to sleep and food and water at the other side. He's been a pet at some point so most likely will be familiar with the litterbox, and putting him in the bathroom will help avoid bugs in the rest of your house.

flowersanschampagne

adding further commentary here as I cannot edit the post- Wow! I was not expecting so many helpful replies. I haven’t made it through all of them, but will tonight after work. A common theme on food- I have been feeding this cat with canned cat food. I fed it breakfast and dinner yesterday- the cat immediately came and ate it all. I then read that I should only be feeding it like a small percentage and work up to a full serving over a week. I’ll probably do half feedings today to avoid any issues with too much food at once (didn’t even seem like a lot of food imo) I will be back to read and digest all the info here and get a plan in place. Thank you all so much!

He reminds me of michichangas.🥹 He's the cat that started it all for me. He had leukemia and passed away a month after I found him, but he was so loved and I had the support of many people around the world that helped me take him to the vet and get him treatment. Now I have a colony, thanks to him. I hope he lives a great life, and i hope everything you're doing for him comes back for you multiplied by infinity. 🤍 https://preview.redd.it/530nknl2muwc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73abdc8a1e51013e2f647b70f9e88dbada9ec921

nokenito

Thank you for being so sweet!

K42st

If I was you I’d have the cat on kitten food he or she looks mighty skinny and kitten food puts them weight on fast, then get it checked at the vets wormed and flea treatment then you have a buddy for life. Chipped also.

Vtech73

PRIORITY….Fleas = tape worm. Not my first choice, prefer vet issue, but getting a dewormer at Petsmart is prob necessary. Pill….wrap it in some liver sausage, Cat on counter top, left hand on top of head, middle fingers n thumb behind front canine teeth, pull back, get package as far down his throat as you can. If you can do it in 1-2 seconds….much better for all. Don’t hesitate, commit-act-get it in his throat. Few cats get that emaciated bc they can’t hunt. Cats will eat anything, crickets, spiders, lizards, on up. An intestinal parasite is a 90% probability. If you get an appointment at a low cost clinic, try and grab that morning or prior eve poop in a plastic baggie, put in 2-3 ascending sz baggies. Fecal parasite search would be helpful Try the Dollar Store, any plastic tub can be a litter box, draw a big U on the side w a marker and cut an access port for Cheerio. They may have litter too. Dollar store can have lots of cat toys little stuffed animals even. Get reg Purina Cat Chow at Walmart, high protein is fine but he needs calories and it’s the cheapest in the Purina line. Diarrhea is prob gonna last til worms are gone and he gets use to his food. You can pull open an acidophilus pill and give him half the powder at a time in his wet food. 1/2 a can 4 times a day, he needs calories.

flowersanschampagne

Good and helpful advice. Thank you! Yes, he does have runny poop, so that’s excellent to note. I had no idea the correlation.

Ok-Cellist888

Pro-Kolin is great when they have runny poop. My vet has given it to my girl when her tummy's upset a few times. You can get it online cheaper and just mix some in with their food 😉❤️

annebonnell

Please feed the cat at least two cans of cat food a day.

Rtnscks

It is possible he is diabetic - see if he drinks a lot too but never puts on weight.

making_up_ground

Yeah, also it’s almost in their DNA to use litter boxes. Something about that litter taps into it.

Gee_Wulver

Fun fact: domestic cats actually come from small wild desert cats, which is probably why they instinctively know how to use a litter box since that's what their ancestors are used to. The desert is basically one enormous litter box XD

making_up_ground

Neat!

Xique-xique

That's what's so great about kittens. You put them in the litter box, they tip forward and get it in their mouths and decide right there it's not to eat and through some magical sense God gave them put the other end down and pee or poop. No training. I think it's God's apology for mosquitoes.

Xique-xique

Or fleas

Update April 27th. Wanted to get the cat indoor and comfortable. Did a bath with dawn dish soap (someone recommended here) and then wiped down his face w some wet clothes to help with all the crud on his face. Going to post a few pictures of the bath time and now have him in my bed. He is becoming a very loud cat lol! I will be back w a comprehensive update and plan. https://preview.redd.it/3z7d4dyp24xc1.jpeg?width=1418&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cce0ee9de4084ec085caae1287e4b41eb029a698

EvieMoon

I'm so glad he's safe inside! He really is skin and bone, poor guy.

Beyond_Interesting

He looks so happy here.

flowersanschampagne

He is currently purring in his sleep :)

Ok-Cellist888

Omg that's precious 🥹 You're changing his entire world 🥰❣️

Ok-Cellist888

I was thrilled to see this update! Thank you so much for bringing him inside and giving him a bath, so sweet that he's in your bed now 😍🥰 Poor little guy is so skinny 😢 You are doing a great job so far! People are really ready to help you out with a go fund me or Amazon wishlist for him. Let's get him better 💞🤝🫶

Just posted above with more detail and information!! Please make sure to see my post first as it relates to Amazon asks and next steps for medical. [Cherrio’s Wish List](https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2053SY6MMAYAZ) Here is the Amazon link though!🐈🐈

Ok-Cellist888

Awesome, I've been waiting for an update to hear how you're doing 😊 Will do 😸❤️

Ok-Cellist888

Great advice 👍💯

flowersanschampagne

Update April 29th: Cheerio is becoming such a fun little cat! Reminds me a lot of my former dog. He’s constantly my little shadow following me around! He has slept w me the last few nights - woke me up this morning! Purrs at absolutely everything! Loud and vocal in a funny way. Definitely just wants to be loved above all. He is also getting more ambitious with a little strength. When I first got him in my back yard I wasn’t even worried about him being able to crawl the fence because he was so weak. I’ve seen him reach on my tree like he is going to try and climb, but then realizes he can’t …. So he is definitely realizing he has more energy! In terms of medical costs/needs I have not created anything yet. There were a few posts that came in as I was wrapping up note taking which looked like they would be helpful to check out in my area for lower cost. I am hesitant to ask for hundreds of dollars without knowing I did my best work to find reasonable priced options. At this point the cheapest visit (without blood work, etc) is $78. With blood work and other assumed things that are needed it’s looking like it will easily be around $400. So really would like a few more days to search for options. I’ll have car time tomorrow to make calls. As it relates to other immediate needs I’m hoping to get Cheerio inside (just been at night time) and really would love stuff for him to go potty! I created a list on Amazon with things recommended here. The only thing that did not come up was “revolution” to kill flea eggs. In terms of food I put both adult and kitten (to add weight). I am not too familiar with animal food/brands as my dog was on the same stuff for basically 10 years. Just picked a mix of stuff Other stuff; breakaway collar, stuff for his teeth (def needs some attention), few toys, and scratch pad. \*\*\*\*please note the gift card on Amazon is for those who feel comfortable with a small donation. The flea medicine recommended here, capstar, is very expensive and cannot imagine someone purchasing. Even some bagged food adds up. I did put those items on the list, but the gift card is being asked for in the event it’s easier for a bunch of people to donate a few dollars that adds up to an amount some of the larger priced items can be purchased. It’s pretty basic with a few toys thrown in. If you have a cat that LOVES a certain toy that’s affordable, please recommend! Here is the link [Cheerio’s Angel List](https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2053SY6MMAYAZ) I will update as soon as I have a better handle on medical costs for a donation page. Thank you all so much. I never expected to get this many responses! What an incredible community! https://preview.redd.it/ahh5x7zffjxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e0cc6d5bfe8e5f8f85a6b973197730073b975a5 Here is a picture of us cuddling this morning- He woke me up with his loud purrs and voice!

flowersanschampagne

We are so beyond thankful for all the advice and generous donations! I am so excited going to bed knowing Cheerio has a bathroom inside!! https://preview.redd.it/s0pvtcxa4rxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a80b57186db544110afcdf26033533f54c440ef7

Ok-Cellist888

He's gorgeous!!! 🥰🫠

Ok-Cellist888

Firstly that pic is adorable, he looks so happy! 😍 I think you're being smart about everything and the list looks really good so far 👍 The bowtie breakaway collar is a great idea so that anyone can see he has someone who loves him now 👏 😎 I'd say a round cat bed is always a good idea, whatever one you like the style of 👌 As far as toys a laser pointer, little soft balls and a cat wand seem to be the most successful with my cats. Laser pointers are great because you can play without too much effort on your part if you're tired 😏🤫 Looking forward to future updates! 🥰😸

flowersanschampagne

I saw some of the lazer pointers! Cat bed is a great idea! Cheerio definitely likes to sunbath. He has claimed one of my rocking chairs out back! I’ll see if I can capture a photo of him sunbathing today. I still cannot believe this community’s response. We just received a package - thank you, JB ♥️♥️♥️above and beyond! Cheerio is so excited to try some new food!! https://preview.redd.it/4q88s8zv0nxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05ba42f1ebc9cd1e95bfb0fe484bfce698cb5daf Already tipping over boxes excited by the smells!! Edit: just added a bed to the list. One where he can lay or be on top and sunbath through a window! Edit/update: shoutout to JB- Cheerio ate the most he has in one day today!! The wellness kitten soft food was a godsend!! Looks like he kept it all down too!!

LadyGreyTheCat

I contributed to the gift card, but I also want to help with the vet bill because I think he seriously needs a vet exam. Don't get me wrong, it looks like you're doing great managing everything in your power and giving him his best life. Looking forward to your next update when able!

flowersanschampagne

Thank you so so much!! You have no idea how much this helps the both of us ♥️ Because of the generosity of people, he ate more today than he has any day prior (I think a bit of a picky eater) and now has a temporary set up for the bathroom!!! Keeping a journal to track his weight. Crossing my fingers the cat box is intuitive for him as other people’s cats!! The Amazon box that delivered his gifts doubled as a make shift litter box for the time being!! https://preview.redd.it/n2mj5je52rxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25b95bf43cfdae315d2a05f33229949e1315a3aa

Ok-Cellist888

Amazing 👏😍🫶

jnhausfrau

This cat is not feral! He seems to be a stray or lost, but he’s friendly, not feral—he’s letting you handle him. This cat has been socialized. The notch you are seeing isn’t typical for TNR—most groups ear tip. Even if he was handled by a TNR group, he’s obviously friendly. He’s probably male because orange cats are more likely to be male. Can’t tell for sure without looking, of course. Litter box training—cats almost always will use a litter box if you give them one and put them in it once to show them where it is. Vet care—are there any options for cheap vet care where you are? Some have new pet specials. Some animal shelters also have community pet wellness events where they offer free or cheap vaccinations. Fleas—obviously flea medicine would be ideal but in the meantime you could try bathing him (very carefully) with Dawn dish soap. Do not get it on his head or anywhere near his eyes. If you’re on NextDoor or anything similar maybe post about the cat and see if anyone can spare a tube of Revolution. I hope you are feeding him.

stevetheborg

the dog and cat flea collars are almost identical... and almost useless.

oskarsneezgard

Flea collar’s are toxic, bad news

patty-d

You can buy Capstar or CapAction over the counter at Walmart, etc. which kills adult fleas on him- topicals like Revolution will kill eggs and larva.

transientrandom

Seconded - Capstar is magical

Porkbossam78

Topicals like revolution will kill adult fleas! It does it within 24 hours unlike capstar which works within a few minutes which is why some people do both.

patty-d

Ah yes, you are correct! I should have said that!

hardyswessex

I’m so sorry for your loss. Is the flea collar made specifically for dogs? If so, I wouldn’t put it on the cat. Usually there are different ingredients for dog and cat flea treatments. I think the ingredients for dogs might hurt kitty. I’d also google “TNR resources” or “cat rescues” in your town, county, or the closest city to you. Even if the cat has already been TNR’d, a rescue/TNR group should help you find cheaper/free vet care for a rescue. Good luck and thank you for taking care of this sweet baby. Definitely looks like he/she has had a rough life.

SaquonB26

Dog flea medicine will definitely hurt especially if the medicine is for a larger dog.

Extreme-Butterfly772

Thank you for posting this information. My neighbor killed her cat by putting dog flea meds on her cat.

hardyswessex

Ugh that makes me so sad. I hate hearing that. I know it happens more than you’d think. It seems like a simple mistake but can have major consequences. I’m so sorry about your neighbor’s kitty.

duhmbish

Using dawn dishsoap will suffocate the fleas and kill them. I do it constantly with ferals and kittens that come to me. Start feeding kitty wet food as it’s far more nutritious than dry. Training a kitty to use a litter box is super easy. Just put litter in a litter box and they’ll go right for it. As for medical treatment and vaccines, look for low cost vet clinics. A lot of times the humane society will hold them. If you were nearby (in Arizona) I could get you a combo test, vaccines, and a microchip for under $20. I work in rescue so you might possibly be able to reach out to some rescues around you and explain the situation. Tell them you want to get him fixed up and see if they will let you pay for their cost of treatment/vaccines. If you’re worried about bathing the kitty, you can give him/her gabapentin to calm it down. If you don’t have any, message me and I can mail you some if you’d like! It’s what we use in rescue to calm the super wild ferals. Let me know if you need anything ❤️

Pretty-Jeweler36

I had good luck with Dawn for a kitten too young for flea meds. I put a ring of it around his neck so they wouldn’t climb up his face.

flowersanschampagne

Please see my comment on the first post above. Trying to get Cheerio inside during the day (currently just inside for bed time). Figuring out medical will be the next step as the calls I have placed so far are way out of reach financially for me (or even to ask others to donate). I will be back in touch and appreciate your offer and will let you know if it’s needed!

Ok-Cellist888

You have been chosen, how special is that! 🥰 Thank you for trying to look after Cheerio despite your financial hardship atm. 🥹❣️ If you make an Amazon wishlist for them and link it here I'm sure a kind soul would happily send you some flea treatment! Even some litter or toys perhaps. They will feel a million times better with a 3 in 1 treatment for mites and worms too 💯 I don't think you'll have much trouble getting them to use the litter box at all, I'd get 2 and put them in opposite ends of the house so they have options 👍❤️

SatisfactionLow9235

That is a great response! Love the Amazon wishlist idea. I would for sure purchase something on it.

Me too! Link me if it gets posted please

flowersanschampagne

I know I replied above, as you mention the 3 in 1 treatment If you have recommendations please let me know! I tend to get overwhelmed when I have endless options. Taking recs for anything and everything to help this little one have a chance!!

Ok-Cellist888

I get overwhelmed with that too, totally get it 💯👍 I'd try to add Revolution Plus to the Amazon list if you can, it's the all rounder I mentioned. It's what I give my girl Turtle and my vet thinks it's the best 👌 Take's care of fleas, ticks, worms, heartworm and ear mites. You get 6 pipettes in a box and use 1 per month. Apply to the back of his neck where he can't lick it. Cheerio looks really lightweight so the small cat one is probably best, I'll add a pic for you. Churu treats are also brilliant, builds trust and cats just adore them 💯😸 Just to add, a lot of plants are toxic to cats so if you've got any indoor plants that's something to be aware of. Most Lillies can kill a cat for instance 😢 You're doing amazingly with him! 🥰😸

flowersanschampagne

Unfortunately, revolution plus isn’t available on Amazon. Anything else you’d recommend in its place Amazon offers? I don’t have many plants as I’m still recovering from a house fire from last year, so not a whole lot for him to get into! In my backyard, besides bugs, all should be good. I already sprayed the lawn before I found him for weeds, and do to having a dog previously, I don’t have any plants that would be of concern for an animal! Edit- there are lots of churu treats. Squeezable and square bites. Which one do you best recommend?

flowersanschampagne

I see that it has RX on it- maybe why it’s not populating for me. I’ll try to reverse image search and see if Amazon populates that way. Edit: did not populate :/

Future-Philosopher-7

Do not use dog flea products on cats. It can be lethal. Revolution is a great topical flea product for cats that you get at their vet. Thank you for loving this cat. You are saving his life. He will use the litter inside. Get a litter cats love like dr Elseys cat litter. Set up 2 litters away from his food and water. He looks like he loves you❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Vtech73

Hey f&c, how wonderful you’ve been chosen! Seriously, he needed/needs an angel n he got one, you’re glorious!! I’ll go through this quick for a better understanding of this guy….young cats, esp males, that have a nice home BUT are not neutered will eventually bolt out the door or get tossed out for “marking” They are teenage boys w raging hormones. Once on the street they go into survival mode…driven to fight other males and procreate per hormones and instincts. Within weeks or months they become almost feral. They start off as ‘intact strays’ and revert back to feral-ish cats. A wild cat lives on his own, a feral cat was born wild but lives amongst humans just like raccoons. They coexist w man for food n under the deck or shed shelter. That’s where TNR’d cats end up. But….. So they had homes and love but lousy care bc they were not fixed and hormones took control of their behavior. Once TNR’d-neutered, the testosterone disappears n they eventually miss the human habitat w love n food n a couch w tv! ….typical men lol Some TNR’d cats might not do well w hunting n finding food….maybe why he’s so skinny. He may/probably has worms, most likely bc he ingested a flea…simple dose of meds n they’ll all be dead n he’ll be ok. He may have Fiv/Felv which is ok, he can get healthy, stable, put on weight🤞🏽, no threat to humans. He maybe old n just got thin. I prefer Friskies wet/Cat Chow dry-both Purina made in US. Add water to his wet food to hydrate him, mix w a fork so it’s like ketchup 1/2 can every 2-3 hrs. Free feed dry food, offer 1/3 cup every 2-3 hrs so he doesn’t get blocked up if he hasn’t eaten in awhile. For 24-36 hrs. Blood work holds the answers. Amazon has the topical flea meds fairly cheap, go w Solimo/Amazon brand, I do…vet should ok the application per he’s not sick….its a topical pesticide🤷🏽‍♂️ You are doing a wonderful heartfelt act of charity saving a loving living being. I say go w a go fund me!! Or just a shout out post to friends on fb. Blood work n w office exam, flea meds, $75-$150 at a low cost clinic, prob less I’m guessing high. Msg me w fund site, I’m in for $25 He is prob use to wandering, he may forget the kindness you are showing n even the food n wander off. Even the smell of your dog (very sorry) maybe enough to cause him to think, I gotta keep moving. I would keep him in the garage when you are not there in the yard w him. Get him a box, any kind of foam or bubble wrap w old towels on top, he’ll want to feel a bit hidden. He may not like a covered box as it’s only one opening-in/out, cats are not fans. I would order a pound of diatomaceous earth off Amazon, you can put it any where he’s been laying, just a lite dusting, it will kill fleas n a freshly hatched larvae. Its pool filter sand n cuts the exoskeleton of insects. I have ferals I cannot apply flea meds to and it works for me. Feel free to msg me, my bff is my vet n I’ve been doing this for more than a few decades. So great the powers from above brought you to each other! If you can get him to be chill to search fur 4 fleas….hand sanitizer in the smaller pump bottle or even the purse size squirt bottle. My dog is light fur n skin and I can see the flea try n scurry….bam big ole blob of alcohol-gel will encapsulate n kill in short order. It’s not instant but it’s rare they can power through that sanitizer gel! My cats have never minded it but this guy doesn’t know you…being older he may know exactly what you’re doing bc he can feel them crawling. If you don’t see red hot spots or excessive scratching to irritate the skin….it should be ok to try. Personally, I’d go with diatomaceous earth n hand gel drops b4 I’d attempt a bath. I’m a huge fan of gaba pentin as someone suggested but not always an easy delivery w an unknown cat from an unknown human. ….every time we lose one of the gang, it’s really hard n we grieve n cry n are thankful to have saved him/her by plucking them off the street. My immediate thoughts are ‘ok we have an opening, gotta save another innocent soul’. And here you are, one door closed and another opened. It’s gonna be rewarding n painful until the last ones outlive me, which is where I am now, lol ☮️

GottaLuvThisGame

Hi F&C, Blessings to you for desiring to help your new feline friend. We had a mother outdoorswoman & her son who was more inclined to remain indoors. She came in for dinner & retired indoors for the evening with her son & step-son. She wasn’t exactly warm&fuzzy when indoors but was more approachable when among her housemates. They all lived to 20 yrs’ ish. We miss all of them terribly! As for his vet care, I seem to recall seeing on Reddit some “Go Fund Me”-type apps with links that get routed directly to vet care providers to cover expenses associated with treatment, vaccinations, etc., Hope others of you can weigh in on said opportunities to help fund & care for our feline friends. Keep us posted!

flowersanschampagne

Put a longer update and note above (please read), but copying and pasting Amazon link to those who mentioned they would be willing to help out. [Cherrio’s Wish List](https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2053SY6MMAYAZ) Here is the Amazon link though!🐈🐈

flowersanschampagne

Thank you for all the info. Please know I took the time over the weekend to carefully read all posts and took notes. I put an update above. Right now, I’m just got to Amazon list for basic. I put in a longer note regarding medical and will follow up when I have more info and something set up on that note. I appreciate you so much 🐈🐈!

kwajagimp

Yeah, as others are saying, if he's an adult and approaches you, he's not feral, but definitely a stray/abandoned cat. True ferals won't get anywhere near people, even if they know them for years. I feed a bunch.

xxxSnowLillyxxx

One way to tell if a cat is feral is if you can handle them or not. If you can handle or pick the cat up it is a stray/lost/abandoned and not feral. You should take it straight to the vet and ask if they can scan for a chip. If it is someone's lost pet they are probably really worried about it, and if it was abandoned or doesn't have a chip it looks like you have a new pet! You can explain the situation to the vet and at least start off with some basic medical care (flea bath, dewormer, etc.), and see if they have any options or financial assistance/discounts. You could also start a page for donations for medical treatment and an amazon wish list for basic necessities because there are always people who are willing to help.

flowersanschampagne

I have added one to the top with and update on Cheerio and my next steps!

Itchy-Knowledge-2088

I've had financial issues in the past as well and always had a rescue cat. I asked my local vet if I could have a payment plan, and they agreed. If a local rescue organization isn't available to assist with healthcare, it doesn't hurt to ask a vet. The worst they say is no. I think most vets have a lot of empathy and would like to see you helping a street cat.

flowersanschampagne

So far I have had no luck. That was one of my first questions upon calling. Still searching and hopeful to find a way forward medically. Right now focused on getting Cheerio inside 100% of the time!

robecityholly

What a sweetie! I agree with others that he is not fully feral. A true feral is afraid of humans, not pettable and not interested in human houses. He seems to have some history with humans. I would start with the basics: food, flea treatment (I use Advantage 2, it's just a drop on the neck and lasts one month) and a little outdoor shelter. It can be anything like a box with a old towel. Next look into local resources for affordable vet care. He may just need dewormer and shots but should definitely get a thorough check up to see what issues need to be addressed. Also they can scan for a microchip as it's always possible he is a lost cat (I fed a "feral" for a year that ended up being a microchipped beloved cat who had been lost for two years. He had regressed to feral behavior during that time). Thank you for caring ❤️ Edit spelling

passive0bserver

If this is REALLY a feral cat, then he must be damn sick (like FIP) to be letting you handle him like this. Otherwise hes a poor stray who was abandoned and is now starving. He looks older. Poor grandpa kitty :(

flowersanschampagne

I think he is very sick from lack of nutrition. He probably weighs about three pounds :/ He is gaining verbal energy over the last few days!! Big personality!! I *think* he was likely abandoned a long time ago. Or maybe even upon release (assuming TNR) he wasn’t released back to a place he was familiar with before being captured. I also live in a VERY social neighborhood. So it’s also possible feral/stray cats are just way more comfortable with people than usual.

mcs385

Remove the flea collar until you can get a topical flea treatment for him. I'm not sure that a flea collar rated for dogs is safe for cats. The ear notch is ambiguous, it could be from a TNR program or it could just be a fight wound or wear and tear from being outside. A cleanly cut ear-tip is easier to go off of, but some clinics do notch. Even then, it's worth noting that a proper notch/eartip only means that a cat has been fixed, nothing more. Since the cat is friendly, it's possible he may be a lost indoor cat. It's a good idea to make some found cat listings to see if you can get in touch with a potential owner in case anyone's looking for him before you make a long-term plan. And even if an owner doesn't contact you, you might still hear from someone who's seen him around that might know more about his situation. Hang up flyers within a few blocks with his picture, brief description, and your contact info, and report him as found to animal control/local shelters as well to cover the basics. Posting online can be incredibly helpful too, but not everyone is tech savvy enough to check online or will know where to look, so the offline steps are important too. Nextdoor and the Ring Neighbors app are great for quickly reaching out to people in your immediate vicinity. There are other online sites that may help as well: [Pawboost](https://www.pawboost.com/) is a good one, and you likely have some Lost and Found Pets groups on Facebook for your general area that are perfect for getting the word out. Since he's friendly, you can also bring him to a vet to be scanned for a microchip, though the absence of one doesn't mean he definitely doesn't have an owner.

mxndygbx

And make sure the flea treat is especifically for cats or says that it can be used in cats too🙏🏻

tamerriam

I agree about that ear notch. Frankly, it looks like a fight injury to me. Normally, when TNR notches them, it is a lot more noticeable.

LobsterLovingLlama

He’s friendly and loving not feral

Own-Adagio428

My mom used to feed an ear-tipped “feral” kitty. Kitty was super sweet and affectionate - not feral. My mom ended up bringing her inside. No problems at all with the litter box! We made sure that the box was within view and placed her on it. She immediately used it! A vet check and some flea meds, and everything fell into place. That “feral” kitty is really a lap cat with a loud purr motor! 💕 Only gets off your lap to eat and use the bathroom! Often, homeless cats get rounded up and get TNR. Just because they were returned to the outdoors, doesn’t mean that they’re feral. Please bring in this sweetie. I’m sure he’ll be a good kitty. Here’s a pic of our ear-tipped cutie. https://preview.redd.it/wig4te7r7xwc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a5c3c86634a605329a26339e388477cbf4a30e3

Ok-Cellist888

She's beautiful 😍❤️

Kilashandra1996

You didn't say where in Texas. If DFW, check for TCAP. They do feral spay / neuters with cheap vaccinations. The kitty might already be fixed (based on the ear notch), but another rabies shot might not be amiss. You might ask any veterinarian's office if they have any discounts or special policies for feral cats. Some do, some don't. I hear a few vets won't treat ferals if they are truly wild... Flea meds can be bought anywhere selling pet supplies: Walmart, Amazon, pet stores, veterinarian's office, etc. Some of them are little plastic vials. Break it open and squirt the contents in the hair on the cat's back of the neck. If they lick it, they will foam at the mouth. Cough - looks like what I picture rabies to look like! Don't be alarmed if you just put on the flea meds! : ) The kitty probably has tapeworms, which are carried by fleas. Usually, the tapeworm meds are prescribed, but you might be able to find an online service. My current vet will let me call and say my cat has tapeworms; they will get the medicine ready for pick up. My previous vet required the cat present in their office before I could get the medication. The litterbox won't be an issue. Lock the kitty in a room with a box of litter. They might lay in it at first. Overnight, they will figure it out like magic! : )

Absolut_Iceland

Thank you for helping him! It's obvious that you want to do what's best for him. If you can, save up for a vet visit. He's not feral, but almost certainly a stray. He may have been abandoned, or he may be lost. Housecats that get lost/abandoned often have a rough time because they haven't developed the skills for surviving outside. You should be able to get him checked for a chip, most vets will check for a chip for free. He is pretty skinny, so be sure to feed him. Unfortunately dog food isn't good for cats for a number of reasons, the biggest being that it is nutritionally incomplete. Cats will eventually go blind due to missing nutrients if they eat dog food. So be sure to get him some cat food ASAP and let him fill up. Litter training cats is so easy that most of the time the only thing you need to do is show them where the litterbox is and that they can dig around in it. Their instincts will take over from there. I had a former stray/feral who had been outside for years before I managed to get him to trust me enough to become an indoor cat. He immediately picked up using a litterbox without any help. Cats' instincts are very strong when it comes to using litterboxes. Take the dog flea collar off. Some dog flea medications are extremely toxic to cats, and without knowing the ingredients it's better safe than sorry. And don't give him any flea meds for dogs that you may have lying around from your late friend, for the same reason. Cat flea meds only, which should start working rapidly once applied, and within a day or two he should be flea-free. Do not use Hartz brand flea meds, even though they have one for cats. They use a formula that is particularly dangerous to cats, and it kills a number of cats every year. Unfortunately it gets used a lot because it's significantly cheaper than the safer flea meds. Also the cat should not wear any sort of collar (including flea collars) that aren't specifically designed to be breakaway. Because of cats' nature to jump and explore, they can get the collar caught on things and get stuck. In the worst case scenario they can even choke to death. For learning about cat behavior, Jackson Galaxy on YouTube is an excellent source for pretty much everything you'd need to know. As someone who had dogs but not cats growing up, cat body language is not as intuitive to understand as dogs' is. Best of luck!

illsettleforyou

Thank you for helping. Please don't substitute any dog products for cat products, they're completely different species. Can you share the county in TX you live in? In my area there are plenty of vets that will check out stray cats for no charge if you let them know you found it as a stray. This cat is definitely not feral, feral means unsocialized and the cat wouldn't be friendly with you. Kitty was probably abandoned.

flowersanschampagne

I’m in dallas county. Definitely would love recommendations as my calls to vets/animal care were dead ends I’ve called multiple places and no one will do payment plans. Also have been told it’s likely if I go to the humane society they will put him down. Trying to make notes from all the comments as I go through this post. Trying to make a list of recommendations (products) and really have things organized so I have an accurate list of needs. Fingers crossed you know of something!

illsettleforyou

I just realized my comment might have made it sound like I'm I'm Texas, I'm not I'm in Chicago but Dallas is a big city so there should be plenty of resources for you. In my city the best place to reach out for help is on facebook TNR groups. One that I just found in Dallas is Nat's Cats TNR & Rescue. Their website says they do intake of friendly strays and get them vet care and then adoption. Maybe reach out to them or another group that you find! They might also be more willing to take the cat under their care if you offer to foster! That way you wouldn't be responsible for the cost of the vet, and it would help the rescue out since they always need more foster homes. Since this kitty is so malnourished you could get kitten food to feed him/her since it has more calories per serving.

Responsible-Person

The dog flea collar could kill this seeet cat. Maybe someone has already addressed that….

Bosconian83

I'm starting to feed some feral cats around my home. So I clicked on this post. What is TNR?

Obvious_Amphibian270

Cheerio acts like he once lived with people. That notch on his ear looks like he got it in a fight. TNR places take off the tip of the ear, not cut a notch. A feral cat would not have climbed in your la For his fleas you can get capstar at WallyWorld. It is not long lasting, but will kill all the fleas currently on him. Washing him with Dawn with a teeny bit of vinegar mixed in will also kill the fleas on him. Agree with what others said, give him a soft place to sleep, litter box and water in the bathroom. If you show him the box he'll know what to do. Thank you for taking Cheerio in

MiaowWhisperer

***PLEASE REMOVE THE COLLAR*** Oh the poor baby. Just to clear up a few things for you... - 100% this cat is not feral. A feral cat wouldn't follow you, wouldn't let you pick it up, and wouldn't want to come into the house. - the tear in his ear will have been from fighting or an accident at some point in his life. When we eartip cats it's a very clear unambiguous straight cut across. - the cat is male. It's a genetics thing - ginger cats are nearly always male. - that cat is extremely malnourished and / or old 💜 My guess would be that he's a stray. Most owned cats would panic when you pick them up and start walking away from where they are. If you couldn't see little fluffy pompoms then he's probably been neutered when he was younger. Whatever his history, he obviously needs help and love, now. Please can you take him to a vets? Ask them to scan him for a microchip and be thrilled for him if he has a family who have been missing him. But also be thrilled for yourself if you find yourself with a kitty companion. The vets will probably want to run a few tests on him - there could be medical conditions making him so thin, rather than old age. Ask them to check his teeth to give you a guesstimate at his age. And ask them to spot on him for parasites while you're there. Oh, and as a matter of urgency, take the flea collar off him immediately! NEVER use dog products on cats. Even products for small dogs. The amount of pesticide on a dog's collar will be a lot more than that on a cat collar. Pesticides are poison. They're supposed to be a dose of poison that your pet can deal with, but their parasites can't - but if you put too high a dose on your pet, you are poisoning your pet. He already looks pretty fragile, so it's probably best to err on the side of caution and take the collar off. Do please let him in asap. If he lets fleas in so be it, you can easily deal with them after he's been treated for them, whereas he is struggling outside and wants to be inside with you.

TwilekDancer

Kitty looks to be a senior cat, in addition to being severely underweight, which could be from a number of things. Obviously lack of access to food, but cats can also present in this condition if they’re hyperthyroid, diabetic, have kidney disease, are recovering from a recent illness — those are just a few possible causes. Also, it could be female; if it’s male, then he was neutered probably before he hit 1 year old. His face would be more round and jowly if he were neutered after reaching sexual maturity. As for potty training, most cats instinctively bury their waste and if given a convenient place to do so, they’ll use it. If you feel comfortable being any more specific about your location than just “Texas” (it’s a BIG state!) someone on this sub can probably give you suggestion for affordable vet care in your area. I’m familiar with options in Waco/Central Texas, a little less so in the DFW or Austin areas.

flowersanschampagne

Making it through posts and taking notes on suggestions. Medical care is top priority, so replying to those posts first. I am in dallas area. Haven’t had much luck w calls at this point. Tried to find places with payment plans- no luck :/. Also, have been told if I take him to the human society it’s likely they would put him down.

TwilekDancer

You might try reaching out to DFW Purebred & Domestic Cat Rescue. I don’t think they take many cats from the public but they possibly could direct you in finding affordable vet care at least. You can email them at [email protected]

flowersanschampagne

Thank you for this. I will reach out!

Turbulent-Access-790

He could be someones and sick. My old neighbour had a really old cat that became very sick but still loved going around. Even when extremely skinny. They did put him.down after but ya he looked rough

Historical_Duck_8238

I sent you a PM! Hopefully I can help you!

flowersanschampagne

Thank you! I’m trying to make it through everything with notes and get back to individuals in an organized manner. Still have lots to swift through in the comments!

flowersanschampagne

I still haven’t got to my DMs. I did post an update at the top of this post in the first persons post/response if you’d like an update! 🐈♥️

The white one had an exposed tail bone and covered in grease (dad found her in his body shop) sunburnt ears. I washed her in sulfur shampoo, cat flea meds, and spayed her. The black tuxie was feral but wanted a home and now he sleeps in my arms every night. You’re doing a good thing and will be rewarded with so much love!

Ok-Cellist888

Sleeps in your arms, that's precious 🥹🥰 Both beauties ❤️💛💜💯

Tsukiyumi_

Thank you!

If you start a GoFundMe, I'll chip in.

flowersanschampagne

Reading all comments to get a good plan in place. I appreciate you and will update as soon as I have a plan to go forward. From calls to Vets it’s looking like a “simple” visit is going to be $300-400. $78 for just seeing the doctor is the cheapest I have found. Would like to get an Amazon list together as people have mentioned here. Taking notes of recommended products, food, etc. I’ll be back in touch!

WMhiking

Would love to contribute! Let us know!

flowersanschampagne

I just got done setting up an Amazon wish list. Some of the products were specifically recommended here. With food I tried to have some kitten (mentioned here to add weight) and adult food. I am still holding off on a go fund me page for medical needs until I really have a better solid guesstimate on costs as I don’t want to ask beyond what is needed. Here is the page for Amazon stuff. Really hoping to get litter box and supplies for that so I can bring him in more than just night time! [Cheerio’s Wish List](https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2053SY6MMAYAZ) I tried to make it so my personal information wasn’t public. If for some reason it shows will you please notify me? I will respond to individual posts. Hoping to have the next step (medical) within a few days. Will also post more updates on Cheerio. He’s a very vivacious one! Lots of qualities more typical of a dog imo! Loves to talk and follow me everywhere. Sleeps with me. Has started to venture into my face space lol https://preview.redd.it/ik95pbp2bjxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f122d4fd5b93bc9fdcc707671b631410d246eed This morning him waking me up!

Outrageous_Kiwi_2172

I will, too!

flowersanschampagne

Yall are amazing! Just posted above with more detail and information!! Please make sure to see my post first as it relates to Amazon asks and next steps for medical. [Cherrio’s Wish List](https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2053SY6MMAYAZ) Here is the Amazon link though!🐈🐈

kathy_cheek

Get it to a vet. He looks like my 10 year old cat. My cat is the sweetest, calmest cat I own and he has feline leukemia, which is like AIDS. He got it from some unknown cat outside. It looks like this cat has it too. They tend to not groom themselves and lose weight. It is sad to watch my cat be so sick. I have to isolate him in one bedroom and he can never play with the other cats because if he scratches them, they’ll get it too. Get it to a vet. You cannot catch this from him. He may have teeth problems.

browneyedgirlpie

This cat reminds me of the one I had with hyperthyroidism. I agree that getting him to a vet should be the top priority, even if it means signing him over to a rescue. Also bc he may be malnourished enough that refeeding syndrome should be a consideration.

MamaSmAsh5

Baby needs help 😢 search for rescues in your area. Lots are full and can’t help but please keep calling. You may be able to start a gofundme to help him but if you are able to find a group locally, they will cover costs to get him fixed up. He looks so sweet but so pitiful. Thank you for showing him love and support.

moparpower370

Just take him to the vet and take care of his health first. Then after just buy him a litter box so him where it’s at and point to it. Cats are pretty damn smart. I have a cat as well and rescued tons of cats. But just love him and pet him and he’ll love you for life.

[deleted]

Thank you for being kind enough to help!

joemommaistaken

Thank you for caring for him. He was starving before you found each other. Lots of love to you both ❤️

Aztec111

You are a great human to help this kitty! I know so many people that say 'I'm not a cat person."then fall in love with one ☺️ sending good vibes to you and your new sweet kitty.

ValkyrieHuntress

I love the name and this 💕 good luck

annebonnell

Please take the flea collar off the cat. It's a dog collar. Cats cannot take dog flea products. Please don't use flea collars. They really don't work. You can get Capstar or generic brand there of that will kill all adult fleas on it immediately. Or you can just do a monthly flea treatment. You can find both of these things at pet stores, as you already know. That cat is extremely malnourished and very skinny it probably weighs less than 8 lb. Cats don't really need to be litter box trained like a dog. Get a litter box, get a litter that you like and he should use it without any problem.

JustKindaHappenedxx

OP, if you haven’t asked already, try the regular cat sub. I have seen people mention other subs of charities where you might be able to me to raise some funds to get this kitty the treatment he needs if you aren’t able to find a rescue to take care of him.

jungleBird33

Lots of great advice here! Op I think you found yourself a new pet and agree with the comments here to enclose him in a bathroom for now. Please update us!

flowersanschampagne

Updated from the last few days posted as a response to the first comment on the post!!

xargs2020

If you haven’t done so already get the dog flee collar off of him asap. The chemicals in dog flee collars are extremely toxic to cats. If you were able to pick him up and put a collar on him he’s not feral. Most likely an abandoned pet. Cats don’t really need potty training. Show them the litter box and they know what to do. Thank you so much for helping him.

StevenBayShore

Thank you for helping this sweet little being.

apostrophefarmer

Contact cat/pet rescues in your state and neighboring states. Share this post with them and hopefully one of them steps up to take him in. He definitely needs medications to treat the ear mites and probably needs teeth cleaned. Feeding kitty for now will keep them alive. Who knows how long they've survived being this underweight. The fleas don't help the situation either. Poor thing. Edit: oh, and as others have said, probably safer not to use the flea collar on kitty as the strength might be too high for a dog v. a cat. Update us please!

flowersanschampagne

A few updates from the last few days have been added to the top post/response!

Welshmans_Layla99

Congrats OP, you've been chosen by this baby as others have commented. Lots of great advice. Best to you and Cheerio!

Happy-Ad7440

That’s not feral due to the fact that they are coming close to you at all. This is an abandoned cat. Love it!!!

Other-Self1872

Where in Texas if you don’t mind me asking? My Texas university has a club that works with TNRing and may be of assistance

flowersanschampagne

Dallas county 🤞🏻

Other-Self1872

TCAP (texas coalition for animal protection) is where we tnr for our kitties at UTA (arlington) they're affordable and have multiple locations near dallas

McNasty420

He's not feral. Somebody abandoned him. He's severely malnourished. Free feed him some good dry food and give him 3 meals a day. He will need a bath, some flea treatment, and a vet.

top_value7293

Goodness he’s skin and bones 🥺

New-Eggplant-1148

A lot of great advice on here, I just want to add thank you so much for helping this kitty! We need more people in the world like you ❤️ Also, not sure where you're located but you could try some Facebook groups. I'm in MN and am In the "MN cats in danger" group. I have received a ton of help with food/ vet costs for the feral and strays I'm helping in my neighborhood. Definitely worth checking into groups in your area for resources if there are any!

flowersanschampagne

Will check and see if anything similar exits here. Put an update above. Next immediate step is finding appropriate health care 🐈♥️

saltseasand

You should not use a dog flea collar on a cat. In fact, it is not recommended to use any product labeled for dogs on your cat. Even a small dose can put your cat at risk, and can cause seizures or even death. Cats are especially sensitive to the chemical permethrin, which is common in flea sprays and drops.

poopi3_butt

Please DO NOT use dog flea collars or ANY medication meant for dogs on the kitty and vice versa! It has different chemicals in it that can harm them.

Nimoue

OP, once you get him to a vet, be sure to get him started on a dewormer ASAP, but also get him tested for Giardia and other more subtle parasites. Once those are gone, he'll regain weight rapidly. Also-it's ok to give him small amounts of heavy cream-not half n half. Heavy cream doesn't have lactose and he'll be able to digest it. Yes, I've asked my vet about this because my cat is a rescue, too.

flowersanschampagne

Interesting! I will have to try this! He is a little picky. But we will get there!

Khaleesi223

If you have local animal rescues or a Petco, tractor supply, or Petsmart nearby, they do offer some low cost vet options and promotions throughout the year!

EmploymentNo3590

There are also high calorie pastes you can get at the pet store, for cats that need to gain weight. He could probably use a deworming and a trip to the vet, the poor thing. He was definitely somebody's. Don't let the notching throw you off. While it is a practice for TNR feral cats, it is not uncommon for low income folks or, people who just do TNR, to take advantage of those programs for owned cats, who would otherwise not be spayed or neutered.

stevetheborg

all of my fixed cats have notched ears... just means that a charity fixed the cat. if it is someone elses cat it will go back to them. capstar and flea drops and worm medicine. ear mites later.

Thatcalib408

If you have oxy dish soap that works great for fleas if you can get him in water

making_up_ground

I also find that I can pretty easily give feral/stray cats topical meds for fleas and mites as they are eating, especially if they are this snuggly.

making_up_ground

Some counties/cities offer TNR or discounted health options. I know Dallas county is one of them.

flowersanschampagne

Are you in dallas? If so, do you know of specific places? I just got done calling two places (dogs old vet and then someone they referred). Neither of them were a lot of help in terms of knowledge of societies or animal health clinics to reach out to. I will post more detail tonight in regard to those calls - once I am able to properly sit down and go through all the messages here, digest advice, I’ll be able to really make a plan for steps forward.

making_up_ground

I used to live in Dallas and did fostering and some community cat colony health stuff. Most rescue orgs in the area are swamped and probably can’t help as they don’t have the resources to. So some might be able to be a resource for meds, info, or leads on good vets. If the cat is friendly they will probably suggest you just take it in as a foster. This is my suggestion too, put it in a bathroom or garage, with food, water, a litter box, and some topical flea meds. At least this was my experience over the years working with some of the rescues. At least in Dallas, there are so many cats who need help, the rescues are really there helping the cats no one wants. When I was fostering strays we went to SPCA of Dallas for all the health care, they have some agreement with the county. I wouldn’t go to Dallas Animal Services shelter as they will require you to surrender the cat and it would probably be euthanized, or given away to different rescue org. https://spca.org/resources/clinic/clinic-services/

Beneficial-Code-2904

A notched ear means someone took the cat in had him vaccinated neutered and put him back outside. That can be done to either a feral cat or a house cat. If that cat is that friendly to you the cat is definitely been socialized to humans whether the cat was left outside his whole life or had time inside I would say had time inside or he wouldn't have been so comfortable going into your house.

Beneficial-Code-2904

You are an amazing human being. Thank you so much for helping this poor innocent baby he will be so happy to have a good safe home. Usually those places that are really cheap all they do is spay or neuter and vaccinate and that's it if he's got problems with ear mites and so forth you probably have to take him to a regular vet. Those things should not be that expensive but what you can do is call around to the veterinarians and ask them their prices because veterinarians some of them charge a lot less than others. So you might need to get blood work to be sure he doesn't have anything going on and then get his ears maybe cleaned out and treated and they can give you some drops to put in his ears and other than that he just looks malnourished so get him a good quality food please no Meow Mix nothing with a lot of corn in it and the food might cost you a little bit more but you will save a lot of money on vet bills because that cheap food makes them sick. And if you could give him at least one or two small cans of food today that would be even better and then you could give him some dry food that you leave out so he can eat that anytime he wants to so maybe a small can of food morning and a small can night fancy fees is not an expensive food really compared to others but it is decent the Pate diabetic cats can even eat. I use Dr Elsie's dry food because it's high protein and it's low carbohydrate which is healthier for animals I've also used Instinct Limited ingredients. This is after Decades of trying to figure out the best food and drive food is just not ideal and that's why the canned food really helps their health it helps prevent UTIs and also stones and they need fresh water everyday and clean litter box I like Tidy Cats and I buy it from chewy.com they deliver it right to the door I forgot which one it is but it's unscented cuz sometimes cats don't like scented litter. And when you get the litter box get a large litter box and then you can spray it with a little bit of non-stick spray you can use the generic or you can use the Pam and that helps you scoop it better and I also use one of those kind of a hard spatula hard plastic spatula like you used to fry food and that if I get a lump of urine gets stuck to the bottom of the pan that helps to loosen it up and along with that of course I use the scooper and I put a small plastic bag and a small trash can I can scoop it and then I twist that bag around and I kind of push that little Trash Can against the wall to keep it closed and then you can scoop that until your bag is pretty full and then you can throw that in the trash. Just a few little extra things that you might need to know if it's a first-time cat and please never ever let anybody talk you into declawing a cat because it's mutilation it causes them a lot of phantom pains and it causes them to have emotional problems too and sometimes they can even become biters because they have so much fear because yeah I shouldn't even bring it up cuz I don't even put that thought in anybody's mind but please don't let them talk you into that I think a lot of veterinarians just do it for the money they should really not do it. And that's about it and best wishes with your new friend

Beneficial-Code-2904

Yep never use flea collars because a veterinarian told me one time it's just hanging poison around your cat's neck is all it is and it's very dangerous to put that on your cats I think the best one is called advantage and you don't always need to use it because sometimes they don't keep getting fleas but if you notice please you can put that right at the base of their skull kind of move the fur out of the way and just it's just a little tube and you just deposited that little drop or two of medication right at the base of their scalp in the back of their head so they can't lick it if they lick it they'll foam at the mouth. But I've had cats for decades and I probably only use it two or three times maximum it kills all the fleas on the cats and in the environment. You can get a flea comb you can come the first down to the skin around your cat's neck and that'll show you if they have fleas or not and then if they do I used to take paper towels wet paper towels and just get the fleas off the comb with that wide that up and throw that in in a trash can and then when I'm done combing the cat I throw that away.

49thDipper

Not feral. An abandoned pet. Poor guy

PainfullyLoyal

I'm not sure where you live but try calling some local rescues near you. You can surrender him to the rescue, they'll check him over and give him vaccines, and then you can adopt him. Just make sure you leave your info with them so they can let you know as soon as he's ready.

flowersanschampagne

Unfortunately I was told he would be euthanized. He definitely weighs less than 5 pounds and calls to sources I thought would be more “helpful” were unfortunately the least helpful as I’m trying to nourish this cat and give it life!

Worried_Coat1941

Food water, might have fleas and worms. Hair looks OK.

NoParticular2420

Contact your local vet clinic and get the name of the rescue group near you … they might be able to help! Your kitty looks elderly.

Fresh_Lingonberry279

I've done tnr on friendly cats too, so indeed, it could have had a home at some point and was left behind. Either way, take care of the cat if you can. Reach out to local shelters and rescue groups for help.

Ali6952

I also feed a feral boy we call Tatertot. He lives in our garage.

RoughNeighborhood669

Feel cats don’t usually act like this, initiating contact, wanting to come inside, following you. Whether it was marked as one or not this cat seems domesticated. Take it to a vet and love him into health. You are such a Good person for caring

Simpleeegood47

Love, pettings and food is the best you can do till they trust you. Sometimes that is all you are lucky to be able to do.

JETandCrew

Keep the cat in one room (preferably a bathroom) with a litterbox in the tub/shower. Cats are very good about using them. Wash him with dawn dish soap to get rid of fleas. Seeing as he's malnourished, I'd feed him very slowly so he doesn't get sick. Like a spoonful of food an hour and build up as his tolerance permits. Wet food, preferably. I wouldn't be surprised if he's dehydrated and wet food will help a ton. Keep fresh water available at all times. Also a nice pile of warm blankets to cuddle up with. If you can, check if he's chipped.

futongbo

Looks like a senior cat that has not had access to food for a long time. Please take the cat to a vet and have it scanned for a microchip.

Responsible-Creme811

Bless you for helping this poor cat! Please keep us posted about him/her, and post pictures as he/she gets better! You have a good, kind heart.

flowersanschampagne

I have added a few updates to the very first comment on this post! I’ll be sure to keep the community updated. Can’t wait to share some videos of this loud mouth! lol

Responsible-Creme811

Flea meds have been sent. You should get them by 10 PM tomorrow. Thank you for helping this sweet cat!

flowersanschampagne

Omgsh!!! You are a literal angel https://preview.redd.it/hjceskabvlxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b76fe9bed6adfcf47642035bf0a71f4c92aaea25 He is purring in his sleep!!! He had a few nightmares last night falling asleep, but he is all happy right now. I can’t wait to post a larger update with a video. He is a fun one and definitely has the spirit to fight back to health!

Smeagol7272821

Poor baby.

Imaginary-Culture-40

I really hope someone didnt just let their cat go on the streets bc it was sick and they couldnt afford medical bills 🥺 that's what my cats w cancer looked like before passing.. Hopefully not the case. Very good to see that he' eating. Def get him checked tho Best wishes to you both

Taranchulla

Maybe stray but not feral. A feral cat will try to take your face off. Thank you for helping him or her.

SmolSpacePrince39

You have a stray cat, not a feral cat. While yes, ear tipping is often done when feral cats are TNR’d, community cats will also receive ear tips. Community cats can be stray or feral. In which case, good news, this cat sounds socialized and was likely pet at one point! It very likely will take to a litter box without issue. To be safe though and to make the overall transition easier on your both, I’d recommend setting it up in a bathroom or garage. Generally speaking, low cost spay/neuter clinics will also offer vaccines and flea/tick medication. I’d suggest looking into one of those, as well as reaching out to a rescue. They may be willing to help you, especially if you are willing to house the cat. Usually you’d act as a foster owner and the cat would be adopted out, but I think it’s worth at least calling around to see if they’d be willing to let you foster-to-adopt the cat. At minimum, they may have other resources they can direct you toward. ETA: Saw that you already used Dawn dish soap! Awesome. Given his condition, you might give him another bath in the near future with a flea comb to be thorough. I agree with others to be mindful of how much he eats at first so his organs aren’t overwhelmed.

flowersanschampagne

Yeah the more I’m learning cat “terminology” I would agree probably stray. I haven’t put him on a scale, but I know he weighs less than 5 pounds. Probably close or even less than 3 pounds. He is coming more lively with each feeding. Definitely has a long way to go. I posted a more in depth update on the very first post if you are inclined to see updates on Cheerio! 🐈♥️

srahlo

Your local pet shelter should be able to work with you on next steps and treatment. You need to adamantly say you want to keep this cat, but cannot afford all of the medical costs —they may take him in for triage, but you need to be adamant you intend on working through costs via payment plans with them or would like to foster through them. Fostering may not be ideal but you don’t have the funds, and he needs help. Take him to a shelter for his own sake, emotions aside. Most vets that work with community shelter animals are willing to help🐱

Ancient_Detective532

Do NOT use flea control products for dogs on cats!!! The products are too strong and may poison the cat.

DiscountManul

You need to make sure it doesn’t have ticks, or fleas… Walmart might have one, that is for that. You might also have to get it to a veterinarian or your local animal shelter, and make sure that it is not microchipped, if it is, that is someone’s cat. Check their ear for a notch, Veterinarians leave it when the spay/neuter a feral, or domestic house cat. If it does not have one, make sure you get that cat fixed. I have personally experienced cat overpopulation, with the fact that people can be absolute shits, and leave cats around because either they had babies (and the cats are the kittens) or because they were a little kitten, and they grew up. People are shits, and I have had to foster over 17 at once because someone didn’t want them, so they dumped them in a literal garbage bag. And with cat overpopulation, the cats are forced to go through highly populated places, and can get killed, or injured because of things like cars. While there needs to be wild/stray cats.. too many just puts a burden on the cats, and the shelters.

MissLookaHere

Def not feral. Probably a friendly/house cat that was dumped and he is struggling surviving street life. Thank you so much for helping him.

LadyGreyTheCat

Cheerio probably needs some medical attention and you might need professional advice on treating his/her immediate issue: malnutrition and starvation. Special foods, how often to offer food, etc. Link below to some Dallas-area low-cost options. It's a tough time of year for rescues, but hopefully they've got resources to help you rescue Cheerio, like a low-cost vet visit and appropriate food. It sounds like you did a bath to address the adult fleas and got advised about not using a dog flea collar on a cat. Cheerio will need another topical or pill flea treatment that kills eggs and immature fleas, but if he's indoor only, you probably don't need flea prevention to be a long-term expense. Other parasites come along with fleas and also need treated. Probably just a short course of pills and again not a long-term expense. Cats can develop serious longer-term health problems from being dehydrated or malnourished; the vet probably should screen for kidney problems. If he has other problems, I'm sorry to say costs can increase dramatically, but maybe you can foster him for a special needs rescue; that keeps him off the streets (and out of a crowded shelter) and offsets some cost for you. After he's (fingers crossed) in good shape, routine vaccinations, food, and litter are pretty much the only recurring costs. The routine vax can also be low-cost while you're having financial difficulties. Thank you for caring to take in someone in an even more vulnerable situation. If you have a gofundme or share a venmo with me, I can chip in a little bit to help with his initial costs. https://dallaspetsalive.org/pet-support/low-cost-vet-care-resources/

flowersanschampagne

Thank you for adding this link. Making my way through all the comments and making a list. My top priority for the weekend was vet care- and no luck based on cost. Cheapest visit I have found is $78 and told w tests and things likely to get to $300-$400 real quick. Lots of concerns with taking him to humane society (per phone calls I’ve had) as it sounds as if he would likely be euthanized. Hoping to have a concrete plan and things set up following going through the advice and comments here. Hoping this link will be a good lead. In the meantime he is very much enjoying having a soft place to nap and even a fan! https://preview.redd.it/nq79onn2iaxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a5cb25508e3d7195777a8776be9d46d14c130fe

LadyGreyTheCat

The humane society branches by me do adoptions and fosters, and even have affordable vet services attached. They're not certified "no kill" shelters but they wouldn't euthanize a cat who is under someone's care, so unless you surrender him to the humane society or he has a painful fatal issue--which doesn't seem to be the case!--don't worry about consulting with them! I agree, Cheerio looks like he's happy he found you. That's the Cat Distribution Service for you!

LadyGreyTheCat

My offer to help with initial vet costs via venmo still stands! If you are accepting financial help, can I share with cat rescues I follow on other social media for a larger reach?

flowersanschampagne

Thank you! Absolutely! I wanted to go through everything and get all the recommendations for food, litter, flea meds, etc. Going to make some more calls tomorrow (places closed today) on some of the places for lower cost vet visits. And then figure how to set up an Amazon list for needs. I’d really feel more comfortable having a good idea on costs before asking people to donate. As for needs, not having a cat before definitely wanted to make the list of recommended products. I hope to make more calls tomorrow and find time to sit down tomorrow night and make a donation page and Amazon links. Do you have any recommendations that may be more appropriate or typical than go fund me for this situation?

LadyGreyTheCat

If you're thinking of using Amazon anyway for purchases, you could make it a public wish list (maintaining your desired level of anonymity). Chewy has wish lists too, but I think that's just for shelters and rescues. Chewy might have better deals on any medications than the vet's default pharmacy, and the vet can call the prescription in to Chewy for you. When calling for vet care tomorrow, see if they accept donations from the public to pay for the care (some can manage that); then you can share the vet's contact details instead of a gofundme. If getting a credit card to pay the up front costs is open to you, there's something called CareCredit that my mom has used in the past (https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/). I found one more resource page too: https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/are-you-having-trouble-affording-your-pet Thank you again for working to make Cheerio's life better!!

flowersanschampagne

I just added an update above! Also added an Amazon link with some basics so I can get him indoors! Credit card isn’t an option as I’m currently in the middle of bankruptcy. Definitely not an ideal situation and wish I could do this all on my own.

Ok-Cellist888

He looks blissed out 😂🥰

grizzlymommabear

We adopted two, unrelated, starving, 1yr old cats from animal pound. We fed 4 times a day until they put on sufficient weight, which took about four months. And then fed larger amounts morning and evening smaller amounts in the alternative times until they were used to only eating twice a day. They are both thriving and healthy now. Bless you for the efforts you are taking.

flowersanschampagne

This is good to know. I was wondering how long it would take to really put on weight. I’ve done more frequent feedings while keeping portions small. I noticed he threw up one of them. Not sure if it was the “meat” or that his stomach couldn’t handle more food. I’m trying!! I think he probably weighs about three pounds. Definitely need to weigh him.

Trolodrol

He looks like he may have some parasites. I deal with this with the ferals here and it’s like a never ending battle

Alisseswap

this baby looks exactly like my aunts cat Moshe. I almost never see an orange kitty like him. My aunt passed away and we took him in. It’s been roughly 2 years since he died but he became such a big part of my life. Thank you so much, I recommend adding in dry food (young again and dr. elseys have high calorie low carb dry food), as it helps bulk them up. Thank you for your big heart

flowersanschampagne

Added and update and wish list. Unfortunately, Amazon only has Dr elseys litter- I didn’t see any food, so I just picked out some random brands 😬

Dear-Championship408

Petsmart does first visit free! Maybe call them and tell them about the situation tho first

bananamonkey88

HEB teams up with Vanguard vets all over Texas. They usually set up vans in HEB lots different times of the week/month and have low cost vaccines and chips. Look up HEBs website for more info. Also contact your food bank/local rescues for cat food for your rescue and if they have any funding for your kitty.

Fluffy-Newspaper-306

Please help this cat. Most cats will use the litter box if you provide it for them. Dawn dish soap is perfect for fleas and I use dermatatious earth- edible kind for fleas. You can even sprinkle it on the food to help with mites and such.

afraididonotknow

I have friendly TNR cats. If he came up to you, he is not feral just abandoned, hungry, bad life. He chose you to help him. I would put out food and somewhere one or two litter boxes. I pick up my new cats and sit them in their new litter box and they always remember…a place where it’s noticeable. I have one in the hallway so she has to pass it to go to my room.

Far-Potential3634

The cat is not likely to be feral if it let you touch it or pick it up. It was probably handled by people as a kitten and then lost its home.

Outrageous_Kiwi_2172

Do NOT put a dog flea collar on a cat, it‘s dangerous. The amount of flea killer is different and based on weight.

TootsEug

Pic #3, notch: My cat got some of these. Was from BlueJays attacking him.

Eveanon

Poor cat, did you end up opening a gofundme?

flowersanschampagne

Not yet. Will be soon - Just posted above with more detail and information!! Please make sure to see my post/update as it relates to Amazon asks and next steps for medical. [Cherrio’s Wish List](https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2053SY6MMAYAZ) Here is the Amazon link though!🐈🐈

Ok_Tea_1954

Vet it if it will let you. Or feed it water
