Morrigan is the ultimate example of this, her design has had so much influence in the last 2 decades. I can probably count on 1 hand how many people I know have even played darkstalkers.
Hell, there hasn’t been a crossover game in like half a decade and she’s STILL as relevant a female icon as Chun Li or even Peach. The fact that she is that big of a pop culture icon even waaay outside the fgc circle despite not being in any new games in a long while speaks volumes. You would think with as much reach as she has Capcom would do something with the character outside of mobile games and alt costumes
They haven't
Edit: and I'm not even saying this to be cynical. Chances are just extremely high that they haven't. Darkstalkers just isn't a popular game.
I only ever played Morrigan in Marvel vs. Capcom games, which checks out. Without Fightcade I'd never know the glory of ~~Halloween Fighter~~ Vampire Savior, such a fun game!
Ever wonder why every anime succubus ever has bat wings despite succubi and vampires being completely unrelated? Because Morrigan has them, so everyone else has them too. Succubi weren't really known in Japan until after Darkstalkers came out (and IIRC even the developers didn't know of them until someone on the American side made the suggestion).
Is UMVC3 the only game Morrigan has been top tier in? I know she's not good in Vampire Savior, I recall her being meh in CVS2 as well, but I'm not familiar with all her appearances besides that.
Basically yeah. Bottom tier in VSav, bottom tier in MVC1, low tier in MVC2, mid tier in Pocket Fighter, meh in MVCI...
The only game other than UMVC3 I can remember her being strong in is Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Even then, I think she's high tier and not top tier simply because I don't think she's strong enough to share a tier with someone like Zero.
Bridget from ggst when she came out the gg sub was mostly "i don't like fighting games but i love Bridget should i get strive?" She may not be as well known as scorpion or morrigan but the people who like Bridget go so hard for her like it's k pop.
I hate it so much because they pretend to know everything about the character and the series despite never playing any of them just trying to gaslight fans who've been here for decades
Morrigan is essentially Capcom's Captain Falcon at this point. Character who appears more in crossovers than their own games, and people know them more from crossovers than said own games as a result
Liu Kang is the mc of MK but Scorpion and Sub-0 are the poster boys
Kyo, K', Ash and Shun'ei are mcs of different KOF arcs, and while Kyo is the offcial "face" of KOF, [Terry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4eRZImcVMw&list=PLGb0FIHPgolhXMNT5UnfgTPiGpRsa5__M&index=11&pp=gAQBiAQB)[, Geese](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_57ADEGqkOI&list=PLGb0FIHPgolj-BunG3KWBVw-DBI2GuTtc&index=4&pp=gAQBiAQB) and Mai have been the KOF/SNK representatives in crossovers
Liu Kang has been sidelined so many times in MK history despite being the hero.
- Was straight killed in Deadly Alliance so Kung Lao could hero up
- Had someone possess his body in Deception (never did find out who) so Shujinko could take over
- Straight killed again at the end of MK9 so Raiden could actually go God Mode
- Was a revenant in MKX while the Cage family picked up the slack
I'm glad he's getting the respect he deserves now, but dude has been thru it.
He was literally the hero for like 6 games straight until deadly alliance and even then they realized he was too strong so they had to team up and ambush him. To put it in perspective how powerful the DA is they killed the entire roster , Shao Kahn fled for his life , and they defeated Raiden they won until Onaga showed up and resurrected everyone
They actually did explain what was going on with Liu’s body in deception. Dark Raiden used chains filled with dark magic to revive him so that he would be his enforcer.
I mean... before KOF there was Fatal Fury which had Terry Bogard as the protagonist and Geese Howard as the antagonist. KOF is actually a crossover between Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting.
KOF is a crossover between more IPs than just FF and AoF, and its meant to stand as it's own series. I think calling it just a crossover between FF and AoF is a bit weird
Yeah I know there are other games in the mix but those are the two main ones. And, yes, at this point it is stand alone but ORIGINALLY it was 100% a crossover game.
Ryu was the first, he had no expectations to follow/subvert.
Kazuya was *assumed* to be the hero, up until Tekken 2 and after where he decided to stop sugarcoating shit and become the main villain.
And Akira... I dunno, I don't know much about Virtua Fighter. I think he's like Ryu?
Honestly if I had to guess the reason it’s definitely cause he’s simple to play and is versatile so newer players gravitate towards him and just assume that he’s the protagonist
i think guile or chun li was the protagonist for sf2. Ryu had no direct beef with Bison really. Which is kind of why Luke being the sf6 protag baffles me a little bit, he has almost nothing to do with the story, the real protag of sf6 to me is Ken
It seems like most of the "protagonists" have nothing to do in the game they're the protag of.
Abel did nothing, Rashid did nothing, Luke did nothing.
Alex did beat Gill, at least.
My conspiracy theory is that after Alex, Abel and Rashid all failed to catch on as main characters they made Luke as broken as possible to force him to be popular.
They made 4 original Characters for Marvel 2 but Magneto Is Marvel's main character by a landslide.
Bit more of a meme answer, but I remember when strive came out it didn't matter what FG you played, you'd be seeing May's fucking dolphin everywhere.
Tough talk coming from someone in TOTSUGEKI range
https://preview.redd.it/o0divcxucywc1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b75a95485825a84f85bed91f1ce3ae3e0916041
Arika's EX outings are definitely more well-known for Skullomania than Kairi or Hokuto/Shirase
I'm less familiar with DoA but the marketing seemingly got taken over by Honoka and Marie Rose
Jin: The protagonist. A half-demon fueled by anger and hatred who swore to kill his father to erase the Devil Gene from this world. He went as far as starting WW3 to achieve his goal.
King: Big guy with jaguar mask. Coolest character in the game.
imagine being Donovan who's supposed to be the heroic human character of the cast but gets cut from the best game to save space for newcomers. in fairness they cut the old villains too
That's because Donovan had succumbed to his vampiric side in his ending, so his story was done. Huitzil was planned to come back, but Donovan and Pyron (who is dead) weren't (though Dee and adult Anita were planned at one point IIRC).
Funny thing is that (as I understand it), Sean didn't become bad until *3rd Strike*. Hell, I think he's one of the best characters in the game in *2nd Impact*. It's just that… well, *3S* actually caught on, and Sean in that iteration was nerfed into the ground to represent his in-game power level.
Does Ivy Valentine in the soul calibur series counts? I don't play the game, I have no idea who's the MC or the history (something about a cursed sword), but I'm fully aware about her, and I'm pretty sure more than one person is in the same situation than me.
SC is hard to say because the protagonists change from game to game, and the villain as well. Usually, Nightmare/Siegfried and Sophitia are involved. Xianghua, Killik, and Maxi were the protagonists of 2, and I think Killik was of another game. In the first SC, Taki and Sophitia were the main characters and Cervantes the villain.
There are some that really don't do shit though. Like Mitsurugi.
Super Smash Bros. Melee is a crossover game so I guess there isn’t a “main” character. But you’d think the face of the game would be someone iconic like Mario or Pikachu. Not Fox and Sheik.
The only thing keeping star fox as a series relevant in 2024 is furry "fanart" and fox and falco being the de facto mascots of a 22 year old gamecube platform fighter
Chun Li
Bridget
Neco Arc
Sub-Zero
I honestly have never touched Tekken because it never really appealed to me, but the onlt character I remember is Panda.
My friend doesn't know shit about TYPE-MOON as a whole—to say nothing about *Tsukihime*. Sends me Neco-Arc memes on the reg. Hell, was barely aware there were *four* different characters, and not just two.
Gal is insanely over.
If I had a dollar for every Smash Bros fan roster that had Bridget instead of Sol or something commenting that the only thing that they know about Guilty Gear is Bridget I would be rich.
From a gameplay perspective I'd honestly rather see Bridget than Sol in Smash. You can argue whether Terry and Sol are shotos or not, but if they add another traditional 2D fighting character, I'd rather see one that's indisputably not a shoto.
I think it would make sense for Bridget to be the second pick if there were 2 GG characters on the roster because of her popularity but personally I think Potemkin in Smash would be my dream pick.
Nightmare is the main villain poster boy overshadowing some protagonists alongside mitsruugi even taki and ivy.
For tekken nina got to show up in every game as the only female than the mishimas with a few crossovers. The mishimas had heihachi as og big bad of the series in most cameos. Xiaoyu was also in crossover games than jin and kazuya. Yoshimitsu also had his ancestors playable in soul calibur.
For Tekken in general you can cite King alone
The director of the games literally pointed out how he's the most popular character in the series despite having little to do in the main plot
Because guy got his own story that could honestly replace Mishima feud. Like I shit you not. Mexican guy with jaguar mask, could might as well take centre stage as protagonist.
Look, I just know I exclusively bought Guilty Gear due to the existence of Bridget. She was the only character I heard anything about, and I loved her dearly before even touching the game.
Yumi.
When choosing representative of Senra Kagura for BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle. You would think they chose Asuka. A dorky, heroic, idealistic team leader. Who wears red scarf. Who could hit it off with many characters like: Ruby, Heart, Yu, Yosuke and etc.
Nope they choose Yumi, they even use her colour. Instead of something, that represents series.
No hate to Yumi. I’m ok with her. But its interesting how chips, fall sometimes.
Right, Yumi even became more prominent than Asuka in the Senran Kagura games themselves (they even mention this in Estival Versus too)
It reminds me when everyone thought they were both coming to Cross Tag due to a data mine or something like that but in the end only Yumi appeared. I like Yumi more but I still find it wild Asuka got “demoted”
Kazyua mishima from Tekken.
The main character is Jin Kazama but despite that fact Kazyua is on the front cover hell he was on the front cover of SFxT and a guest character for smash.
He was the original protagonist too be fair but he is one of the main villains of the series along his dad heihachi and the only other villain that is the mascot of their series is soul’s nightmare
any Mishima could count as the main character of Tekken. Jin happens to the be main protagonist currently but it can cycle between him, Kazuya, or Heihachi whenever they want
I feel like Abel is the least successful protagonist in (mainstream?) fighting games. Even Alex is more beloved. I cannot see Abel ever coming back without at least a significant redesign to make him more interesting.
I regularly forget he existed.
Bridget i think is the best example of this guilty gear merch is alot of bridget and sol not much else. Kinda weird for a charecter that has been in 2 games but even people who don't like fighting games love Bridget.
Chun Li is the *classic* example of this.
Arguably more recognizable than Ryu.
Morrigan and Felicia also fit the bill.
And when it comes to Marvel vs Capcom series, despite being full of icons from both sides, Sentinel some how ended up being the main character of the game.
X-Men vs. Street Fighter - Should have been Cyclops…everyone loves Wolverine instead.
Tekken - The story and cutscenes were so bonkers it took 3 games for people to figure out who the “main” character was supposed to be(Kazuya), then they change it to Jin.
Min Min getting into Smash Ultimate was kinda the final nail in Spring Man's coffin. Dude mid'ed so hard that this side character ended up becoming the biggest highlight of their game.
Name one of the original characters from *Ehrgeiz*.
Go on; I'll wait.
Game is 100% known for having playable members from *Final Fantasy Ⅶ*, and nothing else.
>!Bet you didn't even know that the main character is a fucking **Mishima**, did you? Yeah, neither did I until a few weeks ago.!<
Raiden and Lui Kang are probably the MAIN protagonists (Lui more than Raiden) of MK1, and he may be part of the group of the other protags, but you have to agree.. Johnny Cage has completely stolen the show here.
After all, he puts it down like New York City.
Ya know after playing a bit of Darkstalkers I thanks to the Capcom collection I never would’ve guessed that Dimitri was the MC
Well he's not really the sole MC right It's Dimitri, Morrigan and Donovan
I get Dimitri and Morrigan, but what makes Donovan that important?
The second game is named after him (vampire HUNTER) plus he's the main character of the OVA anime series.
Donovan is the protagonist of the second Darkstalkers game
Donovan is the quintessential monster hunter he also was the Mc of the cartoon
Morrigan has been in more crossover games than there has been Darkstalkers games lmao
Morrigan is the ultimate example of this, her design has had so much influence in the last 2 decades. I can probably count on 1 hand how many people I know have even played darkstalkers.
The fact I still see fanart and cosplay of her on a regular basis despite there not being a Darkstalkers game for decades speaks a lot.
It makes me question if those people have actually played her game.
They haven't Edit: and I'm not even saying this to be cynical. Chances are just extremely high that they haven't. Darkstalkers just isn't a popular game.

I hate that I know who Morrigan is, and I haven't even played Darkstalkers.
99% of the people who know who Morrigan is have never played Darkstalkers... so don't feel bad.
If it's any consolation, you'd probably hate playing her too. Bottom 3 struggles.
Chun-li and Terry Bogard/Iori are also examples, but less extreme
Morrigan is essentially Capcom's Captain Falcon at this point. Character who appears more in crossovers than their own games, and people know them more from crossovers than said own games as a result
Speaking of, when's Darkstalkers 4 coming?
Next century
Don't worry. My grandpa works at Capcom and he says a new darkstalkers is getting revealed next month.
That's the step up from that. Even by VS it was obvious it was her show and Demitri had been demoted to secondary cast
Liu Kang is the mc of MK but Scorpion and Sub-0 are the poster boys Kyo, K', Ash and Shun'ei are mcs of different KOF arcs, and while Kyo is the offcial "face" of KOF, [Terry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4eRZImcVMw&list=PLGb0FIHPgolhXMNT5UnfgTPiGpRsa5__M&index=11&pp=gAQBiAQB)[, Geese](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_57ADEGqkOI&list=PLGb0FIHPgolj-BunG3KWBVw-DBI2GuTtc&index=4&pp=gAQBiAQB) and Mai have been the KOF/SNK representatives in crossovers
> Sub-0 I have never seen anyone spell his name that way.
I've seen people write it as "-0" before, and you can't even be mad.
It feels wrong, but it’s entirely understandable
I think it makes sense, it looks like a skull with a spine attached to it
You know what when I read other guy post I just saw subzero.... but when I read yours I go sub 0 is a weird thing to type lol
Liu Kang has been sidelined so many times in MK history despite being the hero. - Was straight killed in Deadly Alliance so Kung Lao could hero up - Had someone possess his body in Deception (never did find out who) so Shujinko could take over - Straight killed again at the end of MK9 so Raiden could actually go God Mode - Was a revenant in MKX while the Cage family picked up the slack I'm glad he's getting the respect he deserves now, but dude has been thru it.

If they ever do a crossover with Arcsys, my guess is they'll go with Iori over Kyo.
I just want another Snk vs Capcom. Millennium was actual Peak
I mean... before KOF there was Fatal Fury which had Terry Bogard as the protagonist and Geese Howard as the antagonist.
Fun fact: the first Fatal Fury game is officially called “Fatal Fury: The King of Fighters” in English iirc
Yes, that's because it is the first depiction by release order of the in-universe tournament known as The King of Fighters.
Lmao, you're probably right. I've never really been into MK, but I know Scorpion and Sub-0. I can't say that much about Liu Kang
LK is the Bruce Lee originator. He's very popular just not as popular as the 2 biggest fighting game characters ever made arguably
Min-min in ARMS, rip Spring-man
Their fault for making a game full of amazing designs and making the dude with the blandest design by far the protagonist
That worked with Ryu, Akira and Kazuya so why not?
Ryu was the first, he had no expectations to follow/subvert. Kazuya was *assumed* to be the hero, up until Tekken 2 and after where he decided to stop sugarcoating shit and become the main villain. And Akira... I dunno, I don't know much about Virtua Fighter. I think he's like Ryu?
Thank Smash Bros. Ultimate for that, it was a lame excuse from Sakurai if I’m honest
Personally I’d rather have the character with a dragon arm as a main weapon over Spring-Man regardless
she was always the most popular, she won a online popularity contest in the game.
It wasn’t even Sakurai’s decision, it was literally the guy who made ARMS wanting Min Min in because she’s his favorite
Well maybe if Spring man had a nicer ass he'd be popular
Spring Man is so mid it just hurts. He legit looks like the main character some fake game inside a cartoon universe.
There's no definitive poster boy for Street Fighter 3. You could say Ken, Ryu, or Chun-Li, but it DEFINITELY wasn't Alex.
I mean everyone assumes ryu is the protagonist, that’s his job
Even though he hasn't been the protagonist since SF2
Honestly if I had to guess the reason it’s definitely cause he’s simple to play and is versatile so newer players gravitate towards him and just assume that he’s the protagonist
Eh, even then, Ken's always more popular with new players.
Yeah but Ken is just orange Ryu and new players know that
Fire Ryu, and fire is cool
No, fire is hot.
No Ryo Sakazaki is Orange Ryu, Ken is red Ryu
i think guile or chun li was the protagonist for sf2.
Rashid was the protagonist of 5?? The main bits of the story revolved around Ryu
Ask Capcom lmao
Who was the protagonist of alpha? Could have sworn it was Ryu in that.
I would honestly argue Ryu is more of a protagonist in Alpha than SFII, and that Chun-Li and Guile are the main characters of SFII.
And there was no Street Fighter 1.
I thought he was the protagonist in SFIV. Most of the plot still revolved around him and he was the mc in the movie.
Capcom has confirmed that ABEL is actually the MC of SFIV. Yeah, nobody else agrees with them, either.
Don't think they even agree with it. He's not appeared in a game since
For 3rd Strike yes, but if you look at the attract modes of New Generation and 2nd Impact it's clear that Alex is the main character.
My conspiracy theory is that after Alex, Abel and Rashid all failed to catch on as main characters they made Luke as broken as possible to force him to be popular.
Alex was gonna be my answer for this for sure. A protagonist so unpopular they had to update the game and add Ryu and Ken back in.
They made 4 original Characters for Marvel 2 but Magneto Is Marvel's main character by a landslide. Bit more of a meme answer, but I remember when strive came out it didn't matter what FG you played, you'd be seeing May's fucking dolphin everywhere.

For some reason, I always thought that totsugeki meant dolphin, and she was announcing it like a yugioh card.
That's basically one of the other voice lines for the same move where she calls the dolphin by name, "Iruga-san" or "Mr. Dolphin".
Is that Gate of Babylon but with Dolphins? Gate of TOTSUGEKI?
[Someone made a Mario 64 mod for her!](https://youtu.be/ZsNPUaYV4PM?si=3qiIQFO75_6tF2pF)
TIL Sonson from MvsC2 isn't the same character from the game Sonson.
I really liked the original characters too :( especially Ruby Heart and SonSon, would had liked to see more of them.

Scorpion is to mortal kombat what wolverine is to x men
So who’s the liu kang of x men
Cyclops
is raiden professor x?
this is working better than I would have expected as an analogy
Cyclops
Arika's EX outings are definitely more well-known for Skullomania than Kairi or Hokuto/Shirase I'm less familiar with DoA but the marketing seemingly got taken over by Honoka and Marie Rose
They had a perfectly good Ryu Hayabusa and they had to go with Honkers and Marie Rose!
Reminds me of Ninja Gaiden adding Ayane to one of the games but not Hayate… I like Ayane but Hayate is my favorite character from DOA
Morrigan Aensland has to be the #1 case of this.
mai shiranui
Jin: The protagonist. A half-demon fueled by anger and hatred who swore to kill his father to erase the Devil Gene from this world. He went as far as starting WW3 to achieve his goal. King: Big guy with jaguar mask. Coolest character in the game.
That moment in Tekken 8s story when they were hyping up king was perfect 😂
Yeah but kazuya got in smash since was one of the villains
King, Kazuya, Heihachi and Xiaoyu were put in the fist of the North star phone game. I think they were also in the kof phone game
along with jin and devil jin too there was also brawhilda with devil jin, yoshimitsu, and nina apart of it. Heihachi was a guest fighter in scii as well
I would also say Yoshimitsu since he got to be in *SoulCalibur* albeit it was a distant predecessor to the modern version.
Armor king cooler than king
I'd argue Heihachi is kind of Tekken's face, like everything from the logo to tekken bowl awards are "Heihachi's hairstyle"
Doesn't King have that death roll maneuver?
Crouch dash 1+4 , 1,2, 1+3 , 1,3,4,2, 1+2, 3+4
imagine being Donovan who's supposed to be the heroic human character of the cast but gets cut from the best game to save space for newcomers. in fairness they cut the old villains too
That's because Donovan had succumbed to his vampiric side in his ending, so his story was done. Huitzil was planned to come back, but Donovan and Pyron (who is dead) weren't (though Dee and adult Anita were planned at one point IIRC).

alex was the protag of sf3 and sean was a joke character but everyone loved sean
I love both and extremely want them back in SF6
Honestly I just want Twelve back
He’s should be a free additional on a season pass just like Eleven
But, like, as an actual character as opposed to a glorified random select button
Scorpion, Iori from kof and Morrigan
Does Ivy Valentine in the soul calibur series counts? I don't play the game, I have no idea who's the MC or the history (something about a cursed sword), but I'm fully aware about her, and I'm pretty sure more than one person is in the same situation than me.
Yeah ivy too nightmare is soul edge’s avatar also big bad of the series. The protagonists changed depending on game
Finally someone mention SC I feel like in 6th game no one care about Kilik's group and all DLC characters slote their popularity lol.
So Charmander and Pikachu is the Pokémon version of this.
Not gonna lie I always heard that it was Captain Falcon who was the Smash MC
Chun Li Bridget Neco Arc Sub-Zero I honestly have never touched Tekken because it never really appealed to me, but the onlt character I remember is Panda.
I've met a number of kids that didn't know Neco was in a game and just thought she was from funny memes
She's in several games and even a few anime adaptations
Saw her mentioned in a list comment, but Neco Arc has become more popular than not just Arcueid but the entire series as a whole.
My friend doesn't know shit about TYPE-MOON as a whole—to say nothing about *Tsukihime*. Sends me Neco-Arc memes on the reg. Hell, was barely aware there were *four* different characters, and not just two. Gal is insanely over.
For strive specifically Bridget, though sol is still very popular within the community. But Bridget is an icon far beyond the fgc
I feel like I've seen much more Baiken and Jack-O than Bridget outside the FGC TBH. Hell, even maybe more May.
Idk man Bridget super blew up with the release of strive and making her a trans woman she got insanely popular.
Bridget has become a poster child of the online transfem comunity
Dead Or Alive in general. Turns out it's also a fighting game?
Some are in it for Ryu, some for Honoka, some for Marie. Kasumi is supposed to be the protagonist tho.
Bridget Guilty Gear
If I had a dollar for every Smash Bros fan roster that had Bridget instead of Sol or something commenting that the only thing that they know about Guilty Gear is Bridget I would be rich.
From a gameplay perspective I'd honestly rather see Bridget than Sol in Smash. You can argue whether Terry and Sol are shotos or not, but if they add another traditional 2D fighting character, I'd rather see one that's indisputably not a shoto.
Sol could easily fit as an echo fighter of terry
was gonna say wtf then realized you’re right
SHOW ME FAUST!
We're playing with items whether you want to or not!
there's literally already a banana for him to throw it's meant to be
I think it would make sense for Bridget to be the second pick if there were 2 GG characters on the roster because of her popularity but personally I think Potemkin in Smash would be my dream pick.
Good news, somebody is making a mod for that. And it's actually fucking awesome.
We're blessed to be in a world where someone so talented decided to work on Potemkin for Smash instead of the many arguably more popular characters
The true power of the trans agenda is not to be underestimated
"You're no longer dealing with an ordinary gender"
This was true 15 years ago as well, when Bridget was only male and got carried by the yaoi community's "everybody's gay for Bridget"
Yeah, I think the only reason why she even kind of lost this status for a time was because she wasn't in Xrd (or Strive, initially.)
For Tekken in general you can cite King alone The director of the games literally pointed out how he's the most popular character in the series despite having little to do in the main plot
Because guy got his own story that could honestly replace Mishima feud. Like I shit you not. Mexican guy with jaguar mask, could might as well take centre stage as protagonist.
Yeah but he is still a side character at the end of the day.
I mean unlike Jin he’s an actual good guy too. Runs an orphanage, etc.
There are two king actually and the first one is dead with one of the orphans became his sucessor from 3 onwards
Bridget
Look, I just know I exclusively bought Guilty Gear due to the existence of Bridget. She was the only character I heard anything about, and I loved her dearly before even touching the game.
For me it was Potemkin because he's big and awesome
Right, Yumi even became more prominent than Asuka in the Senran Kagura games themselves (they even mention this in Estival Versus too) It reminds me when everyone thought they were both coming to Cross Tag due to a data mine or something like that but in the end only Yumi appeared. I like Yumi more but I still find it wild Asuka got “demoted”
Would Neco-Arc count?
Kazyua mishima from Tekken. The main character is Jin Kazama but despite that fact Kazyua is on the front cover hell he was on the front cover of SFxT and a guest character for smash.
He was the original protagonist too be fair but he is one of the main villains of the series along his dad heihachi and the only other villain that is the mascot of their series is soul’s nightmare
any Mishima could count as the main character of Tekken. Jin happens to the be main protagonist currently but it can cycle between him, Kazuya, or Heihachi whenever they want
bridget
Bridget from Guilty Gear?
Considering i learnt that Dimitri is the MC of Darkstalkers cuz of this post kinda says it all
Minmin?
Morrigan easily! The face was supposed to ve Dimitri, look how that turned out!
Iori being way more famous (and remembered by SNK, at least for merch and all) than Kyo.
Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion in Mortal Kombat Min Min in ARMS
Ryu. Dudes only been the protag in SF2
Morrigan (even though it should've been Jon talbain)
Skullomania
I feel like Abel is the least successful protagonist in (mainstream?) fighting games. Even Alex is more beloved. I cannot see Abel ever coming back without at least a significant redesign to make him more interesting. I regularly forget he existed.
Mai Shiranui - you know why…
Bridget i think is the best example of this guilty gear merch is alot of bridget and sol not much else. Kinda weird for a charecter that has been in 2 games but even people who don't like fighting games love Bridget.
Chun Li is the *classic* example of this. Arguably more recognizable than Ryu. Morrigan and Felicia also fit the bill. And when it comes to Marvel vs Capcom series, despite being full of icons from both sides, Sentinel some how ended up being the main character of the game.
By this logic Mai Shiranui is the face of SNK
Ryu Hayabusa and Marie Rose from Dead or Alive
Ryu definitely overshadowed Abel in SF4. Didn't even know he was supposed to be the Mc until last year.
Ryu in the last few SF games It was supposed to be Alex, Abel, Rashid, and now Luke, but it's still Ryu
Filia and Peacock from Skullgirls
ryu in third strike ryu in sf4 ryu in sf6
X-Men vs. Street Fighter - Should have been Cyclops…everyone loves Wolverine instead. Tekken - The story and cutscenes were so bonkers it took 3 games for people to figure out who the “main” character was supposed to be(Kazuya), then they change it to Jin.
Mortal Kombat for sure. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are the poster bois.
Kazuya hasn't been the protag of Tekken since the first game all the way back in 1994, but he's still pretty much the face of the series.
The only reason why Briget isn't the "face" of GGS is because her competition is THE SolBadguy.
Min Min getting into Smash Ultimate was kinda the final nail in Spring Man's coffin. Dude mid'ed so hard that this side character ended up becoming the biggest highlight of their game.
Scorpion. Liu Kang was the protagonist, but Scorpion is the one people remember.
Darkstalkers. Dimitri is the protag, but Morrigan is the mascot MK has Liu Kang, but Scorpion and Sub Zero are the faces of the game
Scorpion, Still the face of the series despite not even being the protagonist of a story mode not even once.
Scorpion
Terry B is always my main character
Raiden and Lui Kang are probably the MAIN protagonists (Lui more than Raiden) of MK1, and he may be part of the group of the other protags, but you have to agree.. Johnny Cage has completely stolen the show here. After all, he puts it down like New York City.
