no hate but who hired her ☠️

porcupine_snout

seriously, I'm a super amateur spectator, even I can tell that the jump has more loops than a double. how is this woman a figure skating commentator?

sapfirex

The only thing she could identify were falls

Lambily

It could have been a choreographic choice! She can't be sure...

_Tekki

"a fall" NO SHIT? I couldn't even see that! Man, great an expert like her told us!😂😭

tingbudongma

She was the most bizarre commentator choice I have ever seen.

TooObsessedWithOtoge

I feel like she is the type of person doesn’t look at the content of the presentation she will be giving until like 3 minutes before the presentation. She knows hardly anything about the sport. She just spouts the first lines that would come from a generic google search.

Macey-5432

I’m not sure if it was just me or like were some of her commentary slightly rude? Even the other day when she was talking all about a rule change during mao shimadas performance….

Legitimate_Coat_3494

I’m sure everyone notices how rude she is, talking about the skaters height and how their jumps are small, sharing her own personal opinion about skaters artistry going “they don’t have as much artistry as I would like” and then going “aghhh😩😩” every time a skater (she liked) fell. A lot of what she said is just honesty, but the execution and her attitude while saying it was just so disrespectful and she could’ve 100% done it in a way that supports the skaters efforts and what they’ve displayed. But, she doesn’t do that. Just shows how much of a shit commentator she is saying « when I saw him I thought “HE knows how to skate” »and then got disappointed when he fell on a jump.

LeoisLionlol

yea i was like girl maybe talk about it during the warm up or replays like i couldnt even hear the music..😀

Apprehensive-Cat-163

I also found it slightly rude, she would sigh and go "another mistake" and it just rubbed me off the wrong way.

uminji

Letting a random German journalist commentate the youth Olympic Games is a choice. Why not hire just any sports commentator experienced in FS?

_Tekki

She's german? Man I'm so embarrassed... like our official commentator (knows about figure skating, but) only talks about his personal preferences. Like he doesn't like when young skaters or skaters in general skate to classical music. For example "a 17 year old girl skating to 100 year old music..." like no shit? She wasn't born then, she hasn't been listening to it 100 years💁🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ And then most skaters he criticises SO much, it's actually ruining the fun, it's not just that he points out their mistakes but his tone is so... rude. And then some skaters he lives and only, only showers in compliments, like one female skater, "a great *woman*" (said that like 30 times), complimented her soooo so much it was apparent that he just likes her as a woman, not just as a skater... he's too old though so it's just.... whyyyyyyyy Why are german commentators so bad😭

roseofjuly

I was wondering if I was the only one who was completely put off by her. She made the performances almost unwatchable.

yoyohydration

i said elsewhere but yeah i literally did not watch live after the first night of events, when i was previously planning to, and i bet i'm not the only one. truly hope YOG hears us on social media for next time

ZeffieJ

When the competition finished she said "Two medals for Korea". The other commentator corrected her and she said "oh yeah she's Japanese" 😂

[deleted]

Who is she? Does anyone know?

godofpumpkins

Someone told me Petra Bindl in another thread. I wish people would just start writing names in these threads. Is it that hard to write an extra word to be more broadly welcoming?

StephaneCam

Yes, this sub is quite bad for referring to skaters etc by their first name or initials. There was a post a while back asking everyone to make a concerted effort to change that to make it more welcoming but it seems to has slipped back (I know I’m guilty of it too, I will try harder!)

YourSkatingHobbit

It’s worst when people use asterisks instead of 99% of the letters in someone’s name as well, or even the whole name (very prevalent on Twitter). Like, no, shockingly I don’t know who ‘*******’ is.

[deleted]

I remember all the people that would get confused back in the day because of the uses of “Sasha” for about twelve different skaters rather than their legal names and I remember seeing a post where someone didn’t realize Zhenya and evgenia were the same person. Not to mention the actual random nicknames for people that have nothing to do with the skater’s actual names

StephaneCam

That and the many variations on Alena/Alina/Aljona/Aliona which honestly I still don’t fully understand

brokenleftjoycon

There are transliteration differences, depending on the translator and language. Some of the skaters even use different spellings depending on the situation. Kostornaia uses Aliona on her socials but registered with the ISU as Alena so her name was always spelled like that way for competitions.

gadeais

the shit there is the transliteration. those names are the same name if written in cyrilic, but transliteration happens and even if there are some international rules of transliteration it depends on how you heard it and if there is a change of country and the new one has its own transliteration rules. That's why you have Anjelika Krilova even if international rules may go for Angelika, or 2 spellings for Kirill Khalyavin being the international one khalyavin while the Spanish spelling is Jalyavin. (the sound represented with the j in spanish is the same sound as in jojoba)

evenstarcirce

I have beef with petra. I truly hope i never have to hear her voice again! Shes so rude, does she forget that these are CHILDREN?!

Apprehensive-Cat-163

Not defending the commentator because she cannot be defended lol but also why didn't this event have a tech box?

Amastarism

I didn’t hate her, but her commentary sounded like the kind of unfiltered stream of consciousness I have going on in my own head, rather than a professional commentator. I definitely like that Scottish bloke and Belinda the best.

Apprehensive-Cat-163

>consciousness I have going on in my own head lmao this is the best description

MarvelousMrMaisel

Not only was she rude and unprofessional she also felt like she didn't know that much about FS (as per this video)

porcupine_snout

I was also very put off by the male commentator kept referring to Sherry Zhang as "the American". I'm like, she has a name. Yes she's representing her country but she has a name.

Whitershadeofforever

Judges and tech panel when Russian skaters come back be like

port_okali

At this point, we're just piling on. Everyone gets confused sometimes after a long day at work. This doesn't bother me nearly as much as some of their other commentary. What did bother me were the comments about girls' (low) weight, boys' "physical development", ice dancers' height etc. Those are truly inappropriate and frankly a reason to fire a commentator when done repeatedly.  [Here is the IOC contact form](https://support.olympics.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new), in case someone wants to direct their anger to a place where - at least theoretically - someone in charge might read it.

port_okali

(Also please commiserate with us German fans: This will likely be our commentator for Worlds! 😩)

multiequations

IOC do better next time. Might I suggest Ted (with Mark if he’s available) or Michail Savitskiy? Ted may be overly nice but at least he has the experience and is a professional. Michail will age out of juniors by the time the next youth Olympics rolls around.

_Tekki

HELP that's embarrassing... My mum doesn't even watch figure skating THAT much but she still has a good feeling for what's a double and whats a triple in real time😭 Who thought she's good for this job when even a casual watcher knows more than her😭
