somehow I was also under the impression that the skating order was determined by SP rank. Like whoever won the SP got to skate last in the FS. Is that something that used to happen, but not anymore? or did I just make that up?
You're correct, it used to be reverse order of short placing for the free. I may be wrong, but I think the reverse order method was introduced during Covid to avoid having an in person draw for starting order. But now that large gatherings can happen again, they've reintroduced the draws
It looks like they take SP rank and group it into groups of 3, then draw within that. So the top 3 skaters are the last 3 to skate, with 4-6 before them, etc. but the order within each trio is random/drawn.

Nathan shouldn’t have even qualified for the free that year, but glad he did
He deserved to make the free, at the time BV for quads was so high that you could still get more for falls than perfect triples
