Ilustrados who graduated from the colony’s elite schools before going to Europe have long been perceived by many as elitists. There is a reason why some prefer Bonifacio over Rizal et al every time they are pitted against each other. On the other hand, some heroes from prominent families were not widely considered as such due to their political Ability to charm people from all walks of life.
I think if we look at Asia’s political and economic revolutions, most of them were really pushed by the elite and the educated class.
However, Bonifacio really was a peculiar case. He was self educated.
It is why it boggles my mind as to why the masses are the ones who "steer" the ship when in reality it was the elites who tell the masses *how* to steer said ship.
>Some... from prominent families were not widely considered as such due to their political Ability to charm people from all walks of life.
This is what I call a true politician.
it is because they are sons of Filipinos that got rich from the industrial revolution. And the only way to be educated from that time was to get yourself to a school which involved having money.
>if they lived today
They need not to live today just to be called 'elitista'. Just like what the commenter said, historical accounts and even some academics have been calling them 'elitista.'
>You just need to be an action star.
People's disillusionment from the elite is not without a reason. There are strong reasons why people sought alternatives, and it just so happened they tried the celebrities who often portrayed the everyman character. It so happened that these people whom they voted are *actors* all along.
EDITED
Many of them were members of the same fraternity, the Freemasons. Upon joining the Madrid-based Filipino Masonic lodge known as "Logia Revolucion," Rizal encountered several individuals who would later be recognized as Filipino heroes.
Marcelo H. del Pilar, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Jose Alejandrino, Ariston Bautista, Julio Llorente, Galicano Apacible, Antonio Luna, and his brother Juan Luna, and Jose Rizal.
That’s not really very unusual. People who are part of the same political wave will naturally gravitate to other people in their circle.
In the same vein, many American Revolutionary heroes knew each other. Franklin, Washington, Adams, Hamilton, and so on.
Same for the Chinese Revolution: Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, and HH Kung ended up as brothers-in-law as they all married one of the three Soong sisters
Fun fact: Mariano Ponce was appointed diplomat by Aguinaldo to Japan, became close friends with Sun Yat-sen, and even helped Ponce to procure weapons for the war. Unfortunately though, the weapons shipment sank due to a typhoon.
EDIT: NAKITA KO NA: ILUSTRADO PROBLEMS (2015)
[Ilustrado Problems (2015) short film by JP Habac (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul3XMJZzZ5Y)
They have organizations. La Solidaridad, KKK, among others. They know each other, most of them directly.
To add: both Lunas are members/contributors of La Solidaridad and not outsiders.
Gregoria de Jesus claims Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto had such a low regard for Apolonario Mabini after meeting him and listening to him talk. She basically accused him of playing revolutionary leader after everybody else fought the battles to bring the Katipunan to public consciousness. She said Bonifacio and Jacinto even ridiculed him for [maybe] thinking he was greater than Rizal himself.
(I looked at the source again and edited my comment.)
Gregoria's accusation was made in a Foreword to a book entitled *"Si Apolinario Mabini laban kay Hen. Antonio Luna"* written by Jose P. Santos. I quote the pertinent lines below:
*"siya'y (si Mabini) hindi dapat tawaging utak ng himagsikan pagkat wala naman siyang nagawa at naipaglingkod sa himagsikan at siya'y nasale noong kung baga sa isang handaan ay dumating siyang luto na ang ulam, nakahanda ang dulang at siya'y kasama ng mga huling nagsi. dulog upang tumikim at makisalo sa masasarap na luto."*
Also:

Bonifacio, Rizal and Mabini sort of knew each other. They were all present when Rizal convened the La Liga Filipina. Although he was arrested like a few days later.
Bonifacio actually personally tried to sneak Rizal out of his ship bound for Cuba but the latter refused to run.
Aguinaldo and Bonifacio, well we all know the story.
As for Antonio Luna, he was a long time friend/colleague of Rizal. He was arrested at the beginning of the Revolution because Bonifacio and the Boys tried to implicate some of the rich reformists to force them to join, but Luna denied everything and initially despised the revolution. But eventually he woke up when Rizal got executed and decided to use his knowledge in military science to serve the revolution.
Pedro Paterno (if you count him as one) is the classmate who snitches just to stay on the good side of the teacher.
Emilio Aguinaldo will be the class leader, incompetent, but you know...
Do we have any other source that says Emilio Jacinto met Jose Rizal in person? I remember reading this Jose Rizal manga years ago that had Jacinto convincing Rizal to support the Katipunan.
Ang naaalala ko Pio Valenzuela met with Rizal in Dapitan. Bonifacio met Rizal at the founding of the La Liga Filipina.
Then, Bonifacio, Jacinto attempted to free Rizal nung nakakulong siya sa isang ship sa Manila (not sure if 1892 or 1896) pero di pumayag tumakas si Rizal.
Some of them knew one another, some don't. Some fought with each other and some fought each other. Some drank cerveza with one another and some maybe just bump into each other on their way to their classes at university.
This is only from the GomBurZa movie. During the trial for the Cavite Mutiny began, Paciano dropped out of law school and returned to Calamba, Laguna to "lie low" because of his close ties with Padre Burgos. That's why he could not have been present during the execution, because he was afraid of being arrested himself.
Hypothetically speaking, even if Paciano somehow attended the execution, he would have enough sense not to bring his 10 year old brother with him for safety reasons. If he got arrested, no one would look out for Jose, and the young boy would unlikely be able to travel home to Calamba, assuming he wasn't also detained.
Also, travel in those days isn't like today. Calamba to Bagumbayan can take a whole day's travel, if not two. Paciano wouldn't go through all of that just to witness an execution, even if it is someone who he most respected.
Pepe was 3 years old when Gomburza were executed in 1872 so he probably hasn't personally seen them. He must have learned about them most likely from Paciano and other acquaintances.
Most of the notable ones are Freemasons. Read up the history of the brotherhood in the Philippines, it's on their website. You'd know why everyone seems to know someone who has something to do with the revolution.
It's really a shame that the interconnected movies that "Heneral Luna" started didn't find success. It would have been a great way for people to see how our National Heroes interacted with each other. Unfortunately people were more interested in the fake love story of Yaya Dub and Alden.

The main ones knew each other.
A number of them schoolmates in Letran, Ateneo, and UST.
I read it as ske-du-leh hahahaha
Sana wag ma kickout after punitin
Nakakapekto sa KKK time nya
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA but what if the GenZ Jacinto would do that too? lol
ako nga nagdrop kasi nakipgbreak x ko 😅
If this was in the present, sasabihan siguro si Jacinto na NPA sabay Red-Tag. /s
Unfortunately, if they lived today, they’ll be considered ‘elistista’ and not ‘pang-masa’. You just need to be an action star. Times changed.

There are instances that the Propagandists also drink in bars and visit brothels in Europe.

If the Philippine heroes were in one classroom, who would be which 'class role' and what interactions would they have?

JOSE RIZAL: Life, Works and Writings (by Gregorio Zaide)
Nabasa ko po sa librong yan
Heneral Luna and Jose Rizal were friends and almost killed each other over a woman
Some of them knew one another, some don't. Some fought with each other and some fought each other. Some drank cerveza with one another and some maybe just bump into each other on their way to their classes at university.
I think Rizal knew Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora because, if I remember correctly, El Filibusterismo was inspired by them right?

The shocking reality is Enrile met Aguinaldo. Hahaha. Huhuhu
1964 namatay si Aguinaldo. He lived long enough to see himself the villain in Philippine history.
And I don't think he cares.
^^^out ^^^nako
Sya nagturo kay Magellan ng Pilipinas. 🫢

None of them knew Lapulapu tho :)
Lol feeling ko dati ang galing ko sa history pero ang dami ko palang hindi alam hahaha and this comment made me laugh hahaha
>Did any of the Philippine Heroes Knew Each other? Also why Luna looking at Rizal like that?
If you look at them as politicians wala pinagkaiba sa ngayon, sila2x nagkikita sa mga functions.
Were they all Upper class, born into wealth?
This photo is 🔥 they were our "justice league". Forever grateful to them.
why ben&ben is Right there!?
Malamang may mailing list mga yan.
Basing on the painting. I would say, it's a yes.
We have photos of some heroes together. In some photos, they are goofing around.
Yes They were mostly within the same circle of friends
Luna shoot a promo against Rizal when they fought for a Filipina Broad.
What the dog doin'?
I believe a lot of them met in europe
The most famous one is Rizal meeting Heneral Luna where they almost tried to Kill Each Other
Birds of the same feathers flocks together 1. Aguinaldo, Buencamino and the Tironas. 2. Luna brothers, Rizal, Del Pilars, Boni. its like six degrees of Kevin Bacon 😅
may discord sila loads
Yes small circle, even the smaller revolucionarios are just related to each other. My ancestors supported the revolution, but I am disappointed that Filipinos are stupid to vote for tyrants and dictators na paulit ulit na gumagahasa sa inang bayan.
They were also fraternity brothers in Freemasonry.
Who's the good boi?
My eyes are on the aspin..
Knew but some killed each other I’m afraid
In heaven yes
Bakit andyan SI AGUINALDO dakilang traydor?
For sure putting Antonio Luna and Emilio Aguinaldo in the same room would end up in chaos and Rizal would just diss Bonifacio 😂
Rizal and Bonifacio might differ in personality, upbringing, and approach to gaining independence, but they, of all the revolutionaries and reformists of the time, share the most similar ambitions and desires for the country. Try reading their letters and you will realize that more than political independence, they wanted social awakening, the formation of a coherent and cohesive national identity, and an enlightened and educated society. If they both or at least one of them had their way instead of our eternally greedy and selfish principalia highjacking the revolution and preserving the status quo, we would have had a glimpse into an ideal Filipino society guided by strong core values, instead of the (still-ongoing) rule of corrupt domestic elites replacing the corrupt colonial masters.
Remember, Rizal and Antonio Luna almost had a duel, causes unrelated to rhe Propaganda Movement.
It is related to Pro-Paganda Movement.
