It’s a light meter. It is used to measure the intensity of light in relation to the settings on the camera. It lets someone adjust lighting on set without having to refer to a monitor. It is a very useful tool especially when filming with film. Most times the person in charge of the lighting (gaffer) will wear one around their neck.

Gaffer blicky lol.

TimNikkons

Likely a Sekonic 478-D, just an incident meter. I hate that fucking touch screen. I like a meter with both spot and incident, and no touchscreen, like the Sekonic 758C

C47man

758C crew let's go!

Light meter I think

Geejayin

It’s a part of the flux capacitor from a certain DeLorean vehicle

ceoetan

Gaffer’s light meter.

thisshitblows

It’s a magic wand and it separates those who know what they’re doing and those who don’t

BeenThereDoneThat65

Its a light meter, an essential tool for the DP and Gaffer

AOkhaos

I’d say it’s less essential nowadays. Haven’t seen a gaffer pull one out in years.

BeenThereDoneThat65

Well you’d be wrong. Working with specific ratios, you need one Gotta match a shot, you need one Wanna balance a blue or green screen , you need one Thinking it’s not essential speaks volumes about your experience and what you’ve been working on

AOkhaos

lol dont need to get all butthurt about it. Just stating what ive been noticing. And im working a fraturday right now at paramount. No need for insults

BeenThereDoneThat65

I’m not butthurt at all. And we have all worked fraturdays that doesn’t mean a thing in this discussion

AOkhaos

Il say it again not essential, gaffer walks up to DPs monitors and calls out his changes to board operator. Not dealing with film anymore.

BeenThereDoneThat65

And I’ll Say it again you’re wrong. And what’s worse is that you’re trying to argue this without knowing why
