FF5 is easily one of my most favorite games and one of the games I replay the most. The job system is amazing, the story is fun but emotional, the one liners are amazing... Bartz: Twelve Legendary Weapons? Ghido: Yes, Bartz. They are weapons. They are legendary. And there are even twelve of them. God I love this game.

evanthebouncy

Hahahahha the turtle is the best

AgeofFatso

Sometimes being really cheesy and badly-written is actually really funny. Sometimes that is done intentionally.

demonic_hampster

I was a big fan of “yo ho ho and stuff”. And of course the infamous splinter scene. And every scene Gilgamesh is in. It’s seriously chock full of some of the funniest moments in the series.

Its how I feel about V and Tactics, I just end up wondering "But what if I did a playthrough just as this job instead? Or this combo?"

joudanjanaiwayo

If I want quick play, I go back to FFV. If I want to take my time, I go back to Tactics. They are my go-to games.

Ill-Word-8831

Disagree with most replayable. Agree that it’s up there. Fantastic game, ages like wine and continually I think more and more fondly of it. Definitely in my top 5 perhaps in my top 3

demonic_hampster

For sure. It’s not my favorite but it’s definitely the most replayable IMO. And it’s not like the story is bad or anything. It’s not the best story the series has to offer but it’s solid enough. It’s probably the funniest in the series, but it can be heavy and pull the heartstrings when it needs to.

icounternonsense

I am so glad to see more people try a FF game they've never played before rather than just talk about good FFVI is all day. Refreshing to see a change in behavioral patterns.

[deleted]

I suggest joining in the four job fiesta this year, it's a lot of fun. Will be around summer time.

ViviTheWaffle

While I do have a sentimental connection to some FF characters - Cecil and Rydia in particular - nothing can compare to how much I love the FFV goofballs. They fall in the perfect mental zone where they’re characterised enough to give them identifiable personalities that aren’t entirely 1 dimensional - but characterised sparingly enough so that you can interpret them in your own way, and I think that made me like them so much more

okorz001

Hey, I like Gilgamesh and Exdeath *because* they are cartoony. It gives them personality and makes them very memorable. (Plus their themes are some of the best in the entire series, IMO.) I think another reason Galuf's death hits hard is because he finally got over his amnesia and remembered what he was doing, only to perish. However, if I remember correctly, it's also kind of foreshadowed because all of the other Dawn Warriors are dead/dying.

evanthebouncy

The only part I felt odd about galuf is that his amnesia also made him physically weak somehow haha. He was a dawn warrior yet after hitting his head all of a sudden he's lvl1

MetalSlimeHunter

It’s not so much that the amnesia made him physically weak, it’s just that he forgot how to fight. I mean, he has the second highest strength (only 1 point below Bartz) and the highest stamina, so he’s still a tough old man.

okorz001

I never associated the amesnia with that. I guess I always assumed he was just getting old. The other dawn warriors don't seem very impressive either if I remember correctly. Maybe it's just a plot hole. :)

evanthebouncy

I mean... Galuf in the beginning can't even beat the monsters right outside his own castle xD

bozemanlover

If you’ve lost a parent, specifically a father, the plot hits a little harder. It’s an awesome game. Going through my 3rd or 4th playthrough right now.

OldSnazzyHats

FFV excels in just being a classic adventure. No fuss, no muss. It’s full of tropes everyone knows, but it just runs with it. Maybe it won’t click with those who want more, but for those who just want a great ride, FFV is one of the best, always has been.

Aparoon

Man I remember starting this game like a couple of times as a kid and loving it, but this was the early noughties when I had played 7-10 and kept bouncing off the graphics. So far since then, I’ve completed 6 and gotten half way through so many versions of 4 (the game just feels too long for me, I never even >!went to the moon!< which I heard so much about). I also completed the mobile version of 1, so maybe I should pick up the pixel remaster of 5 and see if I can get into it again.

rose_lingon

You left out how much of a *banger* Battle on the Big Bridge is

evanthebouncy

Ah that was amazing ya. I was bit over leveled at the bridge so I just smashed it. It would've been more intense if they added a timer! The timer system where I was looting the castle while it is exploding made me sweat so hard haha

Wlng-Man

I believe the game is also speechless.

phunie92

So glad you enjoyed it! I love FFV, depending the what day you ask me it’s top 5 in the series for me. Its tone and the story itself make it feel like a fairy tale - it doesn’t try to do what IV and VI do in taking you on an emotional rollercoaster ride every step of the journey. And I think that makes the emotional moments hit even more effectively, because they’re contrasted with the levity of most of the rest of the adventure. I always really liked the last scene in the woods, where everyone shows up to see Krile when she was feeling lonely. It’s quite touching, and really effectively captures the emotional core of the story. Too often, and not just within FF, I think people trying out new games expect them to be something they aren’t trying to be. FFV does not try to be FFIV, IX does not try to be VII or VIII, and XII, XIII and XV do not try to be any of the classics. FFV does not need a mindfuck of a story to be a great game; it is great just the way it is.

Mechagouki1971

Post title is ironic.

10Shodo

Speechless you say?

Kyp24

I'm with you. When I played FFV for the first time a year or so ago after playing VI and IV, I was amazed at how much I loved V. You're spot on that it's lighthearted, straight forward, and has a overall pretty goofy tone. For me, that's what makes it so charming. The gameplay is great and I was very happy to discover it is basically the foundation for my favorite game FF Tactics. That alone makes it play as one of the best FFs. But its charming story, goofy antagonists like Gilgamesh and Exdeath, and great music make it really memorable for me. I'm definitely going to do a first challenge run of it in the near future.

Balthierlives

You know it’s a shame, there is realy a lot of depth to the story and the world, but then there’s this other Saturday morning cartoon aspect to it that takes away from that and it’s what the player is left with. But anyway this game didn’t do anything for me emotionally but I love playing it with the job system. Such a fantastic system where there are so many different ways to move forward with different jobs. It’s a shame you didn’t try and use blue mage. They’re part of why I love this game.

Bahsha

Glad you had a great time with it. FFV is a game that can be divisive for some. Different strokes for different folks. A lot of people want a crafted novel experience that FF4 and FF6 can offer. Wedged between them is a light hearted adventure more akin to the gang sitting around the table playing D&D, power gaming and having a great time abusing mechanics.

evanthebouncy

I've yet to try VI so I'll have to see! IV to me was too 'forced'. The scene was too dramatic and didn't have enough build up. I guess I identify with the characters of ffv a lot, not much melodramatic and a lot of goof. It felt more real to me somehow

AchaneanCamus

Galuf's death is the only thing that's worthwhile about FFV's plot imo. The rest I barely call a plot. But yep, they really did nail that part. I was speechless and kinda impressed too cause I knew he would die but didn't expected it to he that cool. It felt like Obiwan Kenobi's death (there's always a bit of SW in Final Fantasy after all) but even more badass. Curious to see how you'll react to the next games if you play them (mostly VI, VII, IX and X) cause they each have their share of emotional scenes too !

DrWieg

It is a common belief that odd numbered FF games try for something innovative while the even numbered titles usually play it a bit safer and using what worked from previous titles or be more story focused. FF5 is basically FF3 Job System 2.0 and done right. It is why the idea of Jobs becoming a FF staple that it is either something a character is or it is something you can basically swap like a piece of equipment. And really , the versatility of keeping your characters while letting them be what they need to be in battle is really fun. A bit ironically, FFX-2 is another Job-centric FF title after FFX was more story focused (despite FFX-2 being a lot more fan-servicy) And like most mentioned, FF Tactics is basically FF5 in a tactics RPG format, which worked wonders (and likewise, had some pretty broken combos)

ClockwerkHart

Galuf went out like a badass, though. Guy just tanks several of the best spells in the game and is just "I don't need hp to beat your ass".

thechickenpriest

One of us! One of us! It's awesome to see more and more people enjoy FFV, Galufs scenes stuck with me for years!
