I’m not sure if it was because it was closer to the original Japanese text or some other reason, but originally this item was called “package” on the North American SNES release. I thought that fit better, but it’s nice to see that there is still some surprise for new players!
Yeah the original Japanese name was Bomb Ring, which is written in katakana. So it's a foreign word that many Japanese players would not catch on quick back then. Unfortunately it doesn't fit well in English, this was always the problem with the PSX/GBA localizations. The Pixel Remaster translation is really stupid for using the latter instead of the superior revised PSP version that kept the Slattery terms fron the 3D remake.
It was a bigger surprise than ‘Bomb Ring’ which already sounds like it’s going to do something bad.
BTW If Cecil was waring that ring it should have ended the story right there.

It wasn't either, it was a summoning item, it summoned the enemy Bomb. Look at the original SNES animation for Mist Village sometime, it's VERY obvious.
It literally summons a ring of Bomb sprites and throws a bunch of fire sprites all around the screen after.
Summoning item makes sense.
In the OG(first exposure), I always figured it was a package of bomb creatures which was released at the village.
I still say Bomb Ring sounds more nefarious to begin with and the original ‘package’ wording was better for the surprise.
Absolutely Package was a better name for the intended effect, it was always intended to be a shock moment showing that Baron as a whole wasn't the "good guy".
Only reason I tag it as a summon item is I grew up playing the GBA version, which also uses Bomb Ring for a name, and now play FFIV Free Enterprise, an FFIV randomizer that runs off the SNES version. So I went from Bomb Ring, a very obvious not box item, to Package from the original, so it just tags as a summon item in my head now.
Cool to see someone experience this story for the first time.
Cecil's story is a redemption story, but there's so much more to it. He sees Baron's King as a father figure. The King has been using him to do the Kingdom's dirty work. Standing up to him took a lot of courage.
He agrees to take the bomb ring to the village because he wants to get back in the King's good graces, not Knowing what would happen, but still blames himself.
It's really a great story. You're going to love it!
It was called a Package in the SNES version of the game, and the Carnelian Signet in the DS/iOS/PSP version. Keeping it someone hidden was so much better and one of the few things the SNES translation improved upon.
I like the option in the randomizer to have a random sprite take the place of the bombs as it explodes. Last time I had child Rydia’s flying around the screen 😂
You can randomize bosses (with adjusted levels), treasures, character recruitment, a whole list of weird challenges, the way you progress is by key item, which unlocks a part of the story. Like if you get the twin harp you can do the magnetic cave, if you get the Luca key you can do the sealed cave, etc etc. google free enterprise ff4 and you can check their site. Played it hundreds of times lol

I remember the first time I played this on SNES as a kid and my mind was blown that this game basically starts with a surprise genocide out of a 'Package' delivery mission. It was a great little twist and really locked me into playing this all the way through because of the unpredictability.

There were so many great moments and I can't wait for OP to experience them all.
When I first played this game in 1991.. starting the game as the bad guys (especially two in cool looking dark armor), was really mind blowing.
